At ITEXPO / MSP EXPO, Jon Arnold, Principal of J Arnold & Associates, joined Doug Green to share his perspective on the event's evolution, the growing dominance of AI in conference programming, and the escalating fraud challenges facing the communications industry. A long-time analyst and contributor, Arnold participated in four sessions during the show, primarily focused on cybersecurity, mobile communications, and fraud mitigation. Arnold noted that while ITEXPO continues to feature its traditional telecom and MSP programming, AI now permeates nearly every track—from agentic AI discussions to vertical-focused sub-events. At the same time, he observed a visible shift on the show floor, with fewer hardware vendors and more companies centered on cybersecurity and risk mitigation. “There's a steadiness to this show that I kind of like year after year,” Arnold said, while acknowledging that the exhibitor footprint and attendee mix are evolving. Across his moderated sessions, a central theme emerged: fraud is accelerating, and AI is amplifying the challenge. Topics included branded calling, RCS, KYC/Know Your Customer frameworks, and the persistent vulnerabilities within mobile networks. Arnold emphasized that fraud has become a multi-layered ecosystem problem. “Before AI, the bad guys were maybe half a step ahead. With AI, they're three or four steps ahead,” he observed, highlighting how rapidly attackers are leveraging automation and generative tools. A standout moment for Arnold was a presentation by ethical hacker Jesse “Hackajack” Tuttle, who illustrated the pervasiveness of fraud from a former attacker's perspective. The session reinforced the need for stronger regulatory frameworks, greater carrier coordination, and increased industry urgency around consumer protection. As the communications industry balances innovation with risk, Arnold's takeaway was clear: the fraud problem is worse than many assume, and solving it will require deeper collaboration across the ecosystem. At the Fall '25 vCon in Washington, D.C., Doug Green, Publisher of Technology Reseller News, spoke with Jon Arnold, Principal of J Arnold & Associates, about why vCon matters, how it fits into the broader AI and communications landscape, and why legal frameworks around compliance and consent are as important as the technology itself. Arnold situates vCon—“virtual conversations”—as a response to a world where interactions are no longer just human-to-human, but also human-to-bot and bot-to-bot, generating vast amounts of conversational data that most organizations are not yet capturing or using effectively. Arnold explains that vCon is not a product but a standard—much like SIP was for VoIP—designed to create an open, interoperable ecosystem for conversational data. By encapsulating both data and metadata from calls, chats, and other interactions into a secure, portable container, vCon can help enterprises manage and analyze conversations across multiple channels, platforms, and use cases. This, he notes, is critical for domains such as UC, customer service, and broader AI-driven applications where structured and unstructured conversational data is becoming a strategic asset. A distinguishing feature of this event, Arnold observes, is the strong presence of legal and policy experts. With AI amplifying both innovation and risk, he underscores the centrality of compliance and consent. Without clear regulatory frameworks and governance, vCon-style capabilities could accelerate a slide toward a “surveillance society,” where every interaction is recorded and tracked without adequate safeguards. Getting lawyers and regulators involved early, Arnold suggests, improves the odds that vCon will scale in a way that balances innovation with consumer protection and trust. On the question of monetization, Arnold draws parallels to the early days of hosted voice and UCaaS: the ecosystem is still forming, a few players are close to real revenue, and many potential use cases are only now being discovered. As with other major technology shifts, he expects some of the most valuable applications to emerge “off-label,” driven by users who find unexpected value once the tools are in their hands. With an open standard, an emerging community, and early traction among sponsors and innovators, Arnold sees strong potential for vCon to become a foundational layer in the next era of AI-enabled communications. As companies rethink how they provide customer experiences (CX), a new form of AI capability, agentic AI, is quickly changing how work is accomplished in contact centres. In the recent episode of the Tech Transformed podcast, Dialpad Lead Product Manager Calvin Hohener sits down with host Jon Arnold, Principal at J Arnold & Associates. They discuss the transition from legacy chatbots to more autonomous agents capable of completing tasks and improving customer interactions. