Richard Bowker is in conversation with his father Roger Bowker, a legendary transport industry professional who spent 62 years in the bus industry working for Eastern National, Oldham Corporation, SELNEC, Greater Manchester Transport, Rossendale Transport, Eastbourne Buses, London Transport and Stagecoach Group. A pioneer with the industry, Roger Bowker's passion for excellence in service whilst at the same time delivering a profitable business means he is highly respected amongst his peers. His passion for transport began with railways though and in this video, he discusses the influence that his father (who also worked on the railways during the Second World War) had on him. We hear about 10000 and 10001, the Coronation Scot, Clan class locos on the West Coast Main Line, rides on the Keswick line as well as the Coniston and Lake Side branches. We also hear about tram and trolleybuses. Everything is covered! ...in which we take an autumn stroll into Grizedale Forest with local-born author Rebecca Smith to explore the hidden history of working class people in the countryside. Exploring the expansive pine plantations north of Satterthwaite, we learn about Rebecca's idyllic childhood roaming the Graythwaite Estate, where her father was head forester. Seeking out elusive Bogle Crag, we consider the class ambiguity of living in the shadow of 'the big house', and the mixed blessings of tied housing for foresters and farmers. Taking a long view of the rural working class, Rebecca talks about her grandfather and great-grandfather, and the reality of navvy lives – including at Thirlmere – that were tough, transient and are largely forgotten today. On a mission to find 'Black Apple Tree', we reflect on the social impacts of mass tourism and the risk of dysfunction in rural economies that lose the workers they rely upon. Finally, we ask: why have the Coniston raves been airbrushed from history? Rebecca's book, Rural: The Lives of the Working Class Countryside, is available at all good bookshops (we recommend local!).

We said we'd be back to unpack our Lakeland 100 weekender, let's go! Dusting ourselves off after another everlasting weekend in the Lake District John, Stevie Boy and Mel Sykes sit down for the big debrief! We've plenty to cover. It proved to be a tough race for both John and Mel as the course threw all it had at them. Their outcomes differed with John battling injury and Mel battling the downright rude terrain. We get tore into in typical warts n all fashion.  Kicking off with pre-race vibes, meeting pals old and new, and start line feels. Who forgot what? Did John leave his world-famous undercarriage obliterators at home?!? Then we're onto the main event, 105 miles of Lake District paths awaited. How did it pan out for our intrepid duo? What weather curveballs got chucked their way? How did they cope with the arduous terrain? Did they come a cropper and end up on the DNF bus back to basecamp? There's hunners of tails from the trails to cover before we reach what is a best-in-class finish line back in Coniston. The fun doesn't stop at the finish line though, no no no, this last weekend in July has turned into quite the spectacular for us so we can't not make time to have a good old blether about some memorable post-race celebrations. Whether you've ran, plan to run or even if we've even peeked your interest in either the Lakeland 50 or Lakeland 100 our chat will have you laughing and a bit greety all at the same time. These are the halcyon days we'll look back on, now mon in and let us share our weekend adventuring with you!

He lives in a coastal town in Goa on the shore of the Arabian Sea but often ventures into the mountains on foot and on his bike. He reflects upon his current experiences in India as well as past experiences cycling through Europe, especially Albania. We stay in Albania for an extract from Along The Med on a Bike Called Reggie, Andrew P. Sykes' travelogue about cycling the EuroVelo 8 from Greece to Portugal in 2013. To explain if things have changed in the past decade, the podcast speaks to Dritan Kolgjini, a tour guide for Explore Travel's Albanian cycling trips. Well hello again, we've had a busy week since we last spoke. We're here to recap it all PLUS welcome to the show a most excellent guest. Come on in, the kettle's just off the boil. We spend the majority of this week's intro blethering about the epic Auchterarder Running Festival, a warm weekend of racing and achievement in glorious Perthshire. We do have a quick nip over to the Aosta Valley to see how a few pals of the show got on in the gruelling Tor Des Géants. Neil MacNicol then joins the fray, a familiar face on the Scottish Ultra Running circuit, himself a superb athlete as well as being pivotal to many others in his role as run coach. First up we find out all about Neil's running back story and his entrepreneurial motivation to set up his successful run coaching business RunRecover (see link below). It's Neil's personal successes and approach though that we home in on, after breaking into ultra running races back in 2011 it's fair to say he's achieved great heights. A methodical approach, a discipline and a love for stats and data emerge as we get under the lid of what drives Neil on and gives him his competitive edge. From early impressive forays into the marathon distance Neil recaps finding his strengths in