Steve Kranish, Parker Brothers Frogger Steve Kranish is the creator of the Atari 8-bit and Atari 5200 versions of Frogger, the versions published by Parker Brothers. Parker Brothers had the rights to publish cartridge versions of Frogger. Sierra On-Line had already published versions of Frogger on floppy disk and cassette, so Parker Brothers bought the rights to use that version as the basis for its cartridge version. But there were a few problems: for one, the 13K cassette game would need to be shrunk to fit on an 8K cartridge. Another: the source code was lost. Steve also worked on an Atari 8-bit version of the board game Risk, and a game called Baker's Dozen, both of which were unfinished. He also worked on Project Zelda, Parker Brothers investigation into distributing Atari VCS games via cable television. This interview took place on March 2, 2025. In 2016, I interviewed John Harris, who programmed the Sierra Online version of Frogger (as well as Jawbreaker and Mouskattack). Check the show notes for the link to that.

Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan, Kris, and Dean board the Cartoon Express for a trip to Pac-Land! They watched the classic Pac-Man cartoon episode Sir Pac-a-Lot. How did it go? And how did they rank all the cartoons they've watched so far this year? Why are can openers so funny? What's up with all the hats? Let's find out! At the top of the show, Dean's been playing something called Deep Rock Galactic Survivor, which sounds like way too many words to be real. Meanwhile, Dan dives deeper into the world of the Pokemon Trading Card game, and spends some quality time with Pacific Drive, which is NOT the same thing as Pacific Rim. Kris, on the other hand, is obsessed with Ode to Castlevania, wildly unimpressed by Hatch Tales, and notices some fun new updates to his Atari VCS. Finally, in Week Old News, Monster Hunter becomes a shampoo, Phil Spencer spouts some nonsense about the Xbox's new ad campaign, Blaster Master makes its way to the Super NES, and more! Michal a Martin nám ukáží, proč technologické sny selhávají a co nás možná čeká v blízké budoucnosti. Poslechněte si poslední díl ságy Velké oči a nechte se vtáhnout do světa neúspěchů. Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris bring you the latest installment in the Alphabet Soup-er Series, where they discuss games once a month in alphabetical order. It was Dan's pick for the letter L and he went with Life Force for NES, a game that's anything but an L. Konami once again showed off their prowess on the NES with this wonderfully brilliant (and very difficult) scrolling shooter, complete with sounds and effects ripped straight out of Contra. How did this NES port hold up to its arcade-based big brothers? Let's Find out! At the top of the show, Dan complains that Sony has ruined The Show in its latest update, and discusses the difficulties in dealing with Thanos in Marvel Snap. Meanwhile, Kris tests out Princess Peach Showtime with a number of different audiences, all of whom have different opinions on the game, makes big plans to finally finish off Contra:Operation Galuga, and spends more quality time with his Atari VCS with games Milli & Greg, Cash Cow DX, and more. In Week Old News, Tekken flirts with Waffle House, ex-PlayStation boss rips some numbers out of his butt, the Nuon gets a fresh re-release, Dadish goes 3D, and what is that I see? IS that EVEN MORE? fWotD Episode 2457: Space Invaders Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Friday, 26 January 2024 is Space Invaders.Space Invaders is a 1978 shoot 'em up arcade video game developed and released by Taito in Japan, and licensed to Midway Manufacturing for overseas distribution. Commonly considered as one of the most influential video games of all time, Space Invaders was the first fixed shooter and set the template for the genre. The goal is to defeat wave after wave of descending aliens with a horizontally moving laser to earn as many points as possible.Designer Tomohiro Nishikado drew inspiration from North American target shooting games like Breakout (1976) and Gun Fight (1975), as well as science fiction narratives such as the novel The War of the Worlds (1897), the anime Space Battleship Yamato (1974), and the film Star Wars (1977). To complete development, he had to design custom hardware and development tools. Upon release, Space Invaders was an immediate commercial success; by 1982, it had grossed $3.8 billion ($13 billion in 2022-adjusted terms), with a net profit of $450 million ($1.6 billion in 2022 terms). This made it the best-selling video game and highest-grossing entertainment product at the time, and the highest-grossing video game of all time.Space Invaders is considered one of the most influential video games of all time. It ushered in the golden age of arcade video games. It was the inspiration for numerous video games and game designers across different genres, and has been ported and re-released in various forms. The 1980 Atari VCS version quadrupled sales of the VCS, thereby becoming the first killer app for video game consoles. More broadly, the pixelated enemy alien has become a pop culture icon, often representing video games as a whole. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:50 UTC on Friday, 26 January 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Space Invaders on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Ruth Neural.

Streamers for one popular game are going "on strike" in response to a download content system that is gambling. Is it fair for a game that charges full price, in a series that is released every year, to continue to milk gambling DLC for profits? We discuss this and offer our suggestions for how the game makers can do better. Gambling is also front and center on Twitch this week, as Twitch quickly responds to issues large streamers raised around gambling on the platform. However, why did they respond so fast to this compartively to other issues brought up months ago, such as hate raids. All this and more make up another week of the longest running video game podcast, Orange Lounge Radio! Also in the news: * Xbox Series X update removes DRM from Xbox One titles * GTA6 Hacker Reportedly taken into Custody * Blockbuster World Championships return * Atari "Recharged" Games to get Additional Content outside Atari VCS All this and more on the show where EVERY gamer has a voice-- Orange Lounge Radio!
