David Williamson's iconic play, The Removalists, makes a powerful return to the stage, reviving its unflinching exploration of domestic violence, police brutality, and the abuse of power. Set in Melbourne in the 1970s, the story follows the turbulent events that unfold when Fiona Carter, with the help of her sister Kate and a removalist, attempts to leave her abusive husband, Kenny. The situation escalates as two police officers, Sergeant Simmonds and Constable Ross, become involved, revealing the dark underbelly of toxic masculinity. Melbourne Theatre Company's revival of Williamson's black comedy invites audiences to reflect on societal issues while enjoying a hearty laugh. Herb's picked a few Aussie classics and this week's pick is no exception with the war drama Gallipoli! Gallipoli, directed by Peter Weir, was a large-scale and highly ambitious undertaking that sought to depict the experiences of young Australian soldiers during the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign of World War I. Weir, who co-wrote the film with David Williamson, worked closely with producer Patricia Lovell and cinematographer Russell Boyd to bring the story to life with authenticity and emotional depth. Filming primarily took place in South Australia and Egypt, using real locations to evoke the desolate battlefields of the Gallipoli Peninsula. The filmmakers worked hard to realistically depict the soldiers' journey from rural Australia to the trenches, emphasizing the historical details of the era and the grim realities of war. Casting Mel Gibson and Mark Lee as the young soldiers Archy and Frank, Gallipoli highlighted the friendships, idealism, and patriotism that drove many Australians to enlist. Gibson, who was then relatively unknown, delivered a powerful performance alongside Lee, capturing the emotional toll of the war on young men. To create the movie's climactic scenes, the production team used hundreds of extras and recreated significant portions of the battlefield, ensuring the film's epic yet tragic feel. Though budget constraints were a challenge, the film achieved a lasting impact, celebrated for its historical significance, poignant storytelling, and for portraying a pivotal moment in Australian and World War I history. After undergoing basic training and developing a close friendship, they are sent to fight in the Gallipoli campaign against the Ottoman Empire. As they face the brutal realities of war, Archy and Frank come to understand the futility and horror of the battle they are part of. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

It's tough out there for New Zealand's hospitality industry. The rising cost of living in the past few years has seen everyone tightening their belts, and the skyrocketing cost of food in particular has been cutting into people's disposable income. With overheads increasing at the same time as patrons cutting back on their spending, it's no wonder we've seen a series of beloved bars and restaurants closing their doors for good. So what's next for the industry, and how can these businesses adapt to changing times? Today on The Front Page, we're joined by Herald deputy Lifestyle editor Johanna Thornton, and AUT Hospitality and Tourism professor David Williamson, to talk about the state of the sector, and where it needs to go from here. A man from Decatur, Eric Lee Francis, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and 10 years probation after pleading guilty to trafficking methamphetamine in Cobb County. The charges stem from a traffic stop in August 2021 when police found a large amount of meth and a glass pipe in Francis' car. In addition to the prison time, he has also been ordered to pay a $200,000 fine. The case was prosecuted by David Williamson and Elena Hernandez on behalf of the state, while Hina Asghar represented Francis at the plea. A 59-year-old man, Raymond Marti, was arrested and charged with impersonating an officer and possession of drugs outside a Marietta nightclub. He was wearing a shirt with "police" printed on the front, back, and sleeves, and when approached by a Marietta police officer, initially claimed to be a law enforcement officer. However, he later recanted and admitted to not being with the police. A search revealed he had a gun belt with a fake weapon, an outer vest carrier, and a stun gun, along with clear plastic bags filled with a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine. He remains held without bond in Cobb County jail. The first phase of the Chattahoochee Riverlands project, which aims to develop a 100-mile greenway of trails along the Chattahoochee River, has broken ground. The 2.7-mile stretch of trail in south Cobb, Georgia, will run from Veterans Memorial Highway to Mableton Parkway and is expected to open in 2026. The pilot project will act as proof of concept for the wider Riverlands project, which aims to connect 19 cities and seven counties. The $44m pilot is being funded by a combination of $26m in public money and $18m in private money. The project will transform a 100-mile stretch of riverfront from Lake Lanier to Newnan into a public space. Ser Familia, a Kennesaw-based nonprofit that offers family, social, and mental health services to Hispanic families in metro Atlanta, has received a $1 million grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. The grant will be used to expand the CAFE model and hire staff to provide assistance for families in Fair Oaks, a community near Smyrna with a population of about 9,000 people. The median income in Fair Oaks is $43,000, which is half of the Cobb County average, and one third of its residents lack health insurance. Ser Familia plans to hire a Project Director, Case Manager, and Family