Ever wish that every other person on the planet would vanish in a puff of smoke? Feeling that way more than usual lately? So have I! And so has Scott Sharkey, who wanders in from the wastelands to talk about The Quiet Earth, the hugely influential New Zealand classic about what it would be like to be the literal last man on Earth (and then suddenly not be).

Every off-week, listeners who have chosen to support Weird Studies by joining our Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/weirdstudies) at the Listener's Tier get to enjoy a bonus episode. These episodes are different from the flagship show. Less formal and entirely improvised, they offer Phil and JF a different way of exploring the weird in art, philosophy and culture. To tide our listenership over until the next new episode drops on September 25th, 2024, here is a recent example of a Weird Studies audio extra, recorded as your hosts were finishing up their first Weirdosphere course, "The Beauty and the Horror." The conversation ended up centering on cultural works we experienced in childhood, and that are all the more magical for being only vaguely remembered. Welcome back to another episode of The Video Store Podcast, where we dive deep into the shelves to bring you some of the most intriguing, thought-provoking, and often overlooked gems in cinema history. Today, we're venturing into the realms of science fiction and the boundaries of human perception with four films that, each in their own right, challenge our understanding of reality, humanity, and the universe at large.First up, we have "The Quiet Earth" from 1985. This New Zealand sci-fi classic explores the profound and eerie calm after a scientific experiment gone awry seems to leave a lone scientist as the last man on Earth. The film is celebrated not just for its intriguing premise, but also for its breathtaking final scene, which has had film fans arguing for decades. The solitude and desolation captured in the film are palpable, making it a must-watch for those who appreciate the more introspective side of science fiction.Next up is "Enemy Mine," also from 1985. This film stands out for its exploration of themes of racism, camaraderie, and survival under the most unlikely circumstances. Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr.'s performances are the heart of this story. They portray two soldiers from opposing sides of an interstellar war, stranded on a desolate planet. Their journey from enemies to friends is a powerful commentary on understanding and tolerance that resonates just as strongly today.Moving on to a slightly earlier film, I am recommending the mind-bending world of "Altered States" from 1980. Directed by Ken Russell and based on the novel by Paddy Chayefsky, this movie takes us on a psychedelic journey through the human psyche. In it, William Hurt's character experiments on himself with a mixture of sensory deprivation and hallucinogenic drugs. The visual effects used to depict his experiences were groundbreaking at the time and remain impressively evocative, painting an often disturbing picture of the potential and peril of pushing the boundaries of human consciousness.Lastly, we have the environmental cautionary tale "Silent Running" from 1972. Directed by Douglas Trumbull, who was known for his special effects work on "2001: A Space Odyssey." This film tells the story of a botanist on a space station dedicated to preserving Earth's last natural environments. It's a poignant, ahead-of-its-time commentary on environmentalism and loneliness The highlights are Bruce Dern's compelling performance and the unforgettable presence of the small, yet endearing, service robots, Huey, Dewey, and Louie (love em). Each of these films explore themes that are as relevant today as they were when they were first released. From the solitude of "The Quiet Earth" and the unlikely alliance in "Enemy Mine" to the exploratory depths of "Altered States" and the environmental message of "Silent Running." Like all good SF films, they invite us to question, reflect, and marvel at the possibilities beyond our current understanding. So, whether you're a long-time fan of the genre or just looking for something different to watch this weekend, these films should provide plenty of food for thought. Thanks for joining me on this journey through the stars and the depths of the human mind. Until next time, keep those VCRs powered up.Subscribe to the Video Store Podcast* The Video Store Podcast* Apple Podcast* RSS This is a public episode. Kerry and Collin are joined by author John A. Zukowski, author of the book "Christmas On the Screen: Reviewing the Evolution of American Spirituality," which provides a springboard into the discussion of the classic "The Bishop's Wife," starring Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven. Why did America need so many movies about celestial beings and angels after WWII? What would the film have been like if Grant and Niven switched roles? What exactly is a "stinger"? (we know it's a drink) All these questions, plus Kerry gives us three more titles (with a classic or two) from the "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" book. Buy John A. Zukowski's book "Christmas On the Screen: Reviewing the Evolution of American Spirituality" here. Book movies covered: "The Quiet Earth" (1985) "The Sawshank Redemption" (1994) "Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse" (1991)

