John Ray joined Atari Inc in 1977 as a hardware engineer, learning the ropes with 1978's Fire-Truck, arguably the first truly co-op arcade game and a distinctive arcade presence due in no small part to his analogue circuitry audio. Ray was also involved with the Atari-licensed versions of Namco's Dig Dug and Xevious, the awesome arcade version of Tetris and - into the 1990s - the hugely popular San Francisco Rush racing series of the 90s.
Jeff Bell was a hardware engineer in Atari Inc's coin-op division and officially the longest serving employee of the company; literally the last person to switch off the lights in 2004. Jeff walks us through his formative years learning the basics of electronics at his father's desk, the brotherhood of Atari Inc, suspected mob involvement in the early videogames industry and Nolan Bushnell's Bermuda shorts.
Senior corporate executive, serial entrepreneur, automotive designer and fine artist. Roger Hector is not only a successful businessman but a bona fide creative polymath. A long time ago, Roger sharpened his pencils at Atari Inc, working alongside co-founder Nolan Bushnell and creative director George Opperman on a vast range of videogame projects. Hector became R&D manager at Atari, before leaving to co-found his own games company, Videa, with Howard Delman and Ed Rotberg, programmer of Atari's Battlezone.
Steve Jobs was an American entrepreneur, inventor, and industrial designer, widely recognized as a pioneer of the personal computer revolution. He co-founded Apple Inc. with Steve Wozniak in 1976 and played a key role in the development of the Apple II, Macintosh, iPod, iPhone, and iPad, among other products. He also co-founded and served as CEO of Pixar Animation Studios, which produced some of the most successful animated films of all time, including Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles.Born in San Francisco, California in 1955, Jobs dropped out of college after six months and traveled to India in search of spiritual enlightenment. He returned to the United States and started working at Atari Inc. before founding Apple with Wozniak. Jobs was known for his perfectionism, innovation, and marketing skills, and became one of the most influential figures in the technology industry. He was also a controversial figure, known for his difficult personality and contentious relationships with colleagues.Jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2003 and underwent a liver transplant in 2009. He resigned as CEO of Apple in August 2011 due to health complications, and passed away on October 5, 2011, at the age of 56. Despite his relatively short life, Jobs' impact on the technology industry and popular culture was profound, and he is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential figures of the modern era.
Back when the world was a different place and playing video games typically happened at your local arcade, Atari Inc decided to change things up. Releasing the Atari Video Computer System was only the start of what is now 100 billion dollar industry.

As we head into the final quarter of 1988, we have three classic Nintendo games appearing on what is decidedly NOT a classic Nintendo console. Atari published ports of three vintage Nintendo creations (Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, and Mario Bros.) on a variety of platforms in late 1988, including the 2600, their various 8-bit platforms, and as seen here the 7800. While the 7800 releases can't quite punch with the actual Nintendo-programmed NES versions, the fact that these three carts exist at all turns out to be more than enough to fill an episode with speculation and musings. I'm pretty sure I accidentally mixed up the names Atari Inc. and Atari Corp. here once again, so apologies for that, sticklers. Also this episode, a little touch of errata: I somehow overlooked the fact that Centipede appeared at the 7800's launch in May 1986, so that also gets some air time this week. Unlike the Nintendo conversions, this take on Centipede is top-notch, with some surprisingly cool additions courtesy of General Computing Corp. Production notes: Video Works is funded via Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/gamespite) — support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its YouTube debut! Plus, exclusive podcasts, eBooks, and more! Atari 7800 and NES footage captured from @Analogue Nt Mini Noir. Arcade footage captured from MiSTer when possible (courtesy of @MiSTer Addons ). Wim Stocks has been a progressive leader in the online gaming and esports businesses since 1990. From 2001 to 2006, Wim was Executive Vice President of the “new” Atari Inc. (a roll-up and amalgam of Hasbro Interactive, Infogrames, and GT Interactive), leading and managing one of the broadest-reaching interactive entertainment publishing networks in the world. In 2006, Wim started an entrepreneurial online gaming publishing business named Elephant Entertainment, assuming the role of President and COO. In March 2008, the leading games publisher THQ purchased Elephant and Wim assumed the role of EVP and leader of the Online Gaming division and related digital gaming initiatives. In 2010, Wim was recruited to join the executive management team of Virgin Gaming (now WorldGaming) as Executive Vice President. In this role, Wim helped launch the company and platform in 2010, as well as developed strategic investor, technology, game publisher, retailer, and other brand partnerships. In April 2016, Wim was named CEO of WorldGaming & Collegiate StarLeague, which was acquired by Cineplex in the Fall of 2015, a leading movie theater operator with diversification into gaming, location based entertainment, and other aligned entertainment and digital media businesses. As of July 2020, Wim led the acquisition of Collegiate StarLeague & WorldGaming Network by Playfly Sports, a combined traditional sports, esports, and broadcast management/rights management company, and was responsible as Chairman for leading the esports business, strategy, sponsorship/partnership sales, and cultivation, and other investor and partner relations for the Company. Recently, Wim joined the executive management team of Belong Gaming & Vindex (founded in 2019 by esports industry pioneers and leaders Sundance DiGiovanni, Mike Sepso, and Martyn Gibbs), leading the commercial, partnerships, sponsorships, and business development initiatives. Wim currently serves as an Advisor to the Special Olympics International; an Advisor to Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) and Ryerson University's ‘Future of Sports Lab'; Advisor and part of the ownership group of Andbox, (parent company of the New York Excelsior, the professional NYC-based franchise in the Overwatch League, and the NY Subliners, professional NYC-based franchise in the Call of Duty League); Strategic Advisor to GG Group and Team Chaos; is a Board Member of National Public Radio's ‘Marketplace' programming; and is also a Trustee and on the Board of Directors of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Semper Fortis Esports PLC (LON:SEMP) CEO Kevin Soltani talks to Proactive about the group's first day of dealings on the Access segment of the Aquis Stock Exchange in London following an oversubscribed fundraising of £2.5M. Soltani says the proceeds of the fundraise will be used to invest in esports teams as well as its technology, and B2B esports consultancy services. The group was founded by gaming, sports, and corporate finance executives including Nolan Bushnell, the founder of US video game developer Atari Inc, as well as Keith Harris, Chairman of the Board, who was previously the Chairman of the English Football League.
