Let's be honest – choking down another gel at hour three on a long ride isn't anyone's idea of fun. If you’re done with flavour fatigue, you’ve been struggling with nasty GI issues or you’ve crawled home like a zombie after bonking mid-ride, this episode is for you. While gels and sports nutrition products have their place, they're not the only answer to fuelling your long rides. Fuelling doesn’t have to be expensive or gut-destroying. There are loads of real food options that taste amazing and keep your energy up from start to finish. Today I’m sharing five of my go-to real food ideas for long ride fuelling. Why Real Food Matters When it comes to sessions longer than two or three hours, proper fuelling isn't optional—it’s essential. Without effective fuel, you're risking poor performance and compromising recovery and immunity. Consistently under-fuelling can lead to fatigue, poorer training adaptations, and even hormonal issues. Let's avoid that by being strategic about our nutrition. Common Mistakes in Long Ride Fuelling Overreliance on Sports Nutrition Products: A lot of athletes exclusively depend on gels and sports drinks but this can lead to GI distress, let alone the flavour fatigue due to their sweet, monotonous nature. Choosing the Wrong Types of Real Food: Opting for heavy, high-fiber or high-protein snacks can be really hard on your gut, especially over extended periods. For the extended sessions, you need to focus on easy-to-digest carbohydrates that deliver quick energy without the bloat. Inadequate Packaging and Practicality: Your snacks need to be accessible on the bike, otherwise they become soggy, melt, or fall apart. This is one of the major appeals of gels and other sports nutrition products but there are ways to package homemade foods properly. Flavour Fatigue and Lack of Variety: There aren’t many athletes out there who are actually happy to chew on the same gummies or choke down the same gel hour after hour. So many athletes ask me how to change it up, including savoury options and varying textures. It can be done! Mismatched Fuelling to Ride Intensity and Duration: Not all rides are created equal which is why you need to tailor your nutrition strategy to match the intensity and duration of each session. Top 5 Real Food Ideas for Long Rides Rice Cakes: Light and versatile with sweet or savoury flavors. Perfect for long, steady aerobic rides. Energy Balls: My recipe is portable and customisable with endless flavors. Ideal for a mid-ride energy boost. Dietitian-Approved Bike Bars: This is my take on a homemade muesli / granola bar for a nutritious, easy-to-digest mid-ride snack. Fruit Puree Pouches: Quick carbs in a mess-free option. Great for sensitive stomachs and hot conditions. High Carb Muffins: Sports-specific muffins offer a delicious and practical treat for long endurance rides, without the excess fat and fibre of store bought options. You can find these specific recipes and loads more in my Fuel Your Adventure Recipe book, which is packed with recipes to help you fuel better and power your body to perform at your best. LINKS:

Today, Lou investigates the essential topic of nutrition for optimal performance, recovery, and results, addressing long-standing listener requests. With a focus on fueling the body effectively, she covers the importance of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats, along with hydration tips and practical meal strategies for pre- and post-workout. KEY TAKEAWAYS Carbohydrates are essential for peak performance and recovery. They should make up 50-60% of your daily caloric intake, especially for those engaging in high levels of physical activity. Adequate protein intake is crucial for muscle repair and recovery. Aim for 1.6 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, which should account for 20-30% of your daily intake. Healthy fats are important for long-term energy and hormone regulation, particularly for women. They should not be completely avoided, but consumed in moderation to prevent excessive calorie intake. Eating a balanced meal with carbohydrates and protein before and after workouts is vital. Pre-workout meals should be consumed 1-3 hours prior, while post-workout meals should be consumed within 1-2 hours for optimal recovery. Staying hydrated is crucial for performance, especially during endurance training. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, cramping, and poor recovery, so it's important to drink water before, during, and after workouts. BEST MOMENTS "You can be working out super, super hard, but you are only gonna be as good as what you are eating." "Carbs are life and they are our body's primary energy source, without them we are going to be running on an empty tank." "You will be technically underfueling and you will feel fatigued, you may also end up with mental burnout as well." "You can still lose fat and eat a crap load of carbs. I promise I am living proof of it right now." "Don't try something new on the day [of the race]. Your body's not ready; just stick with what you know." But everything changed during the lockdown in March 2020. Determined to regain control, Lou immersed herself in research, found joy in working out in her garden, and started tracking her nutrition and steps. Surprisingly, she lost a stone in less than three months and discovered a newfound love for fitness. Fuelling her passion, Lou pursued personal training qualifications and launched her Instagram page in September 2020. After months of building a solid foundation, branding, and gaining relevant expertise, she started helping others achieve what once felt impossible—losing fat, feeling empowered, and loving the journey without restrictions. With numerous success stories, digital products, and a thriving membership program called Train with Lou, Lou now coaches, teaches, and learns about food, exercise, and mindset.

