Camp Day 16 notes have some standout performances from new and returning players. Newly signed WR Kevin White catches a touchdown pass in his first day, Tre'Quan Smith makes several plays in his return, and Marcus Williams walks off with another camp interception. Meanwhile, each Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill continue their up and down performances. The New Orleans Saints will have some tough decisions to make as they are set to make another five-player cut after Monday's matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. But the next week, they'll be looking to get down to the regular season 53-man roster. On the offensive side, Tony Jones Jr. threatens veteran running backs Latavius Murray and Devonta Freeman for a spot. The wide receiver room continues to shed players and add new players. Kevin White tries to revitalize his career with Sean Payton. On the defensive side, the Saints' linebacker unit has gone from massive concern to one of the team's most solid units. Chase Hansen and Andrew Dowell fight for spots behind Demario Davis, Kwon Alexander, Zack Baun and more. Meanwhile the cornerback spot opposite Marshon Lattimore still hangs in the balance. Ken Crawley and Paulson Adebo look like the most logical choices, however new faces and young players still need to fill out the depth. The interior defensive line took some bumps and bruises over the offseason, and the players that are filling the gap are only partially those we expected as Jalen Dalton and Christian Ringo continue to ascend and Shy Tuttle heads down the camp depth chart.Follow Ross on Twitter @RossJacksonNOLASupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The New Orleans Saints wasted no time getting their roster cut down to the league-required 85-man roster. The had reportedly already made all of their cuts before their Sunday practice including one surprise move the were forced to make, which re-opens another big hole at kicker.Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill saw similar numbers of opportunities (passes thrown and snaps taken) on Saturday. That trend didn't change when personnel groupings are broken down. But with a look at Ian Book's personnel frequency shows exactly what the Saints wanted to use for their evaluation of the rookie QB.WR turned TE Juwan Johnson put on an impressive show when he was the only tight end on the field, Marquez Callaway made the plays a #1 should make, and Tony Jones Jr. got a little help from his friends.Updating a 53-man roster projection after the handful of roster cuts and Saturday's action gives way to Tony Jone Jr, Easop Winston, and Chase Hansen who all impressed. But the fate of Devonta Freeman and Latavius Murray may hang in the balance come the 53-man trim down.Follow Ross on Twitter @RossJacksonNOLASupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The MOUTH OF THE SOUTH talks about how each QB has looked so far in camp, CB & WR additions may come after the first preseason game, and the Devonta Freeman signing
The New Orleans Saints go bargain shopping in free agency better than just about any team in the NFL and now they land former Pro Bowl running back Devonta Freeman. But with Alvin Kamara, Latavius Murray, Ty Montgomery and more young options competing in the backfield, where does he fit in and what does it mean for the others? If Ty Montgomery is spending his time at wide receiver as we expect, Freeman and special teams ace Dwayne Washington could be set to battle it out for the rights to the third running back spot. The Saints are also expected to sign veteran cornerback Prince Amukamara and 2016 third-round pick KeiVarae Russell pending physicals. If they land with the Saints, two corresponding moves will have to be made to open up the roster spots. More low-risk moves by New Orleans as they look at several options to try to sure up the cornerback depth chart. Does Amukamara have a chance at CB2? Meanwhile it's special teams that may give Russell a chance to land a roster spot. Finally, Taysom Hill has focused entirely on competing for the starting quarterback role in New Orleans. What happens if he doesn't win it? He's spoken openly about shifts in his workout regiment, targeting different muscle groups for the role, and slimming down as well. But if he doesn't knock off Jameis Winston, what could that mean for his Swiss-army knife role? Locked On Saints host Ross Jackson discusses how the role could shift including where he might no longer be deployed and where the new build could also help as an offensive weapon.Follow Ross on Twitter @RossJacksonNOLASupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
