Four friends - Rajaraman, KPS, Krish, and Thiyagu - started Chargebee in a room in Rajaraman's apartment in Chennai, India in June 2011. The goal was to build a company together. Today, they are a global team of truth-seeking problem-solvers who are fearless idealists who genuinely believe that they can change the world. Chargebee is a subscription and recurring billing management solutions company that helps businesses manage their billing, payments, subscriptions and invoicing services efficiently. Founded in 2011, Chargebee offers a SaaS solution that simplifies billing complexities and operations for subscription businesses, while delivering seamless customer experiences. In a world where everyone from Apple to Majestic Wines are focusing on subscription models to secure recurring revenue streams Chargebee is making quite a name for itself. The SaaS platform helps businesses manage and grow their revenue by automating subscriptions, billing, invoicing, payments and revenue recognition processes and it provides key reports, metrics and insights into their subscription business. The emerging leader in SaaS subscription management and recurring billing solution is currently used by thousands of customers across 53 countries. It also announced expansion of its international operations with the opening of its European Headquarters in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Chargebee also recently raised $18 Million in Series-C led by Insight Venture Partners. But I wanted to find out more about the inspirational story of how four friends would go on to help businesses leverage the subscription economy. Krish Subramanian, Co-founder & CEO of Chargebee joins me on my daily tech podcast to share the story behind Chargebee. I also learn how the new headquarters will enable Chargebee to better support growth and service opportunities across Europe.

This week Holly speaks to Rowan Gormley, founder of Naked Wines and CEO of Majestic Wines. Rowan grew up in South Africa, but moved to the UK, after following his wife to London where he worked for none other than Richard Branson! After setting up Virgin money, and then Virgin wines, he was unceremoniously fired, leading him to start his own company Naked Wines. Disrupting the world of wine with his business, through his crowdfunded platform - Rowan’s mission is to change the wine industry so that the makers and customers are given a fair price for the best wine. So far, Naked Wines has pumped over £100 million pounds into supporting over 200 wine-makers all around the world. Rowan sold his business to Majestic in 2017 and is now at the helm of both businesses as CEO. In this meeting of minds, Holly and Rowan discuss the role that independents and face to face will play in our future, the ethos of loyalty underpinning business decisions, rather than 'quick wins', as well as the ultimate importance of the power being put in the hands of the customer. When I arrived for our interview at his farm near Bungay in Suffolk, Rowan Gormley, in shorts and a pink golf shirt, was busy watering plants in a small greenhouse. There was no indication from him that a few hours later he’d be hosting 300 people in a marquee set up between his homestead and the ruins of Mettingham Castle, built by one Sir John de Norwich in 1342. This historical structure might be on his grounds, but there’s nothing baronial about this fellow. As you’ll hear in what became an entrepreneurial masterclass. That’s Gormley’s style. Relaxed, informal, engaging. So we sat out in his garden during the height of a hot English summer, mercifully cooled by a breeze from the Atlantic a few miles away. In person his style reminded me a bit of Richard Branson, which is not really surprising considering that for some years Gormley worked closely with the famous founder of Virgin. The story starts in the South African industrial town called Boksburg…….a place better known for producing pugilists – like heavyweight champion Gerrie Coetzee - rather than for disruptors who are changing the world......