longer distances, the appeal of the hills and trails winning over the tarmac and towpaths he'd started off with. A love affair with the Lake District is apparent and his regular return ticket to Coniston to take part in the Lakeland 100 each year dominates our chat. A first go at the Lakeland 50 in 2023 allowed for Neil to race hard, it was one he was up for ending in a superb victory. With a glimpse forward to an up n coming Bob Graham Round attempt thrown in along with all your YHRF favourites (fav kit, fav scran etc etc) this episode covers all the bases. Picking through the abandoned remains of old working floors and tips, we learn about the long history of slate quarrying in the Lake District – an industry spread over 200 sites that yielded a range of highly-prized stone. Discussing how slate is formed, we make our way to the powerhouse, smithy and working floor of the Old Man workings, where millions of tonnes of stone were shaped into prized roofing slate by generations of miners. As we wander, we hear about the likely Norman origins of the industry; the revolution wrought by compressed air; the perils of journeying home in the snow; and the Sunday-morning miracles that collapsed caverns – and saved lives.   *** It would be remiss not to note that we recorded underground in the company of an experienced guide, and kitted with helmets and torches. Exploring these workings is immensely enjoyable - in the right company and with the right kit. In all cases, leave the workings as you found them. ***

...in which we journey into the mining past of iconic Coppermines Valley above Coniston with industrial historian Mark Hatton. Rewinding time to the 16th century, we seek out the earliest signs of copper extraction on the lonely slopes below Hole Rake, before climbing to the wheelpits and addits of The Company of Mines Royal - monuments to the German miners who abandoned Keswick when their Newlands seams were exhausted. As we climb ever-higher into Red Dell, we learn about the audacious scale of 18th century infrastructure - the breathtaking leats, the mighty waterwheels and the miles of tunnels; we consider the dangers of the shaft-potted landscape and its unforgiving technology; we picture the hard lives of the men, women and children who once worked these remarkable slopes... and we ask, 'Did the IRA really try to assassinate John Major using a bomb below Levers Water?".

Next weekend, the 9th and 10th of July, is the IARU HF Championship. It runs for 24 hours from 1200UTC on the 9th and uses the 1.8 to 28MHz bands where contests are permitted. The exchange is signal report and your ITU Zone. For the UK this is 27. Next Sunday, the 10th of July, the UK Microwave Group 24, 47 and 76GHz contest takes place between 0900 and 1700. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. The UK Six Metre Group's Summer Marathon is still taking place, ending on the 2nd of August. Using all modes, stations exchange their 4-character locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Friday the 1st of July 2022. Last week was not a good one for HF propagation in general. There were many complaints from amateurs about poor conditions that can be explained by a combination of low solar flux levels and unsettled geomagnetic conditions. The SFI started the week last Sunday at 102 but then dropped to 98 the following day. It subsequently continued to drop, reaching 92 by Thursday. At the same time, the Kp index reached five and it continued to be unsettled into Monday. The effects on the ionosphere were not good, with maximum usable frequencies over a 3,000km path struggling to reach 18MHz. Conditions improved as the week went on with F2-layer MUFs back into the 21MHz region by Thursday. This is fairly typical of Summer ionospheric conditions, leaving Sporadic-E as the likely main propagation mode on 10 metres until the Autumn. Next week NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will start to climb again, perhaps peaking at 140 by the 11th of July. Geomagnetic conditions are predicted to be stable with an average Kp index of two, until the 10th when it could reach four. As long as we don't have any coronal mass ejections during this time this could mean slightly better F2-layer conditions next week. As always, Sporadic-E may provide loud short-skip signals on the upper bands. Watch out for multi-hop Es paths which are harder to predict. And now the VHF and up propagation news. With VHF National Field Day, this weekend we would all like conditions at their best, and with the Sporadic-E season still in full swing, that's a possibility. The position of the jet stream is often instrumental in defining the directions that perform for Es and this weekend it looks to be a close-by jet stream over the near continent. This means paths towards central and southeast Europe plus the Baltic and Scandinavia. You might be able to get some notion of how it's developing by Googling and looking at the ionosonde from Dourbes in Belgium for spikes in the foEs trace. With low pressure close to Scotland over the weekend, it's only southern UK under a weak ridge that will see any Tropo. This will typically be better overnight and around the coasts for paths into the continent across the North Sea or the English Channel. So unless you are on the coast, your tropo options will diminish early this Sunday morning once the solar