Our Hard to Kill 1990 Review kicks off with a simple truth: the late 80s and early 90s were the golden age of action heroes. Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Willis ruled the world… and then along came a man with a ponytail, a whisper voice and an absolute obsession with breaking forearms. This week Whitey, Dan and Will the Worky step back into the dojo to tackle Steven Seagal's second ever film, Hard to Kill (1990). A movie that, at the time, felt like the arrival of the next unstoppable action icon… and now feels like a fever dream involving aikido, silk shirts and extremely uncomfortable sex scenes.Seagal plays Mason Storm, a cop who uncovers political corruption and is immediately shot, along with his wife, in what might be the least secure safe house ever filmed. Storm survives after being pumped full of shotgun pellets and spending seven years in a coma. Yes, seven years. And apparently, all it takes to recover is a massage, a training montage and a nurse who instantly falls in love with him. From there, the movie becomes a revenge story, but also, somehow, a romance, a conspiracy thriller, a martial arts film, and a weird Seagal self-fantasy all rolled into one.The boys dive deep into: • The unbelievable hospital security • The most aggressive love scene ever filmed • Mason Storm's questionable medical recovery • The ponytail era of action cinema • And why nobody recognises the villain's voice despite him repeating the same catchphrase constantly There are discussions about video store culture, the 1990 action boom, and how Seagal briefly convinced the world he belonged alongside the legends. But time has not been kind to Hard to Kill. Watching it today reveals something different. Schwarzenegger knew he was in on the joke. Bruce Willis had charm. Seagal genuinely believes he is the most dangerous man alive… and that may be the biggest reason this film is unintentionally hilarious.Still, there are broken bones, exploding pool cues, corrupt cops and more arm snapping than a chiropractor convention. And honestly… that's why we kind of love talking about it.JOIN THE CONVERSATION Is Seagal the strangest action star of all time? Does Hard to Kill accidentally become a comedy? And is this the most confident bad movie ever made?Leave a review, share the episode and send it to a mate who still thinks Seagal could win a real fight.#BornToWatch #HardToKill #StevenSeagal #90sAction #ActionMovies #MoviePodcast #CultMovies #BadMoviesGoodTimes #VideoStoreEra #FilmReview
Welcome back to Not A Bomb! —the podcast where we resurrect cinema's most infamous box office disasters and ask the burning question: was it really that bad? We're celebrating five years of cinematic redemption. For the month of January, Not A Bomb asks a very important cinematic question: what happens when actors decide that being in front of the camera just isn't enough and take a shot at directing themselves? This week, Brad and Troy dive into the wild, weird world of one of cinema's most unique action heroes — Steven Seagal — and his 1994 directorial debut, On Deadly Ground. What happens when you blend Road House bar‑brawling energy, sprinkle in a little Dances with Wolves spiritualism, and top it off with the explosive absurdity of Commando? You get Seagal as a Native American eco‑warrior battling a cartoonishly evil oil company that's tearing up the Alaskan wilderness. And if that's not enough, Michael Caine shows up with the greasiest hair of his career, there's a bar scene that might belong in the Action Movie Hall of Fame, and Seagal delivers environmental monologues with the confidence that only Steven Seagal can deliver. Is it poorly written? Without question. Is Seagal a terrible director? Oh, absolutely. But does that stop On Deadly Ground from being a fascinating, ridiculous, and thoroughly entertaining action‑adventure? Not a chance.Strap in — this one's a blizzard of bad decisions, big explosions, and pure '90s action madness. On Deadly Ground is directed by Steven Seagal and stars Steven Seagal, Michael Cine, Joan, John C. McGinley, R. Lee Ermey, Shari Shattuck, Billy Bob Thornton, Richard Hamilton, Sven-Ole Thorsen, and Mike Starr.Want to help support the show? The only Steven Seagal movie we'll probably do, so let's have some fun with his most successful movie, UNDER SIEGE. Seagal is the Tommy Wiseau of 90s action, for the ironically good, and bad. But say what you will, the movie made its mark, and it features the OG Baywatch babe, Erika Eleniak. Next up we battle VIGO as we talk Ghostbusters II. Thanks for listening to our nostalgic movie podcast. Please tell your friends and as always, be kind, rewind, relax, and enjoy the show.

