Sarito Carroll is an author and former member of the Osho Rajneesh movement. Born in 1969, she was brought to India at age nine by her mother, who had become a disciple of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (later known as Osho). What was intended as a brief visit turned into a permanent stay when her mother decided to join the ashram. At twelve, Sarito moved to Oregon, becoming one of the first settlers at Rajneeshpuram, a controversial commune built on the Big Muddy Ranch. She details her journey through the movement, the trauma she endured, and her path to healing. She is the author of In the Shadow of Enlightenment. What happens when a spiritual movement turns into a political force—and then spirals into one of the most bizarre cult stories in modern history?"Rajneeshpuram: The Cult of Rajneesh" takes you deep into the heart of a utopian dream gone dangerously wrong. In the early 1980s, a charismatic Indian guru named Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his devoted followers left India and built a sprawling commune in the Oregon desert. What began as a spiritual experiment quickly transformed into a surreal and shocking tale of power, control, bioterrorism, and international scandal.Episode show notes: www.3amfear.comNarrated by: Nikita FerraoInstagram: @3amfearpod@ncferraoauthorFind me on Youtube @ 3AM Fear PodcastFree thriller eBook: www.ncferrao.comPodcast Music: https://www.purple-planet.comEpisode Music: Music: Halloween Theme 1 by Alexander Nakarada (www.creatorchords.com) Licensed under Creative Commons BY Attribution 4.0 License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/SUBSCRIBE us on YOUTUBE: https://bit.ly/3qumnPHFollow on Facebook: https://bit.ly/33RWRtPFollow on Instagram: https://bit.ly/2ImU2JVEmail me on nikita@3amfear.comSources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneeshpuramhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneesh_movementhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneeshhttps://www.neh.gov/humanities/2018/spring/feature/rajneeshpuram-was-more-utopia-desert-it-was-mirrorhttps://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/oct/12/abuse-rajneesh-cult-children-communeshttps://www.amazon.in/Rajneeshpuram-Inside-Bhagwan-Failed-American/dp/1641604727https://www.thecut.com/2018/04/9-rajneesh-followers-on-what-wild-wild-country-got-wrong.htmlhttps://www.britannica.com/topic/Rajneesh-movementhttps://www.reddit.com/r/WildWildCountry/comments/8asxhp/ama_for_former_rajneeshpuram_resident_i_lived/ https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/survivor-of-bhagwan-shree-rajneeshs-sex-cult-reveals-decades-of-abuse-6675679 https://people.com/crime/wild-wild-country-bhagwan-rajneesh-oregon-today/https://au.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/australian-cults-the-rajneesh-movement-14899/https://www.huffpost.com/entry/cult-wild-wild-country-netflix_n_5ab2b37de4b054d118df49c1https://www.oregonencyclopedia.org/articles/rajneeshees/https://www.oregonlive.com/tv/2018/03/netflix_documentary_on_rajnees.html

By day, Kevin Curtis was a janitor at a Mississippi hospital. By night, he was an Elvis impersonator, performing with his brother - who was also an Elvis impersonator. But after seeing something disturbing in the morgue, Kevin became consumed with conspiracies about illegal organ harvesting rings. Fueled by his paranoia, Kevin damaged personal relationships and crossed swords with powerful people in Tupelo. Then in 2013, when ricin-laced letters were sent to Kevin's enemies - as well as the President - authorities homed in on him. Was the scheme the Elvis impersonator's attempt to foil the body parts cabal once and for all…or was it a conspiracy to get rid of him? From the directors of “Wild Wild Country” comes Netflix's “The Kings of Tupelo.” Filled with its twists and turns, and extensive access to the story's colorful cast of characters, the series explores how one man's obsession could leave a whole town - and the White House - all shook up.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "THE KINGS OF TUPELO" BEGIN IN THE FINAL TEN MINUTES OF THE EPISODEIn Crime of the Week: Old love, new love. Down to Watch is all about a royal rumble this week with Kings of Tupelo! Dan and Raul watched all three episodes of the new Netflix documentary series from the creators of the series Wild Wild Country and from the studio that made Tiger King if the trailers are to be believed. It's easy to see how the shows relate, as the Kings are mostly self-centered monarchs of tiny empires who all end up tied in some way to the star of the show, Kevin Curtis. KC is a wingnut conspiracy theorist who drives everyone around him insane and quickly dismantles his own life before finding himself behind bars for trying to assassinate the US president. This series promised a Mississippi feud that included guns, poison, severed limbs, a lot of network news coverage, and a little dog named Moo Cow. Does it deliver? Better listen to the pod!

