Stumbling and Bumbling Along Oh my… This podcast regarding the birth narrative of Jesus is raw. Filled with ah's and uh's and so's. Longer periods of silence. Very “not professional.” And yet it is filled with truth about the humble ways of the Divine.  God is not so much interested in pretty presentations as He is in powerful truths underlying the presentations. It is about the message and not the medium, because the actual medium is the Spirit of God. She grabs the message and places it into the hearts of the listeners. That means the message is not about me, it is about wonder and surprise. God's ways are not the ways of humans. And so, in this show on The Other Christmas Story I found myself stumbling along, bumbling like a drunkard, drunk on the Good News. The kind of News that thrusts itself into the hearts of the listeners—all by the profound and precise medium of the Holy Spirit. Please forgive our raw awkwardness in this show and plunk yourself down in the presence of the Holy, lying in a manger or, more accurately, lying in a feeding trough in a barn.

Ideas about a core philosophy of love, kind of in line with the words of Jesus about loving your neighbor… ... only I want to be rather specific when my neighbor is the one struggling at the bottom level of Maslow's hierarchy—those with access to water, food, shelter, warmth, and clothing. Those I refer to as the poor and disenfranchised.  Here's how I began my latest blog written the day after the election results:  Today is a day of sorrow and fear for one-half of the American public. It seems to me that fear and loss of hope largely represent the emotions of those who long for social justice. I understand. However, it also seems to me that social justice is less a governmental thing than it is a matter of personal responsibility.  As is her style, Caitlyn Cogan Doemner offers both brilliant and practical insights into our role as “our brother's keeper.”  LINKS Check out Caitlin's astounding website HERE. Show Notes  Well, we're finally back with our dear friend Terry Hershey. The topic we will chat about today is the role of the ordinary—the everyday—in the lexicon of spirituality.  For most of us, the idea of the Divine is often thought of a special, unique, and oft times spectacular occurrences. When the truth is God is most frequently found in ordinary occasions of work and play and familiar relationships. The word “epiphany” comes to mind which we understand “seeing God” in the miraculous or the special. But the dictionary definition simply means a “manifestation of God” and in our minds divine manifestations occur daily and regularly.  Terry Hershey's new book, Sanctuary – Creating a Space for Grace in Your Life, not only defines where we can find God, it also describes and suggests habits for doing so. It's a way to approach and embrace your daily life through a lens of grace, freedom, and contentedness. So… let's get at it.  LINKS Find out all about Terry Hershey and Sabbath Moment HERE.

We talked about managing fear and the need to take risks. And then we concluded the show with a discussion about fear in relationships. We didn't have time to discuss fear in careers and in voting.   Today, in Part Two we chat about those issues.  Yes, we do talk about fear and voting in the presidential election of 2024. Show Notes  Hi Paul. My guest today, author and Zen Master, Nora D'Ecclesis joins us to discuss her latest fiction, The Contessa's Legacy. Beginning in Pompeii, 79 AD, Nora guides us through 2000 years of a history of resilience, perseverance, and commitment—all for the sake of what she calls, “Generational Legacy.”  The story moved me, but not as much as the ideology—so much for those of us that live in our heads and hearts. What is required for a passionate mother to leave with her family the very best of family tradition as they are forced to deal with the distractions of life?  Nora tells us the how one family made it and how it just might be a model for all of us to follow or institute in our families today.  At this point in the introduction I would normally offer up an overview of Nora's accomplishments. But as is typical with those in humble spiritual practices, Nora is quite private. It's almost impossible to even find what we might consider a bio or resume. So… let's just let Nora's work and conversation speak for itself. Show Notes Well, here I sit, back from 3 weeks on a northern Europe cruise and a few days in Cambridge, England. I love travel, except I got home last night, and I am still on England time and a wee bit fatigued. But I promised our most special guest my best. Which won't be difficult at all because she is a tremendous guest. So much fun! In my opinion, our guest today, Suzanne Campi ranks as a premier personal life coach for those of you looking for wisdom in life's most challenging transitions. Today's show is all about making wise choices in a puzzling world as we deal with what Suzanne calls “The Miraculous Middle” days of life. Just a note. As all you regular listeners know I spend an hour with each guest prior to the show to discuss our topics. I have to admit that my discussion with Suzanne earlier today was SO good for me, personally, that I nearly forgot to talk about the show.   Suzanne's gifts are obvious: she listens intently, she is rapaciously curious and is fully present offering keen wisdom.  With that, let's welcome our special guest on the show.  Important Links Please visit Suzanne Campi's excellent website HERE.  Check out more on Suzanne on LinkedIn HERE.

Show Notes   Today I thought I might explore a few thoughts I have wrestled with recently about discovering God in a fresh and ever more realistic fashion. A discovery based not on our expectations of how God might act, but on our reception to a God of unexpected relationships, of quiet relationships.  Oh, I am tempted to go into deep theology at this time, but I won't. Instead I want to tell a couple stories.  I am will begin with, an… I don't know… like a nearly three-thousand-year-old story of the prophet Elijah, his contest with the priests of Baal, his 40-day journey, and concluding with an encounter with God.  And that's what is needed so desperately today in the West… not a God of thunder but a God of tranquil quiet.

Due to a last-minute cancellation of a show with a pre-planned guest, Terry stepped right up to help. So, we have a most interesting show with little prep time. In a recent Sabbath Moment post Terry Hershey wrote this, “I believe in the healing power of revisiting. Because sometimes we need stories more than food to stay alive. They remind us of what really matters and allow us to see—and connect—with our heart. Stories save us.” Today Terry and I talk about favorite stories from movies, books, and personal life. So today, I've asked friend, author, and creative thinker Terry Hershey to ponder with me on several kinds of non-related subjects such as Storm Homes and the totally unrelated subject of the wonder of old age.  LINKS Find out all about Terry Hershey and Sabbath Moment HERE.
