Join me as I chat with Brian Keane, a health and fitness expert, about what really works when it comes to nutrition and fitness. We dive into building a fitness routine that's sustainable, focusing on nutrient-dense foods rather than just counting calories. Brian explains that nutrition isn't about sticking to strict diets like Paleo or low-carb but finding what works best for your unique goals, whether it's building muscle, boosting energy, or staying healthy. He also shares lessons from his extreme athletic experiences and offers advice on mental toughness, goal setting, and overcoming challenges. This episode is packed with valuable tips for anyone looking to take a more personalized, holistic approach to health. Key Takeaways: Discovering a personalized nutrition plan is crucial, focusing on sustainability and individual goals rather than rigid diet plans. Nutrient density should take precedence over calorie counting in a well-rounded nutritional strategy. Mental toughness and confidence are not inherent traits but can be developed by keeping consistent promises to oneself. An integrated approach to fitness—considering sleep, nutrition, and exercise is more effective than isolating each health element. Setting clear, attainable goals with processes aligned toward them enhances the likelihood of successful health transformations. More About Brian Keane: Brian Keane, widely known as Brian Keane Fitness, is a REPs-qualified Level 3 Personal Trainer, certified Strength and Conditioning Coach, and Sports Nutritionist. Over the past seven years, he has transitioned from being a full-time primary school teacher to becoming one of Ireland's most prominent thought leaders in health, fitness, and nutrition. His expertise has earned him mainstream media features in outlets such as the UK and Irish Daily Mail, Star, Mirror, and Men's and Women's Health magazines. Beyond traditional media, Brian has built a thriving presence online with social media platforms boasting over half a million followers combined. Brian also hosts one of Ireland and the UK's top health podcasts, consistently ranked #1 on the iTunes Health Charts. Through his online fitness programs, which graduate over a thousand participants annually, he helps individuals achieve weight loss, fitness, or body composition goals. His approach focuses on sustainable fitness plans and reshaping mindsets around food, emphasising that mindset is more critical than any specific diet plan. He advocates for personalised nutrition rather than one-size-fits-all approaches like low-carb, vegan, or paleo diets. In addition to his online programs, Brian is the bestselling author of The Fitness Mindset, which spent 16 weeks on the Amazon bestseller list, and Rewire Your Mindset, another bestseller published in December 2019. He has become one of the most recognisable figures in the Irish health and fitness industry, speaking at renowned wellness events like Wellfest and serving as a keynote speaker at Google HQ in Dublin during their 2018 wellness event. As an athlete, Brian has achieved remarkable milestones, transitioning from professional fitness modeling to ultra-endurance sports. He has tackled some of the world's most challenging environments, including running through the Sahara Desert, braving the Arctic, and completing a 100-mile ultra-marathon. Angela talks once more to bestselling author, Brian Keane about his new book, "Rewriting Your Story," which explores the seven habits that help individuals reclaim their power and overcome limiting beliefs. The conversation highlights the importance of recognising and questioning the narratives that hold us back, particularly in the realms of health, relationships, and success. Brian shares insights from his own experiences, including his extreme physical challenges like climbing Kilimanjaro and running through the Arctic, emphasizing how fear can be harnessed as a tool for growth KEY TAKEAWAYS Many people struggle with self-sabotaging beliefs that can be addressed through awareness and questioning of these limiting stories. Effective productivity is more about managing energy than managing time. Identifying priorities and values allows for better decision-making regarding what to say yes or no to, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Fear is a natural part of life and can be harnessed rather than eliminated. Learning to manage fear and using it as feedback can lead to personal growth and the ability to take on challenges, such as physical feats or significant life changes. The tendency to compare oneself to others can be detrimental. It's crucial to recognise that everyone has their own journey and to also compare oneself to those who are further behind to cultivate gratitude and perspective. BEST MOMENTS "Sometimes you have to actually be microly imbalanced... as long as those things don't become chronic." "Fear is something that you would eventually go away if you did enough things. What I didn't know was the fear never goes