A refreshed version of the plan, which upholds these five long-term goals, was approved by members of the Board of Trustees in 2025.    During his tenure, President Mearns has pursued initiatives that have sustained and expanded the University's enrollment, despite the adverse impact of the pandemic, and increased alumni engagement and fundraising. President Mearns has also strengthened the University's relationship with the community, most notably through its innovative partnership with Muncie Community Schools and its ambitious plan to revitalize The Village through a $200 million mixed use academic village redevelopment.  During his tenure the University continues to invest in core academic, student life, and athletic facilities.   A former elite collegiate distance running athlete and distinguished attorney and federal prosecutor, he previously served as President at Northern Kentucky University and Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Cleveland State University.  He and his wife Jennifer have five adult children and multiple grandchildren.

Most runners think once you hit 50… your best running years are behind you. It's time to slow down. Run less. Lower expectations. But what if that's completely wrong? In this episode, I sit down with RRCA Certified Running Coach and Spark Healthy Runner coach, Colleen Masse, who started marathon training at 50… and has since completed 22 marathons, including all six World Marathon Majors (Berlin, London, Tokyo, Chicago, New York, and Boston). But this isn't just a story about big races. It's about what's actually possible when you train smart, stay consistent, and build a strong, durable body. We dive into how Colleen went from thinking she hated racing… to finding purpose, joy, and community in running during a major life transition. And more importantly, we break down exactly how she's been able to stay healthy while doing it. In this episode, you'll learn: -How to start running or return to running after 50 -The key differences in marathon training after 40 and 50 -How to build durability and avoid the injury cycle -Why masters runners may actually have an advantage -How to balance training with a full time career and family -The mindset shift from pressure to purpose in your running If you've ever wondered if it's "too late" to chase big running goals… this episode will change your perspective. Your strongest chapter might still be ahead.

Most runners aren't stuck because of fitness… they're stuck because they keep repeating the same mistakes.Every marathoner is somewhere on the five-level spectrum—and most don't even realize they're training themselves into a trap. In this episode, I break down the stages every runner moves through, the exact moments the transitions happen, and why some levels lead to growth while others quietly wreck your performance, mindset, and enjoyment. You'll learn how to recognize where you are right now, avoid the psychological and physical pitfalls that derail so many runners, and dial in the approach that keeps you improving without burning out.Key TakeawaysEvery marathoner moves through predictable levels, and most get stuck because they repeat the same habits without changing anything.Chasing times too aggressively turns smart training into obsession, which often leads to injury, burnout, and frustration. The best progress happens when you stay curious, train with intention, and avoid letting your self-worth depend on one race result.Timestamps- [00:00:20:14] What You'll Learn- [00:01:02:26] LEVEL 1: THE BUCKET-LISTER- [00:02:08:15] Use This To Run a Smarter Marathon- [00:02:51:27] Level 2 – The Repeater- [00:05:02:12] Do This Easy Thing To Help Another Runner- [00:05:17:00] Level 3: The Student- [00:07:24:14] LEVEL 4: THE QUALIFIER- [00:09:36:13] LEVEL 5: THE ZEN PSYCHOPATH- [00:10:45:04] What Level Should You Really Be On?- [00:11:43:25] Do This Before You Run Your MarathonLinks & Learnings

Endurance Running is a Bad Idea For Most People!: 40 Mind-Blowing Assertions From Born To Walk

The B.rad Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 23, 2025 62:39

In this show, I share 40 mind-blowing assertions to recalibrate modern fitness philosophy, inspired by content in the book Born to Walk, written by me and Mark Sisson. Walking is universally health-boosting, delivers excellent aerobic conditioning, stabilizes energy, mood, and appetite, and carries near zero overuse injury risk. In contrast, endurance running—even at a comfortable pace—is too physically stressful for the vast majority of participants, promotes breakdown, burnout, and chronic injury, and is most likely bad for your health when done in the typical modern manner. You’ll hear why walking is a genetic expectation for health, why most endurance exercise should be conducted at or below your fat max heart rate, and how chronic cardio promotes stress hormone overproduction, suppressed immune function, and visceral fat storage. I also explain why elevated cushioned shoes enable poor running technique, drive injuries, and why recreational endurance running has only been possible in modern times because of them. Key points from this episode: Walking is universally health-boosting and delivers excellent aerobic conditioning with minimal risk Running is too strenuous and stressful for most participants; walking should be the baseline Fat max heart rate (180 minus age) is the true measure for energizing, fat-burning cardio Chronic cardio promotes overuse injury, stress hormone overproduction, suppressed immunity, and visceral fat Elevated cushioned shoes enable poor running technique and are the driver of chronic injury rates The most celebrated endurance events (marathon, Ironman) are antithetical to health and fueled by marketing hype Humans never ran for recreation until the modern running boom; ancestral movement was built on walking, strength, sprints, and play Learn more at BornToWalkBook.com, where you can also download the free PDF resource with all 40 assertions and more tools for building lifelong health. Elly is a marathon runner and nutritionist who (at the time of recording this conversation in 2018) worked with Steph Lowe (episode 69) at The Natural Nutritionist.Elly first explored an LCHF (lower carb, healthy fat) protocol after various health issues caused her to question the traditional approach to nutrition she'd been taught at University (including the (in)famous food pyramid). After working in the United States, Elly decided to adopt a vegan diet. But soon found that it wasn't conducive for her to thrive as a marathon runner. Now Elly's the first to admit many athletes thrive using a vegan or vegetarian protocol, but she realised she isn't one of them.Elly's experience is a great example of why it's important to personalise your approach to training and nutrition, rather than simply adopting what's popular or what your friends are doing. In many ways, this episode is an extension of my conversation with Steph Lowe and previous episodes with Katee Pedicini in that we discuss nutrition, fat adaptation, hormones and an LCHF lifestyle.I should also mention: I am neither vegan nor vegetarian! But there's no denying there are massive benefits (for us and for the environment) to be gained when we add more plant-based foods to our diet. So even if you are carnivorous like me, I know you'll benefit from listening to this episode. We begin by discussing how Elly's love of nutrition developed in High School and how she discovered running in her early 20s.After that, we dive into discuss specific considerations that vegan or vegetarian athletes need to consider. Then in the second half, we explore broader issues that are relevant to all athletes, regardless of what diet you adopt.
