Episode 443 -  A Different Type of Alcoholic   Today we have Kelly, she is 46 from Minneapolis, MN and took her last drink on June 18th, 2023.   Join us Saturday August 26th in Boston, MA for a day of service in collaboration with The Phoenix.  Learn more about the event here.   Check out our sponsor Go Brewing. Use the code ELEVATOR for 15% off.   [02:57] Highlights from Paul:   When saying the word “alcoholic”, these images, and thoughts commonly come to mind:   Living under a Bridge. Brown paper bag. Homeless. Hopeless. Unemployed.   Some of this is accurate but studies show only 5% of alcoholics fit these descriptions. The other 95% are high functioning, tend to be high earners, more educated, are healthier and have more stable relationships than average.   With the estimated 452 million alcoholics that don't fit the stereotypical description of an alcoholic, this takes the saying you are not alone to a new level.   We justify or benchmark our drinking according to what an alcoholic looks like. I'm not that bad, I have a job, and money in the bank. We surround ourselves with other drinkers who don't fit the alcoholic stereotype to solidify our own positions on the addiction scale. Now a classic trait of an addiction is that we are blind to where we actually are with the addiction process. The hole you find yourself in is probably deeper than you think. My recommendation is to stop digging. You CAN put the shovel down. Another classic trait of an addiction is the progression. We have 452 million alcoholics on the globe who are not living under a bridge or drinking out of brown paper bag yet.   Better Help:  www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored   [09:30] Paul introduces Kelly:   Kelly took her last drink on June 18th, 2023, and has 6 days at the time of this recording. She is 46 and lives in Minneapolis. She leads software development teams for a living. Kelly loves the outdoors and enjoys running, hiking, and paddleboarding. She enjoys movies, music, and museums as well.   Kelly first tried alcohol at a party in 9th grade. Drinking was not something that she wanted to do but she succumbed to peer pressure. A year later she started spending time visiting her brother at college, and she enjoyed hanging out with him and his friends and started drinking more frequently. It was a good escape from the abuse she was dealing with at home.   In college Kelly was drinking and dealing with an eating disorder. She worked hard to overcome her bulimia but then her drinking ramped up after that. After college she married a fellow engineer, and they would drink heavily together. After they started having children and settling down, her husband was able to quit the excessive drinking, but Kelly was not.   While raising her children, Kelly was able to cut back on drinking and started putting rules around it. Her relationship wasn't going well, and Kelly was going out more frequently and drinking almost daily. After a few drinking and driving charges, Kelly began to realize that she could no longer control it. Over time she recognized that she was starting to isolate more and then would go out to bars to find connection with other people.   Kelly has been able to have more gaps in drinking days over time and has been acquiring tools throughout the process. She is recognizing that she needs to treat her sobriety like a baby and nurture it daily. Each morning she meditates and uses the Reframe app. She attends AA meetings frequently and has recently found a therapist to help her with her childhood trauma.   Kelly's plan for recovery moving forward: keep doing things that make her feel uncomfortable, attending more meetings, and new meditation practices.   Kelly's parting piece of guidance: keep trying, be open to new resources.   Cafe RE  Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY to waive the set-up fee. Being unemployed [for a third time] in New York crushed me and this time around, the additional bump in benefits, because of the pandemic, was gone. There were more rules and monitoring than before. I was embarrassed by being unemployed at my “big old age” in my late 30s. But after every storm, there's supposedly a rainbow. It would take me another year to see that. Tonja Stidhum, a writer, director, and producer, whose work I knew from The Root, a Black-centric online magazine, was vocal about her unemployment on Twitter. Ms. Kristina Blake is making a name for herself. But it may not all be for good reasons. Who is she?Watch Part 1 VideoShe's a "content creator", or aspiring content creator, who at the time of this interview had been unemployed for nearly a year. To add to that, she resides in one of Uptown Charlotte's premier residential towers. But while most people in her situation would just go and seek full time employement, Ms. Blake has a different plan. After her first successful campaign raised $6,000, she decided to go back to the well, or her followers, to ask for a substantial donation. She wants $30,000.In this interview, I ask her just who the f#@k she thinks she is. I also ask what type of jobs is she willing to do.One of her reasons for requesting donations is to buy equipment needed to create the content she wants to create. Equipment such as a camera and a laptop. My response, just use your phone. In my opinion, the good content creators work with what they have. Since the papers didn't want to run the same images, there was a strong need for fresh wild art and multiple strong images from the top stories of the day. Women often deal with feelings of insecurity and unworthiness, yet the lives of these women show that Jesus values us, wants a relationship with us, and can use us to further His kingdom. In her warm, conversational style, Rachael ties together her life experience, knowledge of the Scriptures, and her compassion for women to encourage us and enable us to become the women God has called us to be. Hey friends, welcome to the Hearing Jesus Podcast.  