In this episode, we begin a new block focused on Science-Fiction cinema with a particular exclusion for Sci-Fi Horror just to mix things up. Sci-fi can be pretty broad, so we definitely can't hit it all in one go. It all kicks off with Jason's pick giving us a time honored tradition of musing about what the end of humanity might be like. Join us as we check out Geoff Murphy's The Quiet Earth from 1985. Jason sorts out his feelings between fond memories of the film and its impact on a rewatch. Dustin delves into comparisons with the source novel while questioning the direction for the back half of the movie. But before all that we provide our usual whirlwind overview of the genre to help guide our discussions. And so much more! We thought we would switch it up this week and talk about 3 recent movies we have watched. First up, a spaghetti western from 1967 starring Lee Van Cleef called A Day of Anger, next up, a Film Noir from 1955 starring Robert Mitchum called The Night of the Hunter and last but not least a 1985 Sci-Fi movie out of New Zealand called The Quiet Earth. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/reviewsfromthecrawlspace/message
The Quiet Earth The Quiet Earth is a 1985 New Zealand post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Geoff Murphy and starring Bruno Lawrence, Alison Routledge and Peter Smith as three survivors of a cataclysmic disaster. It is loosely based on the 1981 science fiction novel of the same name by Craig Harrison. We explore the importance of an opening image and closing image, the world without people and some ways in which New Zealand and Australian films portray tense encounters. In science we ask the question: How long would it take for the Earth to go feral without humans? Welcome back Dial Effers! This episode is huge and you won't want to miss this one! Incredible Two-Headed Podcast host Aaron Lowe returns to our A-Z series, and this week we are on the letter Q, and the film is, The Quiet Earth (1985): a lo-fi science fiction film from New Zealand based on a novel by Craig Harrison. But before we get to that on the episode, I reveal my Top 10 Films of 2022; I don't say much on the films, as I have talked about most of them on the show with guests on this month's bonus best of series. I talk about All Quiet on the Western Front, The Batman, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, and more. Around the 40 minute mark, we begin talking about the film for this episode. This was my first time watching Geoff Murphy's science fiction classic, The Quiet Earth, which is considered New Zealand's first major science fiction film production. If you enjoyed the films derived from Richard Matheson's I am Legend, then you will definitely enjoy this one, as it deals with "the last man on earth" device, but diverges from those films, by focusing on the human aspects of survival, loneliness, and despair. The story follows three survivors after a cataclysmic event set off by "Project Flashlight." The first 36-minutes, are a solo performance by Bruno Lawrence, who plays Zac Hobson, one of the individuals involved in "project flashlight." At his lowest point, two survivors show up, first, Joanne (Alison Routledge), followed by the leather-clad Api (Pete Smith), the third piece to this love triangle. The first act of the film has some of the most striking visuals and an incredible performance by Lawrence as he slowly loses his mind and falls deeper into loneliness. The Quiet Earth is a visually striking science fiction film going for big ideas but remaining sparse in its execution. We watch Bruno Lawrence traverse desolate city streets with the emptiness of the world around him accentuating his loneliness. Furthermore, the film's soundtrack was redubbed to remove sounds of the real world adding to the loneliness of our three characters and isolating the audience into a world where there is as much mystery as there is wonder. This one is worth your time, and is currently available on multiple platforms. I watched this on one of my favorite free-with-ads app, Tubi. Take a listen to our conversation, this one is going down as one of my favorites on the show, and we cover a lot of the film, which maybe will entice you to watch! Thank you for reading (and thank you for listening). Follow us on Instagram (@Dialfpodcast) - this is where I'm most active; shoot me a message or comment and let's talk about film. Dial F for Film is a podcast about the love of movies and host's -- J. Carlos Menjivar -- attempt to watch 1001 movies before he dies. A lover of lists and film, Carlos is a firm believer that all film lists should be tackled with one goal in mind: completion. Steven Jay Schneider's "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" is the subject of this podcast. Each episode features one guest and five movies from the massive list, compiled into themed lists by the host. Guests each week will select one category without any prior knowledge as to what films are included. Once a category is chosen, Carlos reveals the five films and the viewing begins. The guests then come on Dial F for Film via Zoom and the discussion begins.

