Most movies these days are remakes or sequels, leaving very little room for originality. Free Guy is by no means an original concept, borrowing a lot from various sources (see The Truman Show) and yet it feels fresh and creative. It's a bit shameless at times, playing to emotion and cheap tricks, but man do we love it.

This episode, I look into the mind numbing theory that we may be living in a computer simulated reality. Many experts beleive that we are either living in a simulation or may have the ability to simulate the universe at some point in humanity. Movies like the Matrix and the Truman Show give us a glimpse of what a simulated world would be like, but could it really be true? Why are we so perfectly placed in the universe for life to thrive? Who is controlling this simulated reality if it's true? What proof do we have that we may be in a simulation? All these questions are just a small piece to a head jarring theory. What do you think?

In the movie Truman Show, a man finds out he has been living in an artificial world that someone else made. Once he realizes this, he finds a way to leave that world and steps into the whole world. Pastor Eric's talk this week is helping us to understand many of us are living with only part of the story and not realizing there is a much more wholistic story of what God wants to do. What if redemption from sin wasn't the whole story? What if there is more to the Kingdom than just being set free from darkness? Perhaps our struggles with our existence is deeply connected to not knowing the whole story? Let us step into the whole story and a new world that God is actively engaged in.

Phil & Jake are back to rank John Carpenter's 1986 film Big Trouble in Little China, the musical subgenre known as Bro-Country, and Baby Yoda on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: The kid in Madonna's Open Your Heart video isn't Leo Dicaprio, he's Felix Howard, who is now an A&R guy. Actors that we talk about include Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, Victor Wong, James Hong, Danny Trejo, He Huy Quan, Al Leong (here's his wedding announcement), Dennis Quaid, Harrison Ford, Jason Mantzoukas, Tom Cruise, Jackie Chan and Rodney Dangerfield. Other movies discussed include Everything Everywhere All at Once, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Overboard (which Phil thinks is really indefensible because Kurt Russell's character brainwashes Goldie Hawn's; “it's a Rapemantic comedy”), Minority Report, Dreamscape (filmed in Stockton, CA), Innerspace, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Golden Child, Friday, Caddyshack, The Matrix, Trading Places, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Flashdance, The Truman Show, The Wizard of Oz, Howard the Duck and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Jack Burton is a very influential protagonist, maybe even more so than Snake Plissken. He's sort of John Wayne as a buffoon. Bruce Willis' persona owes something to Jack Burton. If you want to hear an even more in-depth discussion of Big Trouble in Little China, check out this episode of the Blank Check podcast. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson owns the remake rights to Big Trouble in Little China and makes noises about a remake from time to time. John Carpenter's soundtrack (and especially the theme song) are a must-listen. Here's the New York Magazine article in which Jody Rosen first coined the term “Bro-Country.” Here's a history of the Country laundry-list song. Dr. Suess' pants with no one inside them are from the last story in the Sneetches book. “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line is maybe the ur-text of Bro-Country. Or– going further back– in could be either “Honky Tonkin'” or “Jambalaya” by Hank Williams. Other songs discussed by include “Big Green Tractor” and “Dirt Road Anthem” by Jason Aldean, “Sand in My Boots” by Morgan Wallen, “Jack & Diane” by John Mellencamp, “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” by Trace Adkins, “Dilemma” by Nelly w/ Kelly Rowland, “If That Ain't Country” by David Allan Coe, “That's My Kind of Night” by Luke Brian, “Friday” by Rebecca Black, “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” by Hank Williams Jr., “If You've Got the Money, I've Got the Time” by Lefty Frizzell, “Friends In Low Places” by Garth Brooks, “Tulsa Time” by Don Williams, “Boys Round Here” by Blake Shelton, “New Truck” by Dylan Scott, “Beer With My Friends” by Shy Carter, “Beer” and “Turned Up On the Weekend” by Branchez & Big Wet, “American Pie” by Don McLean, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick, and “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt. He doesn't know it, but everything in Truman Burbank's (Jim Carrey) life is part of a massive TV set. Executive producer Christof (Ed Harris) orchestrates "The Truman Show," a live broadcast of Truman's every move captured by hidden cameras. Cristof tries to control Truman's mind, even removing his true love, Sylvia (Natascha McElhone), from the show and replacing her with Meryl (Laura Linney). As Truman gradually discovers the truth, however, he must decide whether to act on it.   In this "Utopia" genre pick, Nathan has chosen 1998's The Truman Show, for us to review!  This detailed look at Truman's life is well... it's disturbing, but also very insightful into the life experience.  We all dive deep into our thoughts about what the people are doing to Truman and how it can detail how real life actually is worked out.  A great cast, music is on point... but we can't look away at what this says for life.  So join us, tune in to your favorite reality show and lets watch our favorite character... The late 90's saw a run of films which deconstructed the idea that reality was an illusion; THE TRUMAN SHOW, THE MATRIX, DARK CITY all explored this theme in some way but David Fincher's 1997 THE GAME is the most paranoid of all of them. Michael Douglas is superb as affluent control freak Nicholas van Orton who finds himself involved in a conspiracy when brother Conrad gives him a gift certificate for the blandly-named Consumer Recreation Services promising a "profound life experience".Some typically great Fincher filmatism coupled with the expert pacing provided by editor James Haywood and the saturated cinematography of Harris Savides, this is a gripping and intriguing thriller which relies on a constant stream of narrative invention to throw its audience off guard, sometimes establishing characters as unreliable and then challenging that view within the same scene. Yes the plot goes off the rails in terms of plausibility by the time we get to the unforgettable ending but does it really matter when a film can build so much mood and tension and subvert your expectations this well, even after having seen it a few times? Earns an extra star for somehow making me want the torture of a wealthy investment banker to stop.

In 1998, Jim Carrey was in the midst of his peak comedic film era and yet he opted to join on The Truman Show, a film far from funny. At that time, we thought of Carrey as Ace Ventura or Lloyd Christmas and not as the sad sack that was Truman Burbank who, unbeknownst to him, was being broadcast to billions of people every second of the day. I talk to Zoo about the implications of this depressing "comedy."  The Truman Show is a reminder of the commercialization that was seen to this day. Everything is for sale, everything is a jammed pack full of advertisements and we may have lost some of our own identities in the process.Notes:‘The Truman Show': Weir and Niccol's Uplifting Yet Prophetically Disturbing Dystopian SatireHow we made The Truman Show – 20th anniversaryMusic by HoliznaCC0, Orphaned Media - Swingin' Richard

In light of our interview with Winning London's Rachel Roth, we thought this would be a good time to replay one of our all time favorite episodes from the very beginning of our podcast, "Mary-Kate and Ashley: The Truman Show." In this episode, we outline how Mary-Kate and Ashley were plucked from a regular life as two anonymous twin babies to becoming two of the most successful and well-known child stars of all time. This is an important episode for understanding how Mary-Kate and Ashley ended up where they were in 2001 when Rachel crossed paths with them, and what we'll be talking more about in the episodes to come this season. We'll be back next week for a brand new episode, but until then, please enjoy this re-release of a classic from our vault! -----------------------------------------------------------------Mary-Kate and Ashley were just 6 months old when they had the audition that propelled them to stardom.