heating starts to break down the overnight temperature inversion. The UKAC 144MHz contest on Tuesday evening looks a better prospect with high pressure nudging towards western Britain and a chance that conditions may be slightly up, even for more northern stations. With some showery episodes likely, rain scatter is always a possibility, but decaying as the high moves in later. The clusters should tell you if aurora or random meteor scatter are viable options. Just one meteor shower this week, the July Pegasids active from the 4th of July to the 14th, but its Zenithal Hourly Rate is low at around five. Meteor showers in July are at their best around the end of the month, particularly the Southern delta-Aquariids, peaking on the 30th of July. The maximum ZHR of this shower is around 25 over two days. The radiant of this shower is above the horizon in the UK during the night and early morning. Moon declination goes negative this coming Wednesday so expect lower peak elevation and shortening Moon visibility windows for EME. Path losses are dropping as we head towards perigee a week on Wednesday. 144MHz sky noise is low all week. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Coniston farmer Maria Benjamin hopes to change that, for some farmers at least, with Lake District Tweed – Sustainably Hefted Cloth, a new initiative that connects the history and culture of wool production in the Lake District with contemporary Lakeland farming. Wool from farmers in 13 different Lakeland valleys is being used to weave individual valley tweeds with designs inspired by the unique characteristics of each valley, the lakes, the landscape, the geology and the former industry. The material will be sold as throws and by the metre representing valleys including Ennerdale, Windermere and Ullswater. The project is supported by a grant from the Lake District National Park's Farming in Protected Landscapes Fund and an already oversubscribed Kickstarter fund. Caz Graham travels to Coniston Water to meet Maria and her flock of Castlemilk Moorit sheep, farmer and knitter Sadie Edmondson, weaver Sheila Phillips and textile designer Louise Dixon.

Welcome to Swimrun 101: The Tether! But First…Training UpdateWe had a good Casco Bay race simulation practice over the weekend and we're definitely starting to feel the itch to race in a few weeks. You're awesome Hugh!Feats of EnduranceIt was really tough to pick a winner this week but we had to give the award to Tom Avontour from The Netherlands. Tom raced the Trail des 6 cols 45k race in France over the weekend and given that he lives in a practically pancake flat country, a race that had over 11,000ft of climbing is no easy feat. Major kudos Tom!Make sure to check out our Strava Club and follow fellow Swimrunners from around the world as they train for races and life. This Week In Swimrun (Powered by Raceid.com)It's been a good week for Swimrun news!ÖTILLÖ Engadin took place over the weekend and it looked as epic as ever. Why? And How? of the Swimrun Tether and make our case as to why you should be going to your local paracord/shock cord and carabiner supplier and DIY'ing one of these for your next Swimrun. You can also check out our article in Triathlete Magazine about the tether and our video on Youtube. What is it?The tether, or tow line, is essentially a 3m (or roughly 10ft) cord that Swimrun teams use to stay in contact with each other in the water and on land during a Swimrun. Swimrun event rules typically state that teams must stay within 10 ft of each other at all times for safety. The genesis for the tether, according to previous guest of the show and legendary swimrunner Jonas Colting, was to keep teams safe and in contact during the original ÖTILLÖ race, which in the early years took teams 18+ hours to finish. While they aren't mandatory at every race, as you will hear later, it's a definite advantage to use one.Why is it a thing? There are some tactical advantages for using a tether. Mainly, it allows teams to stay in contact during swim legs and stay in each other's draft. The advantages of drafting in the water are pretty well understood. In longer swimrun events, recovering behind the lead swimmer can keep everyone fresh, which can pay off later in the race. Teams can draft with different strategies. Teams will typically stay tethered during run legs and we would definitely recommend this. The tether provides real-time haptic feedback that lets you know exactly how your partner is doing pace-wise. If a team member is not having a good day, it's not uncommon for a runner to tow their partner up a steep climb. The tether can keep a team moving forward until they recover or hit the next aid station. Rather than thinking of it as your teammate giving you a push of motivation, they are actually giving you a pull of motivation.  