For this Out Takes, we reviewed a new Aussie musical that brings, the latest television show from Dan Levy and two of the local films on offer for ACMI Drag Week plus an interview for you with one of Australia's favourite comic actresses and a global movie star. First up was ‘The Deb’, an original musical comedy about two teenage cousins who dig deep to find self-acceptance and a date to the Debutante Ball in a small country town in Australia. We thoroughly enjoyed this truly Aussie and wildly original movie musical that is also Rebel Wilson’s hotly anticipated directorial debut so who better to tell us about it than the star herself. Alaisdair caught up with Rebel online where they discussed why she wanted to tell this story, her musical inspirations, the importance of queer representation in this film and more. Next was ‘Big Mistakes’, the latest project from Dan Levy which is streaming now on Netflix. Described as a bold, new comedic family saga within a high-stakes crime thriller. Big Mistakes follows Nicky (played by Dan Levy) and Morgan (played by Taylor Ortega), two deeply incapable siblings who are in over their heads when a misguided theft for their dying grandmother accidentally pulls them into the world of organized crime. Blackmailed into increasingly dangerous assignments, they clumsily fail upwards, sinking deeper into chaos they're ill-equipped to handle. This one divided the OT team but it’s fair to say if you’re needing a Dan Levy fix then this should satisfy your cravings. We finished up with reviews of two local films featured in ACMI Drag Week which is a week long celebration of queer films that highlight the wonderfully diverse world of drag from April 17 – 23. The first film is the rarely screened 1984 camp short film ‘XOS A Cry for Help’ about two sisters (both played by Doug Lucas) fighting over their recently departed grandmother’s final wishes. This was followed by our review of ‘Victorian Queens’ which explores Melbourne’s unique drag community through four very intimate and distinct portraits of four drag artists and showcases their progressive leadership through artistic expression while they push for cultural change and inclusion. For this Out Takes, we put the spotlight on Drag Week which is coming to ACMI this April which allows you to experience a super-sized week of films that walked so Drag Race could run … in heels! Our special guest was Spiro Economopoulos who has recently joined the team at ACMI to help bring great cinema to the masses in Melbourne and he's kicking it off with a week long celebration of queer films that highlight the wonderfully diverse world of drag. From April 17 – 23, ACMI will screen twelve films about the art and artists of drag who blazed a trail in this irreverent, outrageous and unapologetic performance style. Spiro helps to break it all down for us including the special screening of ‘The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ as you’ve never seen it before, performed with a live shadow cast of local drag queens Lazy Susan, Zelda Moon, Pashion Couture and Art Simone plus a special live JOY 94.9 outside broadcast from ACMI featuring the Out Takes team from 6 – 7pm before the screening kicks off at 7.30pm – see you there! In this episode of Talking Architecture & Design, we're joined by Katrina Sedgwick, the inaugural Director and CEO of the Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation (MAP Co), who is leading one of Australia's most ambitious cultural transformations – a $1.7 billion revitalisation connecting Federation Square through to Southbank.Sedgwick shares what it's like to build a new organisation while simultaneously delivering a project of national significance. Establishing MAP Co's culture, partnerships, and long-term vision has gone hand in hand with reshaping one of Melbourne's most important civic and artistic precincts. The redevelopment is deeply informed by the precinct's rich history and layered cultural identity. Rather than starting from scratch, the transformation celebrates heritage, architecture, and Melbourne's long-standing creative community, ensuring the precinct remains both respectful of its past and responsive to the future. At the heart of the project is Laak Boorndap, a new public garden designed as a place for gathering, reflection, and cultural expression. More than just a green space, it brings together nature, performance, and Indigenous storytelling to create a welcoming and meaningful environment for the city.Climate resilience is also central to the design, with landscaping, shade, and water-sensitive strategies helping prepare the precinct for Melbourne's changing conditions. First Peoples principles guide planting, artistic collaborations, and the ongoing care for Country, ensuring Indigenous knowledge and culture are embedded throughout the space.Drawing on her leadership experience at major cultural institutions such as ACMI and the Adelaide Film Festival, Sedgwick brings a collaborative and community-focused approach to this complex project. Balancing the needs of artists, organisations, visitors, and the wider public is key to creating a precinct that truly belongs to everyone. With Federation Square now under MAP Co's stewardship, the vision is for a connected cultural corridor where art, public life, and civic space come together. From major events to everyday moments of connection, the precinct is being shaped to inspire creativity and community for generations to come.
