How to Master Decades of Running and Still Feel Young: Cynthia Miller

The Planted Runner

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2023 43:40

Watch this episode on YouTube Let's face it.  Our culture values youth, beauty, and in the running world, speed. We train to get faster, stronger, and to cross that finish line just a little quicker than we did last time. The good news is that if you picked up running as an adult, even at an age where you are past your biological physical prime, you can grow muscle and run faster with good training and nutrition.  And you can keep improving for years, possibly even decades. But if you've been running your whole life and were well-trained at your physical peak, you will eventually slow down with age.  Paces that once seemed easy for you will become harder and harder.  Race finishing times will get slower and slower.  And you will find that recovery from training and racing takes longer and longer. It's enough to depress even the most upbeat masters runner into hanging up your running shoes and settling for life in a rocking chair. In this episode, we are going to have a conversation about running and aging exceptionally with master's runner Cynthia Miller. You'll learn: About how Cynthia started running in her first pair of waffle soled Nikes, How her passion for running has only grown despite the normal effects of getting older, and How changing her perspective about what's truly important in life and in running helps bring her joy and meaning, no matter what her race times are now. Cynthia shares moving and inspiring stories about how her running has evolved over the years and how it keeps her feeling young even at almost 70 years old. So if you plan to run as long as you possibly can, but are struggling with the downsides of getting older, this is one you don't want to miss.  And you'll definitely want to check this one out on YouTube because you are not going to believe how youthful Cynthia looks. Research Has Shown That Parkinson's Patients Get Better With Yoga Pamela A. Popper, PhD, N.D. • https://drpampopper.com/ • Book - Food over Medicine: The Conversation That Could Save Your Life #PamPopper #FoodPolitics #MedicalMisinformation Dr. Pam Popper is a naturopath, an internationally recognized expert on nutrition, medicine and health, the Executive Director of Wellness Forum Health and accomplished author. Her book Food Over Medicine: The Conversation That Could Save Your Life. In Food Over Medicine, Dr Pamela A. Popper, and Glen Merzer invite the reader into a conversation about the dire state of American health—the result of poor nutrition choices stemming from food politics and medical misinformation. But, more important, they share the key to getting and staying healthy for life. Nearly half of Americans take at least one prescription medicine, with almost a quarter taking three or more, as diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and dementia grow more prevalent than ever. The problem with medicating common ailments, such as high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol, is that drugs treat symptoms—and may even improve test results—without addressing the cause: diet. Overmedicated, overfed, and malnourished, most Americans fail to realize the answer to lower disease rates doesn't lie in more pills but in the foods we eat. With so much misleading nutritional information regarded as common knowledge, from “everything in moderation” to “avoid carbs,” the average American is ill-equipped to recognize the deadly force of abundant, cheap, unhealthy food options that not only offer no nutritional benefits but actually bring on disease. Backed by numerous scientific studies, Food Over Medicine details how dietary choices either build health or destroy it. Food Over Medicine reveals the power and practice of optimal nutrition in an accessible way. Dr. Pam Popper's company Wellness Forum Health, offers educational programs for consumer and healthcare providers that facilitate evidence-base, collaborative and informed decision making for health-related matters. Dr. Popper serves on the Physician's Steering Committee and the President's Board for the Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington D.C. She served as part of Dr. T. Colin Campbell's teaching team at eCornell, teaching part of a certification course on plant-based nutrition. She has been featured in many widely distributed documentaries and appeared in the acclaimed documentary Forks Over Knives, which played in major theaters throughout North America. Dr. Popper is also a lobbyist and public policy expert, and continually works toward changing laws that interfere with patients' right to choose their health provider and method of care. She has testified in front of legislative committees on numerous occasions, and has testified twice in front of the USDA's Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. To Contact Dr Pam Popper go to DrPamPopper.com Disclaimer:Medical and Health information changes constantly. Watch this episode on YouTube! It can be so inspiring to hear the stories of the best in the world.  Runners who do superhuman things running at speeds most of us can only imagine. The only problem is that elite runners are not typically all that relatable to the rest of us. So when I had a request to interview real, every day runners, who are not professionals, I loved the idea.  Because most of us are just normal people who run because it's our passion, not our job.  We have other jobs, and kids, and mortgages to pay, and yet running is just as important to us as the pros. And I would argue our running is just as inspiring. Today I'll be talking to one of my own athletes, Nicole Dalal.  We'll go over: Her story of finding running in her mid forties How going from a stock internet plan, then to a custom plan, then finally to joining the PR Team changed her running, and Why getting help and finding community has been a lifesaver for her, even though she doesn't consider herself  fast or experienced This is a new kind of episode for me and I'd love to hear what you think.  It's a bit of a love letter to running and finding community and it's made possible by the PR Team.  If this sounds like what you and your running need, head to theplantedrunner.com/group to learn more today. Does Some Medication Cause Autoimmune Diseases? Pamela A. Her book Food Over Medicine: The Conversation That Could Save Your LifeIn Food Over Medicine, Dr Pamela A. She has been featured in many widely distributed documentaries and appeared in the acclaimed documentary Forks Over Knives, which played in major theaters throughout North America.Dr. Small, Frequent, Low-Fat Meals Are Helpful For Parkinson's Patients Pamela A.