When you are using a tether, we would also recommend keeping it on all the time unless the terrain makes that dangerous (cliff jumps) or annoying (lots of shrubbery for it to get caught on.) Clipping, unclipping, wrapping the cord up after a 200m swim, pulling it out and trying to rehook it to your partner will eat up a lot of time. This all comes down to practice and developing the technique to wield the tether effectively. How to build a tether and how to use it?The majority of teams DIY their tethers and we recommend using quick release carabiners to attach at both ends for um...quick release. (You can buy them pre-made but they are usually way overpriced and, more importantly, where's the fun in that?!) The length can vary depending on comfort level, but typically you want it just long enough so that you stay on your partner's feet in the water. (PRO TIP: if the tether is too long during a race, make a knot on the line during the next run leg.) Teams then attach each end to their wetsuit (some suits have integrated loops for attaching one), to the cord of your pull buoy waist loop (if you're using that type of pull buoy mount), or to a waist utility belt a la Batman. Chris uses a “tactical military grade” nylon belt that has a loop built into the belt that sells for around $13.00 on Amazon. Companies like Orca and ARK Sports also make these belts. To make your tether, we recommend using either a thick, bright-colored 1/4” paracord/shockcord or ½-¾” nylon webbing material and attach carabiners on either side. We recommend a highly visible color that can be easily seen in murky lakes and crystal clear ocean waters. You don't need anything special in terms of carabiners, something that's light and basic (but not easily snapped) will do the trick. As with anything Swimrun, you should experiment in training to see what works best for you. It definitely takes some getting used to swim and run with a tether...and dinner plate-sized hand paddles...and a giant pull buoy. Basically though, the partner being towed wants to keep the tether in their midline so that they can swim freely without getting all caught up in the tether. In summary, we really can't recommend the tether enough! It was a game changer for us when we finally stopped taking the tether off during runs and think that it will be the same for other teams as well. That's it for this week's show. Welcome to episode seventy-nine of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! This week's show is all about swimming. We were super lucky to be able to chat with Gemma Hollis of PushGlideKick. She's a swim stroke and mechanics expert and we pick her brain on all things swimming for Swimrun. Get your notepads out for this one.More on this interview later in the show.Training UpdateWe're stuffing as much hay into the barn as we can the next few weeks during our last training block for Casco Bay. (Friendly reminder: use the code LOWTIDE15 to save 15% on your registration to any Ödyssey Swimrun 2021 event.) Long Swimruns, long pool sets, and long-ish runs are all on deck the next few weeks so that should be fun.  #LFGShoutoutsThis week we're shouting out the Country of Switzerland. In the last few weeks, they have cracked the top ten (in terms of show downloads by country) and we're super stoked on that. It's also fitting since ÖTILLÖ Engadin is happening this weekend and it's a race that is 100% on our bucket list.Feats of EnduranceThis week's winner is Oskar Boberg who participated in the Slottsrundan Swimrun and raced the 29k long course over the weekend. We looked up that race after seeing his post on Strava and it didn't look easy! Strong work Oskar!Need some inspiration in your training life? Then join the LTBz Strava Club and connect with fellow Swimrunners as they train and race all over the world. This Week in Swimrun (Powered by Raceid.com)Here's all the Swimrun news that's either fit to print or that we were able to glean from Instagram. As we mentioned above, the Slottsrundan Swimrun took place over the weekend and it looked like a dope event. The event takes place on the coast of Lake Mälaren and the course stretches along Rosersbergs, Steninge Castle, and Sigtuna. Fun factoid: Lake Mälaren has 594 reviews on Google with an average rating of 4.5 stars. Who knew that you could review a lake? It's race week for Breca Swimrun's Coniston event. This will be their first race in the UK in 20 months and we're stoked for them to be back hosting events! Check out their hype video on Youtube to see why this race looks amazing! In ÖTILLÖ world, all eyes are on Switzerland this week with Engadin taking place this weekend. This was the first ÖTILLÖ race outside of Sweden and helped launch the international Swimrun movement. Want to know more about this event? Check out our Engadin Course Preview episode and learn why we are already trying to convince our wives that we need to go to Switzerland. In the bummer portion of the news, ÖTILLÖ 1000 Lakes has been cancelled for 2021. Registered participants should be getting info from ÖTILLÖ regarding their options. Germany has general elections on that weekend and the City of Rheinsberg informed ÖTILLÖ that they were unable to get enough volunteers to support the races. Registered participants will either receive a refund of 95% of the entry fee or they can move their registration to another ÖTILLÖ event. In other news, We Swimrun has a couple of events on deck that look pretty cool. First, on September 18 they are hosting the Tal Y Llyn Swimrun in Snowdonia National Park in Wales. This race has a cool format where Swimrunners will run on a loop course consisting of two swims and two runs and they have 6 hours to see how many laps they can complete. Less than a month later, We Swimrun is hosting the Dyfi Swimrun (pronounced Dovey) on October 2. Registration for both events is open now so if you're in Wales or want to go to Wales, check these events out! That's