Today, Ceri speaks the extraordinary Memo Akten — artist, researcher, computer scientist. For more than a decade, he has worked with emerging technologies, AI, Big Data, and our Collective Consciousness as scraped and shaped by the internet, to explore consciousness, perception, ecology and the politics of our techno-lifestyles. He won the Golden Nica at Prix Ars Electronica, became Google's first artist-in-residence in their Artists & Machine Intelligence programme, and has exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Tribeca, the Barbican, ACMI, Mori Art Museum, and the Academy Museum in LA. His collaborations span U2, Lenny Kravitz, Depeche Mode, Max Cooper, Richard Dawkins, Google, Apple and McLaren. KEY TAKEAWAYS Technology is never neutral. It shapes us as much as we shape it. Memo reminds us that behind every dataset is a culture, behind every model is a worldview, and behind every technological leap is a chain of ecological, political and emotional consequences. The world can only meet your ideas if you let them out of hiding. Memo's story is a masterclass in releasing the work before you feel ready. If you are wrestling your way through a project remember - the destination is just the documentary still. Gathering the threads that eventually become something whole is where the real art is. BEST MOMENTS “We can use technology to understand ourselves more deeply, to pay attention to the world more carefully, and to ask bigger, braver questions.” “I very rarely begin a project with an end goal of this is what it should look like, in mind. I usually begin with this is how I want it to behave.” AN UNMISSABLE OFFER If the art world feels confusing, you're not imagining it. Most artists are guessing their way through it and staying stuck far longer than they need to. Inside the Ceri Hand Coaching Membership, you get straight answers and real support. Monster isn't at the top of any anime lists. Whether this is due to its unconventional storytelling or darker cerebral tone , it's these very same elements that set Monster apart from more popular anime as a rare masterpiece that doesn't get enough attention. A mature crime thriller from one of the best mangaka's of all time (Naoki Urasawa), Monster offers great storytelling in a grounded setting. This makes it a different kind of gateway anime, appealing to fans of true crime and thriller stories who may otherwise never give anime a shot. Despite being renowned as a masterpiece, Monster is often overlooked by anime fans. Returning guest Gerald Lillywhite is one of them, who joins the discussion fresh after finishing the series to offer his perspective as a writer.
Eloise Ross jumped into the host seat this week to interview Australia's unofficial Merle Oberon expert, Rohan Spong. In light of the recent book, Love, Queenie: Merle Oberon, Hollywood's First South Asian Star and a new creative project Rohan is working on, they discuss Oberon's contribution to Hollywood. She was the first person of South Asian decent to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, though she spent her life pretending to be born in Australia and her heritage was only made public after her death.Thomas Caldwell also joined the show to discuss misanthropic critic of contemporary culture, Michael Haneke. The Austrian filmmaker's body of work is deceptively humanistic and will be celebrated in upcoming seasons from both the Melbourne Cinémathèque and ACMI, starting Wednesday 16 April and Thursday 17 April respectively. They review Tim Mielants's Small Things Like These, based on Claire Keegan's Booker Prize nominated novel. With her debut feature documentary film Queens of Concrete, Eliza Cox takes audiences on a seven year journey with three skateboarders: Ava Godfrey, Charlotte Heath, and Hayley Wilson. They each embrace a different style of skateboarding, with street and park being the two styles that are featured at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. It's that 2020 Olympics that the girls have their sights set on, with Eliza following their journey from the skateparks of Melbourne to the sponsored events in London and LA, to boarding schools dedicated to bringing up the next generation of skaters. There's an inherent drama to skateboarding - you never know if the skater is going to fall, what they're going to pull off, and how they're going to take a risky jump - and that's paired well with the inherent drama of being a teenager turning into an adult. Or, in the case of Charlotte, a kid turning into a teenager. Each of the girls has their own life journey to follow, and Eliza's dedicated observational lens follows them in a caring and considered manner. This is not a director simply documenting the lives of their subjects, but supporting their journey in an empathetic manner.Queens of Concrete moves in the same vein as the great skating docos of the turn of the millennium, with Eliza noting the impact that Dogtown and Z-Boys had on her work. As a viewer, I couldn't help but feel the pull of Eddie Martin's excellent All This Mayhem, a film which also hails from the streets of Melbourne. Either way, the impact of sports documentaries is a strong one on Eliza's creative vision.I caught up with