War is hell. Vive le revolution! Conflict is on the menu this week as Nick Langdon drops by to discuss The Battle of Algiers (1966), directed by Gillo Pontecorvo, and Battle of the Commandos (1969), directed by Umberto Lenzi. A legendary treatise on how to both wage a guerilla resistance and combat one, plus an object lesson in how NOT to conduct a commando mission - even if you are Jack Palance with a shonky Scottish accent! The Battle of Algiers has an unusual narrative structure which is not really spoilable and it's hard to imagine how we could spoil Battle of the Commandos more than it already is. So, we won't be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for either film this week. Want to get in touch? Julian, Madeline, and Emilio are graced by the enthusiastic presence of Tony-nominated actor Rob McClure to finish off their episode cycle on Oscar-Winning Supporting Performances with a "Close-Up" about three classic comedic roles, which each garnered their performers the coveted trophies. The first of these would be Kevin Kline's role in "A Fish Called Wanda" (1988), the British-American, Monty Python-adjacent caper where Kline plays the audaciously stubborn diamond thief Otto West. Next is that of Jack Palance in "City Slickers" (1991), the story of three New Yorkers on a cattle-herding vacation in the American West, in which Palance plays their rugged-yet-warm-hearted trail boss, Curly. And rounding out this trio is Marisa Tomei in "My Cousin Vinny," the courtroom dramedy where the titular Brooklyn lawyer is enlisted to represent his wrongfully-accused cousin and best friend in Alabama, depending on crucial contributions from his brash and mechanically-astute fiancée Mona Lisa Vito to work towards their exoneration. Though all of these films were released in nearby years, the group discusses why these performances stand the test of time, be it due to laugh-out-loud physical gags, the contrast between locals and fish-out-of-water, or the resonant truths at each role's foundation. Aided by Rob McClure's inimitable experience and expert insight about the "actually, actually" that defines a great comic performance, they trace the vast range of humor among these characters and the greater stories in which they appear, making notable stops along the way at unforgettable facial expressions, one-armed push-ups, and scathing instruction-manual retorts. Rob McClure has earned Tony nominations for his roles in the Broadway productions of Mrs. Doubtfire and Chaplin, and has also appeared in Something Rotten!, Mary Poppins, Hello Dolly, Beetlejuice, and many more productions On- and Off-Broadway. Billy Crystal was on a big hot streak in the late '80s and early '90s, topped by this comedy-western blockbuster. Ron Underwood directed City Slickers and did a terrific job balancing the laughs with all the mid-life crises of the 3 main characters. It's a comedy with some sting. What this film does best is connect with middle-aged men who are going through the things that Crystal, Bruno Kirby and Daniel Stern are. Jack Palance though plays a man who knows about that "one thing"...and he was the one who won an Oscar. Few buddy cop films from the '80s pack the wild, testosterone-fueled fun that Tango & Cash (1989) does. This action-comedy, starring Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell, has cemented its place as a cult classic. While it may not be the most refined piece of cinema, it's a wild ride from start to finish, showcasing all the hallmarks of the late '80s action genre – explosions, witty one-liners, and big hair.Plot BreakdownThe story is as over-the-top as you'd expect. Ray Tango (Stallone) and Gabriel Cash (Russell) are rival L.A. detectives from opposite sides of the cop spectrum. Tango is the slick, Armani-suited professional, while Cash is the wild, loose cannon with a mullet and a penchant for chaos. When they're framed for murder by a powerful crime lord (played by Jack Palance), they have to set aside their differences to clear their names and take down the real villains. The plot might be thin, but it is a perfect backdrop for Stallone and Russell to riff off each other. Their chemistry is undeniable, one of the film's biggest strengths. Watching these two action icons banter, bicker, and begrudgingly team up makes Tango & Cash so rewatchable.Characters & PerformancesStallone and Russell are both in their element here. Stallone plays it cool and collected, contrasting his usual rough-and-tumble action hero roles (Rambo, anyone?). It's fun to see him lean into a more polished character, still delivering killer action scenes but with a wink and a smirk.Kurt