Thanks for joining me in Session 315 of The Behavioral Observations Podcast. In this episode, I spoke with Drs. Gabi Morgan and David Adams to dive deep into trauma-informed behavior analysis. Gabi brings her 30-year journey in the field—from undergrad roots to professorship at Bay Path University—while David shares his evolution from child and family therapy to clinical psychology, with a heavy focus on foster and adoptive parenting. Both guests are passionate about closing the divide between trauma therapy and behavioral strategies, and they credit mentors like Dr. Jeannie Golden for lighting the way. We kick things off by unpacking what trauma really means. In doing so, as a content warning, please be aware that we do make general references to a variety of traumatic and adverse experiences. Having said that, David walks us through SAMHSA's three-part definition: the event, the experience, and the effects. It's not the event itself that defines trauma—it's the individual's response. He introduces "adverse conditioning experiences" as a behavior-analytic twist on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), spotlighting how negative associations get wired in through conditioning. From there, we contrast PTSD and complex PTSD. Same core symptoms (intrusive thoughts, avoidance, etc.), but complex PTSD adds prolonged exposure and three extra layers: impaired self-worth, rocky relationships, and emotional dysregulation. Gabi drives home a critical point: folks with developmental disabilities are at higher risk for trauma but often fly under the diagnostic radar. We need to get better at spotting trauma-related behaviors in this population. Screening, Brain Science, and Practical Strategies Screening is a big theme. We all agree behavior analysts aren't formally trained in assessment, but we have to be aware of how this is done. Gabi loves the Child Health and Development Institute's Child Trauma Screen (CTS), and the Massachusetts Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (Mass CANS) tool. David then nerds out on the neurobiology: trauma affects the amygdala (hypervigilance), hippocampus (memory glitches), hypothalamus (stress gone haywire), and frontal lobe (decision-making on the fritz). Enter the "amygdala hijack"—when fear short-circuits rational thought. Bottom line? Kids in fight-or-flight aren't in a teachable moment. Safety and calm have to come first. We close the show with actionable takeaways: risk-benefit analyses for every intervention (especially with histories of food neglect), "kind extinction" (empathy + withholding reinforcers), and the six pillars of trauma-informed care (safety, trustworthiness, peer support, collaboration, empowerment, cultural competence). TIC isn't a "hyphenated" ABA—it's the whole framework. Advice for new BCBAs? Seek trauma training, question "business as usual," and be the stable adult in a kid's chaotic world. TIC is an approach that recognizes the possibility that many people may have a history of trauma exposure, and how this past or ongoing trauma such as abuse, neglect or food insecurity can shape a person's relationship with food, body and health behaviors. Data show that 64% of adults in the U.S. reported they had experienced at least one type of adverse childhood experience (ACE) before age 18 and nearly one in six adults reported they had experienced four or more types of ACEs. Compared to women with 0 ACEs, women with 4+ ACEs are 62% more likely to have obesity, 41% more likely to report a hypertension diagnosis, and 36% more likely to report a diabetes diagnosis. Se trata de un comportamiento repetitivo cuyo objetivo es humillar, enfadar o atemorizar a otra persona. Entre sus formas más comunes se encuentran la difusión de rumores, la publicación de fotos vergonzosas, el envío de mensajes amenazantes o la suplantación de identidad. Prevenir y actuar frente al ciberacoso requiere educación digital, diálogo abierto con jóvenes y adolescentes, y el uso responsable de la tecnología. Es fundamental denunciar estos comportamientos y ofrecer apoyo a las víctimas para evitar que el daño se prolongue.