An opinion poll from Opinium commissioned by Woman's Hour for a programme on SEND last month revealed 12% of mothers flagged lack of appropriate funded transport as a problem. Woman's Hour hears from three mums, Ellie Partridge, Ramandeep Kaur and Sabiha Aziz, who are struggling to transport their children with SEND to school, and in some cases are having to pay hundreds of pounds a month. Kylie Pentelow is joined by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman Amerdeep Somal as she exclusively shares the outcome of a complaint against Sandwell Council in the West Midlands for failing to provide transport for a disabled child.Today the Women's T20 cricket World Cup kicks off in the UAE. For some, this will be a tournament of firsts; At 11am, Scotland will be making their T20 debut against Bangladesh. Joining Kylie to look ahead to the event is the cricket commentator Alison Mitchell. In 2021, Netflix premiered the documentary Wild Wild Country which drew global attention to the Rajneesh movement, a group of around 30,000 people at the movement's height, who followed an Indian spiritual guru called Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. But what really drew the attention of many of the people who had grown up as part of this international community was that the experience of children was barely reflected in the six-part series. Maroesja Perizonius and her mother were part of the Rajneesh movement, joining when Maroosha was six. Maroesja has created a new documentary, Children of the Cult. She joins Kylie to talk about this very deeply personal project along with Sargam, another woman whose family became followers when she was a child. Dhyan Ji is a spiritual teacher, meditation coach and spiritual event organiser based in Cheshire, UK. In this deep and fascinating conversation, Dhyan begins by recounting a magical moment at the age of 6, where she suddenly embodied a complete sense of oneness with nature and the elements. This experience at such an early age set the tone for what was to come, as her family soon moved to Oregon in the US to live in Osho's infamous community. The story of what happened at Rajneeshpuram was captured in the Netflix documentary series Wild Wild Country, due to the controversy and chaos that surrounded what happened there. However, for 7 year old Dhyan, it was a time of beautiful memories, of freedom in nature and of deep daily spiritual practice through mantra and meditation. These early experiences were just the beginning of a life of many nuances. And many further profound experiences have shaped her understanding of a deeper truth. Her direct encounters with the space beyond the mind have not only expanded her awareness, but also informed the work she does and how she serves. Many topics are covered as the conversation unfolds, with Dhyan offering beautifully clear explanations and perspectives in her own unique way. She is extremely knowledgeable, and yet incredibly humble. A delicate, powerful soul for sure. Her advice for older women is simple, yet important, and often overlooked. Step inside the twisted world of the Rajneeshpuram cult with our latest episode, where an enigmatic Indian guru's quest for utopia leads to a scandalous slice of Oregon's history. We spotlight the tumultuous rise and fall of the Rajneeshpuram commune, starting from their head-scratching financial prowess in acquiring a vast ranch, to their audacious attempts at sculpting a city of their own. Our conversation isn't just a history lesson; it's a deep dive into a community's struggle with an ambitious cult's explosive impact, where salad bars became vectors for bioterrorism, and small-town America clashed with an influx of red-clad devotees. As we thread through the intricate legal battles that the Rajneeshpuram faced, we dissect the blurred lines between church, state, and the ownership of sacred space. The narrative gets personal as the residents of Antelope, Oregon, stand their ground against the commune's expansion, making their town a symbol of the broader conflict. We don't shy away from the darker side either, revealing how a utopian dream distorted into a narrative of crime, eventually branding the group with terrorist undertones. Our exploration goes beyond the headlines, correcting historical inaccuracies and examining the legal repercussions for the commune's most prominent figures, like Ma Anand Sheela. In our final musings, we reflect on the Rajneesh legacy, pondering the transformation of their ranch and mulling over the philosophical echoes of Rajneesh's "ten commandments." Our hosts grapple with defining the group—cult, criminal organization, or a misunderstood community? We also step into the wider realm of cults and terrorist organizations, humorously comparing their evolution to stages of Pokémon, while engaging in rigorous debate about international law, extradition, and the enigmatic Edward Snowden. Join us on this historical rollercoaster, and you might just find that the line between cult and terrorist is finer than you think.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Connie Zweig, Ph.D., just released the book Meeting the Shadow on the Spiritual Path: The Dance of Darkness and Light in Our Search for Awakening. A guide to rekindling spiritual inspiration after betrayal and disillusionment. Within each of us is a spiritual longing that prompts us to unite with something greater than ourselves. Yet, no matter the spiritual path we choose, we inevitably encounter our own shadow. This guide explores how to use shadow work to recover from spiritual abuse or betrayal and move from spiritual naivete to spiritual maturity. Explains why we are drawn to charismatic leaders, what we unconsciously give away to them, and how to reclaim our inner spiritual authority. Explores how to recover from spiritual abuse or betrayal by a teacher or group, including breaking free of denial, projection, and dependency, using psychology and shadow work. It extends #MeToo into the spiritual domain and tells the stories of contemporary clergy and spiritual leaders who acted out their shadows in destructive ways, leaving their followers traumatized and lost. Within each of us is a spiritual longing that prompts us to