Episode 95: Simon Phillips. This is the definitive deep dive into the legendary career of Simon Phillips, one of the most influential drummers in the world. In this long form conversation, Simon talks about his work with Toto, The Who, Judas Priest, Hiromi, Protocol, Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce, Pete Townshend, Big Country, Stanley Clarke, Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera, and goes all the way back to his teenage session years in the UK with his dad. This episode covers his technique, sound, gear, studio approach, compositions, touring stories, engineering background, and the experiences that shaped his career. Simon tells the story of stepping into Toto after the passing of Jeff Porcaro and what it took to honor Jeff's legacy while still bringing his own sound, groove, and musical identity to the band. He breaks down his years touring and recording with The Who, including the 1989 anniversary tour and his approach to Keith Moon's parts. We also go deep into his early session years with Judas Priest and the making of Sin After Sin, including the double bass drumming that influenced an entire generation of metal drummers. Simon talks about his long running musical connection with Hiromi and the creation of Hiromi's Trio Project, the interplay that developed between them, and stories of his brotherhood with contrabass guitar legend Anthony Jackson. Simon shares the evolution of his writing and bandleading with Protocol, including how he builds compositions from drum ideas and how he made the project happen. We go into how he records drums and stories of so many of his ensembles. We explore his open handed and ambidextrous technique, his approach to tom and cymbal layouts, drum tuning, how he builds his drum tones in the studio, and his engineering background from his early years working in studios. This episode is ideal for drummers, musicians, audio engineers, producers, and fans of Toto, Jeff Porcaro, The Who, Keith Moon, Judas Priest, heavy metal drumming, Mike Oldfield, progressive rock, fusion, Hiromi, Anthony Jackson, and anyone who wants to understand how a legendary drummer built a world class career. Simon also talks about rebuilding after losing his home and studio in the Thomas Fire, what inspires him today, and how he continues to grow as a drummer and composer. For Episode 33 of Live Music & Me, our guest was the Scottish singer/songwriter Kirsten Adamson. All of the chat on this one was 100% off the cuff, which made it feel even more natural than normal. Kirsten's recollections took us across every conceivable genre you could think of from Nashville country to MOR/Heavy rock ( even Muse got a namecheck!)- and we also had a couple of nods towards Big Country which was rather nice. There was also a first when the last gig/first gig answer had a direct overlap, AND Kirsten gave us a new gig category question to ask our future guests :-) Because it was off the cuff, Kirsten wasn't willing to commit to her fav live album without thinking it through a bit more, however am sure her post podcast recommendation will be worth the wait …It's been a great year for Kirsten, ( album feedback excellent and packed gig venues), and both are very well deserved. Until next time - enjoy, and stay safe
It's the last Episode of Season 4!And I think I've finally answered one of my opening questions - why did America make our grocery stores the way we did? As soon as Americans could, we ignored the food on the ground (unless it was familiar like deer or duck or pigeon) and instead brought our own provisions. But when you do that, and don't develop local talent - the selection end up terribly limited. So now in modern America - we seem to be attempting to make up for lost time... by making our grocery store selection even larger.Check out this last episode before I go study the terrible food of war.Music Credit: Fingerlympics by Doctor TurtleShow Notes: https://thehistoryofamericanfood.blogspot.com/Email: TheHistoryofAmericanFood at gmail dot comThreads: @THoAFoodInstagram: @THoAFood& some other socials... @THoAFood

Tom Will is a poet who has, among other things, written Pale Townie (Apocalypse Confidential, 2023), a 999-line poem which keeps the heroic couplet end rhymes from Pale Fire (Nabokov/Shade) intact, while transforming the story into something quite different, very Tom Will. He's also recently published American Cats Are in a Big Country (2024, Farthest Heaven), a collection of 73 poems, all of which are very much worth your time and love.We got to talk about the process of writing Pale Townie, why limericks are so funny, prose poems, clunk, Tom's future projects, and a lot more.Tom tends to pace while talking. I decided to keep these parts and leave them unedited, because the full Tom Will experience involves periods of muffled audio and sudden clear exclamations. To deny these parts would be to deny the fullness of communication.Find Tom's books here: https://many.bio/thomaswillTom's RecommendationsFarthest Heaven - https://farthestheaven.com/Apocalypse Confidential - https://apocalypse-confidential.com/Wallace Barker - https://wallacebarker.com/Hayden Church - So What - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FG1Y6P29Dustin Cole - Find After Sunstone on the Farthest Heaven website (https://farthestheaven.com/)Anna Krivalopova - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CCW2HGMXSoft Union magazine - https://softunion.online/Adam Johnson - Cialis, Verdi, Gin, Jag - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B86SK97YOFFICEPARKS - Noam Hessler - Coming out soon with Farthest Heaven (https://farthestheaven.com/)!VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATIONJack has published a novel called Tower!Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Tower-Jack-BC-ebook/dp/B0CM5P9N9M/ref=monarch_sidesheetThe first nine chapters of Tower are available for free here: jackbc.substack.comOur Patreon: www.patreon.com/TheBookClubfromHellJack's Substack: jackbc.substack.comLevi's website: www.levioutloud.comwww.thebookclubfromhell.comJoin our Discord (the best place to interact with us): discord.gg/ZMtDJ9HscrWatch us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0n7r1ZTpsUw5exoYxb4aKA/featuredX: @bookclubhell666Jack on X: @supersquat1Levi on X: @optimismlevi

