It’s only November but the lads don’t have a whole lot to be looking forward to so they start discussing the Christmas adverts that have already made an appearance on tv screens. They then turn their attention to sport and the relationship LGBTQ+ people have with sport and some of the queer trailblazers who’ve paved the way on the pitch. They also give their hot takes on chaotic PE teachers, rank the gayest sports in existence and do an interview with Luke Nolan, one of the co-founders of Na Gaeil Aeracha (IG: @rainbowgaels), Ireland’s first explicitly queer-inclusive GAA team - we love to see it. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Inclusive sports in Ireland are not new, teams exist in Rugby and soccer that are LGBTQ+ founded. The GAA has, until now, not had an LGBTQ+ club. 'Na Gaeil Aeracha' Is a new national club open to anyone but created to be inclusive. Founders, Luke Nolan and Karl Shannon, joined us on the show to talk about creating the club.
This week Kev hears from inside the Wexford football camp following Paul Galvin's shock departure We hear from Tommy O'Mahony about the NBA Finals and the struggle to get back playing back home. And we hear from Luke Nolan, one of the co-founders of Ireland's first LGBTQ+ GAA club.
I chat with my longtime friend Luke Nolan about things he wishes he'd done differently in his parenting, breast-milk composition, and many other random parenting issues.

Welcome to part 2 of episode 31 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. In part 2, I continue to converse with Jacob Timpano about his football journey. Thanks again to Jacob and his family for allowing me into their home, my respect and thanks goes out to them. Please enjoy the second part to episode 31.Music by Luke Nolan
Welcome everyone to episode 31 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. It is always a delight to upload an interview, so you the listener can enjoy the interviewee that I am interviewing. Hopefully my technique is incrementally improving and people are enjoying the people that are being recorded. Each person that is interviewed has multiple memories and thoughts on their journey and it is a privilege to record their memories and being able to share them with you the listener. I sincerely appreciate your support. Additionally I must keep thanking infrequently Luke Nolan who recorded the musical parts to the podcast. This episode's interviewee at 33 is a young man but once you listen to the two parts of this interview you will understand why I wanted to interview him, as he has amassed a large amount of footballing experiences.Jacob Timpano started his career at Fernhill Junior Soccer Club and after a few years he then started representing his region successfully via the Illawarra and Wollongong Wolves junior set ups. Most people in the Illawarra know his journey in terms of playing senior football at the Wolves and Sydney FC and representing and captaining his country in the younger tiers of the Australian team set ups. Add in his different levels of coaching experiences and it was fantastic to hear his version of events and the way he sees his career up until 2019.Around the Illawarra Jacob is well known and well respected by many, myself included. I found him to be humble and pragmatic about his amazing career. Yes he had downs in his career but during the interview I was further impressed as he has a fantastic perspective on life and what has transpired. He looks back rightly with pride and objectivity. His love for the Wolves has been lifelong and his contribution has been immense. It was a joy to listen to Jacob and I hope you enjoy the first part of this episode.