Eliza ahead of the AIDC panel Levelling the Playing Field: Celebrating Trailblazers in Sports Docs, where she joins fellow documentarians Frances Elliott, who co-directed Renee Gracie: Fireproof, and Marlee Silva, of the upcoming film Skin in the Game. In the following interview, we talk about her journey into filmmaking, what it means to be a supportive director, the choice behind making a sports film about girls or a film about girls who skate, and a lot more.If you're in Naarm-Melbourne this weekend, then make yourself known and head along to ACMI on Monday 3 March where you can catch Levelling the Playing Field, alongside a stack more great panels and events at the Australian International Documentary Conference. Ceri explores the future of cultural spaces with Seb Chan, the director & CEO of ACMI, where he is redefining how museums connect with their audiences. Seb talks about his evolution from experimental music producer to museum innovator and reveals how his background in creating immersive musical experiences has shaped his approach to museum design. Seb’s unique experiences and professional knowledge give a unique perspective on how museums can shape the future. KEY TAKEAWAYS Drawing from his experimental music background, Seb discovered that museums should move beyond traditional education to spark curiosity. His experience in underground music scenes taught him how to create environments where people feel empowered to explore the unfamiliar. Going from tech consultant to museum CEO, Seb developed a future focused philosophy. He now insists cultural institutions must be designed for the future, considering not just technology but also the skills future generations will need. Leading multiple international institutions taught Seb the importance of acknowledging diverse cultural contexts. His experiences across New Zealand, Australia, and America shaped his understanding of how museums can create inclusive spaces that transcend shared assumptions. Physical tools can enhance digital experiences. Seb’s work with these technologies revealed solutions for maintaining visitor focus in our distraction prone lives. Through years of visitor research and practical application, Seb developed strategic principles for creating memorable museum experiences. His approach integrates multisensory engagement with thoughtful space utilisation. Witnessing the erosion of societal trust, Seb recognises why cultural institutions are vital spaces for rebuilding connections. His leadership philosophy emphasises fostering genuine dialogue and understanding across communities. Despite facing resource constraints and pandemic exhaustion, Seb maintains his commitment to experimentation; continuous innovation is crucial for addressing complex societal challenges. Based on his transformative work at ACMI, Seb changed how they measure success. He shifted focus from traditional visitor counts to deeper engagement indicators, fundamentally changing how museums evaluate their impact. BEST MOMENTS "For me, music has a particular ability to transcend cultures and time and space too, it gives you a different sense of time. Going to a gig or going out to an event, that sort of sense of time shifts and time stretches and makes me think about things in other ways." "In the world we live in, where all our social relations and communities are run through media, museums have a vital role in helping people make sense of that complexity." "You can design spaces to change behaviour and to change people's openness and when you design them well, they work. I know a lot of artists are sort of thinking about this sort of stuff too." "Niche interests and the platforms that media is distributed on, and the way those platforms monetise attention as well is based on fragmentation and driving difference amongst that. And that can be very interesting and positive and also politically, it can be very destructive as well as we're seeing play out in various parts of the world." "Focus is hard now. I think people find there's lots of things vying for their focus. But again, using those design principles, I think you can design for focus." "We need to find ways to disagree about things... there was an ability to disagree without it becoming, your house getting swatted." "It's very easy to get someone interested in music that they didn't think they liked and it's probably the easiest art form to get someone interested in because it's so multisensory." "People are interested in lots and lots of different things and they're very up for things they're not familiar with if you don't make them feel like idiots." It was recently screened at the Melbourne-based Australian Center for Moving Images (ACMI). Childhood trauma, addiction, poverty, homophobia, religious extremism and disability are just some of the hard-hitting themes in filmmaker Adam Elliot's new dark and humorous film "Memoir of a Snail". The Oscar winner speaks to Eve Jackson about this whimsical and tear-jerking Australian stop-motion film about separated twins, which won the Cristal award for best feature at Annecy, the world's top animation festival. Adam is also sharing his creative process in an exhibition in Melbourne, Australia at ACMI.