In the build up to our Speakers Only reunion event at Moonshot this week, in partnership with MLB, we are revisiting our conversation from last summer with their European Managing Director, Ben Ladkin. Although now representing a major American sports league, Ben's journey in sport began at Arsenal, where he spent 11 years, eventually leading the media group and building their digital and social media presence during the dot com era.Now at MLB, he operates across three key pillars: content, events, and participation. While the content pillar aligns closely with his past experience, he has embraced the new challenges of organising major events like the London Series (which took place earlier this month) as well as fostering baseball participation in Europe. This has required tapping into popular U.S. sports already capturing mind-share in Europe, finding alignment with popular global sports such as cricket, and tapping into culture and the wider export of Americana.Timestamps 2:00 - Ben's Journey 6:00 - How London Differs from other MLB International Markets 8:00 - Tapping into Cricket Fandom12:00 - Incorporating Education into Content14:00 - Strategy and Ambitions Across the Wider European Market17:00 - Tapping in to Merchandise and Music24:00 - Who Gets to Play in the London Series? 25:00 - Special Edition Merch28:00 - Ballpark Food and Exporting Americana31:00 - Future Plans and 365 Engagement Strategies Additional LinksHome Plate: MLB's Recipe for Increasing Fan AppetiteCan Cricket SUPERSTAR Harry Brook learn how to hit a baseball in just 1 day?! In this week's Spotlight, we swing the light from cycling to doping, via trans news updates and some success stories from our Discourse members. We kick off with a chat about whether we've been too obsessed with power numbers, and not talking enough about speed, as pointed out by Christoph Roodhooft of Alpecin's pro-cycling team. We discuss what it means to be an "economic cyclist", which allows Gareth to propose the concept of "physiological frugality", which we are 100% sure will take over from "durability" as the next-big-thing in elite cycling by 2027!We also chat briefly about positive fuelling experiences shared with us by Discourse members, who've managed to push their energy intakes up thanks to the experts we've heard from on the pod. We check in on some controversial topics, including the transgender athletes in sport debate, where a new paper, a legal decision and an imminent IOC election are all in the spotlight, and finally, we briefly discuss Shelby Houlihan's own words about her doping defence in an interview with Letsrun.com.Show notesAs mentioned, Discourse is our VIP Community where you can share bicarb recipes, tales of fuel success, and a whole lot more! For this episode, Yvonne is joined by former professional rugby player and founder of the nutrition firm Whole Supp, Darren O'Reilly. Darren combined his experience of the positive impact good nutrition has on performance with Dr Brian Carson´s physiology knowledge to create a super easy to prepare supplement that provides great fuel for busy, always on the go people. He and Yvonne discuss his journey, and the role having a North Star and manifestation techniques played in enabling him to stay the course to bring his innovative Whole Supp product to market. They also talk about branding, growth, personal development, and much more. KEY TAKEAWAYS Having a North Star drives you forward regardless of what you are aiming for. Pay attention to the details, but don´t let perfectionism get in your way. If you are struggling to perfect something, keep going, you are closer than you think. Don´t waste energy getting upset about people competing with you, there is room for everyone. Own your mistakes. Accept that you have made them and learn from them. Extreme ownership is a habit anyone can build. Keeping in touch with what your product is going to do for your customers is a huge motivator. People have to trust you, to buy from you. The best way to build that trust is to be honest, authentic and most importantly create a highly effective product. You can reach a lot of people via social media, but your message will not resonate unless you already know your customers really well. Meeting your customers face to face is the best way to understand them. Face to face contact moves the needle, it is great for your brand and creates highly effective marketing material. Don´t be too rigid about your business plan. Often, business opportunities you never thought of will turn out to generate the most profit. Create positive habits for yourself. Build them into your day. BEST MOMENTS “So, everything in our product has a meaningful impact on the body.” “Choosing a manufacturer is a really difficult thing. It's almost like dating. You kiss a lot of frogs before you find the right one.” “It´s more important to fail but learn from it, than not try.” “Real connections with real people with real customers moves the needle, and that kind of