Lashana Lynch has had a pretty incredible few years: she was the first ever Black female agent with a licence to kill in the James Bond franchise, played a ferocious warrior (and performed her own stunts) in The Woman King, became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and portrayed Mrs Honey in the movie adaptation of Matilda. Now she's back in a Sky adaptation of The Day of the Jackal, co-starring Eddie Redmayne. It's a long way from her working-class upbringing in Hammersmith, West London - a childhood she credits with teaching her resilience and grit…as well as the importance of dressing well. I loved chatting to Lashana - she's so smart and strong and interesting. We discuss grief, racism, people-pleasing and her failure to stop procrastinating about procrastination. Zero Says MISSION FAILURE and Wiz Says MISSION ACCOMPLISHED for No Time To Die Though the guys are split on recommending No Time To Die, they share very similar observations on the final film of the Daniel Craig era. As an ending to a series of films that started with Casino Royale, it just feels incredibly disappointing with how the series ended. Craig's Bond was a breath of fresh air for the nearly 60 year franchise...and yet, the arc ends with not only retrofitting Craig into the formula, but in a largely unsatisfying conclusion. And speaking of the conclusion, both Wiz and Zero were puzzled as to why Bond had to die at the end of the film. It didn't feel right that Bond had his full emotional evolution throughout the five films...only for him to bite the dust at the end of the film. On top of that, both the love interest (a returning Dr. Swann played by Lea Seydoux) and the villain (Rami Malek) are also flawed in critical ways. Dr. Swann feels like a wholly different character than what she was in Spectre and Safin just feels too goofy to be taken seriously as this brilliant villain. But man, does the action save this movie. Nearly every action scene is done well and are entertaining and exciting. This goes double for the scene set in Cuba which has some great scenes involving Ana de Armas and Lashana Lynch. And while Wiz feels like the action is just enough to recommend, Zero can't get past the disappointing elements of the film.

Very few artists are in the "please don't imitate" category. Bob Marley is one of those. Despite that, Kingsley Ben-Adir does the impossible... he's spectacular as Bob Marley. Not to be outdone, Lashana Lynch is award-worthy as Rita and BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE is clearly the first great film of 2024.

Considering that he was one of the most influential musical performers of the 2st Century pioneering an entire genre (reggae) of music, it was only a matter of time before we were to see a big budget studio of biopic of the late, great Robert Nesta Marley hailing from Nine Mile, Jamaica.  His life was tragically short but his music has lived on decades after his untimely passing in 1981.  This film directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (King Richard, We Own This City) focuses on a few critical years of his later life in the mid to late '70's which includes some big events in his life including an assassination attempt on him in 1976 and his eventual performance in important One Love peace concert in Jamaica in 1978.  Kingsley Ben-Adir (One Night In Miami, Barbie) stars as the titular musical legend and Lashana Lynch (No Time To Die, The Woman King) co-stars as his wife, Rita Marley. Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

[School of Movies 2023] This, folks, is arguably the greatest adaptation of one of Roald Dahl's books made to date. Taking everything that was great about the 1988 book (one of his last, only followed by Esio Trot, The Vicar of Nibbleswick and The Minpins) and one of the abiding favourites for many kids and previously-kids who aren't entirely sure if they have truly grown up yet. It's about a schoolgirl who develops telekinetic powers that she uses to banish a truly horrific headteacher. But that is merely the skeletal plot, there is so much there about being lonely, being neglected and abused and using your frustrations for something positive (making this the Anti-Carrie). And that was conducted in the beloved Mara Wilson and Danny DeVito film from 1996.  But in turning this thing into a successful West-End musical Tim Minchin added some truly memorable, frequently brilliant songs, a whole sub-plot about a story Matilda is weaving together, even more significance for the role of Miss Honey (played with astonishing fragility by Lashana Lynch). It's also a little less mean-spirited than a lot of Dahl's work, which makes it more suited to newer generations.  Alisha Weir absolutely kills it as Matilda, and Emma Thompson is unrecognisably foul as the monstrous Agatha Trunchbull. This film adaptation of the musical play adaptation is a Netflix-funded production, so should be possible to see right now. And with Wonka on the way from the director of Paddington, we hope this is the beginning of a 2020s Dahlaissance.
