Globalization is dying, maybe even dead. Borders are back, baby. That's the message in Jonn Elledge's sparkling Brief History of the World in 47 Borders. In this romp around world history , Elledge introduces us to 47 of the world's oddest borders including particularly weird ones in Detroit, Kaliningrad and Bolivia. So should be celebrating or mourning the rebirth of the border? Elledge is in mourning. A self-described progressive who grew up on Star Trek dreams of planetary unity, he sees nationalism's resurgence since 2016 as "quite a bad thing." He blames economic stagnation—when the pie stops growing, generous approaches to migration and distribution become much harder to sustain. I'm more sanguine. Whatever globalist bureaucrats at the UN or EU promised us, borders were never going away. As a species, we humans are agoraphobic. The Trekkies are wrong. The claustrophobia of the border is what gives us our sense of space. 1. Borders are having a political moment - The "liberal hegemony" that promised borderless globalization has been collapsing since 2016 (Brexit, Trump), making nationalism and territorial division the dominant political force again.2. Economic stagnation drives border obsession - When economies aren't growing and people aren't getting richer, generous policies on migration and wealth distribution become much harder to sustain politically.3. Maps shape leaders' minds - Trump's fixation on his Oval Office Ukraine map shows how visual representations of territory directly influence foreign policy decisions and geopolitical thinking.4. Most "historic" borders are recent inventions - What we assume are natural, ancient boundaries (like the Berlin Wall, Bangladesh, or even Germany's division) are often just decades old, showing how arbitrary our sense of "normal" geography really is.5. Borders create unexpected consequences - From Bolivia maintaining a navy despite being landlocked to Detroit's expansion bankrupting the city, where you draw lines has profound, often unintended effects on politics, economics, and culture for generations.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Alright, everybody lock in. Remember months ago when Saturn was like "I'm going to Aries!" and then immediately was like "actually, wait, I forgot something in Pisces"? Well, Monday it's officially going back to check its work. This isn't Saturn being indecisive - it's Saturn being Saturn, making sure you actually did your homework from March 2023 instead of just shoving it under your bed and hoping no one would notice. And because the universe has a sense of humor darker than mine, we're also getting a lunar eclipse in Pisces on Sunday. So while Saturn's like "let me just review your rough draft," the eclipse is like "cool, but also let's emotionally purge everything you've been avoiding since early last year." It's giving group therapy session meets tax audit, but make it cosmic. At least Mercury's entering Virgo on Tuesday, so our brains will be sharp enough to handle whatever emotional debris we're about to excavate.Key moments of the week:Sun, Aug. 31: Mercury in Leo trines Chiron in AriesMon, Sept. 1: Saturn (retrograde) enters PiscesTues, Sept. 2: Mercury enters VirgoWed, Sept. 3: Mercury in Virgo squares Uranus in GeminiWed, Sept. 3: Jupiter in Cancer trines the North Node in PiscesThurs, Sept. 4: Mars in Libra squares Jupiter in CancerSat, Sept. 6: Uranus stations retrograde in GeminiSun, Sept. 7: Lunar Eclipse in PiscesTo read your, your kids', and your co-parents' daily horoscopes for this week, along with the detailed daily insights throughout the week, and personalized insights for every transit going on right now (plus deep dive parenting guides based on your specific chart and your kids' charts), pop over to the website or either app store:Get started on the websiteiPhone and iPad appsAndroid app

After a mandatory "holiday", Formula 1 is back this weekend with the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix. Yes, Max Verstappen's home race. What are the key talking points this weekend? What will the media play up, and what will the teams play down? Also, we're racing at a legendary circuit - Zandvoort. Enjoy it as long as it lasts! Will rain "Unleash the Lion" aka Max Verstappen at home in front of the Orange Army? Could the cooler conditions bring Mercedes into contention, and similarly, will Ferrari have used the summer break wisely to add a spring to their step? As for McLaren, the Drivers' Championship battle between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris resumes at Zandvoort. Will the summer break have halted Norris' momentum (he won 3 out of 4 races prior to the summer break)? Lots in store this weekend, including overtaking moves at Turn 1, Turn 3 and maybe the Turn 11-12 sequence? Pirelli is bringing tyre compounds that are one step softer than last year + the pit lane speed limit is up from 60 kmph to 80 kmph. We will see a variety of race strategy at play, and this could spice up the action on-track and in the pit lane. With Tobin out, it's another Marcos-led takeover, and we dive right in as we gear up for tonight's Hall of Fame Game. Marcos runs through this year's Hall of Fame inductees — though let's be honest, all anyone can talk about are Eric Allen's mesmerizing eyes. We shift gears to the Marlins: hovering near the .500 mark — is that something to celebrate, or just a step in the right direction? Then it's time for a classic Marcos segment: Day to Day, where we break down today's National Days and famous birthdays. Things take a wild turn when Leroy shares a traumatic (and hilarious) flashback involving none other than Wesley Snipes at the club back in the day!
