A few days ago, I came across a term – Hurried child syndrome. Have you heard about it? Psychologist Dr. David Elkind first discussed this term in his book The Hurried Child. As parents, we have a list of words or phrases we should and shouldn't use. Good job, well done, bravo, you can do it, and give your best are a few from the list. Along with this, there is one more word that parents use all the time – “Hurry up.” Do you agree? What are your thoughts about these words? I feel “hurry up” is more of a command than just two words. In this episode, we will talk about HSC, how do we know if the child is experiencing HSC, if saying hurry up to your child good or bad and what are the few to avoid saying it. The Gift Of Rest | Advice For The Hurried Life | Encounter Church by Encounter Church
Justin and Kylie reflect on a broken promise many families made during COVID — to never return to the rushed, overscheduled lives we previously lived. They explore the concept of "Hurried Child Syndrome," first introduced by Dr. David Elkind, and discuss the troubling impacts of pushing children to grow up too fast. With honesty and humor, they offer practical insights and three powerful strategies to help families slow down and reclaim childhood. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE:"The number one way to unhurry childhood is to literally slow it down so the kids can be playing — especially with other kids, especially in unstructured activities." KEY INSIGHTS FOR PARENTS: Hurried Childhood Defined: Accelerated academics, overscheduling, early exposure to adult issues, and perfectionist pressures can rob children of their childhood. Mental Health Impact: Being hurried can lead to anxiety, depression, low resilience, and feelings of unworthiness. The Competitive Parenting Trap: Fear of children falling behind — academically or socially — often drives overscheduling. Unstructured Play is Crucial: It builds cognitive, social, and emotional development and is one of the best antidotes to a hurried life. Support, Don’t Script, Their Dreams: Children thrive when they pursue self-determined goals — not the aspirations imposed by well-meaning parents. Balance is Everything: A well-paced schedule with space for rest and connection supports wellbeing for both kids and parents. RESOURCES MENTIONED: Dr. David Elkind's research on Hurried Child Syndrome Interview with Olympic swimmer Emma McKeon (available on a previous Happy Families Podcast episode) The book “Parental Guidance” (referenced in Season 1) ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Prioritise Play: Make time for unstructured, child-led play — ideally with other children and without adult direction. Let Kids Lead: Encourage your children to set their own goals based on their passions and strengths. Create a Balanced Schedule: Limit extracurriculars and protect time for rest, relationships, and real connection. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Would you stop to help someone in need if you were running late? That's the challenging question at the heart of today's reflection on the Good Samaritan parable. We explore a fascinating experiment conducted by a seminary professor who tested his students' compassion while they rushed to preach sermons about helping others. The results were both surprising and convicting—when pressed for time, even these future spiritual leaders walked past someone clearly in need of assistance. We would love to hear your comments. The Best Me Week Four - How to Live Un-Hurried by Pastor Troy Powell
If you could describe Jesus in one word, what would it be? For Dallas Willard, pastor and author, this word is relaxed. Jesus lives slow and relaxed, much different from our hurried and anxiety driven world. Hurry is the greatest threat to our spiritual growth. It hinders our ability to hear from God, build deep connections with friends, and eventually leads to a dry and exhausted soul. Join us as we look at how we can step into the unhurried and relaxed pace of Jesus!
Scott Hubbard | Sometimes, the solution to our spiritual struggles is less spiritual than we thought. God's world, and not just his word, may hold the remedy we need.
At least seven federal prosecutors resigned rather than comply with an order to dismiss corruption charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams — an unprecedented exodus that includes veteran lawyers with deep conservative credentials. Donald Trump could be poised to pull back the curtain on UFOs, according to an expert. The office is back: The share of people who reported working mostly in-person doubled in 2024 from the previous year, according to a survey from McKinsey released Friday morning. “Hurried child syndrome,” as it's called, happens when a busy schedule – with school, extracurriculars, and family obligations – turns into a source of stress and anxiety for children.