has a multiplier effect.” “When you open yourself up for criticism, you learn so much.” "If your foundations are strong, your potential is unlimited. We're able to help people with just getting that nutritional foundation when they're busy." “if you're curious enough and humble enough to listen, you're gonna learn a lot.” “Visualising - see it all the time. Midlife is often seen as a point of no return for health, but it could be the perfect moment to make a radical change. New research suggests that your gut microbiome holds the key to aging well, protecting you from chronic disease, and even reversing some of the damage from years of poor diet and stress. Few people understand this better than Rich Roll, who went from an overweight, junk-food-addicted workaholic to one of the world's fittest men - all after the age of 40. Now a plant-fuelled ultramarathoner and bestselling author, Rich shares the wake-up call that forced him to transform his life. He's joined by Professor Tim Spector, one of the world's top 100 most cited scientists and professor of epidemiology at King's College London, who explains why gut health becomes even more important as we age - and how small changes to diet, movement, and daily habits can have an outsized impact later in life.
The growth of women's football in Morocco has seen more girls taking up the sport. The evidence of this can be seen in how many young girls play the beautiful game in their neighbourhoods, in the streets. It's something which would not have happened 20 years ago. The success of women's football there has also been reflected in the packed stadiums and the rising number of people watching the women's national team- the Atlas Lionesses- on television. They are also the first North African and Arab squad to qualify for the Women's World Cup. So what's behind the growth in women's football in Morocco? In today's Africa Daily, Alan Kasujja speaks to 15 year old Imane on why she decided to play football, Atlas Lioness forward Rosella Ayane and Meskerem Tadesse Goshime, the Confederation of African Football's head of women's football.
The Telegraph has revealed that a family of six Palestinians seeking to flee Gaza has been granted the right to live in the UK using a scheme meant for Ukrainian refugees. The Home Office initially rejected their application, but a judge overruled the decision as it breached their rights under the ECHR.It is an immigration tribunal decision which comes hot on the heels of the Albanian criminal whose deportation was halted in part because of his son's distaste for foreign chicken nuggets.Kamal and Camilla ask whether this ruling will open the floodgates for mass migration, and pose the question - who is really in control of our borders, Parliament or the judiciary? They also reflect on Kemi Badenoch's performance at Prime Minister's Questions this lunchtime, as the Tory leader took the chance to grill Keir Starmer on the decision to allow the Gazan family to settle here.Read: Court gives Gazans right to settle in UKThe best (and worst) Home Counties, ranked and ratedProducer: Lilian FawcettSenior Producer: John CadiganPlanning Editor: Venetia RaineyExecutive Producer: Louisa WellsSocial Media Producer: Rachel DuffyVideo Editor: Valerie BrowneEditor: Camilla TomineyOriginal music by Goss Studio Hosted on Acast. The Elephant In The Room Property Podcast | Inside Australian Real Estate
Why are so many residential investors making the leap into commercial real estate? That’s the big question we unpack in this episode with Vanessa Rader from Ray White Research. With over 25 years of experience across residential, commercial, and niche property markets, Vanessa offers an expert perspective on this growing trend and its implications for investors. One of the standout moments in our chat is how Vanessa highlights the key distinctions between residential and commercial investments. While residential decisions often hinge on emotion, commercial real estate is all about strategy and crunching the numbers. It’s no wonder smaller commercial investments are becoming a go-to option for residential investors seeking higher returns or a more hands-off experience. We also dig into the performance of various commercial sectors. Industrial spaces are leading the charge, fueled by booming demand from logistics and e-commerce. Retail, surprisingly, is holding steady in prime areas, while office spaces continue to grapple with shifting workplace trends. Of course, it’s not without its challenges. We talk about the risks, such as the critical importance of securing reliable tenants and navigating market fluctuations. While the potential returns are tempting, this episode is a reminder that success in commercial property requires knowledge, preparation, and a clear strategy. Episode Highlights: 00:00 - Introduction 00:57 - Who is Vanessa Rader? 01:52 - What is it about the commercial real estate sector that lights Vanessa up 03:25 - Overview of the different sectors and price points in commercial real estate 08:11 - Which areas of commercial real estate are particularly strong at the moment? 