away." "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." "The awareness in the first step towards any positive change is awareness around you've done it." I've made it my business to know. I've been a professional in the sports nutrition field for more than a decade. But, my love of the game, all games, actually goes much, much farther back."Growing up, it seemed to me that the whole state of Nebraska was focused on football. People drove hours to see the Cornhuskers play. Neighbors who moved out-of-state flew back to town for games. On game weekends my house was a sea of red and white clothing as my entire family gathered to listen to the game on the radio. I was hooked! My interest in sports grew, exponentially, from there.By high school I'd decided to become an athletic trainer. In college, with the encouragement of a mentor (an athletic trainer), I combined my passion for sports with an interest in nutrition. I decided to major in "sports" nutrition, with an emphasis in athletic training.Seeking the best education possible in both fields, I headed off to Arizona State University, a Division I College. How can you focus on muscle and body composition in menopause, specifically gaining muscle and losing fat? How many sets,  repetitions, and how much rest should you take? How much can you follow research featuring young athletic men and how should you advocate for yourself when trainers aren't using science based on women? We cover this all today with my guest who is a well-respected and prolific researcher and published author in the field of human performance. Optimizing muscle and body composition in menopause, that is gaining muscle and losing fat is the focus of this episode. A researcher I met personally a decade ago, whose name has become nearly synonymous with any new study on muscle, hypertrophy, and protocols, joins me. Want Stronger Muscles? Let's Talk Muscle and Body Composition in Menopause! Women in midlife are often more susceptible to negative effects of stress. We have a frequent occurrence in our membership of women who are “pushing through” and not actually getting stronger or more fit, because of adrenal insufficiency or a combination of things, we find that less is more, if we can get adequate stimulus during a session and balance that with adequate recovery, we have a better opportunity to improve quality of life for women who need muscle mass and bone density but not at the cost of exhaustion and injury. My Guest: BRAD SCHOENFELD Brad Schoenfeld, PhD, CSCS, CSPS, FNSCA, is a professor of exercise science at Lehman College in the Bronx, New York, where he serves as the graduate director of the Human Performance and Fitness program. He also formerly served as the Sports Nutritionist for the New Jersey Devils hockey organization. Dr. Schoenfeld has published more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers on various exercise- and sports nutrition-related topics, and authored the seminal textbook, "Science and Development of Muscle Hypertrophy." He was the recipient of the 2016 Dwight D. Eisenhower Fitness Award, presented by the United States Sports Academy for outstanding achievement in fitness and contributions to the growth and development of sport fitness through outstanding leadership activity, as well as earning the 2018 National Strength and Conditioning Association Young Investigator of the Year Award. His research interest is to optimize body composition (muscle hypertrophy and fat loss) . In particular, his lab studies the manipulation of resistance training variables and their effects on muscular adaptations. QUESTIONS we Cover in this Episode: Why this? What originally propelled you into this field of study and ultimately to teach and advise others? What have been the most aha moments for you in conducting the research on muscle ? Define Muscle hypertrophy vs Muscle strength Define and elaborate on “Volume” We mentioned frequency of exercise and the consideration of the volume of recovery Time under tension and tempo training CONNECT: Website: https://www.lookgreatnaked.com/about_brad.php On Social: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brad.schoenfeld.cscs Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bradschoenfeldphd/ Resources: Hot, Not Bothered Challenge: https://www.flippingfifty.com/hnb-challenge 5 Day Flip: https://www.flippingfifty.com STRONGER: https://www.flippingfifty.com/getstronger Other Episodes You Might Like: Questions About Gaining Muscle and Strength for Women Over 50 - https://www.flippingfifty.com/gaining-muscle-and-strength/ 3 Steps to Gain Lean Muscle in Menopause - https://www.flippingfifty.com/gain-lean-muscle/ Short Workouts for Women Over 50 | What Works? - https://www.flippingfifty.com/short-workouts-for-women-over-50/