What better way to end the year than a double feature of end-of-the-world classics? First up we have Stanley Kubrick's apocalyptic comedy masterpiece Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, starring the incredible Peter Sellers as three of his greatest characters, and George C. Scott in what is arguably a career best performance as the infinitely quotable General Buck Turgidson - followed by the scrappy, little-seen New Zealand breakout, The Quiet Earth, which turns the standard wake-up-and-everyone's gone plot in bizarre quantum directions!
This week we watched the 1985 sci-fi drama "The Quiet Earth." This one was picked by our patron Scott Stewart. Thanks, Scott! When everyone around him vanishes overnight, scientist Zac Hobson (Bruno Lawrence) finds himself seemingly the only person on the planet. The isolation initially drives him to the brink of suicide, but eventually Zac adapts to a day-to-day routine. After meeting two other survivors, Joanne (Alison Routledge) and Api (Peter Smith), a Maori, the trio roams New Zealand trying to understand what caused everyone else to disappear, why they remained behind -- and whether disaster will strike again.

Serge Bodnarchuk of Cold Crash Pictures joins us to explore... New Zealand! Yes, Dan's homeland – but it's a bizarre alternate universe version of NZ, and not just because it's 1985. Zac Hobson wakes up naked in a motel bed to discover he may be the last man on Earth. He gets to engage in a few fantasies: driving a train, moving into a mansion, running rampant through a church wearing a nightie and brandishing a shotgun... until he meets Joanne and Api. The three quickly discover the commonality between them that could unlock the mystery of the quiet Earth, but is Zac secretly responsible for what happened? And is it going to happen again and erase them all? We wander this largely forgotten land to decide if this little-seen sci-fi gem from down under should be out and proud in its nightie! This week we had two fantastic guests, Vanessa and Elijah from the Kicking and Screaming podcast to talk about The Quiet Earth (1985). We had so much fun talking about this movie, along with some ribbit holes into martial arts and touching things at museums. This is the last trip into the past, when our hosts reviewed the 1985 New Zealand gem, "The Quiet Earth", enjoyed heaping plates of Ledo's pizza, and shared comradery in Rickandjim's childhood home, prior to the global event that rattled our planet. Moving forward, all episodes will take place in the future, a.k.a., the recent past. Enjoy with some Ledo's of your own, if you are able.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 456 As the daylight starts to slip away… we gather together for a grand discussion on all things horror… and sort-of horror… and Halloween and of course - pumpkin-spiced. And as we kick off the season by seeing how many Smarties we can eat, we also bring up… the slow retail shuffle, A Quiet Place, Heredity, folk horror, The Mummy, Runaway, monster in the woods, mariachi band of the undead, Brazil, the last great epic Francis Ford Coppola movie, a cornucopia of underwear, a 70s light show in his dungeon, There’s a Ghost in my Bathroom, the dime store version of Johnny Depp, Mindhorn, yellow #5 vs yellow #2, The VVitch, Mother!, Digital Underground, The Rockford Files, you know… I’ve gotta say… it’s just action-packed gore and… stupid, Bad Ronald, Nothing but Trouble, and by good she means it’s so awful it’s funny, the horror of William Shatner’s mustache, squirrel funerals, Gary Oldman, patience is a virtue… when you’re a murderer, Clue, Beyond the Black Rainbow, unleashed from the sarcophagus, Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious Universe, Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, Dynasty, 80s martial artist sci-fi crossovers, waist-to-pant ratio, Columbo, our march toward Halloween, Keanu Reeves, The Holy Mountain, people complaining about being old… in space, the Universal monster movies, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, reading the tea leaves of technology, Housebound, a crafty cryptid, the original Friday the 13th vs. Saw, Splitting Up Together, Tom Cruise vs. Brendan Fraser, The Blair Witch Project on crack, the dialogue wasn't stupid - it was just moronic, commerce zombies, The Bashful Bladder, The Love Boat, The Innkeepers, watching Blue Velvet as a child, Jack Ryan, The Quiet Earth, limited edition everything, you just need to stock up on red shirts, polyester pumpkin, Santa Sangre, a failed Fruit of the Loom character, Hardcore Henry, I