Some people take a lifetime to find their true north, the thing they want to spend their days working on. That's not the case for Sean Perkins. Growing up in South Yorkshire in the 70s, it wasn't cool to get good grades. Even though he was smart, he flunked almost everything. Everything, but art. From a young age he was exposed to, “the future, all this incredible visual culture”, by way of Japanese mementos his dad would bring back from work trips to Tokyo. And the fashion his mum would wear after disappearing to the fashion shows in Paris to stock her boutique in Huddersfield. Today, he's one of the most influential graphic designers of our time. He's created visual identities for some of the world's most recognisable brands with his London-based studio North Design. And the brands and clients relationships he builds — they stand the test of time. Some of his identity systems are still being used 20+ years after he and his partners Jeremy Coysten and Stephen Gilmore first created them. Think Tate Modern, Barbican Centre, West Kowloon Cultural District, ACMI. And perhaps most notably, the project that put his name on the map as a young designer, the UK's most iconic roadside assistance company, the RAC. Listen in as Vince and Sean discuss, growing up buying albums for the covers, learning from Gert Dumbar, and the highs and lows of running their respective studios. Welcome to Season 4, Episode 6. Father Jun is one of our favorite characters on Warrior… so we were so unbelievably excited to have a conversation with Perry Yung! With about 30 acting credits to his name for TV and Film, Perry has also worked on stage and in music. We also love how he merges his activism and beliefs into his acting and music. In this conversation, we talk a little about his love of music, the shakuhachi flute, the SLANT Performance group that he co-founded, his journey as an actor, the special experience on Warrior, his directorial debut with the Stop Asian Hate! Love One Another short film, Grace Lee Boggs (we did an episode on her for S01E04), creative agency, and so much more. Warrior was not renewed by Max (Boo!), but the first three seasons will be released on Netflix on February 16th (Yay!). To get a season 4, it's essential for Netflix to understand what Warrior means to the Asian American community and the world of diverse stories. Supporting Warrior supports stories for all underrepresented groups. So if you have Netflix, please support them on February 16th and beyond! And If you don't have Netflix… maybe you should get it just to watch Warrior. We begin this episode by talking about the Asian Classical Music Initiative (ACMI), and the upcoming 2024 ACMI @ MSMU International Conference. It's going to be held on April 13th and April 14th, 2024 at Mount Saint Mary's University in Los Angeles, and it's open to the public. Please check out ACMI and their upcoming conference. If you're a performer, composer, or scholar, you can apply to present… or you could just attend and learn. For more info, go to www.kuacmi.com/2024-conference-call. And if you want to see more of Perry Yung, visit his acting site, his Yung Flutes site, follow him on Instagram @perryyungofficial, follow his band Judo Club, and look out for the short film Stop Asian Hate! Love One Another at the DisOrient Asian American Film Festival in Eugene, Oregon Live March 8-10 and Virtual March 11-17 (and hopefully many other places). When Cleopatra and Antony stood side by side they were at the pinnacle of power. Together they fought against Octavian and would bring about the end of the republic, and the start of a new age for Rome. Recorded live at ACMI studios in Melbourne on 4th October, 2022. Guest: Dr Rhiannon Evans (Associate Professor in Classics and Ancient History at La Trobe University).
