The New Orleans Saints claimed a statement win in Foxborough against the New England Patriots, but lost a yet another key player for extended time after star tackle Terron Armstead suffered an elbow injury. Armstead is expected to miss three to six weeks and thus could go to injured reserve. Expect James Hurst to step into his role in his stead. While the Saints may be adding another name to IR, five players are now eligible to return, depending on their injury recovery. Wil Lutz and Tre'Quan Smith could be two important players making their way back to the active roster in the coming weeks. Nick Vannet, Will Clapp, and Ken Crawley could all be of great value as well. The Saints are finally back in the Big Easy and excited to get back to their long-awaited Caesars Superdome opener. This will be the first fully-attended New Orleans Saints game since the January 5th, 2020 playoff exit against the Minnesota Vikings. The Who Dat Nation is ready to make some noise and a top-5 NFL defense will be ready for their help. The Saints knocked the Patriots down some key efficiency rankings on the offensive side. However, the Saints and Giants are evenly matched on offensive efficiency so for this season. The difference? The Saints will be facing the Giants 28th ranked defense in terms of efficiency while New York may struggle to topple the 2nd ranked unit in New Orleans. This could be a good opportunity for the Saints offense to kick into gear. But the biggest reason for this highly ranked Saints team comes down to the stars on the defense. Marshon Lattimore, Demario Davis, Marcus Williams, and others have led the way to start the season allowing only 14 points per game.Follow Ross on Twitter @RossJacksonNOLASupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Jeff, Jason, Scott, and Gunn talk about the near-perfect performance of Jameis Winston compared to the unimpressive display from Taysom Hill (just like every other podcast this week). But, we also dive into the Saints defense, coaching staff impact, and Ken Crawley!
The New Orleans Saints had to make five roster moves in order to be compliant with the NFL's 80-man roster limit before Tuesday afternoon. They moved three players, DL Jalen Dalton, OL Ethan Greenidge, and CB Brian Poole to injured reserve while waiving punter Nolan Cooney and waived-injured LB Marcus Willoughby. But while there are 80 players on the Saints' roster, several players continue to be unavailable like WR Tre'Quan Smith and rookie edge rusher Payton Turner While their injuries are not expected to be serious, their absences combined with recent injuries to Ken Crawley and Adam Trautman feel a bit precarious. However, rookie LB Pete Werner is back in action at practice and some better news than expected in regards to Marshon Lattimore's offseason arrest may be on the way. WWL-TV Sports Director Doug Mouton joins Locked On Saints host Ross Jackson to discuss whether or not Jameis Winston did enough to win the QB battle on Monday night, how special Marquez Callaway's offseason has been, and the unique opportunity that awaits rookie corner Paulson Adebo. All signs pointed to this Monday's matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars being a pivotal point in the New Orleans Saints quarterback battle between Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston. Now, according to reports, it seems all but confirmed that the team would like to settle this competition before the preseason Week 3 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. Here's what each Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill will need to do to leave no doubt in their claim to the starting position. On offense, the New Orleans Saints won't just be looking at the QB battle, the wide receivers the signal callers will be throwing to are in flux, the running backs behind them are fighting for positioning behind NFL top-100 player Alvin Kamara, and the offensive line will be looking to solidify its second unit while the rest of the NFL struggles to find depth. On defense, the Saints will look to figure out their second cornerback opposite Marshon Lattimore. Paulson Adebo and Ken Crawley battle it out for one for the most premier positions on the team. Meanwhile, Zack Baun hopes to follow up an impressive performance in the first preseason game and training camp with another standout outing. Same for Marcus Davenport, who is turning heads this offseason.Follow Ross on Twitter @RossJacksonNOLASupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Camp Day 16 notes have some standout performances from new and returning players. Newly signed WR Kevin White catches a touchdown pass in his first day, Tre'Quan Smith makes several plays in his return, and Marcus Williams walks off with another camp interception. Meanwhile, each Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill continue their up and down performances. The New Orleans Saints will have some tough decisions to make as they are set to make another five-player cut after Monday's matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. But the next week, they'll be looking to get down to the regular season 53-man roster. On the offensive side, Tony Jones Jr. threatens veteran running backs Latavius Murray and Devonta Freeman for a spot. The wide receiver room continues to shed players and add new players. Kevin White tries to revitalize his career with Sean Payton. On the defensive side, the Saints' linebacker unit has gone from massive concern to one of the team's most solid units. Chase Hansen and Andrew Dowell