Did New Who start in 2005 … or 1973? An A to Z of UK Television Drama

Andy and Martin travel back in time to the summer of 1965 and the adventures of HR consultant Drew Heriot and his sister-in-law Anne as they face up to the machinations of 'Undermind': aliens who have brainwashed British citizens in order to cause national unrest ahead of their imminent invasion. Their various schemes include: spreading pirate radio misinformation; inciting youth violence in a seaside resort; influencing the works of a popular children's author; the distribution of suicide-inducing birthday records; interference with the printing of exam papers, and most abominably of all, the assassination of Eamonn Andrews! Yes, really. Starring Jeremy Wilkin (best known as Kellman in Revenge of the Cybermen) and Rosemary Nichols (Annabelle in ITC's Department S) Undermind is an, often overlooked, sci-fi oddity created and ‘evolved by' Robert Banks Stewart and written by many familiar Doctor Who writers including Bill Strutton, David Whitaker and Robert Holmes. Other regular cast members were John Barron and Denis Quilley, while big name guest stars included Michael Gough, Peter Barkworth, Barrie Ingham, Judy Parfitt, Derek Francis and Philip Latham. Although there is much to enjoy here, the series' convoluted and sometimes incoherent plots tend to undermine (geddit?) its overall feel. Join Andy and Martin as they attempt to review all 11 episodes in 2 hours! And find out which of them was brainwashed into drawing Mulligatawny (a one-eyed turd with claws) while making their notes. Big Methane, Swampies, the legendary Philip Madoc, and Brussell Sprout-looking Giant Squid-Gods? It's that time Season 16 where things start to drop off a bit, as we get to The Power of Kroll! There's some drama behind the scenes on this one – including actors being turned green for much longer than planned, and script writer Robert Holmes being a little petulant!   Join us as we discuss elaborate uniform designs for rig workers, colonialism (of course) and the revival of associated tired tropes that we have seen so many times before (hello companion sacrifice!), how the roguish Rohm-Dutt is actually quite charismatic, whether the Swampies would taste minty or of seaweed, and how the whole story is crafted around a fart joke. Also worth listening out for is Julie's rage over badly handled woodwind.   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the entirety of the Season available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). And with this bonus episode, Ken & Mike close out Season 3 of "Prepare the Timelash!!" with a look at a Fourth Doctor classic, "Pyramids of Mars". They get into a lot with this one, including why the Fourth Doctor/Sarah Jane pair is so darn good, why Sutekh the Destroyer is one of the best villains ever to grace the show, and Robert Holmes' predilection for poachers in a story. Did they save the best story for last in this season? Listen and find out!

Tread Perilously's celebration of Tom Baker's 90th year continues with the Doctor Who story called "Pyramids of Mars." A quirk in time and space forces the TARDIS to land at UNIT HQ some 60 years before it is built. Instead, they find a priory owned by archeologist Marcus Scarman. For his part, the explorer has been possessed by Sutek, an alien imprisoned under a Saqaara pyramid for millennia. Will The Doctor and Sarah Jane figure out the Osirian's plan before he launches a rocket at Mars or will the bodies of hapless Edwardians keep piling up? Erik points out the Robert Holmes hidden in the proceedings. Justin enjoys the silliness of it all. Elisabeth Sladen proves to be the MVP as Sarah Jane snarks her way through the adventure. The Scarman brothers prove to be compelling guest characters even as Justin and Erik can't help but riff on Sutek's genocidal tendencies. Ancient Aliens comes up every so often. The presence of a poacher leads to a lot of discussion. The many highs of the story are tempered by an unusually soggy middle and an obscure plot. Erik figures out where Sutek was the whole time and Ramses II starts selling discount pyramids.

Are you an outgoing script editor? Do you have a grievance against a government agency? Is it specifically the tax authority? Well, why not write an entire serial of a kids' show about the unfair burden of taxes? It's a sure-fire winner, right?!? Right!?!? Even if not, it's what happened for us to get The Sun Makers. Good job, Robert Holmes. Thankfully, your three favourite members of Watchers in the Fourth Dimension are here to dissect it for you!   Join us as we discuss the unfair burden of taxes (surprise, surprise), the Doctor being a sore loser, whether the Collector is an anti-semetic trope, whether or not Leela and Bisham actively ran over some Inner Retinue guards, and how we miss Vicki and Jamie helping to foment rebellion. Tread Perilously celebrates the 60th Anniversary of Doctor Who with two straight months of that very special programme. First up: "The Deadly Assassin." When The Doctor is summoned back to Gallifrey, he has a vision of the Lord President being assassinated. His attempts to foil the plot are ignored and he soon becomes the prime suspect in the murder. But to save his life, he nominates himself to replace the slain head of state. Will The Doctor end up leading his own people? Will he discover the true assassin and the real shape of the conspiracy? And will an old foe appear from the shadows for one more tussle with the Time Lord? Justin has complicated feelings toward this story. Erik revels in the Robert Holmes script, although even he admits there are problems with Episode 3. He also attempts a Tom Baker impression. The lack of a companion is quite noticeable. Justin admits he's just not that into The Master. A Bane discussion, naturally, occurs. Justin attempts to understand key points of Doctor Who continuity. The Hi-Hats' place in The Warriors gets examined. A curious idea about Gallifrey itself comes into play and an attempt is made to grasp Time Lord politics.

Omnibus time again, this time with poor old The Power of Kroll, a rather unloved entry into the Tom Baker canon, and indeed the Robert Holmes one. There's thunder (and that's not just the expression on Philip Madoc's face), lightning, and not a lot that's very frightening but it does have a superb cast on paper and a big giant squid. Worship at the alter of Kroll, or else host Toby Hadoke and guest (playwright and journalist) Ian Winterton will come round and thwack you with their big tentacles.

Tread Perilously's annual Doctor Who months returns with the 20th Anniversary special, "The Five Doctors." When the Doctor discovers his previous selves are being plucked from time, he sets the TARDIS for Gallifrey. Meanwhile, on the Time Lord homeworld, The First, Second, and Third Doctors are reunited with friends and companions to brave the Death Zone -- a region of the planet host to deadly games and the Tomb of Rassilon, the greatest figure in Time Lord history. Will they discover he was a mad tyrant or will his wisdom aid the Doctors in defeating their true adversary?  Episode writer Terrance Dicks gets compared to Robert Holmes. His references to Doctor Who history throughout the story also get examined. Justin disagrees with pairing the Second Doctor and the Brigadier. He also doubts the show was a phenomenon in 1983. The pair discuss the unending 80s revival and Tegan Jovanka's new look for the special. The unfortunate role for Sarah Jane Smith in the episode, Susan's almost-unacknowledged place in Doctor Who history, and the Welsh countryside also earn some chatter. Erik plants the idea of Tom Hiddleston as a younger First Doctor in Justin's mind. Actor Richard Hurndall, who plays the First Doctor in the special, gets a review all his own. Justin evaluates Turlough and a proposed new "Five Doctors" quickly becomes "The Six-and-a-Half Doctors."