Last Episode we spoke with a man who has been called the Father of Video Games. Silicon Valley legend Nolan Bushnell. If you haven't listened to that interview, make sure you go back and do so, because we talked all about his career up through his time at Atari, and ultimately the sale of Atari to Warner Media. So again, if you haven't listened to that episode, make sure to go back and do that. In part 2 of our interview with Nolan, we're covering the second half of his career. With someone as storied and experienced as Nolan is, he wasn't content to just sell Atari and fade into the background. The second part of our conversation centered around: Nolan's first adventure after leaving Atari His fascinating relationship with the iconic Steve Jobs Why Chuck E Cheese was more of an arcade business than a restaurant business The technology that he sold that became the bedrock of Pixar Did Steve actually solicit help from his Buddy Steve Wozniak How would Nolan describe their relationship? What percentage of Apple did Steve offer Nolan when seeking investment? Why did Nolan turn him down? Listen to this and all of The Founder Formula episodes at Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or our website.

Youth Advisory Board: Anneke Wyman This is the second episode in a series of interviews with the kids of Atari's Youth Advisory Board. In 1982-1983, Atari invited 20 kids, aged 14-18, to be on its new Youth Advisory Board. Atari was looking for well-rounded, computer-literate kids, with equal representation of sexes and a mix of ethnic groups. Anneke Wyman (now Anneke Wyman de Boer) was one of those kids. A wire service article about the Youth Advisory Board, by Kathy Holub, ran in several newspapers around March 25, 1983. Here's an excerpt from that story: "The fat world of corporate perks isn't just for executives anymore. On Sunday, 14-year-old Anneke Wyman of New York flew to San Francisco on a prepaid plane ticket to dine out on pizza and attend her first corporate board meeting. ... "As members of Atari Inc.’s new Youth Advisory Board, they got the sort of pampering reserved for top corporate clients, including a private movie screening, a tour of San Francisco and all the food they could eat. "What did they do to deserve all this? They can’t figure it out. 'It's almost a fantasy,' Anneke said, giggling. 'I had a three-minute interview calling from a pay phone at school. The dime ran out and I thought, well, I’ll never hear from them again. A few weeks later, they told me I was in. Now I'm sort of nervous.' "The video game market, once monopolized by Atari, has become as fiercely competitive as the home computer and educational software markets, and Atari hopes the kids can keep the company on the right track on all fronts...The 20 young board members are expected to keep Atari in touch with its market. ... "Anneke has danced in about 60 performances of The Nutcracker Suite with the New York City Ballet and can write computer programs in four languages. Her career? 'I don’t know yet,’ she said. 'But I'm much better in math and science.'" This interview took place on April 5, 2018. A video version of this interview is also available. This is an interview episode of Antic, the Atari 8-bit podcast. I’m Randy Kindig and in this interview I sat down with one of the members of the core design team at Cyan Engineering for such projects as the Atari 2600 and the 8-bit computers, Mr. Ron Milner. Ron is currently President of Applied Design Laboratories, but from 1973-1984, as an employee of Atari Inc, he worked at the Grass Valley Think Tank (also known as Cyan Engineering) where they did some amazing stuff, as you’ll hear in this interview. Ron was involved in many pivotal technologies in video games and home computers and was co-inventor of the Atari 2600 video game system. This interview took place on May 16, 2015. Teaser Quotes “Our group worked on just a lot of other projects relating to the home computer line.” “You know, it didn’t have to work, but if it looked like it might we looked into it.” “This is Ron Milner and I was one of the early Atari engineers at Atari’s secret think tank in the mountains pioneering many of the projects with my associates and you’re listening to the Antic podcast.” Links Ron’s Web Site Atari's Cyan Engineering - Splendor in the Grass documentary
Join Lily, Shawn, and Scott as they review Atari: Game Over, the first documentary in Xbox Live's Signal to Noise series. Listen as they discuss the rise and fall of Atari Inc., the colossal commercial failure of E.T. The Game, the urban legend of the burial of millions of unsold E.T. The Game cartridges in a New Mexico landfill, and the years of undeserved blame placed on game designer Howard Scott Warshaw. From the Atari 2600 to Game Genie to Raspberry Pis to why having Steven Spielberg attached to your project may not necessarily be a good thing, they talk about it all!(Also Scott surprises the crew with a gift to commemorate the episode.)