Do you sometimes doubt if you are truly hearing God's voice or if it's really your own? Do you wonder how you can know the difference? Do you struggle to feel confident in your relationship with God and what He says in his word? Do you sometimes feel stagnant or like you hit a wall in your spiritual life? Hey, I'm your host, Rachael Groll: missionary, author, pastor, and life coach. And I have been there. I, too, was doubting God's voice in my own life. I, too, felt insecure about the things I thought God might be calling me to do. I wanted to make a difference in the world and be obedient to what God was calling me to do, but I wasn't quite sure how to figure out what exactly that was. I kept telling myself that I was wasting time trying to figure it out or waiting for Him to show me. Or that I wasn't qualified to do the things I thought He might be telling me to do. The answer for me was found in the pages of the Bible, as I learned how to understand what it was actually saying. If you are ready to grow in your faith and to step confidently into the calling God has for you, then join me as we dig deep into God's word so you can learn to live out your faith in your everyday life. Friend, you are loved, you are cherished, and you are His. Welcome to the first ever At The Flicks appeal. This one is very personal, and I will hand over to Leslie to explain what the appeal is for and its importance. Thank you for reading. “Hi, my name is Leslie. I am and have been a passionate nurse since qualifying in 1981. I want to give back to nursing by promoting the well-being of nurses as well as the projects they are initiating to improve the health and well-being of their patients. In 2023 I am raising funds for a project in Cape Town named Robin Trust. I founded it 30 years ago as a Non Profit Organisation (Charity) which came out of my own daughter's illness. Sadly my daughter had a genetic illness, Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD), resulting in profound disabilities and limiting her life. I was a single mother so used my nursing knowledge to train a carer to provide Robyn with the help she needed while I was at work as a nurse. It worked well for me and the carer. I had intentionally looked for someone who was loving but due to circumstances did not have a job. The amazing person who filled the role came from Khayelitsha – a poor township near cape Town. To my surprise I started to get calls from carers wanting to work and from people needing a carer. From a small beginning Robin Trust has grown and 30 years later it is an established charity offering home-based care, dementia and frail care, step-down (sub-acute) care and trains carers. From the beginning the carers have been the main beneficiaries. Unemployed and previously disadvantaged people are trained as carers undertaking their theory and practical course at the training school at the Robin Trust. On completion of their 3 month programme some are employed by Robin Trust or other Care Agencies, Frail Cares or in private homes. This provides much needed employment in Cape Town, where the unemployment is 26.9%. Currently the home-based service alone employs approximately 200 carers. At Robin Trust most income is generated by the services provided with the surplus going back into the service as well as a bursary fund which subsidises students training as carers. Therefore for new developments it is necessary to raise the required funds. Currently fundraising is required to develop a facility to provide palliative care. Robin Trust would like provide two beds funded by the Robin Trust for people in financial need near the end of their lives. Care provided will include excellent, compassionate nursing from the trained registered nurses and care team, pain relief and respite for families. I learnt during Robyn's illness how vital this service is and the support it gives to the individual as well as their family. This will benefit students training at the organisation giving them valuable experience in palliative care while extending the services provided by the Robin Trust. To offer this needed service Robin Trust requires the funding to renovate and kit out two rooms to the standards required by the registering health authority. Once this is done the on-going costs will be met by the Robin Trust. The set-up cost per bed is £3,000. I will be running in my second event on the 3 September 2023 and extending my distance to 10km. Please support me by donating to the Robin Trust project to equip two beds for individuals requiring end of life care.”

Hey, sweetest Vortex. Sooo, Elle quit her job - and we are celebrating with a big ol' ramble on the beauty (& scariness) of interrupting our own patterns. Elle gives us the beautiful details of what it feels like to enter this fertile void of transition - and we speak on how wild it is to make your life a totally blank canvas ON PURPOSE. We chat about some of the magical, mystical ways Elle wants to paint her canvas, and also leave all the room in the world to hold the uncertainty and questions. We touch on releasing the need to be understood fully by family and society as a whole when making non-traditional career moves and veering off the beaten path. In the second half of this convo, we explore a broader deep-dive about the power of noticing and consciously shifting our patterns. If the Universe is sending you the same situation over and over, that's your sign to PAY ATTENTION. Life will try to teach you the same lesson again and again... until you get it. Are you listening loud enough to notice and make shifts where you're being asked to? We would LOVE to have you join us for a single Meet Your Magic session! Upcoming sessions include: Voice & Throat Chakra Activation (June 11th), Human Design with Erin Panzarella (June 18th), and How to Channel (June 25th).