Let us go to the sanctuary of the Lord; let us worship at the footstool of his throne. (Psalm 132:7 NLT) The Bible doesn't tell us much about the boyhood years of Jesus. But it does give us an instance where Mary and Joseph went to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration, and they took twelve-year-old Jesus with them. Then they made the journey back home. In those days, the men and women traveled separately. Joseph thought that Jesus was with Mary. And Mary thought that Jesus was with Joseph. But then they realized they had lost Jesus. So, they frantically made their way back to Jerusalem. They found Him in the temple three days later, where He was speaking with the elders. Jesus said to them, “Didn't you know that I must be in my Father's house?” (Luke 2:49 NLT). Imagine the panicked couple running around town, asking people if they had seen their son. We can become so busy, especially at this time of year, that we don't have time for God. We can be so busy celebrating Christmas that we lose Jesus. We string the lights, trim the tree, and buy the gifts. And during all this busyness, we can forget all about the Lord. We can lose Jesus just like Mary and Joseph did. We Americans are so busy. You could write on our tombstones, “Hurried. Worried. Buried.” We're always rushing about, and that is more evident at Christmas than at any other time of year. Lines are long and tempers are short. We think Christmas will bring us some measure of happiness. But after so much buildup, Christmas can be a letdown. Then there is the mess and cleaning up. Soon the bills start arriving, and reality kicks in. Experts tell us that calls to psychiatrists and emergency rooms increase during this time of year. That is because Christmas can't measure up to its romanticized image. So many of us say, “I would like to make time for God, but I am just so busy. I work too hard and don't have any time in my schedule. I would like to go to church, but there just isn't time for that. I would like to read my Bible, but I just can't find the time.” However, we find time for what is important to us. It seems the only place where there ever was room for Jesus was on a cross where He died for the sins of the world. Ironically, Jesus Himself said, “There is more than enough room in my Father's home” (John 14:2 NLT). We don't have room for Him, but He has many rooms for us. Jesus took His place in a manger so that we could have a home in Heaven. So, let's forget about the clutter and hype and replace it with the Christ of Christmas. Then it will be great. It is not about Christmas presents; it is about His presence in our lives. The message of the season is not “let it snow” or “let us shop.” It is “let us worship.” If we will focus on that, then Christmas will be a blessed time for us. — Listen to the Greg Laurie Podcast Become a Harvest PartnerSupport the show: https://harvest.org/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sign-up for my free 20-day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com--Series: Work in HeavenDevotional: 3 of 5Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on…for their deeds will follow them. (Revelation 14:13)A fortune teller once told Walt Disney that he would die on his birthday before he turned thirty-five. As Disney biographer Bob Thomas explains, “the prediction had a profound effect on him…he seemed to be in a race against time to accomplish all the work he wanted to do.” Can you relate to Walt Disney? Of feeling like time is speeding up and the drumbeat of hurry only seems to be growing louder? I used to feel that burden far more than I do today. What has God used to free me? Biblical truths about work on the New Earth in general and this one in particular: We can expect some continuity between our work now and our work on the New Earth. What kinds of continuity? At least these two. First, there will be some continuity in what we work with as Isaiah 60 promises that some of the best cultural goods from this life will miraculously be resurrected in the next one. The New Earth is not a return to the Stone Age. We can expect the very best work of all time as our starting point. Second, there may be some continuity in our occupations on the New Earth. Revelation 14:13 says, “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on…for their deeds will follow them.” Pastor John Mark Comer points out that the Greek word for “deeds” here can also mean “occupation.” In other words, you may be working today at the craft God intends for you to develop for his glory for eternity! (If that sounds terrible to you, don't miss next week's devotional.)What should our response be to this promise of continuity between our work now and then? A remarkable lack of hurry today. This has been one of the most profound and surprising benefits of meditating on the promise of work on the New Earth personally. I am far less hurried than I used to be. I am at peace with the fact that I (and you) will die with unfinished symphonies. Because I know that if the things on my to-do list are on God's to-do list, he will either 1) choose someone else to complete that work, 2) complete the work on his own, or 3) bless me with the opportunity to finish the work when I rise from the nap that is death.I pray that as you meditate on these biblical truths, you will experience that same peace and lack of hurry in your own work today!

On countless American gravestones this epitaph could be written: Hurried, Worried, Buried. What a sad way to live! Fear, anxiety, and distress have literally become part of our national culture. Odd, isn't it? Though we have such abundance in this country, most don't experience abundant life—especially as Jesus described it. Sure, everyone has his or her share of trouble and anxieties, but let's consider one of the greatest gifts Jesus gives to followers—the gift of peace!

In 2024, church leaders will be sifted left and right. Mature from immature. Wise from foolish. Substantial from surface level. This I know – the most effective leaders (and the ones worth following) will draw a line in the sand and put a full stop to accepting a rushed, cluttered, and constricted life. They will reject speed, crowds, and noise in favor of a graceful, unrushed way of life. I call this lifestyle "spaciousness". It's one of the secret weapons of true spiritual mothers and fathers of the faith. On today's podcast, I explore the theme of spaciousness, making applications for how leaders can resist the way of the world, and decisively shift into a new way of life with Jesus.

HT1698 - Take Your Time Perhaps this is more about me than anything like a general principle, but I just can't hurry when I'm making art. Hurried art is messy art. I have to allow time or I just end up disappointed.
We live in a world that tells us that doing more and staying busy are hallmarks of success. Having down time or relaxing is sometimes perceived as possessing a poor work ethic or being lazy. Most of us feel like we have to fill our schedules with work — sometimes multiple jobs — to keep up with the rat race of "moving up" in the world. For many Millennials and Gen Zers, it's a palpable feeling of not being able to break through the glass ceiling of the current economic and financial state to achieve some of life's milestones: getting married, having children and buying a house. We are weary. We need rest. Yet we are always looking forward, ready to do the next thing to keep up on the hamster wheel. So how do we stay present? Adam Ramsey's book, "Faithfully Present: Embracing the Limits of Where and When God Has You," is the perfect guide for how to do that. Adam joins the show this week to talk about his book and drops so much wisdom on contentment, fighting hustle culture and being present. You can connect with Adam on Instagram @adamramsey_. During our July sabbatical this year, Gem and I made some significant space for personal retreat that we've felt bringing fresh energy, creativity, and vision to the work to which we've now returned. We enjoyed three days at a retreat house not far from Lassen Volcanic National Park in the northeast corner of California. We then spent three days at a Trappist monastery not far from the first retreat center. In those days, God met with us in that quiet stillness. I wonder what your own experience of retreat has been. When I think of my years as a young Christian, I remember participating in and then leading a whole lot of youth and young adult retreats in the church. They were exciting and fun. But I would have to say those retreats were more hurried than unhurried. I've simply come to believe that this approach to retreats often misses the gift of uncluttered space and unhurried time with God that could be included, maybe even made the heart of retreat time like this. I'm looking forward to sharing more about this today. _________________________________________________________Connect with Alan on LinkedIn or learn more about Unhurried Living programs on their website.
