Marina Shifrin, writer of Pickled Herring, and Bryan Simpson and Taylor Simpson, creators of Creating Things. This conversation was recorded as part of a special live podcast and film screening event we held last month at the Library. The filmmakers—who grew up here in Deerfield—all traveled home to share their films and an illuminating panel discussion with an audience of community members, friends, and family. You'll hear how Marina, Bryan, and Taylor all reconnected on the film festival circuit, as well as entertaining and deeply felt reflections on the surprising thematic connections between the films, which both center on fathers and the power of translating life into art. The documentary Creating Things (2022) was created by brothers Bryan Simpson and Taylor Simpson and uses clips from an interview with their late father, Roger Simpson, in which he shares his personal philosophy of creativity as an artist, creative director, and person. Set to Taylor's beautiful score, and featuring pieces of art and family mementos, it is a moving exploration of art-making and legacy. Creating Things won Best Documentary at the 2023 Pittsburgh Shorts film festival. We are honored to announce that Bryan and Taylor have made Creating Things available to stream for free on their website as of our podcast release, in celebration of their father's birthday. Pickled Herring (2023), written by our guest Marina Shifrin, and directed by and starring Milana Vayntrub, tells the autobiographical story of a woman who has a major accident requiring assistance for her basic needs. Enter her Russian immigrant father, who has ideas of his own on how to help, from finding the best Russian foods or fixing her garage to cultural clashes over family, lifestyle, and art. Pickled Herring won Best Narrative Short at the Santa Clara International Film Festival. You can watch the trailer of Pickled Herring on Marina's website. Marina has written about her father before, including in her book of essays 30 Before 30: How I Made a Mess of My 20s and You Can Too. Marina Shifrin is a comedy writer who created an interpretive dance resignation video garnering millions of views. She has seen success throughout her professional career, including having worked on Talk Show the Game Show (TruTV), Problematic (Comedy Central), Comedy Central Presents: ClusterFest (duh, Comedy Central), Wizard School Dropout (Eko) and she has written on a handful of pilots you've never seen. Previously, Marina was an Emmy-award winning digital producer on @midnight (Comedy Central, again). That's her resume, but what got her on my radar was her book 30 Before 30. In this episode, we discuss Marina's book 30 Before 30, a collection of essays detailing thirty things she wanted to do before the age of thirty and ranging in scope from the simple (Ride A Bike Over the Brooklyn Bridge, Donate Hair) to the life-changing (Move to A Different Country, Become Famous). Each story shows readers that we don't all have it figured out, and that's okay, even if you are way over thirty. Marina also offers insightful and useful advice on preparing to go viral and to handle closure and celebrate milestones in these pandemic times. Tune in to hear Marina’s thoughts pertaining to: A random reaction Marina received about her resignation video. (5:00) What to do if you don’t have closure in your life: write it for yourself. (10:00) Different industries were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and many don’t have a lot of closure in their careers because of the crisis, Marina offers some thoughtful advice. (12:05) A reminder to go back to what you’ve always wanted in your career amidst this time of uncertainty. (14:02) Comedy relief during times of stress and how we can all get some comedy relief. (16:00) The constant battle between Internet comedy vs. stand-up comedy and how the delivery of comedy may change in the near future. (17:00) Marina shares how to deliver a really good joke. (19:00) On embarrassment: In 5th grade, Marina decided to lose the emotion of feeling embarrassed. ( 23:00) How to handle internet trolls and fear you may have of editing your LinkedIn headlines, plus a hack to help you deal with trolls. (28:00) What inspired Marina to put together her 30 Before 30 list. (30:56) How to prepare to go viral and some of the things Marina did when planning, creating and releasing her viral video. (36:23) Why should they give themselves a ten years timespan to hit their professional stride and find their voice? (45:03) What’s on Marina’s list for her 30’s and beyond. (48:00) Marina shares a story about Donald Glover, NYU, and a USB drive with a script on it; and how that story inspires her to always be prepared. (59:00) Graduation Season in the U.S. is here, so I asked Marina this question because she is a child of immigrants: As a child of immigrants, what would you suggest to those who are set to graduate in 2020 or experiencing a major milestone, how can they celebrate their accomplishments in light of the pandemic? 30 Before 30: How I Made a Mess of My 20s and You Can Too, documents Marina Shifrin's quest to complete 30 goals before turning 30. Each chapter in the book covers one of her goals, from riding a bike across the Brooklyn Bridge and living in a different country, to becoming famous and falling in love. Marina, who works as a TV writer and freelancer, is also known for her 2013 viral video where she quit her job while dancing to Kanye West and for her Modern Love column in the New York Times. Our conversation gets into the backstories behind these public sensations and the pressures of writing (and living) in the digital age. Marina was born in Russian and grew up in Skokie and Highland Park and attended Deerfield High School, so we also hear about how her time at DHS influenced her outlook. Listen for a truly funny and heartfelt conversation about Marina's many lives, her advice for twenty-somethings, and how she writes her way through the strange demands on our generation. Some crushes are brief: the guy at the gym, the girl on Twitter, your barista. But others are epic -- and take on a life of their own. Olivia Munn ("The Predator") reads Marina Shifrin's essay.
Something was nagging Marina Shifrin. As a freshly minted adult with student loan payments, a barely hospitable New York apartment, a “real” job she hated that paid her enough to get by if she also worked two other jobs, something needed to change. Over a few bottles of Two Buck Chuck, Marina and her friend each made lists of thirty things they’d do before the age of thirty. The first thing on Marina’s list was, “Quit My Shitty Job.” So she did, and just like that the List powered her through her twenties. In 30 Before 30, Marina takes readers through her list and shares personal stories about achieving those goals. Ranging in scope from the simple (Ride A Bike Over the Brooklyn Bridge, Donate Hair) to the life-changing (Move to A Different Country, Become internet Famous), each story shows readers that we don’t all have it figured out, and that’s okay. But for Marina, she did become internet famous (a viral video of her quitting her job after moving to Asia has nearly 19 million views on You Tube) and now writes for Comedy Central’s hit show @Midnight, is also an in-demand stand up, and had a very popular Modern Love column published in the New York Times. None of that would have happened if she didn’t start her list that night. Thank you, Two Buck Chuck.

Marina Shifrin quit her job in the best way possible: publicly, and while dancing. Her video, "An Interpretive Dance For My Boss Set To Kanye West's Gone" received 15 million views in under two weeks, vaulting her to global Internet stardom and earned her appearances on the Today Show, The Queen Latifah Show and other outlets. Here the comedian-writer shares the inside story of how the video came to be, what it's like being at the center of an Internet maelstrom and about the next stage of her post-viral life. Her immense talent has taken her to great places and now its taken her to the immensest place of all: The Winners and Losers Show. In this podcast: one of the largest viral videos of 2013, writing for the internet, broken hearts and bruised egos, living in Taiwan, Next Media Animation, the difference between managers and agents, the big bad YouTube world, being a offered a job on-air by Queen Latifah, the cool coolness of Carson Daly, the boundaries of bosses, living in LA, Hank's moment of sad horrific irony, and so much more!