unite with something greater than ourselves, to awaken to our unity with all of life. Yet, no matter the spiritual path we choose, we inevitably encounter our own shadow, those unconscious aspects of ourselves that we suppress or deny, or the shadows of our teachers and their secret desires about money, sex, and power. Meeting the shadow can derail the journey, but according to Connie Zweig, Ph.D., we can learn to recover from losing faith and move from spiritual naivete to spiritual maturity. We talk about Explanation of the shadow Why shadow work completes us How the shadow can be projected onto others Religious betrayal and spiritual abuse Are you being gaslighted? Definition of spiritual integrity How culture is intertwined with religious, sexual abuse How to pick a spiritual teacher Spiritual integrity Consequences of spiritual abuse Watch the movie Wild Wild Country on Nexflix Our vision of religious and spiritual life must expand to include the human shadow. It is crucial to acknowledge the yearning that drives us toward the spiritual path, as it can lead us toward either ecstatic, transcendent experiences or terrible suffering. We must be wary of projecting this yearning onto an authoritarian teacher, priest, or guru who abuses their power, as this can have disastrous consequences. It is essential to learn from the cautionary tales of contemporary teachers of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Catholicism, who, by acting out their shadows, have left their followers traumatized and lost. We can learn from renowned teachers, such as Sufi poet Rumi, Hindu master Ramakrishna, and Christian saint Catherine of Siena, whose lives unfolded as they followed their spiritual yearning. Meeting the shadow is a painful but inevitable stage on the path toward a more mature spirituality. It is vital to use spiritual shadow work to reclaim inner spiritual authority, separate from abusive teachers, and heal from betrayal. Connie Zweig, Ph.D., a retired psychotherapist and former executive editor at Jeremy P. Tarcher Publishing, is co-author of Meeting the Shadow and Romancing the Shadow and author of the bestseller The Inner Work of Age: Shifting from Role to Soul and a novel, A Moth to the Flame: The Life of the Sufi Poet Rumi. She has been practicing and teaching meditation for more than 50 years. www.conniezweig.com

In this episode, Jane - then known as Ma Shanti Bhadra - was one of the members closest to Bhagwan and his counterpart, Sheila, and shares what it was like living in this cult-like community, how she was driven to attempt murder, her time in prison, and how she broke free from the community.   Discussion points   00:03:29 How Jane got involved in the Rajneesh movement 00:10:16 Jane's first experience with meditation 00:14:53 Jane's first trip to India 00:19:17 Getting to know Bhagwan 00:22:04 Moving to the ashram 00:25:32 Separating from her husband 00:31:17 How Bhagwan made money 00:34:29 Bhagwan's ranch in Oregon 00:40:48 Jane's relationship with Sheila 00:43:55 Jane's opinions on religion 00:47:22 Bhagwan's leadership 00:53:15 Jane's plan to kill Bhagwan's doctor 01:00:40 Realising Bhagwan's doctor didn't die 01:02:27 Jane's plan to leave the community 01:08:27 Arriving in Germany 01:12:25 Bhagwan leaving the ranch 01:13:40 Jane's legal battles and prison 01:20:28 Jane's decision to face extradition 01:24:17 Having the charges dropped 01:26:26 The importance of family 01:27:10 Jane's take on spirituality 01:28:40 The last time Jane spoke to Sheila 01:29:44 Jane's relationship with her children   Show Sponsors:  Smartkas: Providing food security as a service [https://www.instagram.com/smartkastech/?hl=en]   Najahi Events: The UAE's leading event promotor [https://www.instagram.com/najahievents/?hl=en]   Socials: Spencer Lodge https://www.instagram.com/spencer.lodge/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/spencerlodge/ https://www.youtube.com/c/SpencerLodgeTV   Jane Stork https://www.janestork.eu/BTS_index.html

Her latest book Sins of My Father: A Daughter, a Cult, a Wild Unravelling is her attempt to unravel the mysteries of a father who believed himself to be beyond reproach. When Lily was just six years old, her father left the family home to follow his guru to India, with the promise of enlightenment in the cult of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, the infamous leader who was recently covered in the popular documentary Wild Wild Country. She shares with Rachel insights from writing her recent memoir sharing memories from the long, hot summers of her teenage years in Italy in her father's commune to suffering the effects of his addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs. Rachel helps Lily unpack the complex relationship dynamics with her father and offers her insights on the familial complications inherent in so many families involved in high control groups. Before You Go: Rachel reflects on the impact suffered by the family members of those lost to cultic groups, pointing out the often unrecognized tragedies that stain so many family legacies for generations. A Little Bit Culty –We took zero breaks between seasons because we need you to hear this episode. Erin Robbins wasn't featured in Wild Wild Country, the 2018 Netflix Docuseries about Bhagawan Shree Rajneesh, also known as Osho. She lived it in real-time. She discovered the controversial guru's teachings at age 23 in 1977, and by the time he summoned her to his bedroom a year later for a ‘special and secret' meeting that quickly devolved into a vile and violating encounter (the first of many) she thought he was the greatest spiritual master who'd ever walked the planet. Erin disregarded her father, the co-founder, and owner of the Baskin-Robbins ice cream company, risking her family connection and inheritance in order to follow a man who would eventually lead his disciples into a world of murders, mass poisonings, and the gross sexual violation of children. After nearly 45 years of staying quiet, Erin is sharing her story after waking up just a year ago. This episode is full of potentially triggering content related to child abuse, coerced sterilization, and sexual assault. It also contains a staggering amount of bravery.