fight for spots behind Demario Davis, Kwon Alexander, Zack Baun and more. Meanwhile the cornerback spot opposite Marshon Lattimore still hangs in the balance. Ken Crawley and Paulson Adebo look like the most logical choices, however new faces and young players still need to fill out the depth. The interior defensive line took some bumps and bruises over the offseason, and the players that are filling the gap are only partially those we expected as Jalen Dalton and Christian Ringo continue to ascend and Shy Tuttle heads down the camp depth chart. Breaking down the New Orleans Saints first unofficial depth chart released ahead of their first NFL preseason matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. The early, unofficial poll positions give some idea of what the Saints preseason roster could look like.Starting with the offensive skill positions, no decisions yet at quarterback, Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston still yet to be named Saturday's starter. Wide receiver, running back, and right end have some interesting nuances including where Juwan Johnson is listed among the big pass-catchers.When it comes to the trenches, there are very few surprises on the offensive line with one of the top units in the NFL. However, the interior defensive line has generated much curiosity over the offseason, and this depth chart is no exception with the placement of Shy Tuttle. On the defense, some of the biggest questions are looming. Who will start next to Demario Davis? How soon will Kwon Alexander be healthy and can he eclipse the young talent that's stood out on Airline Drive? And of course, which corner will start next to Marshon Lattimore? A quick look at the depth chart gives you a good idea of what's expected at corner with Paulson Adebo, Brian Poole, Prince Amukamara, and Ken Crawley all as options unless another corner is added before the regular season begins. The unofficial depth chart: https://twitter.com/nick_underhill/status/1426333902856130561?s=20Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Saints Podcast on these platforms…

Plus more news you need to know around Saints camp. The New Orleans Saints are now just about two weeks through camp and the quarterback competition is still a tight one. On Today's Locked On Saints, Ross Jackson breaks down where each position of need is, and who has been performing well in those important roles. From Paulson Adebo and Ken Crawley to Payton Turner and Marcus Davenport, so many young players continue to make their names names. Even though the QB battle is taking tine to separate, the Saints have some areas where they have been performing above expectation. One of those spots is the cornerback position where many like to diminish due to the available wide receivers. Here's why diminishing the corners on their matchups isn't an accurate depiction of the traits and positive play the DBs have shown. Before we get to the Browns game, the big news out of camp is the Saints are shopping Delvin Breaux. Ralph explains why it's likely Breaux is done as a Saint. Andrew tries to figure out what happens at crorner post Breaux. Ignore the score in Cleveland, the Saints showed a lot of positives against the Browns. On offense Alvin Kamara looked fantastic and Tommy Lee Lewis was doing fun stuff. On defense, the Saints defensive line shut down the Cleveland running game. Kikaha and Onyemata flashed incredible potential. Andrew and Ralph want to talk about Ken Crawley and why he played better than fans think and why he proves practice matters. Atlanta's backfield tag-team of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman combined for 296 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Falcons to a 45-32 shootout victory over the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. Here's what we learned: 1. Matt Ryan is flourishing in his second season under play-caller Kyle Shanahan, leading the league in yards per attempt (9.4) and passer rating (119.0), while ranking near the top in completion percentage and first-down efficiency. Although ESPN analyst Jon Gruden attributed the dramatic improvement to mechanical tweaks and Ryan's mastery of the offense, it's hard to ignore the influx of speed and playmaking ability with a healthy Tevin Coleman and the new wideout trio of Mohamed Sanu, Aldrick Robinson and Taylor Gabriel complementing All-Pro Julio Jones. 2. The 2015 Saints defense produced the worst metrics Football Outsiders has recorded going back to the start of the 21st century. Minus a half-dozen starters from the projected opening-day lineup, they had no chance of containing Ryan's offensive attack. Among the options to choose as emblematic of New Orleans' undermanned defense: undrafted rookie cornerback Ken Crawley trying in vain to hang with Julio Jones on an end-zone fade and former Pro Bowl safety Jairus Byrd collapsing into a heap on separate sharp cuts from Devonta Freeman. 3. Much to the bane of fantasy footballers, the Freeman-Coleman committee attack isn't going away. Nor should it. Between Coleman's game-breaking speed to the edge and Freeman's uncanny agility in tight spaces, Shanahan can keep defenses guessing in pick-your-poison fashion. Atlanta's committee is poised to overtake the 2015 Tampa Bay duo of Doug Martin and Charles Sims as the most effective complementary tandem in the league. If David Johnson has represented a tier of his own in September with Adrian Peterson injured and Le'Veon Bell suspended, Freeman isn't far behind. His performance the past two weeks has been All-Pro caliber.