Russell, though, is the true scene-stealer. His portrayal of Cash, a wisecracking, reckless cop, perfectly balances charm and grit. Russell's timing is impeccable, and he injects a level of humour that keeps the film from taking itself too seriously. Add in the hilariously over-the-top villains, including a memorable turn from Palance, and you have a film that's never lacking in character dynamics.Action & CinematographyFor fans of Born to Watch who live for classic ‘80s action, this movie delivers. The action sequences are pure chaos—ranging from high-speed car chases to daring prison escapes and warehouse shootouts. It's a no-holds-barred spectacle of explosions, stunts, and gunfire, all shot with that frenetic, fast-paced style that made the era's action films iconic. The film's climax, featuring an armoured monster truck smashing through everything in sight, epitomises absurd action excess. And it's precisely what you want from a movie like this. Nothing is subtle or understated, and that's the point—Tango & Cash is about having as much fun as possible on screen.Cultural ImpactWhile Tango & Cash didn't exactly set the box office on fire or win over critics when it was first released, it's become a cult favourite. Fans of Stallone and Russell often cite this film as a guilty pleasure, and it's easy to see why. It's pure escapism, a film that doesn't pretend to be anything other than an entertaining popcorn flick. It's also a time capsule of late '80s action cinema, blending buddy cop antics with outrageous stunts, macho bravado, and that irreverent sense of humour that feels like a precursor to films like Bad Boys and Rush Hour.In the larger action landscape, Tango & Cash doesn't get mentioned as much as classics like Die Hard or Lethal Weapon, but it's worth watching for its sheer entertainment value. Plus, it's always a treat to see two major stars like Stallone and Russell flexing their comedic muscles while still delivering all the action their fans crave.Final ThoughtsFor Born to Watch listeners, if you're in the mood for a movie that embodies everything wild and wonderful about late '80s action, Tango & Cash is an absolute must-see. It's cheesy, loud, and over-the-top, but it knows precisely what it's doing. The dynamic between Stallone and Russell is worth the price of admission alone, and the film's explosive action scenes will leave you grinning. It's not high art, but it sure is high on entertainment.Whether you're revisiting it for nostalgia or checking it out for the first time, Tango & Cash is a perfect example of why we love ‘80s action cinema—it's all about the fun. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast. Are you ready for some recommendations? This week, I am focusing on films that are perfect for anyone looking for some Dungeons & Dragons inspiration. I have got four fantastic picks: "Hawk the Slayer" (1980), "Dragonslayer" (1981), "The Sword and the Sorcerer" (1982), and "The Dungeonmaster" (1984).First up is "Hawk the Slayer." This 1980 fantasy film directed by Terry Marcel is a great watch for those who enjoy classic sword and sorcery adventures. The story follows Hawk, played by John Terry, on his quest to defeat the evil Voltan, portrayed by Jack Palance. The film stands out for its creative use of special effects, particularly for its time. It's a cult favorite and a prime example of low-budget fantasy done right. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support our work.Next, we have "Dragonslayer" from 1981. Directed by Matthew Robbins, this movie features groundbreaking special effects that earned it an Academy Award nomination. The story revolves around a young sorcerer's apprentice, played by Peter MacNicol, who sets out to slay a dragon. The dragon, Vermithrax Pejorative, remains one of the most impressive and realistic dragons ever put to film. The combination of practical effects and CGI was ahead of its time, and it's one of my favorite fantasy movies."The Sword and the Sorcerer," released in 1982 and directed by Albert Pyun, is another gem. Lee Horsley stars as Talon, a mercenary with an AMAZING three-bladed sword on a mission to rescue a princess and reclaim his kingdom. This film has some action-packed sequences and impressive low-budget practical effects. Lastly, we have "The Dungeonmaster" from 1984. Directed by several directors, including Charles Band and Dave Allen, this anthology-style film follows Paul, a computer programmer who must face various challenges set by the evil Mestema, played by Richard Moll. The film's blend of fantasy and sci-fi elements makes it unique. Each segment of Paul's journey showcases different styles and imaginative scenarios that keeps it fresh. These four films offer a great mix of fantasy adventure, imaginative storytelling, and unique special effects. They're perfect for anyone looking to get inspired for their next Dungeons & Dragons campaign. So, grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy these classic fantasy films. Then go roll some dice.Subscribe to the Video Store Podcast* The Video Store Podcast* Apple Podcast* RSS This is a public episode. #115 - "Tango & Cash" (1989) with JB Huffman

