Julie Metzger has been teaching families about puberty for over 30 years. Her book, “Will Puberty Last My Whole Life?” and her course, Great Conversations, are amazing resources to help teens and families recognize and navigate the important transition to adulthood. In conversation, Julie and I draw parallels between puberty and death. Both are sacred experiences and periods of great transformation for our bodies and communities. We dig into the use of ritual, the importance of language when it comes to talking about the sacred, and a really fascinating thought exercise about what it means to be an adult. It's hard to talk about, hard to admit, and embarrassing to acknowledge that sex can... how do I say it... SUCK after you have a baby? You don't want to, you're exhausted, perhaps it's painful, or you simply find it awkward and the furthest thing from sexy. That's why I am introducing you to my dear friend and Women's Health Physical Therapist, Carrie Koziol. Carrie is one of the most honest moms and friends I know. She is the PERFECT person to talk about this subject not only because of her incredible knowledge but because she will make you feel SO comfortable with what you're going through and why. And what to do. NEWS FLASH, you're not alone. Today we are talking about the reasons why you don't want to have sex and you're not enjoying it. Carrie also has solutions and new ways to get out of this funk and into a healthier relationship with sex. And yourself! Carrie doesn't hold back and is super vibrant, bold and raw about our sexual vibrancy at any stage of life. You don't have to be dry as a desert, roll your eyes when your partner touches you, or get trapped by the #1 boner killer anymore (Carrie shares it in this episode!) Listen, learn, be inspired, have a few giggles, get comfortable and confident in the bedroom. Thank you for listening, sharing, and I hope you enjoy this episode. I know I needed it! Julie Metzger joins us today to discuss how to create a family environment that thrives on open communication and why you shouldn't hide difficult conversations in the dark. Julie is the co-founder of Great Conversations, a company that focusses on delivering classes and presentations (both in-person and virtual) on topics such as puberty, sexuality, parenting and adolescence. Tune in to hear Julie discuss why you need to work on your own problems before helping others, because “there's no chance to heal a relationship with a child, until the parent has worked on their own stuff.” You'll hear how open conversations with her parents influenced her teachings, and why we shouldn't be scared about having difficult conversations around the dinner table, even those that address the below the belt body parts. Here's a glance at what you'll learn from Julie in this episode: Why certain topics, such as sex, are put in the dark whilst being the most important topics to discuss with your children. How Julie is helping families to communicate with each other on challenging things Discussing reproductive organs over dinner: The influence that Julie's parents had on her profession today, her Dad being a urologist and her Mum being a nurse. What mathematically makes a great marriage and why children just want to be heard and seen. Why there's no chance to heal a relationship with a child until the dad has worked on his own stuff. I'm honored to be joined on this episode by Julie Metzger, founder of Great Conversations (https://www.greatconversations.com/ & https://www.facebook.com/GreatConversations). Her organization helps both parents and kids understand what puberty will look like and face it head on armed with information and a sense of humor. She's been doing these talks for over 30 years around Seattle and the Bay Area and was kind enough to give me some time to pick her brain. What I expected to be a talk about the physical aspects of puberty turned into something far richer: a discussion about emotions, empathy, modeling strong and loving relationships and how you sometimes just have to shut up and let your kid talk. I won't spoil any more of this but I will say that I personally learned far more in this episode than I could have ever anticipated and I guarantee you'll learn something too.
