The New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers are set to meet in Charlotte on Sunday. The deep ball is back for both teams with Jameis Winston and Sam Darnold, but their offensive lines will be tasked with keeping them clean. Robby Anderson, DJ Moore, and Terrace Marshall present unique challenges for the Saints secondary and Marcus Williams will be a key piece with Marshon Lattimore expected to miss this game after thumb surgery. Christian McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara are two of the best multi-purpose backs in the NFL and Sean Payton and Joe Brady have two of the best systems for their skillset. Those two will battle it out against two young and talented defenses, but injuries and unavailability could be the Saints' downfall in this NFC South matchup. However, Locked On Saints host Ross Jackson is confident head coach Sean Payton will once again come out swinging when backed up against a wall and facing unique adversity. Today's Locked On Saints breaks down the intricacies and large changes you'll see with Jameis Winston leading the New Orleans Saints offense. Will it be perfect? Probably not. But will it be exciting? Sure looks like it. Jameis Winston's role will be much different than Drew Brees's which affects the players around him. Erik McCoy making protection calls, Alvin Kamara perhaps more involved from the slot, and lots of play action, which asks more of the offensive line. Breaking it all down from a procedural vantage point to start the show. Then, looking at three major route concepts used in Sean Payton's offense and how they will look different not just with Jameis Winston but with Marquez Callaway, Tre'Quan Smith, and Deonte Harris. And soon with Michael Thomas. Then, host Ross Jackson closes out the show with a look at five storylines to watch before Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers. What will happen with Marshon Lattimore and Deonte Harris to start the season? Who will line up next to Demario Davis at linebacker? Will we get a look at a fully improved Jameis Winston? Five questions to we all seek the answers to as the Saints get ready for Week 1 NFL action. Follow Ross on Twitter @RossJacksonNOLA Important Links and how to help those affected by Hurricane Ida. New Orleans Saints Initial 53 Man Roster is Set, But Many Changes Are On The Way

NFL roster cuts have finally come and gone as teams set their initial 53-man rosters. For the New Orleans Saints, this is only the start of the team-building process ahead of week one against the Green Bay Packers. On today's Locked On Saints, Ross breaks down the initial 53 and the moves to expect going forward. Will the Saints send any of the multiple injured reserve candidates to IR like Adam Trautman, Nick Vannett, or Wil Lutz? Will they pursue a different kicker off of waivers with Jake Verity having been waived? The linebacker room is a little crowded with both Chase Hansen and Andrew McDowell making the cut, could that decision be indicative of Kwon Alexander's availability early in the season? So many questions to ask, but some good news to celebrate with fan-favorites Tony Jones Jr, and Juwan Johnson making the roster. Sean Payton also had some big news to drop on Tuesday. The Saints have officially announced Jameis Winston as their starting quarterback and what Taysom Hill's role will look like in the 2021 NFL season. The team also looks to heard to TCU, where many players have Louisiana roots, to continue their practice week in preparation to open their season as a currently undisclosed location with the Cesars Superdome currently not being an option. Marquez Callaway is on the verge of a special season and one area of Lil'Jordan Humphery's game continues to stand out. Callaway has the talent, opportunity, and the support of an offense that wants to attack deep. A perfect formula for a huge season following a very impressive offseason thus far. With Ken Crawley sidelined over the next couple of weeks, the door is left ajar for Paulson Adebo to possibly walk through. The outstanding play of safeties Marcus Williams, Malcolm Jenkins, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson (Ceedy Duce) help to alleviate potential concerns around a young CB2 and Adebo has the traits and physicality to step up. New Orleans Saints' Jameis Winston Passed QB Test With More Than Just Arm Strength

The New Orleans Saints had to make five roster moves in order to be compliant with the NFL's 80-man roster limit before Tuesday afternoon. They moved three players, DL Jalen Dalton, OL Ethan Greenidge, and CB Brian Poole to injured reserve while waiving punter Nolan Cooney and waived-injured LB Marcus Willoughby. But while there are 80 players on the Saints' roster, several players continue to be unavailable like WR Tre'Quan Smith and rookie edge rusher Payton Turner While their injuries are not expected to be serious, their absences combined with recent injuries to Ken Crawley and Adam Trautman feel a bit precarious. However, rookie LB Pete Werner is back in action at practice and some better news than expected in regards to Marshon Lattimore's offseason arrest may be on the way. WWL-TV Sports Director Doug Mouton joins Locked On Saints host Ross Jackson to discuss whether or not Jameis Winston did enough to win the QB battle on Monday night, how special Marquez Callaway's offseason has been, and the unique opportunity that awaits rookie corner Paulson Adebo. Jameis Winston Should Win New Orleans Saints Quarterback Battle With Huge Performance

