In this episode I lay how what Showmanship is, as I see it. If we are to work out what the origins of something is, particularly if the origins lay deep in prehistory, then chances are there has been a great deal of change to the thing. Sometimes so much that it is hard to recognice it. SO, to be able to know what the origins are we must know what the relevant and unchanging elements of the evolving thing we seek to understand. Last episode I talked about the evolutionary history of the whale and how one of the key elements that's used to trace its transformation from land animal to sea animal is some bones in its inner ear. In this episode I describe a Show as related to Henri Corbin's Imaginal Realm. And I make the claim that what a Show is, which is a different level of reality, other than normal life, where ordinary objects and words and images become symbolic and poetic and filled with meaning. It is a purely human kind of relation and a uniquely human experience. So, this realm of experience we call show, is the thing we will use as our lodestone to keep us on track as we venture back into prehistory.links:Henri Corbin and the Imaginal Realmthe Cabaret sensation and huge part of my life: La Soiree & La CliqueSupport the show...Now you can get t-shirts and hoodies with our wonderful logo. From the 1876 Centennial Exposition to the end of the 19th Century, Philadelphia's experienced a boom in theater construction. New plays, musicals, operettas and vaudeville shows constantly cycled in and out of the city to fill these theaters. By the 1890s, one newspaperman estimated that on average each of Philadelphia's one million people saw five shows a year! It was the best of times. In this episode we do our best to describe this productive and significant, but mostly forgotten era of Philadelphia theater history. Music in the episode is mostly from Evangeline; or, The Belle of Acadia an 1874 musical by Edward Rice.To see and hear more of this show, as it was recently played and produced in Portland, Maine, see this playlist on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzxddX3RlZft3pSnqdMzU43l4emFzE6TRA heartfelt thanks to Mr. Charles Kaufmann and the singers and orchestra of the Longfellow Chorus of Portland Maine, as well as the Charlotte Cushman Foundation of Philadelphia for their generous help, cooperation and support.

Nathan, Nat and Shaun’s best bits! An 85-year-old Perth man visited a gym two-thousand days in a row – what a commitment! Emma and her hubby went to an Indian restaurant so often they invited the owners to their wedding and Clint’s kids were basically brought up by the staff members at IKEA. Sword swallower Lucky Hall from La Soiree chatted with NNS about why she wanted to become a sword swallower and the dangers that comes with it! Either way she’s not about to give it up anytime soon. Shaun’s friends went away on holiday and called in a house sitter to look after their place – within hours of them leaving, the girl had invited heaps of friends over for a party! Mel had to look after a sick dog and Jason had to pay for a new floor – whoops. And Royalty was in the house with Lady Kitty Spencer joining NNS for some bacon savouries made by Marlene Morris! The guys put on a spread for Lady Kitty but were more disappointed when she didn’t raise her pinky while drinking from her tea cup... isn’t that what all royalty do?! A man fought off a mountain lion when he was out for a run – the guy had to fight for his life! Shaun once had to fight for his life in a ball pit. Callan called through and explained how he fought for his life with a spiderweb, and Dave went head to head with a fish.Lucky Hell swallows swords – and she’s from Perth! You can catch her in La Soiree on at Fringe right now, and head to the Nathan, Nat & Shaun Facebook page to see her swallow a neon sword!Nat Fyfe is not only captain of the mighty Freo Dockers, but also captaining an AFL X team, the Flyers. He picked his team and reckons it’s like being in the schoolyard fighting over the players you want. He also chose a past player in a hypothetical…it may or may not have been Shaun (it wasn’t).And recently retired Wildcat Greg Hire came into the studio to receive a retiree cake from the guys, and explain how he came to the decision to give it away. Also hear the story of how he told Jesse Wagstaff and Damian Martin about his decision– it did quite go to plan for him. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Another Aussie is in NYC visiting my carnie family, La Soiree. Soooooo, this week's guest is Creative Producer and Ringmaster Brett Haylock! We catch up with him in between teching acts for the New Years Eve spectacular. We talk about the international phenomenom that La Soiree has beome - from little show born out of The Famous Speigeltent to it's Olivier award winning West End run. Skill and heart, danger and subversion. Trusting your instincts and being the best is what it is all about. Leave your troubles at the door, La Soiree is in town!! And, yes, it is impossible to resist.
Variety superstar Clarke MacFarlane blends elements of stand-up, clowning and skills to create the show-stopping, crowd-surfing "Mario, Queen of the Circus". Touring with La Clique and La Soiree has allowed him to hone his act to perfection over years, but he still "pays his dues" with regular streetshows. We discuss his work rate and workaholism, his respect for standups, and his bizarre pre-performance habits, not to mention the dark voices that plague even a top level act such as himself.Get ad-free new episodes, bonus content from interviews and much more by joining the Insiders Club at www.comedianscomedian.com/insidersGet tickets for Stu Goldsmith's stand-up tour at www.comedianscomedian.com/tour@comcompod | www.comedianscomedian.comAnd don't forget to join the Comcom Facebook group, which you can do here.
