Things Discussed: Craig Ross introduces the MGoBlog Rub Some Dirt On It player of the week. What's the offense look like with Bryce? Not a spread, some RPO, some downfield passing, most of that off play-action. Opponents are going to bring safeties down—Oklahoma runs a Venables defense that wants to attack, so you have to punish that. Remember 2021 Georgia when JJ came in? He had some simple reads, but things opened up because he could physically get certain types of throws further downfield, increased the spacing between receivers. RPOs? Chip Lindsey's job is to make what you do work, not rewrite the offensive script. There will be tag RPOs where the read is more of a "run-unless"—it's not going to be like Stanford's long mesh where the read is the point. It's a check on bad behavior so they can do their thing, which is run off-tackle. Sam: Program philosophy isn't to allow the defense to set what you're going to do. Brian wants to see Bredeson used on those Aaron Shea dumpoffs more often because you freak out when he's coming your way. Mikey Keene? He's got a shoulder injury. You don't get to choose when the injury is healed; he will probably be the QB2 when he's back. Brady Norton: Not like last year. If they were down to two RGs and they were Efobi and Hattar and Norton won it would concern us, but it was Efobi-Norton two weeks ago. Concern is left tackle; they were talking about replacing Link with a true freshman before Babalola got hurt. Evan Link will start, Blake Frazier will play; Blake has to prove he's durable because he's coming off a knee injury, and he has to be stronger in the run game because he's 290-something. If Link isn't clear of Frazier right now that's an issue. DT depth chart: People were surprised that Trey Pierce was ahead of Damon Payne, but we've been saying that all offseason. You want that: Trey has eligibility next year and showed some talent. Opening weened for CFB: What's up with Ohio State and their new coordinators? Probably going to be fine with Hartline because he will just say throw it to Jeremiah Smith and…yeah that works. Matt Patricia has two great players in the back-seven but they are going to be just okay at D-tackle (I like the end they picked up from UNC). Maybe Matt Patricia is here to bottom out the culture, because as soon as he left Detroit and Philadelphia those locker rooms become two of the best in the NFL. Quick New Mexico preview: They have a 246 pound defensive tackle and a backfooting QB who's going to punt it up to a former Iowa receiver that might be injured.

Will Saturday be another story of the "farm kids" from South Dakota being underestimated by a bunch of thoroughbred athletes from California? The Dan Jackson Era and Chase Mason era at South Dakota State opens with a likely sold-out home game against Sacramento State, a 3-9 team from last year with over 50 FBS transfers and a brand new coach that is rated No. 15 in the preseason polls. With so many new starters on each side, it is tough to accurately predict how the game may unfold, but Sioux Falls Live sports editor and decade-long SDSU reporter Matt Zimmer takes a stab with Happy Hour host John Gaskins in a 74-minute chat over cocktails at Gateway Lounge. But Zim pulls from over 20 years of covering South Dakota college football teams who lock horns with talented rosters from talent-rich states like California, while also unveiling some new Jackrabbits FBS transfers you should expect to see and maybe shine on Saturday and all season long. What exactly can we expect, especially from SDSU's new starting quarterback, Chase Mason, who has undeniably supreme physical talent but has not played a full game as a starting signal caller in six years, back to his junior year in high school?Meanwhile, No. 4 South Dakota opens 2025 at FBS No. 22 Iowa State, who impressively finished a 24-21 prize fight win over No. 17 Kansas State in Ireland on Saturday. How much of a factor will jet lag from a trip to Ireland factor in USD's favor, not to mention this being a "sandwich" game for the Cyclones between rivals KSU and Iowa (next week)? What kind of upset threat can USD mount, with its own litany of transfer replacements but also with a guiding light in senior quarterback in Aidan Bouman, a former Cyclone with plenty to prove against his former team and NFL scouts?Plus, a glimpse into the "Washington State Jackrabbits," led by former SDSU coach Jimmy Rogers, who brought his staff and 16 players with him to the Palouse. The Cougars, who play Idaho on national television late Saturday, have shut down practices to the media after reported inner-team practice scuffles.Speaking of former Jacks, quarterback Mark Gronowski is Iowa's "Million Dollar Man" (or $2 Million Man, depending on who you believe). What should we expect of the former Walter Payton Award winner in the stacked Big Ten, and in what way will life be more different and difficult for him compared to the FCS?Then, there's No. 8 Alabama, led by former USF coach Kalen DeBoer, who starts his second season on the road at Florida State. Why should there be reason for the Crimson Tide to improve after their first four-loss season in 17 years? Finally, how much more secure should the Minnesota Vikings feel about their QB2 situation now that they dumped Sam Howell and made room for North Dakota State legend Carson Wentz, who joins his sixth NFL team in six years?