Having first talked about this way back at our first ever live show taping, we're getting our eyes on this one again in-studio over ten years later to ask the important questions like: How long did it take the costume department to craft Seagal's huge fur snowsuit? Has Michael Caine ever looked more disgusting in a film? How satisfying is that Sven-Ole Thorsen torture job? And why in the world did they make us wait 70 minutes before giving us some sweet, sweet Billy Bob Thornton? PLUS: The VHS Trailer Game Cameo appearance to beat them all! On Deadly Ground stars Steven Seagal, Joan Chen, John C. McGinley, R. Lee Ermey, Shari Shattuck, Billy Bob Thornton, Richard Hamilton, Mike Starr, Sven-Ole Thorsen, and Michael Caine as Michael Jennings; directed, sort of, by Steven Seagal. There are many things under siege in Under Siege 2: Dark Territory—the audience, Steven Seagal's credibility as a tough guy, his belt, and the statutory laws of wherever they filmed. None of those equate to an entertaining action movie, nor should they describe the sequel to a pretty solid film of the genre. Yes, this movie sucks. But, it did essentially end the silly notion that Seagal was anything more than the blowhard that he actually was. We can all thank it for that, at least. Now, sit back, chop open an Oatmeal Porter from Highland Brewing, and hack that Apple Newton! The Thunderous Wizard, Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are knife fighting terrorists on a runaway train! This week's VHS Strikes Back pick comes from Patreon supporter Timothy, and he's chosen Out for Justice from 1991. By this point, Steven Seagal had already punched and wrist-locked his way into Hollywood as the latest in a long line of action stars. Out for Justice was his fourth movie in just a few years, with Warner Bros. doubling down on his image as a ponytailed, tough-talking enforcer. Unlike the big, explosive blockbusters of Stallone or Schwarzenegger, Seagal's films leaned on a supposed “authentic” martial arts style — though whether that really translated to convincing screen action is up for debate. The film was directed by John Flynn, a respected filmmaker who had delivered solid crime thrillers like The Outfit and Best Seller. Flynn brought a gritty, street-level feel to the project, shooting largely on location in Brooklyn. Behind the scenes, however, reports suggest the production wasn't the easiest, with Seagal throwing his weight around and shaping both the story and the fight scenes to suit his ego. Despite mixed reviews, Out for Justice still turned a tidy profit at the box office — proof that in the early '90s, audiences were still willing to buy what Seagal was selling, even if the moves looked more like clumsy shoves than martial arts mastery. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot SummaryBrooklyn, 1991. The streets are mean, the accents are thick, and justice… wears a ponytail. Steven Seagal is Gino Felino, a cop with a badge, a bad attitude, and a fighting style that looks suspiciously like pushing people through windows. When crime takes over his neighborhood, one man will grunt, squint, and wrist-lock his way to vengeance. He's not fast, he's not flashy… but he's got a leather jacket, and apparently that's enough. Steven Seagal is… Out for Justice.Fun FactsOut for Justice was Steven Seagal's fourth starring role, following Above the Law (1988), Hard to Kill (1990), and Marked for Death (1990).The film was directed by John Flynn, who also made Lock Up (1989) with Sylvester Stallone.Seagal's character, Gino Felino, was originally written with a more serious tone, but many critics felt Seagal's wooden delivery undercut the drama. The movie was shot in Brooklyn, New York, and made heavy use of authentic neighborhood locations.William Forsythe plays the villain Richie, and he reportedly gained weight for the role to emphasize his character's sleaziness.Despite being marketed as a martial arts showcase, Seagal uses very little traditional martial arts in Out for Justice — relying instead on Aikido wrist locks and throws. The film's tagline was: “He's a cop. It's a dirty job… but somebody's got to take out the garbage.”Critics often describe Out for Justice as one of Seagal's “grittier” early films, though many also call it one of his most unintentionally funny. The film opened at number one at the U.S. box office, grossing over $10 million in its opening weekend.Out for Justice has become something of a cult favorite for fans of “so-bad-it's-good” action cinema, especially among Steven Seagal skeptics.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Send us a textDo you remember Above the Law from 1988? Well, if you're having trouble distinguishing this movie from the long list of other Seagal films, you are not alone. We remembered we liked it, much like we liked all his films from the 90s. They were a guarantee of an hour and a half of cheesy dialogue and over the top ass kicking. Well, this movie started it all. Not only did it star Steven Seagal, but he also produced and wrote it. We can't wait.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

Joe also dives into tales of off-grid camping with dirt bikes, side-by-sides, and the kind of rugged discomfort that builds character—or at least sore knees. In this week's episode, we are going to be looking at “Bullshido,” a catch-all term for martial arts practices that are either fake, delusional, or just plain useless. This is the land of no-touch knockouts, touches of death, and mystical masters who can't manage their own lives. For their 190th episode, two enlisted film critics, two centerfold dads, and two non-silent school teachers, Will Johnson and Don Shanahan, pull up their anchors, load their guns, and take on an 1990s action movie classic! Steven Seagal (and us) never had it better than 1992's "Under Siege," co-starring Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. This was director Andrew Davis's audition tape for "The Fugitive," and it becomes comical how much Seagal is squeezed out of his own movie. We talk about all the warheads of "Under Siege" and more! Is Steven Seagal's actioner Belly of the Beast utterly without redemption or does it merit some attention for aiming high but shooting low? The ScreenTime With AVForums team looks at Seagal's 2003 'meisterwerk' with its obvious action doubles, slow floor slides, mysterious sponge messages and endless John Woo style slo-mo in the hope of extracting maximum entertainment value.