just wanna watch things blow up, everything revolves around Bourbon and vanilla unicorn chalk. “...it definitely has a mood. Episode 29Please join Johnny, Frances, and Dennis in this episode of Graphic Novel Explorers Club as they discuss Paper Girls, Vol. 1 by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Cliff Chiang. Paper Girls, Vol. 1 is the story of four girls in 1988 who discover that not everything is as it seems in their sleepy little town while out delivering newspapers the day after Halloween. In this episode the gang discusses the 80s settings of the book; the four girls (Erin, MacKenzie, KJ and Tiffany) who make up the quartet; how Mack (MacKenzie) use insults from the 80s that would be considered homophobic or insensitive by today's standards; how Mack broke the “paper ceiling”; the use of Realistic by the paper girls; the possible influences of 80s pop culture like Jam and the Holograms, Mac and Me, and David Chronenberg The Fly; why you do not play with guns during The Rapture; the deciphered meaning of the “glyphs”; why future staff technology emits pink rays; where the future volumes of the story might be going; and our opinions about the storying telling and the art of Paper Girls, Vol. 1.Note: Johnny mentioned a movie that he could not remember the name of when the gang recorded this episode. The movie title is The Quiet Earth. He said it was an Australian film, when it is actually a New Zealand film (please forgive him, he was 10 years old when he saw the film). It is the story of a man and two other people who wake up to find the rest of the world has disappeared and their attempts to figure out what happened.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/graphicnovelexplorersclub/message See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

8 V's, 10 V's, 12 V's . The best way to explain Big Data is to use the four V's: Volume, Velocity, Variety and Veracity. In this podcast episode I talk about why nobody needs 10 or more V's of big data. And how Big Data is almost a must have, to do data science and especially machine learning. The music in this episode is the song The Quiet Earth by Thomas Barrandon. Check out his awesome music on Bandcamp. He is also on Spotify ;) Have fun!
For those of you who have time off for this Easter holiday and feeling bored, why not join us for a few hours, on our musical journey with the latest edition of Sequences. Out of the 18 musicians here, 11 make their first appearance. On the more ambient side we have Jeff Greinke rich textured soundscapes, Off Land’s dreamworld, the mysterious sound of Sampan Viking and Loomer’s sequential ambient music with him occasionally using the accordion, The melodic sounds taken care of by Nils Frahm intricate compositions, the lush cinematic worldly music of Sampan Symbion, influences of psychedelic from Harald Gramberg. and ex Kinetix member Colin Jordan with his new band Axxent Opaque. This episode is about the post apocalyptic drama 'The Quiet Earth.' It's directed by Geoff Murphy and stars Bruno Lawrence, Alison Routledge and Pete Smith.patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mildfuzztv twitter: https://twitter.com/Mild_Fuzz
We're joined by author John Jantunen in this episode. John starts off by telling us about his early influences, including David Gerrold's War Against the Chtorr series, Stephen King, old Hammer horror vampire films starring Peter Cushing, and post-apocalyptic movies like The Road Warrior, Escape from New York, A Boy and His Dog, The Quiet Earth, and Night of the Comet. We also talk extensively about John's love for the works of Philip K Dick, especially Counter-Clock World; Valis; A Scanner Darkly; Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said; and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? He also discusses watching Bladerunner when it first hit the theatres, what it's like rewatching it now versus his experience as a kid, and how it compares with 'Androids. While John talks about how Dick's weird ideas and the fundamental desperation of his writing were the biggest influence on his own development as a writer, he also discusses the slippery slope of reading too much PKD. And we go into detail about John's love of the post-apocalypse as subject matter, and specifically the question he continuously asked himself as a kid in the shadow of the Cold War in the 70s and 80s: what would a Canadian apocalypse look like? These thoughts fed into his eventual development of his short story "The Body Politic", and most especially his novel A Desolate Splendor, which we