it for this week. Feel free to email us to tip us off to any events or Swimrun news that you'd like for us to share on the show.UpdatesIf you're looking to show your Low Tide pride, head over to our website to get yourself some LTBz apparel and other stuff. We've also got something totally new in the store that we recently soft launched that we're super stoked on but we'll just leave it at that. Are you racing Casco Bay in August? If so, come join us at our inaugural LTBz post-race after party, co-hosted by Ödyssey Swimrun at Lone Pine Brewery. We'll be there from 5:30ish until they close at 8pm. We'll be sharing more details about that as we get closer to the race but mark it on your calendars! Our Conversation with Gemma HollisWe first heard about Gemma from Lars at Ödyssey Swimrun and figured since he went to her for swim analysis then we should definitely be chatting with her. She was great to chat with and her passion for swimming was definitely on display. We spoke with her about her journey to becoming a swim coach, her thoughts on teaching swimming to adults, her opinions on optimal stroke rates and form for swimming for Swimrun, and finally, the amazing pool in her backyard. As we wander, with Rusland Horizons’ Marion Brown, we learn about the industrial heritage of bobbin mills, charcoal pits and tanneries, and the extraordinary rarity of Cumbria’s Atlantic woodlands - Britain’s temperature rainforests - before being joined by Jo Clayton and Darryl Kelbrick, who abandoned the nine-to-five to buy, live in and work their own 33-acre wood. In the sheltered porch of their off-grid home on the hill, we talk about the highs and lows of a simpler way of life; we hear why trees don’t just need planting - they need long-term care; we discuss the couples’ sustainable lifestyle making charcoal products and traditional woodland crafts; we witness the devestation inflicted by out-of-kilter deer populations; and we abandon decimalisation in favour of the Cumbrian pimp. I spoke to my friend Alexander who is based in New South Wales about his journey as piano player and crooning singer.  With his old-school sound and dapper demeanor, you would never guess that “piano man” Alexander is only 21 years old. Citing Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole as his influences, Alex uses his strong, smooth tone and old-school character to stand out among up-and-coming singers his age. Like all notorious lounge singers, Alex isn’t simply a talented vocalist but also aims to keep his audience entertained. Over a decade of performing has allowed him to develop this skill and charm his audience every time he steps on stage. Alexander found his love of music at his family home in Coniston, New South Wales when his mother bought him an old ragtime piano. From the moment he sat down in front of the keys, he knew that he was destined to perform. Once he reached high school, he started studying music and added singing to his repertoire. In 2013, Alex had his biggest performance yet, singing “Candle in the Wind” by Elton John to a crowd of 20,000 over 4 nights. At 16, Alexander organized Christmas Carols in Wollongong, a nearby city, to raise money for the “Disability Trust” and within the first two years had raised thousands for the organization with numerous in attendance. Five years of performing these carols helped develop Alex’s character and build his confidence on stage, turning him into the performer he is today.  Learn more on Dreams Not Memes  FB: https://www.facebook.com/AlexanderPerforms Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alexanderperforms/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dreamsnotmemes/support

Football United vs Soccer City

Welcome everybody to episode 44 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. I would like to sincerely thank all the interviewees, listeners and the soccer public of the Illawarra, Australia and the World who download this podcast. Additionally I would like to say thank you to the people who contribute, comment and reminisce on the social media pages. Please note if you have a person you think I should interview please message me directly on Facebook or Instagram or Twitter.Paul Giraldi started playing junior soccer in 1969 as a left full-back with Woonona Junior Soccer Club down at Ocean Park. Although humble about his own abilities, Paul was proficient enough to play representative junior soccer for a couple of years along with his club soccer with Woonona (and school soccer with Woonona High School). His senior career started with Fairy Meadow under 18s in the Illawarra Premier League in 1977 while he was still dual registered with his junior club Woonona. The first couple of years at Fairy Meadow allowed him to play with his brother and good friend Dean Gardiner. Added to this his U18 team had success winning the Kass Cup a couple of times.Paul was approximately 16 and a half years old when he joined the Bellambi Rosellas after being asked to come across by his former high school teacher John Frew. Here he played first grade under John Frew and other experienced senior players such as Rob Banks, Tony Gill and Geoff Farrar. He learnt a lot at Bellambi and after this he joined Wollongong United with his brother, Dean and the Sattin brothers in 1981.Here in State League 2nd division he was coached by Mike Johnson, a coach that had