One night in Bangkok makes a soft man mumble! Your Stupid Minds heads to Thailand and returns to the Steven Seagal well with one of his transitional films from theatrical to direct-to-video. It's 2003's Belly of the Beast! Jake Hopper (Seagal) is an ex-CIA agent whose daughter Jessica (Sara Malakul Lane) is kidnapped by... some group in Thailand. They also, coincidentally, kidnap her friend Sara (Elidh MacQueen), who happens to be the daughter of a United States Senator which sparks a covert international incident. Hopper tells his dead wife goodbye and immediately plods off to Southeast Asia to find his daughter. The CIA suspects the Islamic fundamentalist group Abu Karaf is behind the kidnapping, but Hopper, based on nothing, already knows it isn't them. He takes some time to beat up a group of aggro young men menacing sex worker Lulu (Monica Lo), who immediately starts following Hopper around like a lost puppy. He also stops off at a Buddhist temple to meet up with his former partner Sunti (Byron Mann) and boost his mysticism stats in order to fend off Buddhist voodoo from an evil monk, who Hopper also knows about somehow. What follows is a series of competently directed action set pieces from veteran Hong Kong director Ching Siu-tung. Apparently Ching disagreed with Seagal about how the fight scenes should be directed; Ching wanted them to be interesting and dynamic, while Seagal wanted them to be bad and boring. Ching won this fight and the result is lots of fluid action with coverage of Seagal brought in only when absolutely necessary. The wrapping around these action scenes is a bunch of spy intrigue mumbo jumbo, goofy mysticism, and dialogue where Seagal can show off the phonetic Thai he learned five minutes before the shoot. Will Hopper find his daughter? Is Abu Karaf behind it? Is this jacked glistening general with a British accent the real bad guy? You'll have to listen to find out!

The Spin Chagrin, a concept that finds Frank having to watch a movie he's never seen before based on the random spin of a wheel filled with off-the-wall genres, continues into its third year; the twist this year is that all the categories are quotables from Frank himself. In this episode, Frank's category was "He Looks Like a Monochrome Peacock,” referencing Steven Seagal. For this category, he watched and reviewed only one movie - because that's all he could take - Seagal's 2018 action movie, Attrition.
On this special episode of THE BIG 4-0, Ron and Peter look back at the first SEVEN films from one of our childhood action heroes, Steven Seagal. ABOVE THE LAW (1988), HARD TO KILL (1990), MARKED FOR DEATH (1990), OUT FOR JUSTICE (1991), UNDER SIEGE (1992), his directorial debut ON DEADLY GROUND (1994), and his only theatrical sequel and arguably the end of his run as a major box office draw, UNDER SIEGE 2: DARK TERRITORY (1995). That's a lot of films and a lot of ground to cover, so apologies if we didn't do each film or his entire career justice. There are a lot of interesting discussion points left on the table, many touched on, but not fully explored - such as a deeper dive into his past and wild background claims (CIA and/or mob ties?), excellent/interesting supporting cast members we mention but don't trace the arc of their careers as we normally would (Sharron Stone, Pam Grier, Kelly LeBrock, William Forsythe, Jerry Orbach, Tommy lee Jones, Gary Busy, Erika Eleniak, Michael Cain, John C. McGinley, Joan Chen, Billy Bob Thornton, Eric Bogosian, Evert McGill, Morris Chestnut, and Kathrine Heigel, among others), how he always uses a .45 pistol the way Riggs and McClane always use a Baretta, his badass Bronco in MARKED FOR DEATH, the fact that he looks great - damn near hunky - at 40, no less, in UNDER SIEGE, Bassil Poledouris' awesome ON DEADLY GROUND score, and Seagal's music career (two actually-not-bad blues albums!), post-theatrical-direct-to-DVD period, TV career (A&E's LAWMAN), his fashion, political beliefs, and his legal troubles, both as an accused sexual predator and a falling-out with his producing partner Julius Nasso, which led to a real-life Seagal/mob altercation - but as a focus on just these seven films, how they've aged, and where we each rank them in his filmography, it's an in-depth, fun, and revelatory episode. Please remember to Rate, Like, and Subscribe, and we'll be back in 1984 next time to burn down the house celebrating STOP MAKING SENSE and PARIS, TEXAS's BIG 4-0s!