Welcome to Episode 23 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. Apologies for the infrequency of the podcasts at times but as I have stated previously when I record the interviews I will try and upload them as quickly as possible. The football season slows me down somewhat but I will always endeavour to upload an interview every couple of weeks or so.On another note, I was fortunate enough to be approached by Football Nation Radio or FNR a couple of weeks ago. I have now been lucky enough for this podcast to be broadcast on their station on Monday nights at 7pm. Thanks to David at FNR and the rest of the FNR team who have given this podcast a go. Hopefully it goes well as one of the objectives of this podcast was to document people’s history and share our rich soccer/football history in the region. You never know where your interviews will end up and in this episode it was no different. This episode's interviewee had remarkable football career which started in Blackburn England. In his teens, which was in the 1940s, he played with his school St Albans and the Bangor Boys Club. It was here he started playing in representative teams as part of the National Association of Boys’ Clubs, culminating in his selection for the England Boys’ Clubs team. In the late 1940s and most of the 1950s Wilf Billington played professionally with Rochdale, Blackburn, Workington and Oxford. He then came out to Australia and played for Balgownie, South Coast United and had a very brief stint with Melbourne Hellas.Wilf is in his late eighties now but still has a very good memory. He recalls different bits and pieces about his professional career including being managed by Bill Shankly while at Workington. There is some material that comes out of left field such as the new movie about the Manchester City German goalkeeper, the Suez Canal, skiing in Cyprus (Mount Troodos) and the Beatles tour in Australia. A big thanks and respect to Wilf for doing the interview and his son Sean who organised this interview. Thanks to all the listeners of this podcast and the supporters of the social media pages it is greatly appreciated. Please note there is some slight profanity in this interview, not enough to warrant an explicit rating but for people who need this information I have supplied it. So once again please enjoy this interview.Music by Luke Nolan
Welcome to Episode 20 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. Thank you to the many fantastic listeners from all over Australia who have given me feedback in the past few weeks. I am truly surprised about the kind words from people who I know personally and from people who I do not know. The podcast is not about the metrics but it is nice to know the people who do listen are enjoying the interviews. This episode's interviewee has played the game at many clubs and with different levels of success. On a cold winter night at Judy Masters Oval in the mid 1990s Tony Bosevski severely injured his knee in a tackle with Mike Hollifield. He was only in his early twenties and this looked like it would curtail his input into the game. But Tony went down the refereeing pathway and after a few years ascended to the highest level in our region, an IPL first grade grand final.Tony is a great guy, very calming and genuinely loves being part of the soccer community. In the last few years he has gone back to playing amateur soccer after finishing refereeing. I immensely enjoyed the time conversing with him and his insights into playing and refereeing were fascinating. Please enjoy this interview.Music by Luke Nolan
Welcome to Episode 19 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. It is a pleasure to have you downloading this episode of the podcast, I sincerely appreciate it. Thank you to all the people who support this podcast and the social media pages. This episode’s interviewee followed a soccer route that has been followed by many boys and girls in Australia over the past few decades, the soccer representative team route. The travel, extra sessions, the tracksuits, the sacrifice and the ultimate objective to excel and ascend to the highest level. That is an Australian representative youth team and or a contract with a European club.Victor Costabile nearly reached the summit of this representative team route. Firstly he had three months with Leeds United as a 15 year old, which did not lead to a contract. He then came back to Australia and ended up a year or so later becoming a member of the Australian Joeys squad, which is the U17s Australian national team. After losing the Oceania qualifier to New Zealand and missing out on a U17 World Cup in Egypt, Victor then returned to the Illawarra Premier League where he went on playing in a series of successful teams. The insight Victor gives about his journey was fantastic and it was very enjoyable chatting to him about his soccer journey, especially his insight into Casey De Bruin. I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I enjoyed putting this together.Music by Luke Nolan
