Madison Dell'Aquila is, as her website proudly states, "constantly looking forward to challenging what people say can't be done." That mindset is strongly applied with the new platform Heretica, a website which aims to enhance the opportunities that women and gender diverse crew have on film and TV productions in Australia all the while dismantling the gender divide that exists in one of Australia's major cultural institutions. While Screen Australia has an initiative to address the gender divide in the screen industry - see the Gender Matters initiative - there's still minimal awareness of who is working within the industry who identifies as a women or non-binary. Heretica aims to address this by being a platform that provides people who wish to engage with women and non-binary crew the opportunity to make film and TV sets more reflective of real life. Having recently launched in August 2026, Heretica has already started to build an impressive array of names and creatives who are eager to start breaking down the gender division in the industry. In the last interview in our first Heretica Interviews series, and hopefully not the last, Andrew talks with Madison about the inspiration to force a change in an industry that has so often felt like it's resisted progressing into a better state of being. Bryan Brown has played more than 80 roles on stage and screen. Bryan also spent a period working in America, starring most notably in Cocktail and Gorillas In The Mist, before ultimately choosing Sydney over Hollywood.In the 1980s, working on the American-made series The Thorn Birds utterly changed Bryan's life. Leah Purcell grew up in a small town caring for her mum Florence. Her options after graduation were nursing or working at the meatworks. But after a push from her meatworks boss, Leah defied her own expectations for herself (R)Leah is now an acclaimed actor, playwright, and stage and film director.She grew up in the Queensland country town of Murgon. Although she came from a big family, it was just her and her mum for most of her childhood.Her dad lived in town, but didn't acknowledge her as his daughter.Leah's mum Flo was well respected. For a time she was the only Aboriginal woman allowed in the lounge area of the pub, which was a whites-only zone.Leah grew up with her Aunties and Uncles yarning around the kitchen table, and became a vivid storyteller herself.When she left school, it was expected she would go to work in the local meatworks, or become a nurse.But one of Leah's bosses at the meatworks refused to give her a permanent position, because he'd seen her in the local high school musical. When he told Leah she had a real talent, it helped change Leah's idea of herself.And so after her mum passed away, Leah left her small town.In Sydney she set off on her path to becoming an actor, a playwright and eventually a film director.Her first play 'Box the Pony' was inspired by her mother and grandmother's life story, and it became a huge hit.Today Leah is recognised as one of Australia's most important voices in the performing arts.Further informationLeah was awarded an Order of Australia in 2021 for her services to the performing arts. The 1990 Australian film Blood Oath (aka Prisoners of the Sun) is the harrowing true to life story of the military tribunal put together on the Indonesian island of Ambon to investigate the mass killings of Australian soldiers in a Japanese POW camp. Leading the charge is Captain Cooper, played by stalwart Aussie actor Bryan Brown (FX, Cocktail, Anyone But You) and a whole battalion of great supporting turns from Deborah Unger, Terry O' Quinn, Russell Crowe, Toshi Shioya, Tetsu Watanabe, George Takei and John Polson.