Hey there, fellow Watchers! Welcome back to another episode of the Born to Watch Podcast. This week, we took a trip down memory lane with the 1988 action flick "Above the Law," which many of us remember fondly from our teenage years. However, revisiting it now, we found that it didn't quite hold up as well as we expected. Let's dive into why this Steven Seagal debut might be better left in the past."Above the Law" was directed by Andrew Davis, who later found success with films like "The Fugitive." This movie marks the debut of Steven Seagal as Nico Toscani, a martial artist turned cop. In our youth, the film's explosive action and gritty storyline seemed groundbreaking. But watching it with fresh eyes, the cracks in its veneer are hard to ignore. The movie opens with a flashback to Nico's Vietnam history, where the CIA recruits him. This backstory is meant to give depth to his character but ends up feeling clichéd and overblown. Fast-forward to present-day Chicago, where Nico, now a police officer, stumbles upon a conspiracy involving corrupt officials and drug trafficking. The plot seemed so gripping years ago but now comes across as convoluted and lacking in real substance. One of the biggest letdowns is the film's action sequences. While Seagal's real-life martial arts skills may be considered at the time to be undeniable, the fight scenes feel repetitive and lack the excitement we remember. The choreography, once thrilling, now seems sluggish and poorly executed. The realism Seagal brought to the action genre in the late '80s has been eclipsed by more dynamic and inventive fight scenes in modern cinema.Seagal's performance as Nico Toscani also falls flat on rewatch. His stoic delivery and limited range of expressions make it hard to connect with his character. What once seemed like a cool, zen-like demeanour now feels more like wooden acting. Seagal's physical presence is still impressive, but it's not enough to carry the movie. The supporting cast, which includes Pam Grier as Nico's partner, Delores ‘ Jacks Jackson and Henry Silva as the villainous Kurt Zagon, does their best with what they're given. Grier's charisma is undeniable, but her character lacks depth and is often relegated to the sidelines. Silva's portrayal of Zagon is menacing, but his role as the rogue CIA operative is a caricature of villainy, lacking nuance. The cinematography in "Above the Law" also doesn't hold up as well as we'd hoped. Chicago's gritty, urban landscape is still a highlight, but the film's overall visual style feels dated. The practical effects and real locations, which once added a sense of realism, now seem low-budget compared to today's standards. Andrew Davis's direction, while competent, lacks the flair that would make the movie visually engaging. The soundtrack, composed by David Michael Frank, does little to elevate the film. The music, which once seemed tense and driving, now feels generic and forgettable. It neither enhances the action nor adds to the emotional weight of the scenes. One of the most disappointing aspects of revisiting "Above the Law" is its socio-political themes. The movie attempts to tackle issues of governmental corruption and abuse of power, but these themes are handled with a heavy hand and lack subtlety. What seemed like a bold commentary in our teenage years now comes across as preachy and superficial. Moreover, "Above the Law" relays a bygone era in action cinema. Steven Seagal's debut may have established him as a new kind of action star, but his style feels outdated. The film set a template that Seagal would follow in many of his future movies, but that template has not aged well. Modern audiences demand more complexity and innovation, which "Above the Law" fails to deliver. In terms of cultural impact, while the film did pave the way for a more realistic portrayal of martial arts in Western cinema, its influence has waned. The once groundbreaking portrayal of Aikido is overshadowed by more dynamic and varied martial arts depictions in contemporary films.Revisiting "Above the Law," it's clear that nostalgia can be a double-edged sword. The film, which once held a special place in our hearts, now feels like a product of its time, struggling to stay relevant in today's action landscape. It's a reminder that not all movies age gracefully, and sometimes, our memories of them are better than the reality. In conclusion, "Above the Law" might have been a thrilling ride back in the late '80s, but it doesn't hold up under the scrutiny of a modern rewatch. Its dated action, flat performances, and heavy-handed themes make it a tough sell for today's audiences. If you're a die-hard Steven Seagal fan or have a soft spot for '80s action flicks, you might still enjoy it. But for the rest of us, it's a reminder that not all cinematic memories are worth revisiting. So, fellow Watchers, if you're thinking about rewatching this one, you might want to think twice. Sometimes, it's better to let our teenage memories stay in the past. Until next time, keep watching and remember that some things are best left above the law.

Welcome back to Unclear and Present Danger! It's our first episode of the new year and we're here with a pretty fun movie — “Executive Decision,” directed by Stuart Baird, produced by Joel Silver and starring Kurt Russell, Halle Berry, John Leguizamo, Oliver Platt, Joe Morton, Steven Seagal and many others. Music by, as you might expect, Jerry Goldsmith. In “Executive Decision,” an intelligence analyst played by Russell and a group of commandos, led by Seagal, must infiltrate a passenger jet bound for Washington DC that has been hijacked by a terrorist group. On board the jet is enough nerve toxin to kill everyone on the eastern seaboard. Most of the film is a tense standoff on the airliner, as the commandos try to defuse the nerve bomb and take down the terrorists, while the terrorists move forward with their mission.