Harrison and Sterling Kothmann grew up around ranching, construction, and heavy equipment. This upbringing gave them the knowledge to build a successful equipment dealership and rental company, even though that wasn't their plan. They both took a little different paths in life and they both ended up getting the skills they needed to complement each other well in business. While Sterling learned a lot of skills at business school Harrison got a lot of real world experience in the construction industry and ended up starting the business. They've both used their skills to grow and expand the business through the years. Like a lot of business owners they learned a lot through trial and error and asking a lot of questions. The “I”s have it! And Lightnin' Licks Radio has the “I”s. Ten of them to be exact. Jay and Deon discuss their favorite vinyl records filed under the letter I. It's intimate and intense. It's immersive and inspiring though, ironically, they're idiots.--In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-fifth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru H, so naturally, they went with I.The “I” mixtape:[SIDE I-1] (1) INTHEWHALE – Animals (2) The Ice Man's Band – People Make the World Go ‘Round (3) Icehouse – Walls (4) Ice Cube – Down for Whatever (5) Instant Funk – Never Let It Go Away [SIDE I-2] (1) Donnie Iris – Joking (2) The Impressions – I'm Loving Nothing (3) The Icicle Works – Starry Blue Eyed Wonder (4) Weldon Irvine – Morning Sunshine (5) Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain [END]Sonic Contributors to the thirty-fifth episode of Lightnin' Licks Radio podcast include: Lee Moses, Brothers Johnson, Holland-Dozier-Holland, James Todd Smith. Robin Millar doesn't let anything hold him back. The man is blind, and yet he became one of the most successful producers in the UK in the 80s. His biggest claim to fame is shepherding a young Sade to two world-beating albums (her first two). Working together to find her unique sound made him the go-to guy for "sophistopop" and brought him a ton of success. He did the first few Everything But the Girl albums, the Fine Young Cannibals' debut, the first Colin Hay album and even scratched his rock itch by doing the third Big Country album. Oh, and he discovered Phoebe Bridgers and Cigarettes After Sex. And he was appointed CBE. And knighted. And, again, he's blind. You won't believe this one! www.robinmillar.org.uk/music www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod
Baxie speaks with Steve Smith of The Vapors! While most people remember The Vapors for their classic New Wave hit “Turning Japanese” (1980), their two studio albums were loaded with great songs that deserved equal attention. In 2016 The Vapors reformed after a 35-year hiatus. And this March they will release their latest album “Wasp in a Jar”. And it's exceptionally good! Steve talks about the new record, being discovered by Bruce Foxton from The Jam, and about getting back in the road. The Vapors will be coming to the Bosch Theater at the Wang Center in. Boston on August 1st as part of the Lost 80's Live tour—-which includes Big Country, Flock of Seagulls, General Public, Josie Cotton, Belouis Some, and China Crisis! Coming Monday on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and on the Rock102 app! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee!

In late 1993, after Roney Dean Harper's confession to the murder of Lou Goettsch, discoveries of human bones seemed to be commonplace in the Big County, an area of Texas of which Abilene is the heart. With every set of remains unearthed, detectives with the Abilene Police Department, an agency that had no jurisdiction over any of the discoveries, sat tight and waited for the identification of one of their missing people. At the top of that list was Lou Goettsch, since Harper's admission had heated the case back up. Neither the Big Country bones nor Roney Dean Harper gave the answers the cops were looking for.If you have any information about the disappearance of Lou Allen Goettsch, please contact Abilene Crime Stoppers at 800-868-8477.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X.