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding the technology's impact on enterprise architecture, the need for clean data, and the strategic implications for C-level executives. Hohener emphasises the importance of starting with clear use cases and working closely with vendors to maximise the potential of AI in business operations. From Legacy Chatbots to Agentic AIMost people have used chatbots and found them lacking. Hohener explains why: earlier conversational AI was based on retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). These systems could take user input, search a knowledge base or the internet, and provide an answer. This was helpful for customer service queries, but limited.“Previous AI models could retrieve and return information, but now we're moving into a new phase with agentic AI.” Agentic AI can take action rather than just providing information. For AI agents to succeed, organisations must first organise their data. “How your internal knowledge is structured is crucial. Even if the data is unorganised, you need to know its location and ensure it's clean,” stated Hohener.Agentic systems depend on internal knowledge, including knowledge base articles, CRM notes, and process documentation. If this foundation is disordered, the agent's output will not be reliable. This isn't about achieving ideal data cleanliness from the start; it's about knowing what information exists, where it is, and whether it can be trusted. If an AI agent bases its decisions on outdated, conflicting, or incomplete content, it will struggle to perform tasks aptly, regardless of how sophisticated the model is. Enterprises need at least basic clarity about which systems hold which knowledge, who is responsible for them, and whether there is consistency across sources.Hohener noted that organisations often overlook how quickly conflicting information can undermine an otherwise well-designed agent. A single outdated procedure or mismatched policy in a knowledge repository can lead an AI to produce incorrect results or halt during workflow execution. Keeping internal content clean, deduplicated, and consistent gives the agent a reliable, valid source. This reliability becomes crucial when AI starts taking meaningful actions, not just providing answers.By focusing on data readiness early, enterprises not only reduce deployment obstacles but also set the stage for scaling agentic AI across more complex processes. In many ways, preparing data isn't just a technical task; it's an organisational one. How Human Agents Work with AI Agents? The Dialpad Lead Product Manager noted that human roles, too, will evolve with agentic AI entering the contact centre. For instance, human agents will take on more of an advisory role—reviewing conversation traces and helping adjust the models.”Instead of...

In Part 1, Lee and Paul are joined by North and Central American football expert Jon Arnold to talk about the craziness in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. Why did Curacao fly from Bermuda to Jamaica via London in the November window? Why has Haiti's French coach Sebastien Migne never set foot on the island? How did an uncelebrated last-gasp own goal save Suriname's World Cup hopes? And was it a cowardly move for Steve McClaren to resign as Jamaica coach with the play-offs coming up in March? In Part 2, the focus switches to three stories across three different continents that have caught our eye at Sweeper HQ: promoted Thun's Swiss title charge, Al Hilal and Al Merrikh's move to Rwanda, and a controversial new championship title in Argentina. What has coach Mauro Lustrinelli done to help Thun take the Super League by storm this season? What exclusive club have the Sudanese duo of Al Hilal and Al Merrikh joined by moving to Rwanda? At the Wildix Partner Day in Venice, Technology Reseller News Publisher Doug Green spoke with Jon Arnold, Principal of J Arnold & Associates, for a candid analyst perspective on Wildix's strategy and its growing impact on the SMB and channel markets. Arnold noted that while Wildix may be lesser known in North America, its channel-first model, AI-driven innovation, and SMB focus set it apart from larger UCaaS players. “Wildix isn't trying to be everything to everyone — they're laser-focused on SMBs that want modern, ROI-driven communications, not just dial tone,” said Arnold. “They understand how to meet these businesses where they are, whether they're still on legacy PBX systems or rebuilding after the pandemic's patchwork solutions.” He emphasized that Wildix's message is no longer about PBX replacement, but about transforming communications into a strategic asset. “Voice is no longer just about making phone calls — it's data. Once AI enters the picture, conversations become business intelligence, and that's where Wildix is delivering real value,” Arnold explained. Arnold also praised the company's verticalized offerings, including AI-powered retail and healthcare solutions that demonstrate tangible returns for customers and simplify the sales process for MSPs. “They're giving the channel out-of-the-box vertical solutions with integrations already done — that's gold for partners, because it accelerates time to market and reduces disruption,” he said. From workflow automation and open APIs to remote-friendly deployment, Arnold concluded that Wildix exemplifies a vendor that both lives and delivers on the distributed-work model. “They've stayed true to their SMB roots while bringing the power of AI to that market — and that's a story worth paying attention to,” he added.