Navigator to connect families to services and provide emergency assistance for urgent needs. Those who want to help the Fair Oaks community can contact Ser Familia or the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. The Cobb Collaborative has unveiled a new Little Free Library at Garrett Middle School in Austell. The nonprofit organization aims to put books in the hands of children and adults around the world. The new LFL will be available 24/7 with free accessibility and operates under the “Take One, Leave One” theory. Local officials and community members attended the dedication ceremony, where they spoke about the importance of literacy and encouraged students to pursue their dreams. This is the third LFL established in Austell this year as part of the Collaborative's goal to establish LFLs throughout Cobb County. About 99% of educators in Cobb County schools plan to return for the upcoming school year, an increase from last year's 98%. This high retention rate is attributed to Cobb's reputation as one of the top places to work in Georgia and the nation. Nearly 1,500 professionals attended Cobb's recent job fair at Truist Park, coming from as far away as California. Cobb Schools has also partnered with the University of West Georgia to offer advanced degrees to educators at no cost through Georgia's BEST, with about 4,000 expressing interest. Cobb Schools is hosting another job fair on June 8, primarily focused on filling classified support positions but with teaching positions also available. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. David Williamson is our most prolific playwright. His frank and revealing memoir was published last year to mark his five decades as a writer for stage and screen. David had it pretty good. He was working in a great university. His students loved him. His peers loved him. He had plenty of friends who loved him. And then he became a successful playwright. Life couldn't get any better! Except reaching the dizzying heights David reached in the theatre world didn't come cheap. For most of his life, he was like anyone else. You might have the occasional tiff with a co-worker or acquaintance, but generally, you're well-liked by the people you care about. And all of a sudden, hordes of strangers started to hate David Williamson. Already a self-conscious man, the idea of people making a living by tearing apart his every thought was almost debilitating for David. On this episode David & Crissy share the story of how Titan Solar Power was born in 2013 out of necessity to solve some major problems in the industry. David came into this venture with 20+ years of sales experience leading up to him being in an in home solar sales manager, which is where he first was introduced to the solar industry. Nearly 10 years ago the residential solar industry was very different than it is today. Just like at the beginnings of any new industry scaling in ways never before seen, volume exposed problems that needed clear and immediate solutions. It was at this point that Titan was launched and the vision began to came to fruition. As you will hear they learned quite a bit along the way and are still learning and receiving feedback on a daily basis. When Crissy joined the team she filled a vital role from the very beginning. Crissy handled and scaled process after process learning everything she could about the business to make sure that the internal side could support all of the sales growth that was happening from sales dealers that started to flock in from all over the country. The dynamic between the two of them will keep you laughing and engaged throughout the entire episode. It was a pleasure to get to meet you both and learn a bit more about the Titan story! When I was in my early twenties, I won an award for a scriptwriting competition run by the Fellowship of Australian Writers, and involved in that process was one of my favourite playwrights - David Williamson. I wrote David a fan letter, and to my great surprise, he replied! That was my first taste of how deeply David respects his audience, and our interview was no different. As the most produced playwright in Australian Theatre's history, David is extremely productive. Part of this, he says, is just plain old love of the game. Since the very first time he heard actors saying his words out loud, he was completely hooked. And as a professional playwright, the structure of the theatre industry has contributed to his prolific output: when the production company lists your next play in their program, your fate is sealed, and there's no time to fall prey to writer's block. David shares his writing process, from the initial idea all the way through to rehearsals with the cast, as well as how he stays positive in the face of criticism, and why his writer wife Kristin's role as his first reader is so valuable to his work. In March 2013, David Williamson and business partner, Kyle Beddome purchased PM&M Electrical Inc. and began operating as Titan Solar Power. Together, they handled all aspects of the company from sales to installations. They found success after they discovered a niche in the solar industry by eliminating solar sales from their operations and focusing on installations and the project management associated with it. As Titan evolved, Williamson and Beddome, were able to step back and take on the executive leadership roles of Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer. Today, Titan has installed over 449,241,146 watts of solar and completed over 90,000 projects with 1,400 employees nationwide. Titan and its affiliate locations remain closely held corporations with Williamson and Beddome at the helm. Please give us a review on Apple Podcasts! Like & Subscribe!