examine. Our interview took place in December 2016 via a Skype connection between John's home in Guelph, Ontario, and my location in the Lair of bloginhood, located in a cave beneath a hill fort in Kent. He's produced and written six music albums, and an operetta called Heartland (Tim Wheater, Almo Records). He's written two films, one of which, Snowball, was sold to Konstantine Films (Germany), Europe's largest film company, whose most famous film was Da Boat and The Damned. Stuart has roughly sixty audio recordings, published by hay house, Nightingale and Quiet Earth, Australia. Stuart Wilde has done 500 radio shows and a number of TV shows including the Michael Parkinson Show, BBC London. He's appeared on the Channel 10 Good Morning Australia show with Kerri-Anne Kennerly several times, as well as a number of affiliated TV stations in the United States. For a full list of Stuart Wilde's published works, you can search Wikipedia. =============== More About Stuart Wilde (from wikipedia) Career He studied alternative religions and Taoist philosophy for five years from the age of twenty-eight, and when he was thirty-three, he emigrated to the United States of America where he lived in Laguna Beach, California with his first wife Cynthia. He wrote his first book, Miracles, in 1983.[3] Shortly thereafter he began a career as a lecturer appearing mainly in New Thought Churches and at New Age conferences. In the 1990s he toured regularly with Deepak Chopra, Dr. Wayne Dyer and Louise Hay,[7] appearing at venues such as the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Wilde's London street slang and comedic way[8] of presenting self-empowerment and spiritual ideas continue to attract a wide and diverse audience.[2][8] He's been called ahead of his time," 'the teacher's teacher' because of the influence he has had on other writers and lecturers in the field", provocative, poignant, controversial, funny, and his writing "timeless".[2][9] He remains a recognized figure for progressive thought in metaphysics and the field of human potential, and is often quoted with references to his work appearing across a wide swath of international cultural, business, and educational forums from the Kennedy Center for the Arts',[10] interviews with American hip-hop artists and slam poets,[11] international investment conferences,[12] and the pages of international media such as CNET's "Top 10 List: Human Development Gurus"[13] and The Times of India's "Sunday Life" section.[14] Principal Philosophy & Early Work Wilde's principal philosophy states that, while many citizens may seem to be normal, acquiescing to the status quo, there exists, in fact, a vast population of what he calls Fringe Dwellers whose mind and soul do not align to the constraints of life in regular society that Wilde called Tick-Tock.[2][16] Wilde believed through use of the theta state of meditation (4–7 cycles per second), humans can better control their emotional life and their bio-rhythms, and begin to see visions, and that those visions and extrasensory feeling will lead to a greater balance and more freedom.[2][17][18] To that end, he emphasized the importance of going beyond the habit of struggling, and advocated the need for financial freedom,[2] themes stated in his books Life was Never Meant to be a Struggle (1987), The Trick to Money is Having Some (1989),[19] and The Little Money Bible (1998). In Affirmations (1986), Wilde laid out systems of self-talk that empower an individual to change their core beliefs.[20] His book Sixth Sense (2000) discusses practical techniques for developing extrasensory perception. Later Work He earned both praise and criticism for his later works which advance controversial concepts such as other dimensions, dematerialization, and Morph worlds.[9] His most avant garde philosophy is based on the idea that Paul Dirac's hypothesis of parallel antiparticle worlds is, in fact, correct, and that humans adept at trance meditation can become aware of spiritual dimensions placed at 90° from them left and right—dimensions, Wilde said, that follow Hawking's theory of transverse waves of light. Wilde acknowledged there was no empirical data to support his claim, but anecdotal evidence, gathered from more than two-thousand people whom he taught, stated they had experienced such transcendental 90° perception which led him to conclude these worlds exist.