See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

GREEN ROOM (2015) Director: Jeremy Saulnier Cast: Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Alia Shawkat, Patrick StewartA punk band walks into a Nazi bar. No, that's not the setup for a joke — it's the setup for one of the most suffocating, nerve-shredding thrillers of the last decade. This week on Dewey Pod Monster, Sean and John dig deep into Jeremy Saulnier's 2015 siege film Green Room, where a broke touring punk band witnesses a murder backstage and suddenly finds itself trapped in a standoff with a very organized, very murderous gang of neo-Nazi skinheads. Spoiler: the dogs are not friendly. In this episode, we discuss:Captain Picard's Cold-Blooded Era — Patrick Stewart plays Darcy, the calculating Nazi ringleader, with such chilling charisma that both hosts can't stop talking about it. He's warm, persuasive, and absolutely terrifying — and apparently has been acting since the 1760s, so he's had time to practice.Would a Real Punk Band Actually Do This? — John goes full music nerd and calls out the movie's two biggest logical leaps: why any self-respecting anti-Nazi punk band would knowingly play a neo-Nazi club, and how they survived long enough to open with Nazi Punks Fuck Off without getting murdered on stage. Sean defends the film. John is unconvinced. The Art of Doing More With Less — Shot on a $5 million budget with basically three sets, Green Room delivers a masterclass in compressed, claustrophobic tension. The hosts debate whether it's a horror film, a thriller, or just a really unpleasant Tuesday night — and explore how Saulnier's visual style echoes David Fincher's color palette and controlled camera work.One-Handed Shotgun Detour — The conversation takes a brief detour to John's other watch this week, The Rip (Netflix), starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in a cop drama that almost holds together — right up until Affleck fires a shotgun with one hand out a moving SUV window. John has thoughts. We Also Talked About:Long Shot (1981) (Internet Archive) — A Leif Garrett teen heartthrob vehicle about a high school soccer star who plans to fund his European football dreams by winning a foosball tournament. It is exactly as good as that sounds.Long Gone (1987) (Youtube) — An HBO baseball film set in 1957 following the fictional Tampico Stogies minor league team, starring William Petersen and Dermot Mulroney. A discovered gem to some; "it was fine" to Sean. The Lowdown (2025) (Amazon) — An FX series starring Ethan Hawke as a truth-chasing freelance journalist in Tulsa investigating what may or may not be a murder. Coen Brothers vibes, from the director of Reservation Dogs. Sean's wife kept interrupting him.Disco Lunch by The Boy Detective (Youtube) — A southeastern Michigan ska-horror-punk album that John is furious he didn't listen to sooner. Available on streaming and in vinyl variants at Pinkerton Records.Unlocked (Netflix) — A real-jail social experiment show where prisoners are allowed to semi-govern themselves. John watched Season 2 and found himself unable to sympathize with a single person in it.Blue Ruin (2013) — Saulnier's previous film and the first entry in his loose "revenge trilogy." Essential viewing if Green Room is your entry point.Rebel Ridge (2024) — The unofficial third film in Saulnier's spiritual trilogy. Mentioned as context for why Sean has been tracking this director for years.New episodes of the Dewey Pod Monster podcast drop every week. We're proud members of the YouRun Podcast Network.