15:49 - Which areas of commercial real estate are underperforming 17:08 - How is the office space sector evolving, and what’s next? 23:58 - Is there a reimagining or repurposing of office spaces occurring? 28:15 - What was the catalyst for the shift in leasing preferences for office spaces? 30:44 - What trends are emerging in the owner-occupied commercial space? 34:06 - Are investors leaving residential for commercial, or exiting property altogether? 43:32 - Are there emerging sectors in the smaller market we’ve overlooked? 47:08 - Vanessa Rader’s property dumbo About Our Guest: Vanessa Rader, Head of Research at Ray White Group, is a leading Australian property expert with over 25 years of experience across commercial, residential, and niche markets. "It's not your typical ‘white Christmas' where you're sitting around sipping hot cocoa with family. No… it's back-to-back parties, beach parties, pool parties, concerts featuring global superstars. That's what Detty December is!" This festive season, known as Detty December, transforms Lagos and Accra into buzzing hubs of celebration. It's a time when members of the diaspora, jokingly called IJGBs (I Just Got Back), return home to reconnect with family, indulge in the energy of West Africa, and join the festivities. Over the years, Detty December has grown into a global phenomenon, celebrated for its electric vibe and unforgettable memories. However with inflation rising and living costs soaring, how will 2024's Detty December unfold- will locals feel excluded, or can they benefit from the boom in tourism? Alan Kasujja explores the energy, culture, and questions surrounding this year's festivities with guests Michael Sonariwo, Akosua Shirley, and Jola Ayeye.
A warning to listeners: The following conversation references suicide, suicidality, and content that is inappropriate for young listeners. Even before the pandemic, there was an increasing awareness of the decline in mental health of children and young adults. Researchers and scientists have talked and written about rising levels of anxiety in today’s youth, and many have pointed to the pervasiveness of smartphones and social media, which have exponentially magnified concerns for the mental well being of a generation. Andrew Solomon, writer and professor of clinical psychology at Columbia University Medical Center, recently penned an article for The New Yorker titled “Has Social Media Fuelled a Teen-Suicide Crisis? ” In his piece, Soloman investigates what’s fuelling the the spike in suicide among Americans between the ages of ten and twenty-four. Quoting the work of Dr. Judith Edersheim at Harvard, Solomon says: “It’s like taking little children and putting them in an all night casino where they serve chocolate flavored bourbon. It's designed to be addictive, it is addictive and that addiction has devastating consequences.” Solomon interviews dozens of parents and shares the poignant and heart wrenching accounts of how so many of them were totally unaware of the online world in which their children were living. As one father who had lost his son to suicide explained to Solomon, “I was, I thought, such a good father. I checked around the house every night. I locked the doors. I made sure my children were safe. I didn't know that the lion was already inside the house.” Solomon further explains that this all has so much to do with the insidious nature of the algorithms, which feed not on vulnerabilities, but bring about a sense of normalization. If a kid looks at content about being a little depressed, Solomon tells us that “then they start showing you people who are more depressed. “They want to hook you,” he continues, “what they send you has to gradually become more extreme and eventually you escalate to people who are killing themselves on camera and posting it on social media platforms while they are doing it.” Parents, educators and lawmakers are working hard to bring attention to this; some argue that social media is only “only one layer” in the crisis. Lawsuits have made their way to the Supreme Court but so far, Solomon informs us: “The Supreme Court has refused to overturn Section 230. The legislative work that was supposed to have an effect on placing constraints on the operations of social media companies, have all got stuck in committee, despite the ‘bipartisan agreement that there need to be restraints.’” Solomon advises parents to educate themselves and talk to their kids, though inevitably the younger generation who has grown up with technology is going to be ahead of the game. “The idea of being able to monitor all of what your children are doing is a ludicrous fantasy,” Solomon admits. “So I think that's all not very effective, but you can at least be aware and talk to your children.” Delve deeper into life, philosophy, and what makes us human by joining the Life Examined discussion group on Facebook.