Welcome to Episode 17 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. It is a delight to have you downloading this episode of the podcast, I sincerely appreciate it. Slowly but surely this exercise of collecting the Illawarra’s oral soccer history is coming together. I encourage any of the listeners to contact me if they have any potential interviews that I should be undertaking. I am following up several leads but I am grateful if people think I should be following up additional suggested interviews. This episode’s interviewee started his soccer journey in Holland and in his early teens he came out to Australia in 1951 with his parents. His transition into a new country and community was slightly better than his parents as he went to school and played soccer for “Tech” and the Balgownie Soccer Club in the U14s and U16s. He then went to Fernhill Soccer Club in the local league for a year and then returned to Balgownie for a few years in the State League predominantly in the reserves.Normally this would be a very good soccer journey in itself but not for John Vlietstra who came back into the game via junior clubs (Figtree and Balgownie) and additionally on the Illawarra Junior Soccer Association committee. His time at Balgownie JSC (along with many other committee members, volunteers, sponsors and community help) brought about tremendous change to the facilities at Judy Masters, many of these changes remain today. His next step was even bigger when he became the secretary of the Wollongong City Wolves for a decade working along side Laurie Kelly, Jack Zanier, John Fleming and many other wonderful Wolves people. After this appointment and subsequent resignation a decade later his soccer journey subsided but his community involvement and volunteering did not, being involved on the Wollongong Sportsground Trust and the Dutch Australian Society. John is a man who I deeply respect and enjoyed interviewing. It was a pleasure being around him to note down some of his experiences and again I publicly thank John for his time and knowledge. That is it for now, please enjoy this episode.Music by Luke Nolan
Welcome to Episode 16 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. As always I am delighted to host this podcast as it gives me the opportunity to speak to a variety of people within our vibrant and dynamic soccer/football community. And thank you to all the listeners that support this podcast and all the people that follow the social media pages. I am amazed at the support and at the depth to our history in the community. I will keep posting and searching as there are many more items that need to be found and posted. This episode’s interviewee started his soccer journey in Sydney before he came to the Illawarra in the early 1980s as a 23 year old. His first interaction within the Illawarra was to play a few games with Socceroo Adrian Alston in his first season with the University of Wollongong Soccer Club. The majority of Brendon Fotheringham’s career was spent at UOW SC and it is here where he tasted success in a grand final for the first time in 1989, one of UOW SC’s best periods as a club. From the mid 1990s onwards he then moved around to learn from different coaches at various clubs and during this period due to his vocation as a teacher he was heavily involved at the different levels of coaching within the Combined High School soccer community.I found Fotho to be a great interviewee as he was always willing to try different areas of the game and speak about them, such as refereeing in the past couple of seasons. The friendships developed in his career are many but one of the primary soccer relationships was with Ian Morris, which began when Fotho was his teacher in the late 1980s. Over the course of approximately 25 years these two have shared soccer experiences and it says a lot about both of them that their friendship still exists today. That is it for now, please enjoy this episode.Music by Luke Nolan
Welcome to episode 14 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. It is early on but the feedback and positivity around this project of mine gives me a warm buzz. Once again it may be boring for valued repeat listeners but I must and will thank everyone for the continued support. And a big shout out to the interviewees so far who have given up their time, memories, thoughts and places of residence to be interviewed. This episode’s interviewee was an out and out goalscorer, he knew where the back of the net was and hit it consistently. Winning the Illawarra Premier League first grade top goalscorer award three times shows where he sits amongst strikers in the region. But in this interview (online and offline) he was quick to state that his teammates were a big part of his success. Joe Coelho was open, engaging and honest about his career. It was a thoroughly enjoyable interview and Joe was fantastic to be around, especially his knowledge on the game. My thanks and respect go out to Joe for his time and allowing me into his home. Please enjoy the episode!Music by Luke Nolan
Welcome to episode 13 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. This episode’s interviewee had a great career in terms of his playing and committee involvement at Figtree Soccer Club. A Club where playing in September was the norm.As he stayed at Figtree his whole career (apart from a brief period in 1986) Ian Witheridge’s interview is unique as he describes his own career along with the journey of Figtree Soccer Club at the same time. Ian is a generous and humble man, who gave me so much information regarding his time at Figtree. He is a knowledgeable man in general and in the interviewing process it was apparent in his answers that he was a team and club person, something I admire. Again this interview is a brief but great account of Figtree Soccer Club (junior and senior clubs) in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, I thank Ian again publicly for his time and help. Enjoy.Music by Luke Nolan