Astoņas sievietes 2025. gada oktobra sākumā devās ceļā, lai jau apzinīgā vecumā satiktos ar savu jaunību, savas draudzības un pasaules izzināšanas ceļa sākumpunktu. Sākumā stāsts par to, kas notika pavisam nesen, oktobra sākumā Francijā. Kā astoņas sievietes, vecumā, kad koks jau ir iestādīts, bērni lieli un arī ar čūskām attiecības atmaigušas, nolēma atgriezties vietā, kurā viņu apzinīgās dzīves tikai sākās. Pagājušā gadsimta 90. gados, kad krita “dzelzs priekškars”, teju visa Austrumeiropa sakāpa autobusos iepazīt gadu desmitiem liegtās Vakareiropas mākslu, arhitektūru, domāšanas veidu un uzvešanos. Ateismā augusī pionieru un komjauniešu paaudze tagad uzzināja, ka Dievs ir. Ticības pārdzīvojums un kristietības atjaunošanas jūsma postpadomju zemēs, gāja roku rokā ar iespēju saņemt izsaukumu un vīzu uz tik kāroto Franciju. Jo Francijas dienvidos, Burgundijas reģionā Tezē ciemā kopš 1966. gada darbojas ekumenisks klosteris, kura misija ir izplatīt ticību, vienojot tautas. Klosterī darbojas ar simts klostera brāļu, bet katru vasaru klosteris uzņem ap 100 000 jaunu cilvēku no visas pasaules. Stāsta folkloras pētniece Aīda Rancāne Veļu mielošanas pamatā ir senču kults, kurā eksistē pārliecība, ka cilvēku veido divas substances – ķermenis un gars. Mirušajiem bieži tiek piedēvētas dievišķas īpašības, un viņu piemiņai tiek rīkoti rituāli, kuros lūdz senču garu palīdzību. Daudzās kultūrās mirušo gari tiek uzskatīti par aktīviem ģimenes locekļiem, kas ietekmē pēcnācēju labklājību, ražu, mājlopus vai pat uzņēmējdarbību. Šāda uzskatu sistēma balstās ticībā, ka gars turpina dzīvot pēc nāves un uztur attiecības ar dzīvajiem. Dzīvība un nāve ir vienotā esamības cikla aspekti, un dzīve pēc nāves turpinās senču kultā. Latviešu folklorā un tradīcijās nāves un nemirstības jautājumi tiek risināti ar rituāliem, kas apliecina ticību aizkapa dzīvei. Piemēram, darbības, kas jāveic, lai dvēsele varētu netraucēti aiziet, apliecinātas ticējumā: "Kad mirējs mirst, tad jālaiž durvis jeb logi vaļā, lai dvēsele tek laukā." Bēru mielasta tradīcijās mirušajam tiek klāts galds ar tukšu šķīvi un iedegtu sveci, kas simbolizē viņa paša klātbūtni. Vēl vairāk – mielasta saimnieks ir pats nelaiķis, par ko liecina nelaiķa vārdā izteiktais aicinājums uz bēru mielastu, ēdienkarte, viesu uzvedība un vietas iekārtojums. Ticība pēcnāves dzīvei parādās arī vēsturiskajos avotos. Liecības no 13. gadsimta vēsta, ka mirušos dedzina ar visiem dzīvei vajadzīgajiem priekšmetiem, tostarp lopiem un kalpiem. Ticība pēcnāves eksistencei saglabājusies arī vēlākajos gadsimtos, kad pēc bērēm sadedzināja mirušā mantas. Senču kults visbiežāk sastopams sabiedrībās ar spēcīgām radniecības saitēm, kur senči kļūst par reliģiskās darbības fokusu. Piemēram, Ķīnā Konfūcisma tradīcijā senču kults ir centrālais – mirušie tiek godināti ar rituāliem, ziedojumiem un svētkiem. Japānā Šinto reliģijā senči tiek uzskatīti par kami (garīgas būtnes, svētie spēki), kas var ietekmēt dzīvo likteni. Vjetnamā senču altāri ir katrā mājā, un mirušie tiek uzskatīti par ģimenes aizbildņiem. Daudzās Āfrikas dienvidu un centrālo reģionu kultūrās senči tiek uzskatīti par garu pasaules starpniekiem. Šīs sabiedrības raksturo spēcīga ģimenes struktūra, vertikāla autoritāte un rituāla saikne ar mirušajiem, kas padara senču kultu par nozīmīgu garīgās dzīves daļu. Ticība aktīvai garu pasaulei ļauj mirušajiem turpināt būt par dzimtas locekļiem, kas sniedz labklājību vai soda ar slimībām un neražu. Senču spēks ir divējāds – viņi var gan aizsargāt, gan sodīt, un bez viņu atbalsta dzīvie kļūst ievainojami pret burvībām un ļaunumu. Tātad mirušais paliek dzimtas loceklis, kas piedalās svarīgos dzīves brīžos. Tas saistīts ar seno apbedīšanas tradīciju mājas tuvumā vai pie pavarda. Mirušie tika uzskatīti par sarggariem, kas dzird, redz un saprot vairāk nekā dzīvie. Veļu laiks tradicionālajā kultūrā, kas iestājas rudenī pēc ražas novākšanas, ir pateicības un piemiņas periods, kurā senči tiek godināti ar kapu apmeklējumiem, dvēseļu aicināšanu uz mājām un mielastu klāšanu. Kā