What if the key to personal peace and professional success is hidden behind unresolved resentment? In this powerful and heartfelt episode, we sit down with Kory Livingstone—musician, author, and coach—who shares his deeply personal journey of forgiveness, emotional healing, and growth. Kory opens up about the strained relationship with his father, the walls that were built from years of pain, and the breakthrough that happened when he was asked to write his father's eulogy. Whether you're navigating family wounds, professional conflict, or just trying to grow into a better version of yourself, this conversation is one you won't want to miss. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: Why forgiveness isn't weakness, and how it actually empowers you The surprising connection between understanding and emotional healing How unresolved resentment affects success—both at home and in the workplace What it means to "break generational cycles" and how to begin A simple but powerful mindset shift that helps you start forgiving—even without an apology How Kory's experience inspired a touching original song that beautifully captures the forgiveness process Why leaders and companies need to address resentment for lasting growth Actionable tips for starting your own healing journey RESOURCES MENTIONED: Get a FREE copy of Kory's book: "Quite Determination: 15 Ways to Break the Barriers of Your Untapped Success (just pay for shipping—email Kory at kory@korylivingstone.com and mention this episode. Seeing others through a lens of compassion doesn't excuse harmful behavior—but it allows us to release the resentment that weighs us down. Forgiveness is a process, not a one-time event: Healing happens one memory, one moment, one emotional "brick" at a time. Like Kory said, "We broke down the wall one brick at a time." You can break the cycle and create a new legacy: You have the power to say "Not me." You don't have to carry forward the pain of the past. You get to write a new story—one rooted in growth, love, and intention. Tune in now and discover how forgiveness could be the missing piece in your personal growth journey—and how it might just change everything.

Kory was born and raised in Toronto, Canada —one of the most culturally diverse cities in the entire world— home to the Bluejays, Leafs, and Raptors. Kory attributes his successful career in music as a composer, pianist, songwriter, singer, and educator to the fact that he uses the “mindset of an entrepreneur to temper art with business”. His latest achievement is becoming a published author of the book, “Quiet Determination - 15 ways to Break the Barriers to your Untapped Success!” He's been educating, inspiring and entertaining audiences at trade shows, conventions and seminars for over 30 years. Kory's life completely changed the day he received this letter in the mail some 20 years ago. "Dear Kory....I have admired your quiet persistent determination and attention to detail. It is more than talent; it's mature determination. I would do well to apply the same to my own life. God bless all your efforts." Neil S. "That letter was the impetus for me to change the focus of my life-long career as a composer, pianist and singer to that of a motivational speaker and published author. I had to find out what Neil meant by 'Quiet Determination' and my book, of the same name, was the outcome of my journey of discovery." Kory Livingstone, Juno Award nominee, composer, educator, pianist & vocalist was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, one of the world’s most culturally diverse cities and home to the Bluejays, Leafs, and Raptors. In his teens he discovered the great jazz innovators Thelonious Monk, Bill Evan; the rhythm of James Brown and the genius of Bach, Beethoven and Arnold  Schoenburg. These were who helped Kory make music his calling in life. "My first professional job as as musician was playing organ in an R&B band at a birthday party. We made two bucks each, which seemed a lot of money at the time. Man, it was a blast!” In Kory’s early career as a pro, he sang and played piano in the piano bars that accented just about every hotel and club in Toronto. This was where he learned the music business; performing 6 nights a week, in an environment of thick cigarette smoke and booze. As an entrepreneur, Kory founded the Toronto High School for the Performing - an independent school where students combined the study of academics and the performing arts. Graduates include Keanu Reeves (Matrix) Cree Summer Francks (Different World) and Karen Fox the youngest person ever to be accepted into Sarah Lawrence University. Recently Kory has returned to York University to realize his life-long dream of becoming fully bilingual in French. He also enrolled in an advanced composition course as well. His goal in this regard is to have access to the wealth of musicians, singers, choirs, and arrangers on campus, to experiment with in his compositions. He also expects to pick up additional tricks of the trade to add to his personal arsenal of composing skills. "Now is the time to start working on your goals because "The time will never be right.”" To learn more about Kory Livingstone and his work, please visit korylivingstone.com or email kory@korylivngstone.com.