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2021 31:01

The New Orleans Saints quarterback battle has been raging all offseason and it finally looks like there might be a winner. Though head coach Sean Payton was reluctant to name a starter in the Big Easy following the Saints' 23-21 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, there was one performance that could not be denied on Monday night. Jameis Winston put on a show with the help of second-year receiver Marquez Callaway to the tune of two touchdown connections. Winston was efficient throwing 9/10 for 123 yards as well. Meanwhile, Taysom Hill looked to struggle until showing a little bit more comfort in a late hurry-up game situation. Taysom Hill added a touchdown of his own, but it might have been too little too late. While the quarterbacks battled it out, a key piece of the Saints offense was hurt and could miss time. Saints tight end Adam Trautman was carted off the field with an apparent foot or ankle injury. X-rays came back negative, but a Tuesday MRI will reveal more information. Locked On Saints host Ross Jackson also breaks down what performances stood out on Monday night for better or for worse. Follow Ross on Twitter @RossJacksonNOLA Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! New Orleans Saints Want to Choose Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill After Jacksonville Jaguars Matchup

All signs pointed to this Monday's matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars being a pivotal point in the New Orleans Saints quarterback battle between Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston. Now, according to reports, it seems all but confirmed that the team would like to settle this competition before the preseason Week 3 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. Here's what each Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill will need to do to leave no doubt in their claim to the starting position. On offense, the New Orleans Saints won't just be looking at the QB battle, the wide receivers the signal callers will be throwing to are in flux, the running backs behind them are fighting for positioning behind NFL top-100 player Alvin Kamara, and the offensive line will be looking to solidify its second unit while the rest of the NFL struggles to find depth. On defense, the Saints will look to figure out their second cornerback opposite Marshon Lattimore. Paulson Adebo and Ken Crawley battle it out for one for the most premier positions on the team. Meanwhile, Zack Baun hopes to follow up an impressive performance in the first preseason game and training camp with another standout outing. Same for Marcus Davenport, who is turning heads this offseason. Follow Ross on Twitter @RossJacksonNOLA Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! On today's Locked On Saints, host Ross Jackson knows how important it is for the leading actor to be on stage for a final dress rehearsal. If the New Orleans Saints truly intend to treat the third preseason game this year as they would in a four-game preseason, they should have their starting quarterback selected, even if only internally in time for his final rehearsal. The playbook, the communication, and the success of the team could be better off with a clear vision as soon as possible. Then, Ross takes questions from the Locked On Saints Facebook Group and YouTube comments. The Saints still don't have a kicker, the production of the defensive line shouldn't make you worry about the offensive line, the biggest surprises of camp, the biggest disappointment, and why UDFA rookie has the best chance to make the Saints' roster are all discussed along with much more. New Orleans Saints 53-Man Roster Projection Post-Preseason Week 1 | Marcus Williams's Next Contract

Camp Day 16 notes have some standout performances from new and returning players. Newly signed WR Kevin White catches a touchdown pass in his first day, Tre'Quan Smith makes several plays in his return, and Marcus Williams walks off with another camp interception. Meanwhile, each Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill continue their up and down performances. The New Orleans Saints will have some tough decisions to make as they are set to make another five-player cut after Monday's matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. But the next week, they'll be looking to get down to the regular season 53-man roster. On the offensive side, Tony Jones Jr. threatens veteran running backs Latavius Murray and Devonta Freeman for a spot. The wide receiver room continues to shed players and add new players. Kevin White tries to revitalize his career with Sean Payton. On the defensive side, the Saints' linebacker unit has gone from massive concern to one of the team's most solid units. Chase Hansen and Andrew Dowell fight for spots behind Demario Davis, Kwon Alexander, Zack Baun and more. Meanwhile the cornerback spot opposite Marshon Lattimore still hangs in the balance. Ken Crawley and Paulson Adebo look like the most logical choices, however new faces and young players still need to fill out the depth. The interior defensive line took some bumps and bruises over the offseason, and the players that are filling the gap are only partially those we expected as Jalen Dalton and Christian Ringo continue to ascend and Shy Tuttle heads down the camp depth chart. Updating the New Orleans Saints 53-Man Roster Projection After Roster Cuts