Up Yours!”. She went on to form Essential Logic, a post-punk band with duelling saxophones that released one album in 1979. 43 years later she released a second Essential Logic album together with a box set of her back catalogue. Essential Logic plays a post-punk mix of punk, jazz, reggae and funk. Her life took a detour in the ‘80s when she joined a Krishna community, became a mother, and dropped out of music for 25 years. Whatever stormed through the ‘90s and early 2000s with a relentless barrage of punk rock anthems fueled by disillusionment, isolation, and raw fury. Now, nearly 25 years later, original members Ben Wrecked (vocals/guitar)and Matt Fish (drums) are back, louder and sharper than ever, joined by Brett Moore (guitar) and Peter Woodward (bass/vocals) to resurrect one of the Midwest's most fierce punk acts. Their latest album, Into Darker Days, marks the band's first full-length release since 1997's Youngsters (DSR 69), delivering 12 new tracks that hit with the same melodic urgency and unapologetic edge fans have always loved. What does punk rock have to do with the heart of the Gospel? In this episode, the Voxology team, joined by the Dr. Timothy Gombis, dives deep into the unexpected intersections of radical community, inclusivity, and the teachings of Jesus. From punk rock's raw authenticity to the profound ministry of disability-focused communities that Mike recently experienced at the "Hope Heals" camp. The conversation explores how cruciformity—the self-giving love of Jesus—emerges in unlikely places. Along the way, they unpack the role of the church in society, faith and politics, and navigating cultural challenges with humility and curiosity. By reflecting on the ways marginalized voices reveal the Gospel's power, the team challenges traditional notions of faith and invites listeners to reimagine how justice, community, and theology come alive in everyday life. Whether discussing mutual ministry, the prophetic edge of punk culture, or stories of transformative love, this episode is a powerful reminder that the Gospel is both disruptive and healing. We encourage and would love for you to join this conversation. Share your thoughts on how faith intersects with culture and community on Facebook and Instagram, or email us your questions as we pursue deeper understanding together. We recently covered the topic of "all killer, no filler" albums, but what about the perfect single side of a record? If the physical time and space limitations of a vinyl LP or a cassette must exist, why not do something compelling? Is it all poppycock...or cockypop?!? You make the call! Our Third Lad for this exploration is frontman/saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist Dan Voznick, aka Alec Tension from underground '80s post-punk band Afterimage. Referred to in the Los Angeles Times as "LA's Joy Division" back in the day, Afterimage created a sound that was hypnotic, skittery and chilly, but is also adventurous, playful and complex. The original lineup of the band (Alec Tension, A Produce, Rich Evac and Holland DeNuzzio) only stayed together for a couple of years and released a scant discography of one single ("Strange Confession"/"The Long Walk") and an EP (Fade In), both in 1981. Those original recordings, plus a generous helping of unreleased demos and live tracks, are now available from Independent Project Records on the new retrospective compilation Faces to Hide. Out now on double LP (available in both black and opaque white), special edition CD and digital formats, Faces to Hide proves as scathing, urgent, taut, angular and gripping as Afterimage's scarce but unforgettable output must have sounded more than forty years ago. Packaged with extensive, career-spanning liner notes by noted journalist Richie Unterberger and previously unseen band photos, Faces to Hide also features Independent Project Records' signature hand letterpress-printed custom design for the vinyl and CD packaging.  Thanks to Josh Mills from It's Alive Media for the introduction and coordination! Mike also uncovers a rich musical heritage after meeting a cousin who fronts a Zydeco band in Louisiana, leading him to discover his extended family's significant contributions to various facets of the entertainment industry. Ray recounts his multifaceted career journey, involving roadie work, being a firefighter for 28 years, and later diving back into music and podcasting post-retirement. Personal anecdotes include Ray's memories of his first concert, seeing Chicago Transit Authority, and his best concert experience with ZZ Top, where he enjoyed backstage access and partied with the band. Mike fondly recalls his first concert, a Billy Squire show with Def Leppard as the opener, and his best concert experience, which was a transformative Buddy Guy performance that inspired him to become a musician. The episode concludes with Ray and Mike previewing their plans for upcoming podcast episodes and discussing the Illinois Rock and Roll Museum's ongoing development and various exhibits, including guitars from Buddy Guy, and its status as a non-profit organization reliant on donations and memberships for support.BANDS: 4 Non-Blondes, Alison Krauss, Billy Joel, Billy Squire, Buddy Guy, Cadillac Groove, Def Leppard, Flat Cats, Iron Maiden, Joker, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mabel's, Mike and the Still Masters, Outlaws, Rage Against A Machine, REO Speedwagon, REM, Robert Plant, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Train, Vulgar Boatmen, Wrought Iron Soul, ZZ Top.VENUES:  Alpine Valley, Chicago Theater, El Macomber, Illinois Rock and Roll Museum, Illinois Rock and Roll Museum on Route 66, International Amphitheater, Mabel's, Ravinia, Rialto Square Theater, Rosemount Horizon, Route 66, Taste of Westmont, The Amphitheater, The Flat Cats, The Forge, The Riviera Theater. The Nashville based punk band Winona Fighter is breathing new life into the resurgent punk scene, and on a mission to create punk music that is accessible and accepting to all music lovers willing to listen. Coco's (front-woman of Winona Fighter) introduction to the Boston punk rock scene at an early age was the catalyst influence for her current sound and stage presence. Moving to Nashville gave her a task to expose all music lovers to the power of thrashable tunes. After recruiting lead guitarist Dan Fuson, they set off to do the scene Coco had left behind justice. Eventually the two of them added Austin Luther (bass/producer) to the family. The band is recognized as an energized powerhouse during their live performances. Their shows are a space where all bullshit and ego is left at the door - everyone is welcome, equal and needs to get on their fucking feet. Their upcoming album 'My Apologies To The Chef' (Out February 14) promises to be one of rock's best albums of 2025. Check them out on tour starting February as well.
