On this week's episode of the Joy of Football Podcast, Neil and Martin discuss a LOT of Crystal Palace and their FA Cup triumph! We start with ‘One Trophy Wonders' all about teams (such as Palace) who have won one trophy, and what it means for their history. Next, it's 'Explain That...' which centres on clubs who have previously had back-to-back relegations from the top flight. Then 'The Way We Were', which dives into Nottingham Forest European qualification and history. Martin's Letter from the Gantry is fixated on Goodison's farewell and how it proves (along with Crystal Palace at Wembley), just how important fans are. And we finish with our usual ‘Three of the Best'.Join Neil Barnett (former Chelsea touch-liner announce and football journalist) alongside the voice of the Premier League Martin Tyler in celebrating the greatest addiction in the World!00:00 Intro01:12 Crystal Palace win the FA Cup08:57 One Trophy Wonders (Birmingham City, Blackpool, Oxford United & Luton)27:11 Explain That... On many levels, Paul Simpson could be regarded as one of the best players to have pulled on an Oxford United shirt. A shrewd signing from Manchester City after United tumbled out of the First Division in 1988, 'Simmo' found his feet under the stewardship of Brian Horton and David Fogg and quickly became a huge crowd favourite. Some of his strikes are among United's greatest of all time and he recalled some fantastic stories of a wonderful friendship with Mickey Lewis. After leaving the Manor, Simmo went on to have a stellar career in the Premier League with Derby County, before going into management and international coaching.A fascinating listen! Hosted on Acast. Was Oxford United's 1980s rise the most remarkable in English football? From lower-league obscurity to top-flight triumph, Oxford United's journey in the 1980s was one of football's most dramatic transformations. But was it a true fairytale, or was it built on bold ambition? In this episode, Graham, Jamie, and guest Scott Walkinshaw uncover the club's incredible rise, their Milk Cup victory, and the key figures who made it all possible. In this episode:
Behind The Badge had the pleasure of spending well over an hour in the company of the former Oxford United defender Eddie Odhiambo.Eddie's football journey started in the parks of Oxford with his brothers, before he was 'poached' by Southampton just as he was beginning to make his way through the ranks at United.Returning to his boyhood club under Jim Smith during the club's tumultuous first season in the Conference was an 'experience' for Eddie, before he enjoyed recalling a roller-coaster spell playing for Graham Westley at Stevenage. Level with Bud Houghton on 75 goals, only six players have found the net more times for Oxford United than Paul Moody.A true goalscoring legend, Moods is as much remembered for the different types of goals he scored as the sheer number. As well as being a crucial part of the 1995-96 promotion winning team, the striker's goals in his second spell probably saved the club from back-to-back relegations during a torrid first season at the Kassam Stadium in 2001-02.Dan and James spoke to Paul about everything, both on and off the pitch, the majority of it good but some of it not. Frustration was the overriding emotion again as Norwich City let another opportunity to make up ground on their play-off rivals slip through their fingers with a draw against Oxford United. It was the same old story as far as Johannes Hoff Thorup's side are concerned, with a bright start being followed by a soft concession before a failure to convert possession in chances.