80's Flick Flashback

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 16, 2024 59:38

An 80s flick synonymous with perhaps the most popular action genre of the eighties: the buddy-cop movie. In the wake of Lethal Weapon, there were many variations of the formula. Perhaps the most testosterone-fuelled was this 1989 cult classic that paired Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell as Los Angeles cops framed by Jack Palance's evil drug lord. With generous helpings of style, odd-couple quips, and tons of action, the movie was a box office hit. But behind the scenes, it was a mess, with the producers going through (at least) two directors and two cinematographers with a fast-approaching release date and pressure from the studio. So check your stock portfolios, brush up on your English lessons, and keep the mice out of the maze as Tim Williams and guest co-host, JB Huffman from "Manly Movies" Podcast discuss “Tango & Cash” from 1989 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: When Tango and Cash escape from prison, Cash turns to Tango and asks if he stopped "for coffee and a Danish." Tango responds, "I hate Danish," an in-joke referencing Sylvester Stallone's recent divorce from Danish actress Brigitte Nielson. At the quarry scene towards the end, one of the monster trucks is the famous Bigfoot truck. Although it's painted in different colors than its trademark blue and does not feature any Bigfoot decals, it was confirmed by Bob Chandler, the owner of the original monster truck, that it is indeed Bigfoot. The Milwaukee-based film critic and programmer Chris Cassingham joins the show this week to discuss the great director George Stevens and his 1953 masterpiece Shane, starring Alan Ladd and Jack Palance, about a mysterious gunfighter who finds work with a homestead family in the open range of lawless Wyoming and is drawn into the community's conflict against a gang of violent cattleranchers who are trying to take over the territory. George Stevens' life was transformed by his service in World War II as part of the military's Special Motion Picture Coverage Unit, bearing witness to D-Day and the liberation of the Nazi death camps, and he returned to Hollywood to become one of the great American dramatic filmmakers with his unofficial fifties trilogy of A Place in the Sun, Giant, and this immortal western that serves both as a classic example of the genre and as a revisionist “psychological western” that questioned heroism, masculinity, the family unit and most importantly, the horror and the toll of gun violence on American life, a work that pushed cinema in the fifties forward towards the modern age, and is cited by some of today's great directors as a key influence. Plus: on the eve of the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, a discussion of what was once billed as Hugh Jackman's final performance as the character in 2017's Logan, a film that pays explicit (and in our opinion unearned) tribute to Shane. Jean-Luc Godard was prolific after he went from reviewing films to making them in the early '60s. He directed a few classics of the French New Wave, many of which are beloved by Sight & Sound voters. In Contempt, bombshell Brigitte Bardot is impossibly beautiful, but she's also quite good at playing passive-aggressive anger. She and the dreamy Italian locations are a treat for the eyes, as her nightmarish scenario finds her being pimped out by her writer husband (Michel Piccoli) to a sleazy American producer (Jack Palance). On this week's show, the Summer of Sly continues with a look at 1989's Tango and Cash starring Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Terri Hatcher, and Jack Palance. This action-packed, buddy cop comedy contains nearly every trope of the 80s box office blockbuster: high speed chases, explosions, fisticuffs, damsel in distress, heroes who don't play by the rules, shadowy big bad, nudity, and more. Plus, a look at who else was up for one of the leads in this movie, and just how different (yet equally entertaining) it could've been.  If you like what you hear, please subscribe. Enjoy!