Episode 11 is a cracker as I was privileged and honoured to speak with a pioneer/trail blazer for football in this country and our Illawarra region. The interviewee only had two years of junior soccer in the early 1970s when she was 10 and 11. After a few years off, due to girls not being allowed to play in their teenage years Julie Porter burst onto the Australian Women's soccer scene in the late 1970s firstly with the Bulli ThunderBirds. Her talent and work ethic took her into regional teams, state teams and the Australian Women's National team. She is a talented soccer player/coach but above this she has great respect of where she came from and who supported her throughout her magnificent career. Humble and articulate, Julie is a soccer person who deserves more recognition about her journey as do the rest of her peers from the late 1970s and 1980s. As these women gave so much to Australian Women's soccer in its infancy, which ultimately gave the sport great foundations in this country.I apologise if it times the interview sounds disjointed, this was solely my fault due to technical and research issues. Regardless Julie's journey shines through and was a great pleasure to record, please enjoy!Music by Luke Nolan
The interviewee in this episode came from working class coal mining stock in Scotland. With hard work and talent he made it to the top tier of Scottish football in the 1960s playing against the big two Celtic and Rangers.Hugh Tinney after 6 seasons with Partick Thistle was then transferred to Bury F.C. In the 7 seasons he was at Bury he captained the Club and represented his country. He then came out with his Family to Australia in the mid 1970s where he ended up playing/coaching soccer in the Illawarra for approximately a decade and created a new life here in the Illawarra.Hugh was a joy to interview and answered all questions asked. Hugh's passion for the game gave a lot to the Illawarra and he has definitely left a positive mark on our game.Music by Luke Nolan
The interviewee in this episode has spent over a quarter of a century coaching and teaching teams/people of varying ages and skill sets. A man with great perspective, intellect and a deep passion for the game John Frew's career is one I was proud to record. I texted one of his former players from The Wolves youth team of the mid 1980s and he said that John had an easy going nature which allowed for good relationships to be built and the bond within the team was strong. This testimonial 30 plus years later says a lot of John and the environment he created within the teams he coached. Please enjoy John's journey and thanks again for your support.Music by Luke Nolan
This episode’s interviewee is a great example of what makes soccer a beautiful sport in this country. A group of people in the Illawarra with proud Italian heritage get together to form their own Club in the 1960s. After playing in the amateur league and organised Illawarra leagues they then rise to the NSW State League in the 1980s, whereby in 1985 they were 2 points off gaining the opportunity of joining the National Soccer League. A monumental achievement in my mind and Frank Saladino was heavily amongst it with the Fairy Meadow United Club. Frank’s journey along with his Family, Committee and Community members gave the Illawarra an exciting Club to follow for a period of time and although not around today the Club is still remembered fondly by many in the Illawarra.Music by Luke Nolan
Today’s interviewee has had an extensive career which has traversed the Illawarra Leagues and NSW State Leagues. He has played for Clubs ranging from Fernhill (junior and senior clubs), Illawarra Junior representative teams, Fairy Meadow, Bellambi, Wollongong Macedonia, Unanderra, South Coast Croatia and Coniston. Add in the coaches he has played under and you can understand why Dean Gardiner’s episode will be one you will enjoy. A striker who worked hard at his game and learned a great deal about himself from the people around him, Dean’s interview was a pleasure to conduct and put together. Thanks again to Dean who has supported my social media pages from day one and has sent through a lot of material for other people to enjoy. A very generous guy.Music by Luke Nolan
In terms of this episode’s interviewee I am always surprised being a novice interviewer, by the way an interview unfolds. For this bloke I thought we would get an insight into English professional football, the NSL as a player and coach in the 1980s and the local Illawarra league as a player and coach. John Fleming brilliantly delivered on those points and added so much more, especially the theme of lifetime friendships (which does come through in the other episodes but is slightly more prominent here).I must admit that I did not talk about all of John’s soccer career in terms of playing and coaching and for that I apologise but I think the next 90 minutes is a good reflection on what he has achieved and given to the game in the Illawarra and England.Music by Luke Nolan
This interview with Alan was fascinating as his introduction to the game via his family instilled in him a passion for the game which has not left him. And when one of the family members is Uncle Barry Salisbury and you get taken onto the field as a team mascot in the 1963 NSW Federation grand final between South Coast United and APIA in front of 30K plus people it must create a memory so fantastic it beggars belief. This was one of many fascinating moments in Alan Mangles’ soccer life. I dearly hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed conversing with Alan. Thanks again to Alan and Sandra for the interview and thank you the listener for supporting my endeavour of exploring Illawarra’s football or soccer history.Music by Luke Nolan
After a chance conversation with a former Socceroo in 1964, Roy's involvement in the local game began. From this point Roy and Edith have contributed significantly to the local game, in particular their involvement with Bulli F.C.Music by Luke Nolan.
In this episode Dave details his soccer career as a ballboy, player, coach and parent. An enlightening discussion that covers many subjects including coaching his Daughter, Tarrawanna S.C., goalkeeping, girls soccer, womens soccer, Wollongong Wolves, Corrimal High, soccer mates and plenty more.Music by Luke Nolan.