Kory Livingstone is an author, and Juno-nominated jazz composer, pianist, teacher, and speaker living in the Greater Toronto Area. But before the episode can dig deep into music, we start with his parents Kay Livingstone, theatre actress and community activist and newspaper publisher George Livingstone. Kory is carrying on their legacy, working as a public speaker himself, and Michael ends up fascinated by Kory’s thoughts on ethnic neighbourhoods and foundational atrocities of this continent. They also discuss the value of diversity and how difficult it can be to pursue it. Confronting systemic and cultured racism is difficult in modern Canada, in part because we’re so willing to address it in good faith. When the conversation does shift to music, it’s about the joy and beauty found in form that Kory discovered in his teenage years listening to Bach and Bill Evans. Music is the canary in the coal mine of modern life; North America’s mine should be shuttered. This continent’s scene for jazz is losing not only spaces and airwaves, but the meaning of the word. Meanwhile, we learn that listening to the great composers is to be invited into the workshop of a great mind - the power to see genius at work, hearing it one element at a time and then being struck by it all at once. However, musicianship is more than enjoying good work, or participating in beauty. To practice as a musician is to practice the skills for success in all aspects of life. Which leads to Kory’s book Quiet Determination, which started with compliment he got after a concert from a member of the venue’s staff and grew into a series of strategies to turn talent and art into mastery in your life. As a “keynote artist”, he underscores the emotional aspects his keynote addresses with original songs performed at the piano. One of his achievements is his book, Quiet Determination, Unlocking the Gates to Unlimited Success. In his book he relates the tendency most people have to overthink "how we're going to do it" to the point of forgetting the original vision and giving up on it before it has a chance for fruition. "I'm not a millionaire, nor am I losing any sleep over how to become one. I'm not famous, nor am I dying become an celebrity. Success means different thing to different people. We've been brainwashed by the media to think that success is defined as how much money we have, how many things we possess. You only have to look at the number rich and famous people who are generally depressed, dissatisfied and unhappy with their miserable, wretched lives to see what I mean." "Quiet Determination" by Kory Livingstone. Kory has released six albums on his own independent record label, Crestant Records. His CD entitled You Were In My Eyes, a collection of eight original songs that tell stories about our everyday life experiences, the many faces of love, inspirational themes and the power of words. They Say It’s Wonderful is Kory’s response to popular demand from his fans. It contains vocal jazz standards and originals written by Kory. His self-titled CD Kory Livingstone is Kory’s first CD. Kory’s hometown is Toronto, Canada. He’s an author, and a keynote artist. Keynote artist? That’s a speaker who accents his talks with a live music performance. This makes perfect sense for Kory seeing that he has a lifelong calling, centred around music in many different capacities, ranging from that of composer, pianist, singer, teacher and entrepreneur. Keynote speaking has been revolutionized with the inclusion of live musical performances. Music is emotion. Kory puts the emotional impact of his talks into overdrive, by accentuating them with personalized music, that he’s written specifically for each speaking topic. People remember genuine emotion years after they’ve forgotten the facts, numbers, and stats of any presentation. Kory continues to write music & songs for artists, tv, radio and has recently added the service of creating custom-made songs for corporations, individuals and other keynote speakers. To date he’s released 5 CD’s of original music, and shows no signs of stopping. Kory has succeeded where others thought he would fail. In his youth, he was enrolled in a bachelor of music programme at Wilfred Laurier University. He didn’t graduate because it was deemed he didn’t meet all the requirements as set out by the music faculty. A classmate of Kory’s, Daniel, suffered the same fate. Oddly enough, Kory and Daniel took other routes and became the only students in their class, to make their living as full-time, professional musicians. Statistics show that very few music students, anywhere in the world, manage to make their living as a professional musicians. As an business entrepreneur, one of Kory’s early successes was being the founder and director of the Toronto High School of the Performing parts. A private non-sectarian school where students combined their academic studies with that of the music, dance, drama, and art. Alumnae included Keanu Reeves, and Cree Summer Franks, Cree Summer was Freddy, in Bill Cosby’s “Different Strokes” series. It was the only school of its kind in all if Canada. Many other school boards have since followed suit. “The fondest memory of my time as director of this school happened on a warm spring evening when the students had just come back to the student residence, after our annual spring prom. They were gathered on the front lawn, saying their goodbyes for the summer. There were tears, there were smiles, there was hugging & kissing. There was love. I watched and drank it all in. I realized that I was responsible for this. I bought so many different people together. I gave these young people new life experiences. New friends. I helped them grow. This moment above all, was my reward. Money cannot buy this. I realized that I, little ole me, had made a difference in so many lives. How many people can say, ‘I made a difference’? It doesn’t get any better than this.” With a lifetime of experience, knowledge