an enormous influence on his football career as well as his life. Mike was an intense man and it was fascinating to hear Paul discuss his time with Mike. For several years he played with Wollongong United/Wollongong Macedonia along with many team mates. His time at this club was highlighted by the state league derbies between Fairy Meadow, another intense coach in John Bingham and Paul’s ability to play alongside very good friends. In 1989 Paul went across to Fairy Meadow Italia under Glenn Fontana in the state league for a year. Unfortunately Fairy Meadow folded at the end of that year and this was a sad event for Paul and the Illawarra. Next he went to Bellambi Rosellas for a second stint as a player under Steve Quirk. After a couple of seasons he then moved on to Coniston Makedonija with former team mate, friend and now coach Harry Sattin in 1992. They had a successful year as Coniston won the league championship and were grand finalists. In 1993 he joined Fernhill SC as their coach Larry Gaffney rang him and at the time it suited Paul’s personal life. Paul played at Fernhill for a few seasons and amongst playing with a great club, he discusses former team mate Scott Chipperfield and very good friend and team mate Claudio Cellini. It was very insightful to hear Paul’s thoughts on both men who have contributed a lot for our game in the Illawarra.Paul thought he had retired from first grade football in 1998 after finishing with Fernhill and he started to play with an amateur team. But he was mistaken as Woonona Sharks coach Ian Cirson saw him play for the amateur team in the pre-season Corrimal Leagues Knock out in 1999. Ian liked what he saw and called Paul up and at the age of 37 Paul played 1 year in premier league at the club where he started his football career thirty years prior. For me the interview with Paul was fantastic as I learnt a lot about him, especially the Macedonia days where he played at a high level with his brother and 5 to 6 very good friends. Paul has longevity and a passion for the game in the Illawarra. He played at a high level across two decades, with strong and successful teams (and coaches). Publicly I would like to pay my respects to him as he allowed me the time to speak with him for over two hours. I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed recording it.

Football United vs Soccer City

Welcome everybody to episode 41 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. As always I would like to sincerely thank all the interviewees, listeners and the soccer public of the Illawarra/Australia who download this podcast. Additionally I would like to say thank you to the people who contribute, comment and reminisce on the social media pages. This episode’s interviewee started playing with Figtree Junior Soccer Club in 1990 when she was 10 years old. After three years of junior soccer Cath Lear had to stop playing due to girls not being allowed to play the sport past the age of 12.Prior to talking to Cath about her move into senior soccer we talked about Cath’s other involvement in our sport with her Grandfather Peter Bannister. “Banno” as he was known, is a legend in Illawarra Soccer with Coniston as a player and for his lengthy time at University of Wollongong SC (where he wore many hats). In her teenage years Cath had a lot of involvement with her Grandfather helping him out at the University of Wollongong SC.In the mid 1990s Cath joined the senior ranks when she signed with South Coast United where she developed her football, friendships and a rivalry with Oak Flats. After 4 seasons with South Coast United Cath moved to the Wollongong Wolves in 1999 to play state league football and challenge herself as a footballer.Concurrently around this time Cath was at the University of Wollongong where she was studying for a teaching degree. Cath successfully represented the UOW at the University games playing football. During her time at UOW she represented the Eastern University Games team which toured New Zealand and she made a “Green and Gold” select team which toured China. In 2003 she joined Woonona SC and played eight successful seasons. After her eight seasons at Woonona Cath then spent a few seasons at Balgownie Rangers FC where she played and in addition to this went into the player-coach ranks. The Coniston Massacre is the name given to the officially-sanctioned murder of hundreds of Indigenous people of the Warlpiri, Anmatyerre, and Kaytetye tribes, committed by Northern Territory police and landowners in 1928.The massacre was motivated, ostensibly, by the murder of Fred Brooks, a white station hand who worked at Coniston Station. In retaliation, William George Murray led a series of expeditions in search of Brooks’ murderers. Murray and his party indiscriminately murdered almost every Indigenous man, woman and child they came across. The number of murders in the official record is 31, but the true number of Indigenous people killed in this series of attacks is believed to be around 200.EPISODE NOTES:The Coniston Massacre is one of many atrocities committed against Indigenous peoples by white settlers – atrocities that began on January 26, 1776, and continue in various forms to the present day.Whatever your feelings about Australia Day, it cannot be denied that Australia has a continuing history of violence towards the Indigenous people of Australia. Indigenous