Colin Burns had only 4.5 years of experience in hospitality when he applied for the club manager's position at Winged Foot, one of the most storied private golf clubs in the nation, if not the world. And, after an eight-month search process, he was selected as the club's next general manager – all 31 years ago when Colin had just crossed the line into his thirties. He recalls the president of the club asking him if Colin weren't a tad young for the job. Colin replied: It's not a permanent condition. As we watch a generation of these long-serving club managers move into retirement or consulting – in addition to Colin, we lost Brian Kroh just this month at John's Island Club in Vero Beach, Florida – we are left with a legacy from which we can all learn. Colin's experience is second to none. He managed the US Open during the height of Covid. Five full years of planning all going down the drain as he had to work with the Governor of New York and plan the tournament without spectators as Bryson DeChambeau put his indelible mark on the sport. Now as he joins executive search firm GGA, Colin discusses how every club has a different environment and that search committees, managers and search firms should understand the club's culture first before trying to match a candidate to the club. Do Things with People, Not to Them If you really desire a quality organization you should do things with people, not to them. Burns has put this as his central motif throughout his career. And, with that teamwork sentiment, Colin points out that the hierarchy of a private members club staff doesn't always equate to salary levels. The director of golf, tennis, squash, or even agronomy, may indeed be the highest paid member of staff at many clubs. And what's even more meaningful to club staff members than base compensation? Housing is top of Colin's list and finds it the top of his staff members' list as well. Retiring To a Zenith at Apogee And finally, Apogee means zenith or the highest point of development – and Colin's new project is certainly a zenith of physical land development and a highlight of a continuing, outstanding career. Originally named COO for an incredible project based in Hobe Sound, Florida, now senior advisor, Colin is truly excited about Apogee. It's a three-course extravaganza – or as he calls it “Streamsong on Steroids.” Designers Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner, Mike Davis and Tom Fazio and Kyle Phillips have teamed up with financial backing from Dolphins owner Steve Ross. Colin takes us through the plans and the vastness of this incredible project, and how this team is betting on South Florida moving up to Martin County in the very near future beyond Jupiter and toward sleepy Stuart.

This episode discusses the misconceptions and intimidating beliefs surrounding meditation, particularly in relation to its origins as a practice primarily for monks and renunciates. In this episode, Michael interviews Leah Santa Cruz, a meditation teacher who has been living in Bali for the last six years. Prior to teaching meditation, she worked in the tech industry and the startup world, including half a decade at Microsoft. She experienced several waves of burnout and turned to yoga and meditation as a healing path for himself. Initially, she took a yoga teacher training and was pushed onto the path of meditation by her teacher, Steve Ross, a former Vedic monk. Now, Leah teaches people how to guide others in meditation and leads her own teacher trainings. She believes that meditation is a great compliment to yoga and that all who are on the path of yoga should learn more about it. Leah talks about her own experiences with meditation and how their teacher, Dr. Lauren Roche, taught them to perceive meditation as a practice accessible to everyone, including householders, those who have bills to pay and other responsibilities. Leah episode highlights the importance of letting go of control and rigid thinking in order to truly experience the benefits of meditation, which is not limited to achieving pure thoughtlessness, but rather a greater sense of calm and self-awareness. This week Jody and I build on a recent LinkedIn post by Steve Ross. Steve referenced a previous Creating Disney Magic episode where we discussed the three P's of getting a promotion. Steve brought up a great point. There is another P needed for the equation: Patience. The 3 Ps of Getting a Promotion covered the importance of persistence, passion, and people. As Steve pointed out, patience is also vital in moving forward. Some circumstances require patience. Maybe it isn't the right time, and if you are patient, you may still get the promotion you are looking for. Patience and persistence go together. If you like where you are and know where you want to go, hang in there. Over time, you will find a path for the promotion you are looking for. You can't just wait around; you need to start doing things to improve yourself, so people have no reason to say no when the time comes. People want things now, but the more experience and exposure you have, the more authority you possess to hold it once you get it. Everything in life, whether working out, being a parent, or even battling traffic, requires patience and persistence. Persistence asks what it will take and then puts in the work to get it. Patience keeps you anchored and rooted while you work towards your goal. Outside forces can make traveling require extra patience and perseverance. Dr. Jeffrey Guss sits at one of the most fascinating and unusual intersections in all of mental health: between psychoanalysis, addiction treatment, and psychedelic psychotherapy. I wanted to have someone on the show to talk more about the “paradigm-shifting” nature of psychedelic psychotherapy: what that means exactly, and at a macro level, how this kind of therapy might provide some perspective on our current paradigms, like other forms of psychotherapy or mutual help groups. I also know Jeff to be an expansive and enthusiastic teacher with great love for these subjects, so it was a delight to reconnect with him on this episode of Flourishing After addiction.Jeff talks about his own experience with psychedelics and what drew him to psychoanalysis and addiction. He gives cautions about people who point to Michael Pollan's work and say, “I'll have what he's having” (a la Harry Met Sally). We also discuss the neuroscience of psychotherapy and the neuroscience of psychedelics, but we also talk about moving past the “chemical imbalance” or “broken brain” formulations of addiction to think more about spiritual and existential dimensions of treatment. And, Jeff gives his practical advice for anyone wondering about whether psychedelic psychotherapy is right for them, for addiction or otherwise--including some really important cautions. Jeffrey Guss, MD, is a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and researcher with specializations in psychoanalytic therapy, addictions and psychedelic therapy. He was Co-Principal Investigator and Director of Psychedelic Therapy Training for the NYU School of Medicine's study on psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy in the treatment of cancer related existential distress, as well as a study therapist on studies of psilocybin-assisted treatment of Major Depressive Disorder and MDMA-assisted Psychotherapy for PTSD. Dr. Guss is interested in the integration of psychedelic therapies with contemporary psychoanalytic theory and has published in Studies in Gender and Sexuality and Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society.
