Make Straight, Make Straight, the Highway of the King (Matthew 3:1-12) by Faith Family Church Oak Grove
Join us as Pastor Greg leads us through the second week of this series.
In a self-centered world, John the Baptist teaches us to look away from ourselves to the coming Savior, Jesus Christ. In this advent sermon, we learn to listen to the cry of the voice in the wilderness, saying "Make straight the way of the Lord!"
This week we reflect on the peace brought through Christ's coming kingdom. But, Peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice. In our text, John the Baptist's fiery confrontation is the necessary disruption that prepares us for God's true peace. God's Peace calls us to address the violence within us all. There always seems to be something about the season of Advent that heightens for us the absence of "shalom" or fullness of peace we ought to experience in this world. This season invites us to listen afresh to the prophets, and to ignite our prophetic imagination for the peace to which we are ultimately called. ---------- Click here to access resources for supporting immigrants: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1G9suVgJsS8X6TdH6ec2TBRKTz3dCqzQ2dPzUor4TKHc/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.ejsud9n02yg8 Thank you for joining us today! The essay emphasizes the role of Christians in shaping a society aligned with biblical values such as justice, integrity, and love. It advocates for intentional action in politics and daily life to reflect God's truth and foster unity. Christians are called to act as a light to others, guiding them to God by living purposefully and selflessly. The text explores the tension between selfishness and selflessness, questioning how these approaches align with Christ's mission. It stresses the importance of balance, as all are equal in God's eyes, and no one has a greater obligation to uplift others. This equality underscores the need for a "flat" church and a transactional society where value is exchanged fairly. Finally, the essay argues that enabling sin or taking unearned rewards hinders the work of the Holy Spirit. The resolution lies in creating a "transactional church" that encourages accountability and mutual responsibility while maintaining a focus on winning souls to Christ.

12 Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. 14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; 16 that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears. The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Heb 12:12–17.
John the Baptist humbly acknowledges that he is not the Christ, but rather one who makes straight the way of the Lord for others to follow. (Lectionary #205) January 2, 2023 - Cathedral Rectory - Superior, WI Fr. Andrew Ricci - www.studyprayserve.com

St. John's and Isaiah's Words and Advent On this second Sunday of Advent there are a remarkable set of readings. The first reading (not included within this audio) is from the Book of Isaiah. The author of the reading is unknown, since it was written about two hundred years after Isaiah. But it was written in the spirit of other parts of the Book. When it was first read, it caused a shocking outburst. Isaiah proclaimed, because of the disobedience of the people, the kingdom will come crashing down. And so, it was. The Temple came crashing down, the kingdom destroyed, and its people sent into exile. Some two hundred years later, a person in the same spirit of Isaiah, spoke to a crowd feeling the consequences of Isaiah's prophecy. Spoken to an exiled group of people who had little to no hope, the Book of Isaiah's words says . . . Give comfort to My people. Hear more in the Homily as to the significance of this statement. Make Straight the Path of the Lord St. John the Baptist proclaims . . . Make straight the path of the Lord . . . these words have a double meaning. Make straight the pathways of your heart . . . toward the Lord. It also meant Make straight . . . your way back home. Hear more within the Homily. St. John announces the Coming of the Lord. Hear what St. John's and Isaiah's words have to do with Advent. Understand why we honor St. John and his words during every Mass. Listen to St. John's and Isaiah's Words and Advent. In Autumn 1967, Elisabeth Elliot visited Jerusalem to see for herself if the Israeli victory in the Six-Day War had indeed brought about a ‘new' Jerusalem, in fulfillment of the Biblical prophecies of the Redemption of the Holy City. What she came away with is an intensely personal account of the city, its monuments, and the suffering of its people. But nonetheless prophetic. As yet another episode of war rages in the Middle East, Pastor Marwan Aboul-Zelof decided to revisit Elliot's 1969 out-of-print book, Furnace of the Lord: Reflections on the Redemption of the Holy City, record it and share it on the Didomi podcast in the hopes that Elliot's voice speaks to us today, and to help Christians engage in peacemaking in the region and bring about healing, reconciliation and peace. This is the sixteenth chapter of her book, Make Straight in the Desert a Highway. The seventeenth and final chapter will be published next. John the Baptist knew his message: "Get ready." His mission was to point not at himself, but to Jesus, the Lamb of God. Our lives can look like that, too.

In the Scripture and throughout Orthodox Tradition, the holy Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist John occupies a place parallel though not identical to that of the Holy Virgin Mary. Yet he is at the same time a more enigmatic and lesser-understood figure in Christianity. Fr. Stephen De Young and Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick together discuss the Voice that prepared the way for the coming of God in the flesh.