people have lived on this land for over 100,000 years, and in the less than 300 years of white settlement, we have destroyed the land, marginalized its first peoples, and placed hundreds of refugees in offshore detention centres. We need to fix these systemic issues, and find a day when all people can celebrate all of the many incredible things that this great Southern land has to offer. To watch the Coniston Film, go here https://rebelfilms.com.au/films/coniston/To read more about the massacre from the Central Land Council, go here https://www.clc.org.au/files/pdf/Making_Peace_with_the_Past.pdfTo read about the Northern Territory police apology for the massacre, go here https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-08-24/nt-police-apologise-for-state-sanctioned-coniston-massacre/10162850If you like what we do please consider supporting us on PATREONSubscribe to the podcast on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM or EMAIL us on murderinthelandofoz@gmail.comwww.thatsnotcanonproductions.com

In 1928, a massacre of Indigenous Australians occurred in Central Australia and the Board of Inquiry that was appointed to investigate the case exonerated the three police officers responsible for the killings. Managing partner at Marque Lawyers, Michael Bradley, was shocked to discover this underreported miscarriage of justice, penning the story of this mass-killing in his new book, Coniston. Michael talks with host Jerome Doraisamy on this episode of The Lawyers Weekly Show about the legal history of this particular case, why it's imperative for legal professionals to examine such incidents of discriminatory practice, and how delving into this topic has impacted his work professionally. WHEN you have a dream stuck in your head, you'll sacrifice whatever it takes to achieve it. This is non more applicable than to Callala product Blake Horton, who has just returned to the Shoalhaven following four years of playing football professionally in Europe. After starting to play at the age of just four, because he wanted to emulate his older brother, Horton quickly fell in love with the game and developed a natural talent as a goalkeeper. Since then, after stops at Culburra, Bomaderry, Southern Branch, Port Kembla and Rockdale City, the former Nowra Christian School student chased his football dream overseas - which led to him playing at FC Chabab in the Hoofdklasse, SC Telstar in the Jupiler League and finally OFC Oostzaan in East Amsterdam Derde Divisie. While abroad, largely based in the Netherlands, Horton would travel five hours a day just to train, in a country where English wasn't the first language. But despite all this, as well as numerous injury concerns, Horton wouldn't have changed his experience overseas at all - which has led to him now playing for Coniston in the Illawarra. Hear all about his amazing journey below, in his in-depth chat with Courtney Ward.

His journey is not just about the players he played with and against but as he described it in the interview it was about the camaraderie amongst the people he met and played with at Wollongong United, Aris, Portside and Coniston.A delight to interview as he held nothing back and was open in terms of his experiences but additionally letting me interview him at his cafe. This week’s guest said so many things that either resonated with me or surprised me I don’t know where to begin. The one that grabbed the podcast episode title, was when Suzanna realised she “could get the top of the mountain feeling in the middle of a lake”. I’ve been at the top of mountains, Kilimanjaro being the highest, and I knew exactly what she meant. For me it is a mix of achievement, peace, isolation, daring, adventure, (often) cold, challenge, environment and conditions which create that feeling. She talked about what can happen when plans change. Suzanna Swims appears to have risen like a phoenix out of not completing her Mountain Leader qualification, losing her dad, and to an extent her identity. What was a devastating and life changing period became the foundation for a job and way of life that now brings her joy. She mentions a friend called Jude, who provided a bridge into wild swimming - something she says she needed in her life but never realised it, until she was regularly leaving the house before 6am to swim in the lakes. How many of us have a Jude in our wild swimming story? Someone who helped us to get in, to move on and to grow? She also talks about the water in the different lakes in Cumbria feeling different on the skin. I’ve never even thought of this before, but will certainly be even more mindful the next time I get the opportunity to compare. And finally, while I will persist in my efforts to learn front crawl, Suzanna validated breaststroke as a credible stroke for long distance open water swimming in skins and made me question my own strategies for going faster and further. It was an absolute gift being able to interview her. And because of her I’m signing up for the Winter Swimming World Championships at Lake Bled, Slovenia next year! Go me. Things we talked about Crummock Water, Coniston, Jelly Babies, Suzanna Swims, Walking Women, Buttermere, Windermere, Bassenthwaite, Poland, Borrowdale, Barefoot shoes, Derwentwater, Wastwater, Scottish Winter Swimming Championships, Estonia Look closely and you'll see the island we swam to.

