This season as we were forced to sit still, I wanted to travel through the stories of people in other places and explore how they were stepping out with a renewed sense of style. But like everyone else I really wanted to step out too! After a difficult socially distanced year the natural extrovert in me was desperate to socialise, interact and experience life outside my own home. So this is the Style Stories: Stepping Out live bonus episode where I was grateful to have the opportunity to host and record a live presentation and fashion parade at Grand Days, my favourite vintage store in Kings Cross, in front of a room full of actual people. Translating Style Stories into a live setting was always a goal for 2021 not only to enhance the visual experience of stories about fashion and style but to strengthen, grow and connect with my circle of listeners and the creative community I have come to belong to. It's a bleak, cold morning, on July 4, 1975.  A 34-year-old man named Eddie Trigg waits inside the Carousel Cabaret nightclub, known to most as a seedy bar located in the heart of Sydney's Kings Cross.  But that's not why Eddie, with a beard and sharp hazel eyes, is there. After all, it's just past 10:30am. He is there to meet someone.  Juanita Nielsen, the 37-year-old owner and publisher of the newspaper NOW, makes her way towards the establishment. These will be the final moments of her life.  It's 10:40am when she arrives. She is greeted at reception and escorted upstairs to the VIP Lounge. She is there for what she believes is a work meeting. She is never seen again.  Whispers have circulated around Sydney since. Some say her body is buried under an airport runway. One of Sydney's most stubborn cold cases could yet be solved. In 1975, the newspaper publisher and activist Juanita Nielsen disappeared. She was a high profile figure whose work campaigning against developments in the Kings Cross neighbourhood of Sydney brought her to the attention of some of Australia's most notorious criminals. For four-and-a-half decades, the truth about her death has remained a mystery, but a new piece of evidence might change that. Today on The Signal, documentary-maker Keiran Mcgee has been piecing together the last few days of Juanita Nielsen's life for the ABC podcast, Unravel. Keiran gets on a plane across the ditch to her old home, New Zealand, to track down one of the main suspects in Juanita Nielsen's suspected murder ... with unexpected outcomes. Back home, a new lead unearths someone who's never spoken before. The man was a young law student recruited by police to go undercover inside jail. He tells of a terrifying cat-and-mouse encounter that led to a detailed confession of murder. The sting also reveals a money trail involving crime boss Abe Saffron and an alleged attempt to influence the outcome of a court case. Both potentially game-changing revelations, the investigator claims, were ignored or buried by senior police.

In the weeks leading up to her disappearance, Juanita Nielsen received strange phone calls with requests for her to meet to talk about advertising in her newspaper. She told her business partner something wasn't right about them. After some serious digging, Keiran tracks down a man who owns up to being the voice behind those calls. He has never spoken publicly about what he knows. Lloyd Marshall was one of three men charged over a plan to abduct Juanita, but later acquitted. He worked at the Carousel Club and divulges disturbing details of how the underworld operated in Kings Cross around that time. Lloyd thinks Juanita was conned into turning up to the venue that final day. He shares with Keiran his suspicions that his boss Jim Anderson was involved in Juanita's disappearance.

When Juanita Nielsen went missing 46 years ago, there was no shortage of suspects, and yet no-one has been charged in relation to her disappearance. A reward for information about her disappearance has just been announced by NSW Police and a new podcast series shines new light on the case. At primary school, Keiran McGee did a talk about her activist aunt Juanita Nielsen telling the class she was murdered by the Kings Cross underground. Her classmates didn't clap. Decades later, Keiran is embarking on her own investigation to find answers for her family about Juanita's unsolved disappearance and get to know the aunt she never knew. Her first interview is Juanita's ex-boyfriend, who was one of the last people to see her alive.  Keiran, along with Aunty Pip, discovers a trove of documents that other family members have put aside, more than twenty boxes revealing numerous leads and fresh evidence from witnesses who've never been made public.

And so, the search is on yet again, 46 years after Juanita Neilson went missing. Last week the NSW Police offered a $1m reward for information that will lead to the discovery of her remains and information as to how she got there.  So good luck to all of you reward seekers. With all the main players long dead I believe the trail is stone cold. Juanita Nielsen is the only way I have been able to unravel this outlaw gang in Kings Cross today. Following the history, money and how the missing persons were a way that this gang utilised to control murders who are drug dealers. Did the king of crime in Sydney murder a journalist with a ton of gumption and a spectacular 1970s updo? Or was it the developer she was fighting to save her home? Or someone even closer to home?...

It’s the 4th July 1974. Kings Cross Sydney. Heiress Juanita Nielsen attends a meeting to discuss advertising for the Carousel Club in her newspaper called ‘NOW’. She is never seen again and her body is never found. Was it her opposition to development in the area or something else she was about to expose.

Juanita Nielsen was an Australian newspaper publisher and conservationist who was leading a campaign against high rise development in Victoria Street, Kings Cross in Sydney. On the 4th of July 1975 she disappeared, never to be seen again.  A coronial inquest found that Nielsen had most likely been murdered. But the case has never been officially solved. In this episode we are going to look at the criminal underbelly of Sydney in the late 1960s and 1970s. We will try and get to the bottom of just what happened to Juanita Nielsen and why.
