[CN/TW: Suicide, suicidal ideation] Katee Pedicini has become a regular on Sparta Chicks Radio over the years.  Yet this is a very different conversation from our previous episodes. This time, Katee shared her story.  It’s the story of her mental health journey over the last 20 years. In her 20s, Katee was (finally) diagnosed with a condition called Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder (or PMDD) which affects between 3-8% of menstruating woman. To describe it as, or compare it to, PMS doesn’t do it justice. And in fact, it would do a disservice to those who suffer from it. Katee describes it in this conversation as extreme PMS “wrapped up with anxiety, depression, sometimes psychosis and suicidality or suicidal tendencies” We begin this conversation with Katee’s story. Her experience of the symptoms of PMDD, including suicidal ideation. Then we transition into a broader conversation about suicide and mental health.  Finally, we step back and discuss the intersection between mental health and endurance sports. This was an extremely difficult conversation, for both of us. I’m in awe of Katee’s bravery and vulnerability.  But lifting the shame around suicide and mental health requires brave and uncomfortable conversations and we both agreed that if this conversation saves one life, then it was worth it. Katee Pedicini’s work around hormones and their impact on our health, happiness and performance has been pivotal for many women, myself included. Katee is the founder of Holistic Endurance and is based in Melbourne. She’s a triathlon coach and self-confessed hormone nerd who specialises in managing fatigue, stress and hormones to achieve not only performance but optimal health and happiness. And I can hand-on-heart say Katee and her work has changed my life. Katee has been on the podcast in both 2017 and 2018. And if you haven’t listened to either conversation (or perhaps you haven’t heard them recently) I’d encourage you to go back and listen to them first as this episode is the 3rd part of a series, and the first 2 conversations will lay the foundations for what we talk about today. (You can find the previous episodes here and here). This time, we dive into the importance of recovery and rejuvenation. Now on the face of it, it may not seem a ‘sexy’ topic. But the importance of this can’t be understated. You can’t have performance improvements - you can’t get fitter, faster or stronger - without recovery and rejuvenation. And you certainly can’t have happy hormones, weight, mood and energy balance without it. Katee has also developed a Rejuvenation Protocol  - which she shares in this conversation - which allows you to track and quantify, via a point score system, your recovery and rejuvenation (and give yourself some bragging rights in the process). Steph is a triathlete, Sports Nutritionist and the Founder of the Natural Nutritionist, a business based in Melbourne, Australia dedicated to teaching how easy real food living and performance can be. The foundation of her approach is a whole foods, lower carb higher fat (or LCHF) lifestyle, which she also describes as JERF (just eat real food). This conversation ties together with the previous conversations I’ve had with Katee Pedicini on the podcast as nutrition is one of Katee’s key recommendations for developing happy hormones. In this conversation, we discuss: - the profound impact removing gluten had on Steph’s physical and mental health, - why food is medicine, - the benefits of adopting an LCHF lifestyle (and whether you would experience the same benefits if you are not gluten intolerant), - the most common tell-tale symptoms a person might have that would benefit from adopting an LCHF lifestyle (listen up if you have 3.30-itis, you get hangry or if you experience cravings), - the impact of gut health on your hormonal cycle, PMS and immune system, - the added benefits of adopting an LCHF lifestyle for athletes (including for those who struggle with weight loss despite heavy amounts of training), - why carb-loading doesn’t make sense and why the intensity of your training should dictate your carb intake (not what stage of training you’re in), - how to make the transition to an LCHF lifestyle and the ideal time to do it, and - the benefits of fasting (and how to capitalise on what you’re already doing). Elly is a marathon runner and nutritionist who works with Steph Lowe (episode 69) at The Natural Nutritionist. Elly first explored an LCHF (lower carb, healthy fat) protocol after various health issues caused her to question the traditional approach to nutrition she’d been taught at University (including the (in)famous food pyramid). After working in the United States, Elly decided to adopt a vegan diet. But soon found that it wasn’t conducive for her to thrive as a marathon runner. Now Elly’s the first to admit many athletes thrive using a vegan or vegetarian protocol, but she realised she isn’t one of them. Elly’s experience is a great example of why it’s important to personalise your approach to training and nutrition, rather than simply adopting what’s popular or what your friends are doing. In many ways, this episode is an extension of my conversation with Steph Lowe and previous episodes with Katee Pedicini in that we discuss nutrition, fat adaptation, hormones and an LCHF lifestyle. I should also mention: I am neither vegan nor vegetarian! But there’s no denying there are massive benefits (for us and for the environment) to be gained when we add more plant-based foods to our diet. So even if you are carnivorous like me, I know you’ll benefit from listening to this episode. We begin by discussing how Elly’s love of nutrition developed in High School and how she discovered running in her early 20s. After that, we dive into discuss specific considerations that vegan or vegetarian athletes need to consider. Then in the second half, we explore broader issues that are relevant to all athletes, regardless of what diet you adopt. If there is one complaint I hear from women more than any other, it is their frustration about not losing weight despite the hours and hours of training involved with endurance sports (or worse, that they’ve put weight on!). So I wanted to call in an expert for Sparta Chicks Radio this week to explain why this happens — and, most importantly, what you can do to change it. Katee Pedicini runs Holistic Endurance in Melbourne, Australia. She’s a triathlon coach with a degree in Exercise Science who specialises in managing fatigue, stress and hormones in endurance athletes. But this isn’t only a conversation about weight. It’s a conversation about your health and the widespread impact stress has on your body. From your risk of injury and illness, the results you get (or don’t get) from your training, how quickly you recover from hard training sessions, how tired you feel, whether you hit the wall at 3pm and have to reach for coffee/chocolate/sugar, you feel like you're constantly on a short fuse to whether you need a glass of wine at the end of a busy day to wind down. These are all factors that are influenced by the amount of stress in your life and the hormonal response your body has to that stress. I was so excited to speak to Katee Pedicini of Holistic Endurance. Katee is an endurance athlete and coach. I was really interested to speak to Katee, because she had adrenal fatigue, and not only managed to heal - but did all this whilst training for an Iron Man! It's really encouraging to hear how, even if your cortisol levels are as depleted as Katee's were, you can recover. Katee also shared her hormonal based approach to training, which is so logical, I'm amazed it isn't common place. We also spoke about gut health, why adrenal fatigue makes it almost impossible to lose weight and which steps to take if you have adrenal fatigue

In Episode 8 of The Real Food Reel we speak with Katee Pedicini from Holistic Endurance. Katee has a Bachelor of Exercise Science with a Major in Sports Psychology and is a Triathlon Australia Level 1 Triathlon Coach. I'm really excited to introduce you to Katee as we work closely together with our athletes and share a really similar philosophy, which you'll learn more about today. Katee and I dive in deep to real food for performance, efficient training and periodisation and how women should be structuring their training around their menstrual cycle. We recognise the importance of recovery, and this applies to all athletes – if you don't have a structured recovery week every four or five weeks you are asking for trouble! To find out more about Holistic Endurance and our philosophies of training and racing, hit play and enjoy the show.