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 17, 2021 27:07

The New Orleans Saints wasted no time getting their roster cut down to the league-required 85-man roster. The had reportedly already made all of their cuts before their Sunday practice including one surprise move the were forced to make, which re-opens another big hole at kicker. Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill saw similar numbers of opportunities (passes thrown and snaps taken) on Saturday. That trend didn't change when personnel groupings are broken down. But with a look at Ian Book's personnel frequency shows exactly what the Saints wanted to use for their evaluation of the rookie QB. WR turned TE Juwan Johnson put on an impressive show when he was the only tight end on the field, Marquez Callaway made the plays a #1 should make, and Tony Jones Jr. got a little help from his friends. Updating a 53-man roster projection after the handful of roster cuts and Saturday's action gives way to Tony Jone Jr, Easop Winston, and Chase Hansen who all impressed. But the fate of Devonta Freeman and Latavius Murray may hang in the balance come the 53-man trim down. Follow Ross on Twitter @RossJacksonNOLA Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The New Orleans Saints drop their first preseason game to the Baltimore Ravens 17-14 on the back of six turnovers. While the score doesn't mean much, the play of some of the young stars absolutely does. Still not much separation between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill, though one led more successful drives. Ian Book struggles and the running back room is in for a busy Sunday night workout after committing three fumbles. On the offensive side, WR Marques Callaway, RB Tony Jones Jr., TE Juwan Johnson, and offensive lineman Cesar Ruiz all stood out with successful days. But it was perhaps Zack Baun who surprised the most with a remarkable first outing after finally having an offseason to work on his transition to off-ball linebacker. New Orleans Saints Release Interesting Unofficial Depth Chart Ahead of First Preseason Game

Breaking down the New Orleans Saints first unofficial depth chart released ahead of their first NFL preseason matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. The early, unofficial poll positions give some idea of what the Saints preseason roster could look like. Starting with the offensive skill positions, no decisions yet at quarterback, Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston still yet to be named Saturday's starter. Wide receiver, running back, and right end have some interesting nuances including where Juwan Johnson is listed among the big pass-catchers. When it comes to the trenches, there are very few surprises on the offensive line with one of the top units in the NFL. However, the interior defensive line has generated much curiosity over the offseason, and this depth chart is no exception with the placement of Shy Tuttle. On the defense, some of the biggest questions are looming. Who will start next to Demario Davis? How soon will Kwon Alexander be healthy and can he eclipse the young talent that's stood out on Airline Drive? And of course, which corner will start next to Marshon Lattimore? A quick look at the depth chart gives you a good idea of what's expected at corner with Paulson Adebo, Brian Poole, Prince Amukamara, and Ken Crawley all as options unless another corner is added before the regular season begins. As the first phase of New Orleans Saints training camp wraps up, the focus turns to game prep before the first preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens! It's time to update the Saints' 53-man roster projections based upon what we've seen at camp so far. Even though the starting quarterback spot is still open between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill, the third QB role seems to be sewn up. Devonte Freeman adds another layer to the offense as a back who can mimic some of Alvin Kamara's abilities in the pass-catching game, but with limited roster space, he'll have to impress to steal a spot. And the top two wide receiver positions without Michael Thomas and potentially Deonte Harris look to be settled, even with one wideout missing time in camp The New Orleans Saints and head coach Sean Payton have always believed that NFL games are won in the trenches. The starting five offensive lineman in the NFL may make up one of the best units in the league, but big questions marks surround the defensive interior after the offseason departure of Sheldon Rankins and the suspension of David Onyemata. On the defensive side, Kwon Alexander makes his return to claim his spot beside Demario Davis in the second level, but young linebackers Pete Werner and Zack Baun have stood out in camp. Kwon Alexander Returns to the New Orleans Saints, Presents Competition for Young Linebackers

