Tread Perilously continues to celebrate 90 years of Tom Baker with the Doctor Who story called "The Invisible Enemy." When the Virus of the Nucleus of the Swarm makes contact with human astronauts on a relief mission to Titan in the year 5000, The Doctor and Leela are also caught up in events. Soon, The Doctor is infected with the Nucleus itself while Leela is strangely immune. The pair arrive on a medical asteroid. The Doctor asks renowned scientist Dr. Marius to clone him and miniaturize the clone so The Doctor can take a fantastic voyage inside his own body. Will it stop the Swarm or will Leela prove to have the best solution? Erik and Justin are surprised to see actor Michael Sheard twice in two weeks and go on about his time as both Admiral Ozzel in The Empire Strikes Back and Hitler in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Louise Jameson and Leela prove to be standouts even as the script constantly mentions how dumb the character is meant to be. Erik discusses the work of producer Graham Williams while Justin determines Baker's mental health during the recording of the story. The dodgy (and occasionally great) special effects examined, K-9 makes his debut in Doctor Who continuity, and Marius proves to have too much character.

We've been on a bit more than a summer break, but we're back and its about (World Enough and) Time... This month we go back to our roots and the very first story we covered on the podcast way back in 2017: Spearhead from Space. We archived that episode as the sound quality was terrible, but also because we didn't really do this seminal Pertwee classic justice. This time around its a proper deep dive as we talk about stuff we've not thought about before, despite knowing this story inside out: - The geography of the story: where is Oxley Woods in relation to Ashbridge Cottage Hospital and indeed AutoPlastics? And are any of those near Epping? - How automated is the Plastics Factory and why is Ransome's doll so special? - Is the 'Doctors Only' sign sexist? - Is this the worst ever exhibition at Madame Tussauds? - Does the Doctor drop calling Liz Doctor as a power move? - And our own twist on 'Gay or European?': 'Auton or sweaty?' All this, Louise Jameson, an argument about better stories than Spearhead, and a Companions quiz. What else could you possibly need? We love you (and we're very glad to be back)! First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on May 21st 2023 Long time listeners to VISION ON SOUND will already be aware that PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI, our returning guest on this week's edition, is a very avid fan of the TV detective series BERGERAC, and, whilst he has mentioned this from time-to-time on his appearances, we realised that we'd never had a sit down to just talk about that show.   So this week we decided to rectify that omission, and for the next hour we have a nice little chat about what it is about that particular cop show, mostly set on Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, which he found appealing enough to ensure that he not only has the complete series on his shelves so that he can watch it whenever the mood catches him, but also that he has an emergency backup set of BERGERAC just in case the first goes wrong, and yet another set – albeit one featuring inferior edits of the programmes – stashed in another place in case the first two can't be accessed.   Think of it as being a bit like prepping for archive TV enthusiasts.   The series BERGERAC was first made and broadcast by the BBC in 1981, and continued to make regular appearances in the schedules for more than a decade, finally signing off, nine series, and eighty-seven episodes later on Boxing Day, 1991, and seems slightly unusual nowadays for not being a detective series based around characters adapted from a series of novels.   BERGERAC was created by ROBERT BANKS STEWART, as is rather well known, as a replacement for his previous series SHOESTRING which came to a sudden abrupt end, and left the BBC looking around for a similar but different Detective series to fill its place in the schedules, and, BERGERAC must be considered to be a very successful solution to a rather interesting problem.   The series starred JOHN NETTLES as JIM BERGERAC, a detective with a troubled past, TERENCE ALEXANDER as his troublesome ex-father in law CHARLIE HUNGERFORD, and SEAN ARNOLD as his boss BARNEY CROZIER at the newly formed  “BUREAU DES ETRANGES” on the Channel Islands, alongside several glamorous women like CECILE PAOLI, CELIA IMRIE, LOUISE JAMESON, THERESE LIOTARD, DEBORAH GRANT and LISA GODDARD, who seemed to find Jim irresistibly attractive, sometimes for several seasons in lead and guest roles, alongside a whole host of exactly the sort of character actors that the likes of viewers like me enjoy spotting in these kinds of shows.   BERGERAC made the most of its picturesque JERSEY locations, and the vintage 1947 burgundy-coloured TRIUMPH ROADSTER Jim drove, to delight audiences across the 1980s, and PAUL has very fond memories of growing up watching this series, not least because of the childhood holidays he spent on the island. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Doctor Who: the World Enough and Time podcast

Is it hot in here or are we just in a parallel universe? Andy & Alex uncover sexual metaphor aplenty as they grab Greg's huge pipe, experience a dodgy flange, and get all angry (and hairy) as they reach Penetration Zero. To say nothing of Benton drilling his troops. Yes, its Inferno, that highly-regarded Season 7 story which warns of the dangers of fracking, patriarchal arrogance, and of smearing green goo on your face. The pair agree that there is much to enjoy here but both declare that unlike parallel Liz, Greg and Petra they wouldn't risk their lives to save parallel Andy and Alex. As Alex succinctly puts it: ‘Parallel Alex can go f*** herself!' They also muse that a better name for the project would have been the 'Entirely Safe' project rather than 'Inferno'! They also discover that Stahlman means Man of Steel, that giant name badges are very much on trend, and that Doctor Who is very good at chronicling society's changing relationship with computers. See! We can be serious sometimes. Elsewhere we find out that Louise Jameson has taken up shitsu massage (or is that shiatsu?) and the Time Space Visualiser is on the brink. All this and Sean Maguire and Lulu too. Quiet at the back, Alex is undertaking a complex scientific task! Next Time: The Hand of Fear

The Review of Death: A Doctor Who Podcast

Billy and Matt discuss Christopher Eccleston's recent comments on returning to Doctor Who before diving into 'Underworld' from Season 15, starring Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor and Louise Jameson as Leela. Infamous for it's dodgy blue screen (CSO) effects due to heavy budget cuts, does the script stand out against the production issues or is it worthy of being considered the worst story of the incredibly popular Tom Baker era? Horror of Fang Rock is the first serial of the 15th season of the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, first broadcast in four weekly parts on BBC1 from 3 to 24 September 1977.The TARDIS lands on the island of Fang Rock off the south coast of England in the early 20th century. Noticing that the lighthouse isn't functioning properly, the Doctor, in his fourth incarnation (or infinity+4 by today's reckoning) played by Tom Baker, decides to investigate.Upon arrival at the lighthouse, the Doctor discovers the dead body of one of the keepers. The other two keepers, old superstitious Reuben and the keen young Vince Hawkins, report that a light fell from the sky near the island. They also explain the electricity flow to the lamp on the lighthouse has become erratic and the Doctor deduces something is feeding on the flow. Reuben does not help matters with his constant references to the mythical Beast of Fang Rock, which reputedly once terrorised the lighthouse. As the Doctor and and his companion, Leela (played by Louise Jameson) explore, something moves Ben's body out of the lighthouse and onto the island, and they witness a curious electric crackling which seems to have killed fish nearby.$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff.
