New month, new genre. And this one KICKS BUTTS! Join Phillip and Michael as they dive headfirst into JUNE CLAUDE VAN DAMME with Bloodsport!Frank Dux: LIARBloodsport was released on February 26th, 1988 and kickstarted the burgeoning career of a young Jean Claude van Damme. During this time period, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were considered the reigning champs of action films. But as the 1980s continued into the 1990s, two action stars showed up to challenge Arnie and Sly: JCVD and Steven Seagal. These are two of the most controversial action stars. Some people would say Van Damme is the best. Sadly, some (including Michael) would say Seagal is the best. This month, we are all about JCVD. We're starting it all off with one of his most classic films. Bloodsport was based on the story of Frank Dux. Now, Frank Dux is a real person. His story of fighting in an underground tournament in the Kowloon Walled City? Probably (almost certainly) false! Either way, it's a classic. Check it out!And you can win a FREE month of bonus content and Watch Parties on our Patreon if you can answer this question: Who won the lawsuit between JCVD and Frank Dux? HIIIIeeeeYAHHHHH! It's the most wonderful time of the year from Claire and Ryan yet again as June Claude Van Damme rolls around for another session of roundhousing hilarity, and this time they've gone and delved right back into the archives for yet another of Ryans childhood favorites (but aren't they all? Or so he claims...) as the deadly duo ready their Iron Hands and Do tricks with bricks, watching 1988s based on a true story but definitely fabricated kicking tournament 'Bloodsport'. Then this is followed up swiftly and decisively with 1996s late to the party sequel 'Bloodsport 2: The Next Kumite' starring a vaguely familiar man with a vaguely familiar accent. Are foreign prisons the worst place to be in the entire world ever? How many montages does it really take to snuff candles out by sheer will alone? And what the damn hell is going on with race representation in this franchise!? Listen in, ready your kicks and sweep your sand on another episode of TALES FROM THE BARGAIN BIN! As the merry month of June Claude Van Damme comes to its concussive conclusion, Claire and Ryan take a look into the abyss that is the Universal Soldier franchise and come out the experience war-torn and packed in ice, as Roland Emmerich's 1992 kickstart movie and Unisol™ sequel Alumni John Hyams later effort 'Regeneration' are compared, contrasted and reconstituted into a nutritious paste for your direct consumption. Does all this technically fall under the category of Necromancy? Who actually commissioned this program? And are European Police Sirens the best Sirens in the world? Find out! This week! Van Damme does the ultimate splits playing twins in Double Impact. What better way to celebrate June Claude Van Damme by having not one, but two JCVDs. This 1991 action movie was a huge hit, even though it didn’t light a fire under critics, and is arguably the one that spin-kicked JC out of B-movies to top of the A-class. No Double Impact… means no Universal Soldier, Hard Target or Timecop. We take a deep dive into this enjoyable romp, with a diverted focus on well developed body parts. But why was the leading actress cast? Does Geoffrey Lewis manage to underplay his role? And are two JCVD’s simply too much? Join us on a junk ride in Hong Kong harbour to see whether two heads are better than one, or if they cause double trouble (and we don’t mean the film we covered a few episodes ago) What do you think?