The New Orleans Saints return a fan favorite in linebacker Kwon Alexander. After less than eight months of recovery from his achilles injury, a nearly miraculous timeline, the athletic linebackers makes his return to the Big Easy. On a one-year deal worth up to $3 million, incentives are likely to be tied to playing time and performance. The Saints get away with a steal here getting Alexander back at no less than a $10 million discount from his original 2021 price tag. But what does this mean for the young linebackers on the Saints roster? 2021 Second-round rookie Pete Werner, 2020 third-round selection Zack Baun, and more young linebackers have done their best to pick up the Saints defense as quickly as possible and have no disappointed in camp thus far. Does Kwon Alexander slot in ahead of them? Or could they still topple the returning second-level playmaker. It will take a couple days before we see Kwon Alexander on the practice field, but with the fifth day of Saints training camp in the bag, there are a couple of important stories to follow. Wide receiver Tre'Quan Smith and cornerback Keith Washington both left practice early. Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill had down days with pads going on for the first time. Jameis Winston's Big Day and New Orleans Saints Training Camp Standouts So Far

The New Orleans Saints add some veterans to their roster with the signings of Prince Amukamara, KeiVarae Russell, and JR Sweezy. Adding experience to a cornerback spot hanging in the balance an an offensive line that has a steep drop off when it comes to playing time after James Hurst. In order to make room for these signings, New Orleans needed to create roster space with three corresponding transactions, moving on from Lorenzo Neal Jr, and Lawrence Woods and sending Dylan Soehner to injured reserve. Sean Payton and the gang kicked off Week 2 of Training Camp with a big day from Jameis Winston. Though both Jameis and Taysom Hill pushed the ball downfield on Monday, Hill clocked in some turnover-worthy plays. But there's more to be seen as neither QB has committed a turnover in camp. It's not just about the quarterbacks at Saints camp, there are several players that continue to stand out throughout practices so far. Alvin Kamara and Marshon Lattimore look like the stars they have been since being drafted together in 2017. But young players like Marquez Callaway and more continue to make their mark. What the Devonta Freeman Signing Means for New Orleans Saints Running Backs