vēsta ticējumi, Veļu laikā mirušie sapulcējas zemes apakšā, apspriež notikušo un nākotni. Viņi izklīst pa mājām, pārrauga dzīvo gaitas, noklausās sarunas un sniedz padomus. Veļu vakara rituāli ietver mielastu, telpas izpušķošanu un simbolisku saziņu ar mirušajiem. Lai gan pāreja viņsaulē ir neatgriezeniska, veļu laikā dzīvie simboliski saskaras ar mirušajiem, piedzīvojot viņu klātbūtni emocionāli, nevis maņu līmenī. Gari ir neredzami, taču ticējumos aprakstīti kā melni kamoli, linu saujas vai salīdzināti ar rudens dabas parādībām – miglas vāliem. Viņu klātbūtne nojaušama pēc netiešām zīmēm, piemēram, aizskarta ēdiena uz veļiem klātā galda. Šajās veļu mielošanas tradīcijās iekodēta ne tikai rituāla loģika, bet arī iracionāla domāšana, kas ļauj cilvēkam intuitīvi sazināties ar zemapziņas slāņiem. Rituāli kalpo kā tilts starp redzamo un neredzamo pasauli, starp apzināto un neapzināto, kur senču klātbūtne tiek nevis redzēta, bet izjusta – caur sajūtām, klusumu, simboliem un telpas noskaņu. Tādējādi veļu laiks kļūst par dziļas iekšējas refleksijas brīdi, kurā cilvēks ne tikai godina senčus, bet arī sastopas ar sevi.

Ce 17 octobre, c'est la Journée mondiale de la lutte contre la pauvreté. Et si, pour combattre les inégalités sociales, on commençait par donner à tous les enfants accès aux sciences et aux technologies ? Car l'inclusion passe aussi par l'éducation scientifique.Aujourd'hui encore, les filières scientifiques, technologiques et numériques sont majoritairement fréquentées par des jeunes issus de milieux favorisés. Dans beaucoup d'écoles, les maths et les sciences restent des matières perçues comme abstraites, difficiles, parfois déconnectées de la réalité. Résultat : les élèves les plus fragiles décrochent, souvent faute de sens, alors même que ces compétences sont devenues essentielles dans notre société.C'est pour changer cette donne qu'a été créée La Scientothèque, une ASBL bruxelloise qui existe depuis près de 25 ans. Son objectif : remettre du sens dans l'apprentissage des sciences et ouvrir ces matières à tous les enfants, quel que soit leur milieu. L'association agit au cœur des écoles de devoirs, des quartiers populaires, et dans des établissements à indice socio-économique faible.Leur mission est simple : montrer que les sciences appartiennent à tout le monde. À travers des ateliers interactifs, les jeunes découvrent les matières STEAM (Sciences, Technologie, Ingénierie, Arts et Mathématiques) de manière concrète et ludique. On y aborde le cycle de l'eau, l'énergie, la robotique ou encore le codage informatique. Chaque activité est replacée dans son contexte, liée à des métiers, à des projets de recherche, à la vie réelle.Mais l'action de La Scientothèque ne s'arrête pas là : elle forme aussi les enseignants et leur fournit des outils pédagogiques pour rendre les cours plus vivants, plus inclusifs et plus connectés au monde d'aujourd'hui. BEST OF TST: Three key details inform us that the recent, 2017 and onward, reporting on the UFO/UAP is nothing but a rewriting of the historical narrative using archaic psychological military-intelligence scripts. One, that AATIP spent only $22 million on research between 2012 and 2017, which pales in comparison with government waste, especially for a subject so critical for air safety and national security. Two, the curated cases investigated by the ODNI and DOD-AARO ignore countless credible global reports about the same. Three, the nature of the reporting and investigation are methods of “education” and “debunking” as laid out by the intelligence and military communities back in a 1953 Report called Robertson Panel. Compare that report with statements from the ODNI today:“That the evidence presented on Unidentified Flying Objects shows no indication that these phenomena constitute a direct physical threat to national security...”The ODNI reports says, “UAP continue to represent a hazard to flight safety and pose a possible adversary collection threat,” a standard policy for what cannot be identified; but the conclusion