Welcome to this nominally Halloween edition of the podcast. Within/upon(?) this episode, the boys begin by adhering conservatively to my brief, before abandoning all commitment to theme and quarrelling over the frivolous. As per their contract, however, which stipulates that 50% of all oratory intercourse must comply with my "theme assignments", I am obligated to retain their services. 'What is the Lesson here?' I reflexively ask. Context of Lesson: a man keels over and drops a bag of potatoes in an Asda car park. You offer assistance. He tells you he suffers from sciatica and that he's a solicitor, the latter datum striking you as a non-sequitur, but okay. You stash the spuds in the boot. He tells you should you require any judicial aid in future, he will provide it gratis in what begins to resemble Freemasonry. You take his card. "Ignatius Pusk, Practicer at Law" is printed upon it in sanguine calligraphy, the lettering covering the colour spectrum in a design so unappealing it can only suggest total confidence in legal ability. When the time comes to draw up contracts for your burgeoning humour enterprise, you recall Ignatius Pusk. Point of Lesson: Don't.

Funding the Dream on Kickstarter
EP 316 Part 2 Ten ways I screwed up my Kickstarter campaign with Fabio Redivo

Part 2 How to screw up your Kickstarter project with Fabio Redivo. As a continuation of our previous conversation, Fabio outlines the other five things he did to contribute to the failure of his Kickstarter campaign. These are:6 - Not having a playthrough video7 - Not having a PNP8 - Rely on artwork only9 - A lot of money for the first project10 - Count on friends and family6, 7, 8 - Are in the same bucket. Fabio is a graphic designer and works as a brand director for a digital agency in NYC. He used to be in the comic book industry for 8 years as an artist and did a little bit of everything there. He worked for big companies, and self publish, allowing art and design to become a part of his life. When he thought of his game, that's where his focus was. Art and design. He confesses that he had ideas for how the game plays, that it was so simple that he put it on the back burner and laser focused on showing his art style for the cards. He didn't bother to explain how to play with the beautiful cards he was designing. His lesson learned?: WRONG! A game is a game first, if it's not fun, doesn't play well, doesn't matter how good it looks. Art and design enhance the experience, but it doesn't dictate. How he says he will be writing the ideas, testing his next game, going to Unpub events monthly, playtest, playtest, playtest. Then he'll go draw pretty cards.9 - H set 15K for his first project. That looks like a lot of money for a first-time game designer. That would cover print and shipping cost plus the fees for Kickstarter. With 15K he would not make money back at all, just a couple hundreds. That is because he only quoted with AD Magik. He went full premium on the cards, 310gsm, linen finish, black core... So it was costly to produce. He wanted to give the backers high quality, no compromise. But you can't give backers anything if you don't get funded. He also was planning to have 300 cards. It's a lot of cards to produce. 300 cards need custom boxes, and those are very pricey. The whole budget was a disaster. In the other end of the high price, he wanted to sell games + custom cards for $100. He quickly realized that nobody will spend THAT kind of money on a nobody's game. Lesson: Start small. Have a fun thematic card game that doesn't cost much to print. Quote an MVP and work your way up with stretch goals to make the game better. Be aware of press sheets to reduce the cost of productions. 280gsm blue core is a good start. Have fewer pledges tiers. Keep goal lower than 5k and game price lower than $20. 10 - Friends and family are great, but will not get you far. At all. AT ALL. Many friends and family members didn't even bother to check his page. Or they shared on facebook but didn't donate a buck. Or forgot about it. So counting on pledging and marketing through friends and family was a bust.Lesson: DON'T count on friends and family. Simple as that! These are all great lessons for a first-time creator to learn. We are grateful to Fabio for his willingness to share his failure to help others succeed.

Here are Marsha's tips for help you prepare for your next job search: Keep your own file of reviews and accolades Don’t wait until you’re unemployed to start networking Keep your LinkedIn profile active When your job ends, take time to mourn the loss and acknowledge your emotions, then let it go Teaching is a great source of career satisfaction Proactive career management means stepping up to a challenge Thank you for listening to Find Your Dream Job. We appreciate your support!   Opening and closing music for Find Your Dream Job provided by Freddy Trujillo, www.freddytrujillo.com. Transcript Mac Prichard: This is Find Your Dream Job, the podcast that helps you get hired, have the career you want and make a difference in life. I'm Mac Prichard, your host and publisher of Mac's List. On today's bonus episode we're sharing exclusive content from our new book. Land Your Dream Job in Portland (and Beyond). Land Your Dream Job in Portland (and Beyond) compiles all of our best job search tips and career management tools into one simple, easy-to-read guide. It's the definitive tool kit for anyone looking for meaningful work. The book also includes special contributions from an array of job search experts and today you'll hear from one of them. Here's Marsha Warner, owner of Career Factors, reading her contribution Lesson Learned By the Recently Unemployed. Marsha Warner: Recently, a client shared what he wished he'd done before he found himself on the job hunt. Here's a list of best practices for career maintenance that are applicable to everyone. He said, "I wish I'd kept of copy of my performance reviews." Lesson: Keep your own file of reviews and accolades. They are helpful to promote accomplishment statement, review for interviews and remind yourself of achievements when doubts creep in. He said, "I wish I'd continued to network and develop outside contacts." Lesson: Don't wait until you're unemployed to start networking. Stay in touch with colleagues, classmates, ex-bosses, other parents, fellow volunteers, and so on. He said, "I wish I'd joined LinkedIn earlier on." Lesson: Keep your LinkedIn profile active. It's a tool for recruiters, a way to stay connected and a source of information for professional development. Spend at least an hour a week updating your profile, reconnecting, joining interest groups and staying current. He said, "I wish I had not taken it so personally. I let this lay-off really get to me." Lesson: When your job ends, take time to mourn the loss and acknowledge your emotions, then let it go. Evaluate the job market, then take up your career toolbox, and go forth. Know that when you're part of a reduction in force, it's a business decision not a personal decision. Take charge of your career with a personal marketing plan. Manage what you can control, and let what you cannot go. He said, "I wish I had reached out and passed on my professional knowledge to younger colleagues before I left." Lesson: Teaching is a great source of career satisfaction. Some companies have formal programs for knowledge transfer. Seek them out. The effort will be worth the reward you'll feel in sharing your knowledge with others. He said, "I wish I had paid more attention to my own development and taken advantage of challenges that would give me more exposure." Lesson: Proactive career management means stepping up to a challenge. Volunteering for projects and committees or getting trained for new skills are ways to grow. They'll get you noticed by your boss and bring greater satisfaction to your daily work. Ask yourself at the end of each day, what did I learn today? He said, "I wish I'd ask for help early on in my job search. Things have changed so much, I feel a bit lost." Lesson: Feeling isolated and lost is common. A career coach can offer expert information and advice about the job market and how to put your best foot forward. Portland is blessed with great career resources including local colleges, private coaches and job search support groups. Help is available. Be wise, and ask for it. Mac Prichard: If you're looking for more expert advice and insider tips like what you just heard, check out Land Your Dream Job in Portland (and Beyond). You'll find everything you need to get a great job whether you're in Portland, Oregon, Portland, Maine, or anywhere in between.