Send us a textThe Miami Dolphins kicked off their 2025 preseason with a 24-24 tie against the Chicago Bears — but it was a tale of two stories: a strong start from Tua Tagovailoa and big concerns about the backup quarterbacks.Tua played just one series but looked sharp, efficiently moving the offense down the field. Behind him, things got messy. Zach Wilson went 5-for-9 for 96 yards but couldn't find the end zone, while Quinn Ewers struggled badly, completing just 5-of-18 passes for 91 yards with two fumbles lost. The performance has left Dolphins fans asking: is there a QB2 crisis in Miami? In this episode, we break down every key moment from the Dolphins vs Bears preseason opener — from Tua's crisp drive to the turnovers and stalled drives that followed. Rod Villagomez and Munaf Manji talk NFL fantasy football AFC east position battles. The AFC East may not boast the flashiest fantasy options, but its positional battles could provide league-winning value for savvy managers. Hosts Munaf Manji and Rod Villagomez dissected the division's key situations with a focus on deep-league stashes and late-round upside. In Buffalo, James Cook remains the lead back after averaging 4.9 yards per carry and scoring 18 touchdowns, but Munaf and Rod spotlighted Ray Davis, who logged 478 rushing and 189 receiving yards with six total touchdowns, as the preferred backup over Ty Johnson. The Bills' receiver room also offers intrigue: Khalil Shakir led with 120 targets for 995 yards and four touchdowns, but Keon Coleman, who had 578 yards and four scores as a rookie, was pegged for a breakout as he battles newcomer Joshua Palmer for the WR2 role. For Miami, the tight end room is unsettled after Jonnu Smith's departure, creating opportunities for Darren Waller, Pharaoh Brown or Julian Hill. At receiver, Munaf pushed Nick Westbrook-Akene, who tallied 497 yards and nine touchdowns on 60 targets, as a touchdown-dependent but intriguing flex option over Malik Washington, who managed 223 yards on 36 targets. In New York, the focus shifted to the WR3 battle between veteran Alan Lazard, who had 530 yards and six touchdowns, and rookie Arian Smith, a dynamic Georgia product with 817 collegiate yards and four touchdowns. Both hosts leaned toward Smith for long-term value while framing Justin Fields' season as a redemption tour in a relatively low-pressure environment, making him a viable QB2 with upside. In New England, Ramondre Stevenson's 14 career fumbles, half of which came last season, put him on thin ice, opening the door for rookie Trevion Henderson, a second-round pick from Ohio State, to carve out a meaningful role. Demario Douglas led Patriots receivers with 621 yards, but Munaf identified 6'4” veteran Mac Hollins, who scored five touchdowns last season, as a sneaky red-zone threat and deep sleeper, particularly if Stefon Diggs needs time to recover from his ACL injury. The episode concluded with a shared philosophy: these AFC East names may not headline drafts, but they are exactly the types of players who become early-season waiver-wire priorities. Drafting them late provides a strategic edge, especially in deeper leagues or superflex formats where depth and upside separate contenders from pretenders. As Munaf put it, these are the players “you might as well just pick up and hope for the best.” This breakdown of Buffalo's backfield, Miami's receiving depth, the Jets' WR3 competition, and New England's RB and WR rooms offers actionable insights for managers looking to squeeze value from one of the NFL's less-heralded divisions. Meanwhile, Abdul Carter was absolutely dominant, albeit against the second-team offensive line in a non-padded practice.Off the field, the Giants made waves by adding $3 million in incentives to Dexter Lawrence's contract. If he hits them all, he'll become the 4th highest-paid defensive tackle in the league—up from 10th. Sexy Dexy, when asked about the deal, stayed focused: “I just want to win. It'll all take care of itself.”Perhaps most controversially, the Giants launched a new influencer marketing initiative—but left out nearly all independent Giants content creators. The team claims PR alignment was a factor in the curation, but it raises big questions about how the franchise is supporting the fan-driven media that keeps the buzz alive year-round.From roster battles to media politics, this episode is packed with insight, opinions, and everything a diehard Giants fan wants to hear.