and creative enterprise, Kory continues to live by the motto that his mother instilled in him as a boy. “Lifting as We Climb”. His goal is to help others in the development and application of their own mindsets for success, in their lives, in quest of their special hopes, aspirations and dreams. This letter that I received on a tiny 3x3 post-it note sums it all up. “Dear Kory, I have admired your persistent, quiet determination and attention to details. It is more than talent; it’s a mature determination. I could do well to apply the same to my life. May God bless all of your efforts.” - Neil S. Accomplished pianist, composer, songwriter, and entrepreneur Kory Livingstone, author of the book Quiet Determination drops by and tells us what separates good business coaches from bad coaches, as well as what you should look for in a good coach. Display TranscriptRobert Plank: My guest today is Kory Livingstone. He's going to be talking to us about finding the right business coach and he seems like a pretty cool guy. He plays piano, does vocals, has a party band, The Fabulous Mercurys, so I can't wait to hear what cool business knowledge he plans on dropping. Welcome to the show, Kory. Kory Livingstone: Thank you for having me, nice to be here. Robert Plank: I'm glad to have you here. I really like when people put some or a lot of their personality into the things they have to say as opposed to just people saying I'm a business coach, I'm a turnaround coach and they don't really have much to say. I really like how the things that you have to say you've mixed them and combined them with your musician and the other business stuff you have to say as well. Kory Livingstone: Yeah, my core is a musician, but don't be fooled, oh, he's only a musician. My book which is Quiet Determination: Unlocking the Gates to Unlimited Success is based on the lessons that I learned while studying music. In order to be successful in music there's a mindset, there's things you have to do in order to be successful in music. Successful in music, successful in life is the theme of the book. These are the lessons that I learned while I was studying music and I apply them to everything I do in life. It's like a hammer. You can use a hammer to hammer in this type of nail, that type of nail, a screwdriver for this, that, all these things. These are the tools that are used in different situations. Whether you're building a house or a swimming pool or a garage or a wall or an addition, they all use the same hammer, the same tool. Just because you're a musician it doesn't mean the tools you use to be successful to become a musician are not applicable to tools you have to use to be a successful lawyer, a doctor, a mechanic, a maintenance man, it doesn't matter. You have to have certain tools or I should say a mindset to be successful in life, period. What I have discovered when I wrote my book all these tools... Actually, it's a mindset and you've got to have a certain mindset to be successful. Coaching you have to have a mindset to be coached, to be coachable. All the big businesses, all the big businesses right around the world they work on developing the talent within their own ranks either through seminars, conferences, take a course. This is coaching. It may come across as a seminar, whatever word you want to use, but the bottom-line is that it's coaching. They're trying to promote within their ranks, so they can really do... Everybody has talent. It's potential. Some of us use some of our talent, some of us use a lot of our talent, some of us use very little of our potential talent. It's there, so it's just a matter of getting it out of you and that's what a coach does. Robert Plank: That's cool. It seems like there's a lot of parallels and a lot of lessons that you learn from this area of being a musician that you now apply it in other areas is what you're saying. Kory Livingstone: Exactly, just as I had a music teacher, but really a music coach. Athletes, professional athletes have coaches. That's where a lot of people go wrong and think oh, gee, I'm not an athlete, so how can I have a coach, I don't need a coach. No, coaching goes right across, right across all walks of life, financial, even leadership. There's certain... Coaching is just an amalgamation of a whole bunch of different things; consulting, psychology, leadership, management, training, counseling. Now you don't have... This sounds like gee, in order to be a coach I should be a psychologist or something like that. No. Yes, psychologists are coaches,

Children's Corner: Quiet Determination, unlocking the gates to success (music) ~ with guest: Kory Livingstone Many people in North America and around the world question the value of a music education in their kid's life. School boards often slash music budgets, in favour of readin', writin' & ‘rithmetic budgets, when they find themselves in financial difficulty. Parents cite the excuse for not enrolling their children in piano, violin, guitar lessons etc., “ I can't afford it”. We all know that 99% of all parents are concerned with the future well-being of their children. That's why Moms & Dads all over the world encourage their kids to do well in school, listen to the teacher, go to college etc., all of this in the hopes that they'll acquire friends, get good jobs and ultimately be successful in their lives. However  most parents, fail to recognize that it's not education in and of itself that augers well for success, but rather it's one's mindset that determines how successful you will be in life...for parents  and children both. In his new book, “Quiet Determination, unlocking the gates to unlimited success!, Kory Livingstone talks about how mindset, rather than talent or education, is most responsible for our own success in life. Unfortunately for most people, having a mindset for success can't be purchased. It can only be developed. For more information visit: http://www.korylivingstone.com/
