"If you think of an organization as a machine, you're going to try to engineer your way out of the problems." says Marty Goldberg. In this episode, host Mike Horn interviews Martin Goldberg, a leader in the field of organization development, about his new book "Out of the Workplace Trap: A Theory and Therapy of Organizations Based on the Work of Wilhelm Reich." Goldberg shares his insights on what it means to truly understand and intervene in organizations. He challenges traditional notions of organizations as mechanical systems or purely social entities, and instead presents them as natural energy systems. Drawing from the work of Wilhelm Reich, Goldberg explores the role of emotional energy in organizations and how it can become trapped, leading to dysfunction and stagnation. Throughout the conversation, Goldberg emphasizes the importance of understanding the natural function of an organization and how its energy flows. He highlights the need for leaders and practitioners to go beyond surface-level interventions and address the underlying emotional energy that drives the system. By doing so, organizations can break free from the workplace trap and unleash their full potential. This episode offers a fresh perspective on organization development and provides practical insights for leaders and coaches who want to create meaningful change. It challenges conventional wisdom and encourages listeners to embrace a more holistic approach to understanding and leading organizations. Discover how understanding and harnessing emotional energy can revolutionize the way you lead and transform your organization. Quotes: "Organizations are conceived and born and they are born to fulfill some function." (06:32 | Martin Goldberg) "There's an energy streaming in the system that is in the human animal. They come together to do some common things based on what the system is constituted to do and there's emotional energy associated with it like, when founders found an organization there's almost always excitement. That was sort of missing in the classical formulations - the emotional energy of the excitement." (6:28 | Martin Goldberg) "In some ways the more networked we are, the less emotionally present we are." A two-parter from Midwest Gaming Classic 2018. First, Kevin Bunch and Brian Clark talk the history of Atari 7800 with Jeremy. Then, as a backup, Marty Goldberg (and Bob!) join Jeremy and Kevin to explain how the Atari Crash wasn't totally Atari's fault.
Hello, and welcome to a very special interview-only episode of Antic, the Atari 8-bit podcast. I am Randy Kindig, one of your hosts for this podcast. I say “special” because it’s not often that you get a chance to talk with an icon like the one we talk with today. Kevin Savetz and myself were given the chance to sit down, so to speak, with “Mr. Atari” Nolan Bushnell and spend a few minutes shooting the breeze. If you need any more introduction for this guest, then you’re probably listening to the wrong podcast. In fact, he’s one of those guys that can go by a single name “Nolan” and everyone in the Atari community knows who you’re talking about. Before we get to the interview, I want to thank the Atari community on the AtariAge forums for suggesting questions for Nolan. When we put out a request for questions, who knew we would get such a large and varied response. Regrettably, we only had time for some of them. Many of you will recognize the questions that you submitted and we are very grateful for your help. I also want to thank Marty Goldberg for his suggestions and guidance as someone who has talked with Nolan in the past. This interview was conducted on July 30, 2015. Teaser Quotes: “wouldn't it have been fun if Atari had owned the Internet?” “Did you regret selling it? Every day of my life!” “Ray Kassar? Oh, he was a disaster.” “Warner didn't want to have anything to do with me. They felt that if I was back in and made a success of it it would make them look stupid.”
Curt Vendel & Marty Goldberg, Atari Historians Welcome to Antic, the Atari 8-bit podcast. I’m Randy Kindig, one of the hosts of the podcast, and your host for this episode. To give you a little background on this interview and where it came from, I also host another podcast on retrocomputing called Floppy Days, where I cover various vintage computers in the order that they were introduced. I recently covered the Atari 400 & 800 computers and had asked Curt Vendel and Marty Goldberg, Atari historians, to help cover the history portion of the podcast. I used excerpts from that interview on the podcast, but only used a small portion of the interview for that. So, I thought I would air the entire interview, since it covers Atari computers, on Antic. In this interview we discuss the history of the 400 & 800 in-depth, as well as discussing the passing of Steve Bristow, an Atari icon, the status of the Atari history books by Curt & Marty, and much more. This interview was conducted February 25, 2015 via Skype. Teaser Quotes: “the whole idea was to make a more advanced Atari VCS, Atari 2600” “when you bring a microprocessor in there, a 6507, and then you're trying to make them as intelligent a peripheral as possible, it can add to the expense” “When Atari designed the 400/800, it really was designed as a consumer computer” “there's an ad going around now, it's popular on Twitter, to make fun of how Atari says the computer will never become obsolete” “they only viewed Atari as an entertainment asset” Links: Retro Gamer Magazine RETRO Magazine “Atari Inc: Business is Fun" at Amazon Atari Book site Atari Museum Steve Bristow
I’m particularly excited to be bringing you this 2-part episode because I will be covering the Atari 400 & 800 computers. This first episode will cover the history of these machines and next month I will cover Web sites, emulation, books, software, magazines, tech specs, and much more. Even more exciting, for both episodes I have several special guest hosts helping me cover these topics. I think you’re going to enjoy these.
