Jerry spoke to Dr Laura Bambrick of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. ICTU says the government has included a ‘stealth cut’ to the jobseeker’s pay-related benefit in its social welfare bill. Congress says it discovered that the jobseeker’s pay-related benefit won’t be included in the general rate increase to core social welfare payments announced in last month’s budget. ICTU says this isn’t faire as workers are paying extra PRSI to fund this new payment, which is intended to insure them against a collapse in income in the first weeks after losing their job.

A surprising trend in the job market is worrying economists. College-educated people are making up a larger subset of people who are unemployed for six months or longer. Automation, shrinking industries and federal cuts play a role. In the Loop digs into the issue with New York Times reporter Noam Scheiber and DePaul University professor of economics Brian Thompson. As Parliament prepares to resume, a Radio-Canada report says pipelines are nowhere on the Carney cabinet's agenda. That puts Ottawa at odds with Alberta and Saskatchewan, where Premiers Danielle Smith and Scott Moe have been clear: if the federal government wants energy projects to move forward, it must repeal or rewrite C-69, lift the West Coast tanker ban, and scrap the emissions cap. Guest host Kris Sims is joined by Toronto Sun columnist Brian Lilley to break down the politics and the math. Lilley explains why companies won't propose major projects under today's rules — pointing to regulatory uncertainty and past cancellations like Northern Gateway and Energy East — and warns shelving pipelines now would inflame Western alienation and damage national unity. They also dig into the economics: stalled investment, lost revenue, and Canada's widening GDP-per-capita gap with the U.S. Lilley argues predictable rules — not pauses and reviews — are what industry needs across oil and gas, autos, steel and telecom. Finally, the show tackles youth unemployment and immigration policy. After Doug Ford suggested young people should “look harder” for work, Lilley notes Ontario's youth jobless rate is elevated and entry-level markets are squeezed by the temporary foreign worker stream, expanded work rights for international students, and rapid inflows of work-eligible newcomers. Many student loan borrowers are falling behind again, and the impact is more than financial.A recent change in federal law has reshaped student loan repayment, and as collections ramp back up, millions are seeing their credit scores drop. If you're feeling the weight of repayment, you're not alone. Neile Simon joins us today with practical steps to help you regain control.Neile Simon is a Certified Credit Counselor with Christian Credit Counselors (CCC), an underwriter of Faith & Finance.Major Changes in Federal Student Loan RepaymentIn early July, sweeping legislation restructured federal student loan repayment options. Borrowers now face only two choices:Standard Repayment Plan: Lasting 10 to 25 yearsRepayment Assistance Plan (RAP): A 30-year plan with payments based on 1% to 10% of the borrower's income, with a minimum of $10 per monthWhile RAP may seem like a helpful tool, the new law eliminated borrower-friendly plans such as the SAVE plan and many income-driven repayment options. For borrowers who are unemployed or experiencing hardship, this is a significant loss. The end of pandemic-era protections, including deferments, has left many unprepared and falling behind.Adding to the challenge, federal collections resumed on May 5, signaling a firm end to COVID-19 relief. The result? A wave of financial instability. The Credit Score CrisisThe fallout from these changes has been swift and painful. According to AP News, in the first quarter of this year alone:Over 2.2 million borrowers experienced a credit score drop of more than 100 points.Over 1 million borrowers experienced a decrease of more than 150 points. This sharp decline has made it difficult for individuals to secure new credit. Car loans, mortgages, and even rental approvals are now being denied. With limited disposable income, many are forced to choose between paying rent, student loans, or credit cards.More people are relying on credit cards just to cover essentials like groceries and gas. It's a cycle that only deepens their debt and financial stress. How Credit Counseling Can HelpWhile Christian Credit Counselors doesn't directly manage student loans, they play a vital role for those overwhelmed by mounting credit card balances. Neely explains how nonprofit credit counseling agencies bring clarity and relief:One-on-One Counseling: Certified counselors review your debt, income, and budgetDebt Management Plan (DMP): Unsecured debts are consolidated into a single monthly paymentCreditor Negotiation: Lowered interest rates (often between 1% and 12%), reduced monthly payments, and elimination of late feesCommitment to Repayment: This is not a loan, bankruptcy, or debt settlement. I left because I knew something wasn’t right at the time. What followed was a search for a business idea that took me through yoga, ceramics, and creative experiments in remote Tasmania, all of which eventually led to my podcast and business, Unemployed and Afraid. Host Andrea Marquez unpacks how I redefined risk not as betting it all on one big idea, but as giving myself permission to experiment, try, pivot and start again. You’ll hear how I used creative detours to find clarity, why walking away can be the smartest move and how I turned vulnerability into my growth strategy. If you’re stuck waiting for the perfect idea, this episode will show you how experimentation can be a powerful and intentional part of building something meaningful. Losing a job isn't just about missing a paycheck — it can unravel your sense of identity, safety, and purpose. For many women, especially those navigating life on their own, job loss brings a cascade of emotional and practical challenges. But within that uncertainty also lies an opportunity for reinvention, reflection, and storytelling. This episode explores what it means to experience—and rise from—such a pivotal life shift. In this episode, I sit down with writer and educator Desiree Groft, author of the debut novel Girl Unemployed. While fictional in format, Desiree's book is deeply inspired by her real-life experience of unemployment during the Great Recession — and the resilience it took to rebuild from the ground up. Listen in as Desiree and I talk about: Why she chose to write her story through the lens of fiction instead of memoir How living in a historical NYC women's hotel became a character in the book The emotional and mental toll of unemployment, especially as a single woman The concept of “holding both grief and hope” during difficult transitions How the book's cover design became a metaphor for rewriting life's rough drafts The importance of finding community — not just for children, but for adults too Why traditional publishing didn't define her journey as an author Desiree's story is one of grit, reinvention, and honoring the messy in-between seasons of life. If you've ever faced a detour in your career, identity, or purpose — this conversation will resonate deeply. Be sure to listen to the full episode, then grab your copy of Girl Unemployed and follow Desiree's work. You'll find the links in the show notes — and don't forget to share this episode with a friend who needs to hear it. And if this conversation sparks something in you, consider sharing your own story — because your experiences have the power to connect, heal, and inspire others too. StanLand is a five-part satirical audio series featuring Rhea Seehorn, Bobby Moynihan, Steve Little, Timm Sharp, Jon Hamm, John Waters, and more. When cynical podcaster Melanie Hughes (Rhea Seehorn) vanishes without a trace, the only clue is her abandoned recorder, discovered by the side of a road in Poolesville, Maryland. What's on the tape? A story that begins with a dusty Ikea wardrobe… and ends in a magical realm slowly being swallowed up by fast food chains, retail shopping, and vape stores. Enter Zyngia: once a land of wonder, ruled by a talking lion (Steve Little), now a cautionary tale of what happens when fantasy meets modern consumerism. At the center of it all? Stan Little (Bobby Moynihan). Unemployed. Unremarkable. Possibly the last person you'd want on a magical quest. And yet… here we are.Equal parts epic, absurd, and uncomfortably familiar.
