The right thing to do isn't always what you want to do and vice versa, so how do we know right from wrong? Jack knocks on his estranged dad's door to ask for money so he can afford a home to fit his growing family; Toby initially fights against it, but reluctantly opts for additional surgery to avoid more serious complications down the road. Randall fights tooth and nail to find a treatment to give William more time, but stops when he is truly able to hear what William wants, which is to stop chemo; and Kevin doesn't feel passion in his relationship with Sloane, but stays because he believes it's the right thing to do. We all face moments where the right thing to do isn't obvious, but all we can do is our best. Decisions, decisions… Let's sift through. Marina Shifrin, writer of Pickled Herring, and Bryan Simpson and Taylor Simpson, creators of Creating Things. This conversation was recorded as part of a special live podcast and film screening event we held last month at the Library. The filmmakers—who grew up here in Deerfield—all traveled home to share their films and an illuminating panel discussion with an audience of community members, friends, and family. You'll hear how Marina, Bryan, and Taylor all reconnected on the film festival circuit, as well as entertaining and deeply felt reflections on the surprising thematic connections between the films, which both center on fathers and the power of translating life into art.   The documentary Creating Things (2022) was created by brothers Bryan Simpson and Taylor Simpson and uses clips from an interview with their late father, Roger Simpson, in which he shares his personal philosophy of creativity as an artist, creative director, and person. Set to Taylor's beautiful score, and featuring pieces of art and family mementos, it is a moving exploration of art-making and legacy.  Creating Things won Best Documentary at the 2023 Pittsburgh Shorts film festival. We are honored to announce that Bryan and Taylor have made Creating Things available to stream for free on their website as of our podcast release, in celebration of their father's birthday.  Pickled Herring (2023), written by our guest Marina Shifrin, and directed by and starring Milana Vayntrub, tells the autobiographical story of a woman who has a major accident requiring assistance for her basic needs. Enter her Russian immigrant father, who has ideas of his own on how to help, from finding the best Russian foods or fixing her garage to cultural clashes over family, lifestyle, and art.  Pickled Herring won Best Narrative Short at the Santa Clara International Film Festival. You can watch the trailer of Pickled Herring on Marina's website. Marina has written about her father before, including in her book of essays 30 Before 30: How I Made a Mess of My 20s and You Can Too. Listen to our 2019 podcast conversation with Marina on 30 Before 30, or check it out here at the Library.  Blog post: https://www.deerfieldlibrary.org/deerfield-filmmakers/ We hope you enjoy our 63rd interview episode! Hello creatures of the night, welcome back to Gem Mint Horror. Your favorite night radio show, I am your host Joel here to keep you insomniacs company while fighting off sleep. Now if this is your first time tuning into the show well here on Gem Mint Horror we talk about lesser known horror films in order to find you guys a new favorite horror movie. We don't talk about big budget horror films or new releases on regular episodes. I usually aim for films that are lesser known or deserve a second chance because all films deserve that respect. Now we have finally made it to the Christmas season if you insomniacs celebrate it but for the whole month of December I will be recommending horror films that have those Christmas Undertones underneath them or just in the background. Films that you will love to add to your every year list around this season and films that you could watch while its snowing outside and you have your Christmas tree/lights on. Ahh isn't that a nice setting I just describe and if your not a holly jolly person well at least they are horror films I am recommending haha now on with tonights episode, Tonight we are talking about a film that has a small following but definitely deserves more attention. That film is the 2021 video game adaptation of Werewolfs Within, directed by Josh Ruben and also staring Sam Richardson and Milana Vayntrub in this buddy horror film. Werewolfs Within is about a video game adaptation of a video game about Werewolfs attacking a small town. Let me know what you guys thought of the movie and the episode on the socials below, see you late night freaks next Friday !

Midway through a grueling, muddy obstacle course, Shani Tran is so grateful for the support of her father, her teammate, who cheers her on and pulls her through. But in other parts of life, she knows, he's just not there for her in the same way. And that's ... okay. She shares three stories — with humor, and with honesty — that build to a lifelong lesson about seeing people for who they are, not who you wish they'd be, and learning to take responsibility for your own happiness. Have you ever thought to yourself, “celebrities have it SO easy! They've got the money, the fame, the friends… it must be so nice to have everything handed to you.”  But how did they get to celebrity status? Was hard work involved or just dumb luck?  Holy COW, do Gay and Mike have a super special treat for you today!!  Meet Milana Vayntrub. You may know her from the movies, “Ghostbusters” or “Mother's Little Helpers,” “Love” on Netflix, the hit TV Show, “This is Us,” or as Lily from the AT&T commercials, (frankly… she's everywhere!) and Gay and Mike got to chat with her this week.  This episode is super cool because they got deep AND shallow, they got weird and they got real. They talked about creativity, self sabotage, procrastination, and a little bit about succulent gardens, PLUS Mike and Gay were able to give Milana a little life advice too!  Gay and Mike really admire the profession and craft of acting… especially the folks who do it well. They felt like they got inside the mind and heart of Milana, getting to know her on a deep soul level. Seeing the world through the eyes of this brilliant actor was one of the most moving parts of today's interview.  You're going to walk away with some really, really good ideas.  Of course, we are very interested in “Big Leaps,” here on The Big Leap podcast and Milana didn't disappoint. She has taken some VERY big leaps in her life, had major pivot points and catapulted herself to different levels by doing so.  Milana is from Uzbekistan, (part of the former Soviet Union) so she comes from a long line of people who have taken big leaps, a migrating Russian Jew. Her first big leap was coming to America when she was two years old, because even though it wasn't her choice, it instilled in her a sense of adventure, that change is okay, and that with risk comes upward momentum.   Milana has parents who taught her how to work well under pressure and if she really spent time looking for something, she'd find it. This is the kind of mindset that was instilled in her, early on in life that informed a lot of her decisions later.  Her mom put her in acting class when she was five or six years old, even though she didn't really speak the language but Milana was naturally outgoing and liked mimicking things on TV. Her mom was not afraid to take risks so going on auditions as a kid was another Big Leap taken early in her career and life.  About 10 years ago a friend advised Milana to attend a Tony Robbins event. They told her it would change her life… and IT DID. It was a moment that reinstalled the idea of taking big risks and when she realized that her industry, (acting, writing, directing) has a lot of gatekeepers and systems in place that makes it so that you constantly need to be asking permission to be working… it didn't work for her.  It was actually after one of Tony's seminars that she realized she needed to start creating her own work and that she had a lot of limiting beliefs around why she shouldn't or couldn't. So she started a YouTube channel, which was just her and her friend making videos on her couch, inviting friends over and being idiots together, but in a way that totally launched her career!  She created a web series called, “Let's Talk about Something More Interesting,” and started inviting friends. Then she got a little bit of traction and started inviting fancier friends. Eventually she had Bob Odenkirk, BJ Novak and Matt Damon on her couch. Through that she got the attention of a great manager who got her a great agent and helped her get work all over the place.  Believing in herself and realizing that she could do hard things was a MAJOR Big Leap for Milana.  Milana confessed during our time together that if she had ONE wish for YOU,