that these are only “potential risks” indicates that the risks “it poses as both a safety of flight hazard and potential adversarial activity,” are only potential. There is no actual threat. “We suggest that these aims may be achieved by an integrated program designed to reassure the public of the total lack of evidence of Inimical forces behind the phenomenon, to train personnel to recognize and reject false indications quickly and effectively, and to strengthen regular channels for the evaluation of and prompt reaction to true indications of hostile measures.”The ODNI report says, “AARO has been established as the DoD focal point for UAP... AARO is the single focal point for all DoD UAP efforts, leading a whole-of-government approach to coordinate UAP collection, reporting, and analysis efforts.” In other words, the ODNI statement is a public relations campaign equivalent to the quote above.“That the national security agencies take immediate steps to strip the Unidentified Flying Objects of the special status they have been given and the aura of mystery they have unfortunately acquired…”This is precisely the goal of AARO and the reclassification of UFO to UAP, which relates to the next line from the 1953 report: “The Panel's concept of a broad educational program integrating efforts of all concerned agencies was that it should have two major aims: training and ‘debunking'.”It says that the, “basis of such education would be actual case histories which had been puzzling at first but later explained... Recent cases are probably much more susceptible to explanation than older ones; first, because of ATIC's experience and, secondly, their knowledge of most plausible explanations.”And this is why the Tic Tac has been so popular; the story is old enough to remain distant from proper investigation, but new enough to provoke interest. With the declaration by Ross Coulthart that the object is Lockheed Martin technology, the UAP movement has fulfilled the 1953 agenda. A recent case with a history, at first seen as puzzling but then later explained. The 1953 report further suggested employing psychologists, including Dr. Hadley Cantril, who wrote the study of the panic that followed the Orson Welles WOW broadcast in 1938, a story that took place in the area where the recent New Jersey drone sightings also occurred. When the Pentagon's UFO Mythology script was leaked in 2025, coupled with the AARO discovery that the USAF gave fake classified material to commanders, it became clear that all the congressional investigations were nothing short of a ruse. The discrediting of the whistleblowers did not so much discredit them as it did the role they served. The 2025 Pentagon UAP report reinforced these revelations. The narrative circle is complete. People got too close to UFOs 75 years ago, so the military and intelligence communities intervened to spread dis and mis information, and also to cover up their own programs. The narrative has been re-introduced in 2017 so that it can be misdirected again.Following this up is the revelation of a black goo substance found by a ship captain in Ohio. Is it in anyway related to the Sukunaarchaeum Mirabile (Sukuna-biko-na)? Analysis indicates that it contains “20 DNA sequences,” one of which was completely novel. My discussion with Manfred may not be as alluring or sexy with Firefighters but there is no denying how Thermal Imaging Technology is probably one of the most under trained areas within the fire service. A lack of proper thermal imaging training in fire departments can lead to firefighters misinterpreting images, over-relying on the technology, and potentially increasing the risk of injury or death. Many departments don't provide enough training, and even when training is offered, it often lacks live fire scenarios and fails to address the limitations and inaccuracies of thermal imagers. My hope is the listeners can gain a bit of knowledge towards TIC's, take it back and start having conversations with their respective crews or department.