[21] Grace, Gaia, and the End of Days (2009) maps out coordinates for these spiritual dimensions and offers "a twenty-first century understanding of grace and spiritual evolution"—and tools to activate it in one's life. In a 2009 interview Wilde said, "Grace is a golden light, pure love, a divine energy, seen coming from these inner spiritual worlds. It is data-driven and laced with trillions of bits of fractal information that will guide you and help you evolve. The human system is configured to read this fractal data through visions and extra sensory intuitive feelings."[21] Serenity and balance developed through regular trance meditation enable access this 'pure information', which he called stream of consciousness from a 'Higher Knowing', 'The Source', 'God'.[21] While Wilde believed humans are multi-dimensional beings who possess both the celestial light and the dark, he posited they gravitate to one or the other based on inner feelings, thoughts, and actions. The quality of these feelings, moreover, determine the spiritual dimension an aspect of oneself will reside in any moment.[21][22] Redemption (and a life of love and serenity) is possible for all by choosing the ways of the celestial. On the larger plane, he believed the light will eventually overcome the dark and advised aligning with the forces of light, the forces of God. He laid out techniques for doing so through cultivation of tenderness, generosity, respect, "the soft eye", mindfulness, meditation, time in nature and with animals,[23] and avoidance of dark places, people, and media that sell specialness, fear, degradation, and greed. Move from the cold cerebral mind into the warmth of heart and feeling. "There is strength in softness. Remember, It's all backwards," he was oft quoted.[21] Additional Themes Wilde was a staunch supporter of peace in the world, the philosophy of live and let live,[9] animal rights and vegetarianism. Tom Lishman eulogised him this way— We must remember that just because he has gone back to the non-physical realm he is still very much with us, we should not forget that his time here was set and agreed upon and he has completed his mission, that being said all fringe dwellers must now rise above the despair and confusion they feel and turn it into positive energy and by doing this they will honour his work in the best possible way. Stuart will be remembered for making a huge contribution towards the new golden age of peace and love that is fast approaching, his followers will indeed take up his torch and light up planet earth like never before. We must ponder this question...What if by him leaving his body at this time he can contribute even more to world peace ?, anyone that knows him will know that he will be doing just that."[24]
Nat, Cody, and Robert have delved into a few little known gems in the past, and we're pleased to add 1985's THE QUIET EARTH by Geoff Murphy to that list. It's a quasi-remake of , which we covered all the way back in , but with its own unique spin and willingness to sidestep some of the traps that the earlier film fell into. Also, we open the mailbag and in response to the Episode on THX 1138 we rank all of George Lucas's films.

This week Gill and Roscoe ponder the End Times with four films concerned with the horrific realities of a post-apocalyptic future, and it's a fairly international affair. From the US, we have "A Boy and His Dog" (1975), from New Zealand, we have "The Quiet Earth" (1985) while the UK and Denmark bring us two very different versions of "Z for Zachariah" (1984/2015). "The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door." - Fredrick Brown It's time for Oktay, Erik, and Ryan to wallow in their manly loneliness in a post apocalyptic hellscape as they drive around Manhattan in a corvette, hunting dear, and talking to mannequins. Then, they try their best to make sense out of a New Zealand where every other living thing disappeared without a trace. Maybe they forgot that the Return of the King premiere was taking place in Wellington at the time. It's time to dive into the ever reliable "Last man on Earth" premise with two very different examples, both picked by Ryan. First up, a discussion on whether or not 2007's mega hit "I Am Legend" is overrated turns into a dissection of Will Smith's recent career choices. Then, 1985's trippy and unpredictable Kiwi sci-fi "The Quiet Earth" takes the co-hosts to a world where complex ideas about parallel dimensions and a man in a dress yelling at a cardboard cutout of Hitler can coexist. As usual, thank you for listening, please send us your comments so we can improve the show, and look forward to new episodes when our kick-ass Pacific Northwest-based film critics will discuss one overrated and one underrated film that share the same genre, style, or plot.
