Two wins in 10 Premier League games, 15 points dropped from winning positions this season... Matt Davies-Adams, Liam Twomey and Luke Bosher are back to run the rule over the 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa. We begin with an epic Simon Johnson voice note live from Villa Park just moments after the final whistle - before taking a closer look at the ongoing goalkeeping conundrum, the dramatic drop-off of Cole Palmer's form and the growing sense of unease around this inexperienced squad. It means Tuesday night's visit of Southampton becomes even bigger, with defeat against the sorry Saints practically unthinkable. We discuss the wider state of the club with a pre-match protest planned before kick-off at Stamford Bridge, before focusing on what we want to see on the pitch from Enzo Maresca's side. We'll be back on Wednesday to look back on the visit of Southampton and surely (!?!) be reflecting on a much-needed and comfortable victory against the team rock bottom of the Premier League... Modern Day Goalkeepers - Lee Robinson shares his story from failure to future goalkeeping stars

Lee engages in a compelling conversation with former professional goalkeeper Lee Robinson, who has transitioned into a modern-day goalkeeping coach and entrepreneur. They discuss Robinson's journey from a challenging football career to his mission of transforming goalkeeping training through innovative methods and specialized gloves. The episode delves into the importance of character, work ethic, and decision-making in goalkeeping, contrasting traditional views that prioritise physical attributes like height. Robinson shares insights on how he aims to empower young goalkeepers by encouraging them to embrace mistakes in training to enhance their performance in games. This episode not only highlights the parallels between sports and business leadership but also emphasizes the significance of mentorship and personal growth in achieving success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Character Over Size: The importance of a goalkeeper's character and decision-making skills outweighs physical attributes like height. A smaller goalkeeper with a strong character can be more effective than a taller one lacking in these qualities. Learning from Mistakes: Making mistakes in training is essential for growth. The approach encourages goalkeepers to make errors during practice to avoid repeating them in games, fostering a mindset that values learning over perfection. Innovative Training Methods: The use of specialised training gloves that challenge goalkeepers to improve their catching skills and decision-making under pressure. This method aims to make training more realistic and beneficial for performance in actual games. Mental Health Awareness: Acknowledging the mental challenges faced by goalkeepers, including feelings of inadequacy and pressure. The discussion highlights the need for support and guidance to help young players navigate these challenges effectively. Changing Goalkeeping Norms: Advocating for a shift in how goalkeeping is perceived and trained, moving away from traditional methods that focus solely on physicality and technique. The goal is to inspire a new generation of goalkeepers who are confident, skilled, and capable of making smart decisions on the field. BEST MOMENTS  "I want to give the benefit of all my underachievements and failures and hard times and help these young goalkeepers not have to deal with what I had to go through."  "I think you should have to earn the right to call yourself a professional instead of just leaving school and a couple weeks later having a professional contract."  "The best goalkeepers aren't the best technically; they're the best decision makers under pressure." "What you did in those camps absolutely engages the heads of the goalkeepers, engages the hearts of them because they love it, and fundamentally engages the hands and the footwork."  "You have to make more mistakes in training to make less in a game." On one hand they giveth... Goalkeeping punditry cranked up a notch at the weekend with Danny Murphy taking centre stage on MOTD. In showcasing Ederson's distribution in Man City's win over Brentford, he not only did so with understanding and well-reasoned analysis, but unknowingly carved a hole for the universe to strike a balance elsewhere. For over on Sky Sports, messrs Neville and Carragher continued their goalkeeping guffery with criticism of Guglielmo Vicario, Emi Martinez and Sam Johnstone - Neville at one point bizarrely stating Tottenham's Italian stopper had "frogs in his pants". In the Championship, James Trafford helped Burnley to a big win at Leeds, Jacob Zetterstrom bagged another clean sheet in a strong start to life at Derby and Anthony Patterson very nearly made a Save of the Season in Sunderland's loss at Plymouth. Tommy Simkin of Walsall takes Celebration of the Weekend and a shout out to Kasper Schmeichel for not conceding in his opening five league games for Celtic - the first time since 1906 any goalkeeper in Scotland has achieved such a feat.

A little late this week. That can be blamed on both the transfer window and sleepless flights, which might just give you an insight into what this week's Voice of Goalkeeping will be. Silliness aside, Joe Hart is now a bonafide member of the Match of the Day setup - and if the Premier League's opening weekend show is anything to go by, we could be in for a wealth of high-profile goalkeeping punditry this season. That, alongside Christian Walton's first-ever top-flight start at Ipswich and Robert Sanchez currently being one of six at Chelsea, is covered with all the best bits from the EFL. Special mention to Corey Addai for sounding the first Goalkeeper Assist Klaxon of the campaign.

Has Novak Micovic become a distraction? The LA Galaxy's 3-1 loss to the Seattle Sounders brought back some of the club's biggest fears. Is there still a set-piece problem when it comes to defense? Can the Galaxy win the big games, match intensity with the best teams, and figure out how to gel as a team before the playoffs start? On today's show, host Josh Guesman breaks down the loss to Seattle in the simplest terms. Were the Galaxy distracted by the Novak Micovic transfer request, and can they regroup with just eight games left in the season? Plus, why does the Julian Araujo transfer from Barcelona to Bournemouth net the Galaxy more money, and why might a defensive rumor not be totally out of left field? Der Talk #70 Uwe Kamps - Head of Goalkeeping

FohlenPodcast

Following his retirement from professional football in 2018, Adam Bartlett's ascent in the world of goalkeeper coaching has been rather rapid. Since officially taking the reins as Head of Goalkeeping at Newcastle United at the beginning of the 2022-23 season, he's overseen the arrival of Nick Pope, managed an unexpected scenario of having to play No3 Loris Karius - a man who hadn't started a competitive fixture for 20 months - in the EFL Cup Final with Manchester United, and contributed to his hometown club returning to the Champions League. Over a spot of premium grub at Darsley Park, he talks us through how he grasped an opportunity and continued to evolve a department he hopes will soon be close to unrivalled in the Premier League.

What is the most mentally challenging position on the football or soccer pitch?  Many people would argue it's the goalkeeper.  Common psychological challenges goalkeepers face include; coping with mistakes and bouncing back strongly, dealing with tough and physical opponents, playing the ball out from the back with their feet in uncomfortable situations, communicating effectively with team-mates, selection issues and dealing with time on the bench. Today, Andy Elleray, an author and goalkeeping coach, who has worked for clubs such as Chelsea and Bristol Rovers tells me about mental toughness and how it applies to goalkeeping sharing some advice, I also provide a suggestion on how goalkeepers can help themselves remain calm and composed when faced with difficulties on the pitch. Key Learnings All goalkeepers make mistakes. Being able to accepts making mistakes and move on is a skill that goalkeepers can develop. Helping goalkeepers master the controllables is essential. Trigger words or physical triggers (using sweat bands or super-hero bands) can help goalkeepers move on more quickly from mistakes. Try the calm and composed face exercise to help you.