Leslie is a Registered Dietician, Sports Nutritionist, Nutrition Specialist and specializes in eating disorders. They discuss her book and Leslie shares advice about parenting, health and diet culture. Health isn't just about diet and exercise or the food we put in our bodies. It is so much bigger in terms of mental health, connection and listening to our bodies.Paige's Takeaways:Don't be afraid of food. Food fears are actually more unhealthy than the food itself. If we are looking at food like it's dangerous, that is going to cause stress.  It's going to eliminate the ability to eat healthy foods or to give our bodies the food that it needs.Make additions to your eating, don't tell yourself that you can't have something. If we are telling ourselves “no” that's going to make us lean into rebellion more and eat those things or supplement with something else. Just add to your diet instead.Take a moment and listen to the cues that your body is giving you. Our bodies are divinely designed. They are designed with purpose and on purpose. If our bodies are telling us we need something or we are hungry, listen! WE need to treat our bodies with honor and respect and listen to it.WE are modeling for our kids. If you speak ashamedly about your body, about your weight, about your clothes, your hair or your appearance, our kids are going to pick up on that. This goes for both girls and boys so be mindful of what you are saying. This can affect mental health as well.Paige ClingenpeelQuestions About the Podcast? Food is fuel, right? But what kind of fuel is best for our lives as runners? And perhaps most importantly, how do we integrate great nutritional choices into our busy lives? It doesn't seem like there are many simple answers in the world of nutrition… at least not until you hear from today's guest! Meghann Featherstun is a Sports Nutritionist, entrepreneur, athlete, mom, and so much more.  In this week's episode, she joins the podcast to discuss why nutrition is such a crucial component to lasting enjoyment and success in running, and how to maximize every opportunity to fuel well for performance and recovery. Meghann shares insight into:  Why all carbs aren't created equal, and how to fuel appropriately with both simple and complex carbohydrates. Carb loading tips for athletes to maximize race day performance. Why caloric and carbohydrate intake recommendations aren't dependent on ability-level, and how to use intensity as a key measuring stick for your fueling strategy. How protein supports the body's ability to perform and recover, plus why you should establish a goal amount of protein to consume with each meal. Why hydration is a 'make or break' aspect of your performance, along with key signs of dehydration in your training and daily life. Thank you so much to Meghann for joining the podcast. One hour before training or during training athletes should eat simple carbohydrates to maintain glycogen (energy reserve) levels in the body. Join Carlette Patterson, Head Sports Life Coach® & CEO of Patterson Sports Ventures® and Caio De Souza, Sports Nutritionist and Health Coach to learn about supplements, nutrition for young athletes, the connection between food and mood, and if fasting is right for you.Winning Strategies:Take care of your gut. Gut health affects mood because 70% of the immune system is affected by the gut biome. When the bad bacteria in our gut takes over the good bacteria, called dysbiosis, it puts our body in constant distress and can send signals to our brain, negatively affecting our mood.An easy nutrition hack is to have a protein shake and simple carbohydrates directly after working out. For our muscles, the protein will rebuild and the carbohydrates will refuel. With young athletes, approach nutrition simply but effectively. Set them up for success in the long-run by teaching the importance of fueling and recovering with nutrition, starting by eating enough of the right macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, and proteins).Get Coached 2 Win Your Wellbeing:www.sportslifecoaching.comWatch the full episode: https://youtu.be/4JDjhRPas3MGET COACHED: www.lifetrainingacademy.comBe a CHAMP10N for your Wellbeing: www.championwellbeing.comFOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @championwellbeing @lifetrainingacademy @chiefwellbeingofficersFacebook: www.facebook.com/ltachamp10nLinkedIn: CHAMP10N Wellbeing | H2H Wellbeing Chief Wellbeing Officers | H2H WellbeingTwitter: @coachcarletteFor inquiries contact us: karina@lifetrainingacademy.comPlease subscribe so you can keep up to date with our CHAMP10N TEAM!

Winning Strategies:Use the 80:20 Rule: where 80% of your foods are whole foods such as lean proteins or leafy greens and 20% of your foods are foods that may “feed your soul” such as processed foods or sweet treats. The truth about nutrition is that there is not one specific diet or lifestyle change that will work for everyone to reach peak performance. Our bio-individuality means that tuning in to the body after meals is the best way to make an informed decision about the foods that feel best for you.Stay intentional throughout your NUTRIT10N journey by establishing clear goals and the steps to get there.