Welcome to episode 2 of the Swim Wild podcast. This week I’m talking to Sarah, a very lovely, funny woman who very generously shares her time and experiences with me. Our conversation about wild swimming goes into many different subjects. But the thing that I come away thinking about, is how similar we are when we sign up to do an event. By the time this podcast goes live, she will have done the 10km Bwrlwm Bermo - Barmouth Hurly Burly, and I’ll have completed the 1.5km Aberdovey Swim. We met the weekend before, both contemplating having a week to go before our big event of the year. For Sarah, the 10km challenge will be the farthest she has ever swum – by a considerable distance. I’m utterly in awe at the thought of completing such a distance. For me, more comfortable swimming in lakes, the Aberdovey swim will pose new and unknown challenges – not in terms of distance, as I’ll comfortably swim a mile each week in the local lake, but through the unpredictability of the weather and the effect of the tide. I don’t do a lot of sea swimming, I understand the water less, feel more nervous about its power and overall less in control. When we talked about our respective events, neither of us knew the detail. We had the big picture – date, place, time. But neither of us had studied the details. For me, it’s the detail that can psyche me out. If I’d read too much about what the weather had been like on the same weekend in previous years, or how strong the currents and tides were, I wouldn’t have felt more prepared, I’d have felt more scared. Sarah seemed to have the same psychology. Her approach was, “I’ve been working on the distance. On the day I’ll just turn up and do it.” She wasn’t even sure which way up the estuary she would be swimming. I admire this brave and crazy approach. I equally admire people who study the detail and use that to give them confidence. I’ve done quite a few events this year, and am starting to think I’ll do less next year. Not less swimming. Never less swimming. But less events. Less mass starts. Less event swimming hats. Less medals. Some events have pushed me to swim in places I might not venture into. Others take me to places that may otherwise lay undiscovered – it’s Killary Fjord next week! Others test your stamina due to the distance or temperature, or presence of jellyfish. But next year, I’m wondering if I can summon up these tests into a calendar of events that only involve myself and a couple of friends. We could design our own t-shirt and hat and medal and tick them off as we go – finding the things that will push each of us to discover new places, experience more joy and face personal demons. That’s what I’ll mainly be Googling this week! Places we mention Capernwray diving centre, Burgh Island, Salcombe, The Pilchard Inn, USwim Boundary Park, Holmes Chapel, Great North Swim, Windermere, Hatchmere, Bala – Llyn Tegid, The Quarry near Delamere, Coniston, Cumbria, Alderford lake, Pickmere Events we mention Epic events, Bwrlwm Bermo - Barmouth Hurly Burly, Salford Quays polar swim, Aberdovey Swim, Big Welsh Swim, Great North Swim, Windermere Groups we mention #ChesterFrosties, Outdoor Swimming Society Other stuff Robson Green wild swimming adventure, Swim Trek, Brownlee Brothers, Raynaud’s, OW swim coaching qualification

Bellambi held Coniston to nil in the first half before Franc Piero put the title hopefuls in front in the 54th minute. The home side was not able to muster a goal with the score finishing 1-0. Northern landscapes take centre stage in Episode Five as Melvyn Bragg celebrates the fells, lakes and moors that he loves. He meets mountaineer Chris Bonington in North Cumbria and goes on to see how, over the last 200 years the North has provided inspiration for great writers, some of the greatest in the language - Wordsworth, Coleridge, the Brontës - and painters, Ruskin and Turner. The landscape inspired Coleridge, and he came up with the word mountaineering and he's believed to be the first man to climb every peak in the Lake District. Melvyn visits the home of William and Dorothy Wordsworth at Dove Cottage in the Lake District. The area around Coniston water was home to John Ruskin. The poet Ted Hughes, lived in Mytholmroyd in West Yorkshire...and Melvyn says that it's impossible to think northern moorland without bringing to mind the way the Brontës have inscribed themselves on the landscape.