The New Orleans Saints go bargain shopping in free agency better than just about any team in the NFL and now they land former Pro Bowl running back Devonta Freeman. But with Alvin Kamara, Latavius Murray, Ty Montgomery and more young options competing in the backfield, where does he fit in and what does it mean for the others? If Ty Montgomery is spending his time at wide receiver as we expect, Freeman and special teams ace Dwayne Washington could be set to battle it out for the rights to the third running back spot. The Saints are also expected to sign veteran cornerback Prince Amukamara and 2016 third-round pick KeiVarae Russell pending physicals. If they land with the Saints, two corresponding moves will have to be made to open up the roster spots. More low-risk moves by New Orleans as they look at several options to try to sure up the cornerback depth chart. Does Amukamara have a chance at CB2? Meanwhile it's special teams that may give Russell a chance to land a roster spot. Finally, Taysom Hill has focused entirely on competing for the starting quarterback role in New Orleans. What happens if he doesn't win it? He's spoken openly about shifts in his workout regiment, targeting different muscle groups for the role, and slimming down as well. But if he doesn't knock off Jameis Winston, what could that mean for his Swiss-army knife role? Locked On Saints host Ross Jackson discusses how the role could shift including where he might no longer be deployed and where the new build could also help as an offensive weapon. Both Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill made some big plays, but Jameis still found a way to separate himself. According to WWL Sports Director Doug Mouton, he didn't just do it with his arm. New Orleans will be looking for their young WR talent to step up. All eyes are on Tre'Quan Smith and Marquez Callaway as the Saints prepare to open the season potentially without the dominant Michael Thomas or All-Pro returner/wideout Deonte Harris. New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton and General Manager Mickey Loomis address Saints media in a press conference on Wednesday, training camp eve. Today, we discuss the biggest takeaways from availability including more on the Michael Thomas surgery situation, cornerback remaining a "must", and more on the Saints' health and safety percentages and how they feel about the WR room. Sean Payton says the Saints will "work through" losing Michael Thomas to open the season with the guys they have in the building. But one of those guys, Deonte Harris, was arrested on suspicion of a DUI earlier this month, meaning the options are continuing to thin to open the 2021 NFL season if he faces suspension like PJ Williams did in 2019. How Jalen McCleskey, Kawaan Baker, Tre'Quan Smith, and Marquez Callaway step up will be incredibly important to the Saints early season success. Also, watch out for UDFA CB Lawrence Woods at the returner spot if Harris is unavailable to start Weeks one and two. And finally, breaking down the recent additions of Chris Hogan and Kendall Donnerson, a look at those not available to start camp beyond Michael Thomas including PJ Williams and Wil Lutz, and how serious those situations are. Ross Jackson and Dylan Sanders of Canal Street Chronicles preview New Orleans Saints training camp with some fun superlatives including best camp standout, best rookie, biggest highlight, and more. On the offensive side, Saints rookie WR Kawaan Baker looks primed to beckon the spotlight at Saints camp. With size, speed, and athleticism, he checks all the boxes at a position that will get a ton of attention. QB Jameis Winston and WRs Marquez Callaway and Deonte Harris have the firepower to make explosive plays on Airline Drive and UDFA running back Stevie Scott could barrel his way on to the scene. Turning the page to defense, all eyes will be on the cornerback position. That could mean good things for second-year UDFA corner Keith Washington II who could be the sleeper selection to make the roster and round out a position of need. After at least six interceptions in last year's camp, a repeat performance could turn him into a camp MVP this year. Meanwhile, a rookie UDFA defensive lineman, Josiah Bronson, will be looking to make good on his reps in practice as well while the Saints are looking for answer on the interior defensive line. For the first time in 10+ seasons, the Saints will be fielding a new punter. With Thomas Morstead out, the spot looks to be Blake Gillikin's, but Syracuse rookie Nolan Cooney won't make it easy. Meanwhile, Kaden Elliss is in line for a huge special teams role with Craig Robertson leaving in free agency as well. New Orleans Saints training camp is right around the corner, so John Hendrix of Saints New Network joins today's episode of Locked On Saints. First, Ross and John break down everything you need to know around Michael Thomas' timetable and the young wideouts on the roster who will need to step up and produce in the All-Pro's absence. Tre'Quan Smith made his name as a deep threat on the outside in college, now he'll be asked to show he can still operate downfield. Marquez Callaway flashed in big moments last season, he now has the chance to show he's more than just a flash in the pan. Meanwhile, more players on the market remain that could be impactful for the Saints. Even though they signed Chris Hogan, names like Alshon Jeffrey, Kenny Stills, and more are still available. John and Ross then discuss the value of the recent Brian Poole signing. Even though Poole bring value to a team that may need to ask Patrick Robinson to move from the slot to outside, the Saints shouldn't be done at the position with boundary corners still available for pursuit. Finally, John breaks down what he's excited to see on the offense and defensive sides of the ball in camp as well as under-the-radar storylines to watch. The quarterback battle between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill may headline camp, but the wide receiver position, Adam Trautman's ascension atop his position group, and several talented young names on defense are worth your attention. Along with a QB battle, there will also be a punter battle to enjoy between Blake Gillikin and Nolan Cooney. From the signal callers to the special teamers, Saints camp in no way lacks of intrigue. Here's how he fits into the Saints secondary, could shake it up, and how the signing could affect a versatile chess piece like C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Even with the signing of Poole, the Saints may still be in the market for an outside cornerback. With Steven Nelson having now signed with the Philadelphia Eagles,, which corners are still on the market? Dre Kirkpatrick has already been brought in, but how about a young option like Gareon Conley? Still some potential out there to address a position of need with a career outside cornerback. Which free agent options the New Orleans Saints could pursue to pacify the loss of Michael Thomas to start the season? The key will be focusing on adding the WR core as opposed to trying to replace MT. Options like Josh Gordon and Larry Fitzgerald are "what if's" based on availability. But could Alshon Jeffrey or Kenny Stills be an option? The Saints shouldn't limit themselves to the free agent market. They have the draft capital and money to pursue trade options as well. Patriots WR N'Keal Harry's fracture relationship in Foxboro could be a cheap price to pay for the Saints.
