It’s owner Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick) is unhappy about her new lodger but as she’s in serious debt she accepts Danny on the promise of financial relief until he begins to cause controversy with her students. Strap yourself in listeners because this bumper edition of Film Chat is longer than fucking Leonard Cohen song (R.I.P). This week Sam reviews two films which are adaptations of plays. First up is La La Land!...... Sorry I mean Fences, Denzel Washington's adaptation of the Pultizer prize winner play by August Wilson. Then he casts his discerning eye on La La Land! ....Sorry I mean It's Only The End Of The World, the latest film by director and child, Xavier Dolan. Meanwhile Danny continues his quest to watch every film with the word "women" in the title by reviewing Kelly Reichardt's latest film La La Land! No wait that's wrong what I meant to type was Certain Woman. We also dissect the Oscars in forensic detail, report on the casting for Yorgos Lanthimos' latest film and learn everything there is to know about the film watching habits of US Presidents. On this episode Sam reviews Doctor Strange, the latest offering from Marvel in which Benedict Cumberbatch plays a man with a PHD in kicking ass and traversing the astral plane. Meanwhile Danny fills us in on two new release which he originally saw at the London Film Festival. The disarmingly sincere Ethel and Ernest (he went in scornful, he came out tearful) and Werner Herzogs latest doc Lo and Behold, which sees the German Auteur successfully interviewing people weirder than him. Plus they wonder if there has ever been a more creatively daring premise than the one behind the upcoming animation The Boss Baby, lament how Hollywood sexism is preventing us from getting more Hilary Swank films and learn about the role Ice Cube was born to play. On this week Sam went to see smash hit comedy Zoolander 2 with Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and the rest of the gang reprising their roles as the clueless but lovable ridiculously good looking models. He was baffled by a large sprawling film which seemed to mainly consist of political machinations in 9th century China and definitely didn't have Ben Stiller in it. It was only when the credits rolled that he realised that he'd actually gone to wrong screen and had watched the entirety of The Assassin, a sumptuous epic from esteemed Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien....so he reviewed that instead. Meanwhile Danny went to check out Alvin and Chipmunks: The Road Chip. He was initially impressed by the stellar A list cast- Ralph Fiennes as Alvin with Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts and Dakota Johnson as the chipmunks?! It all seemed to implausible to be true and it turned out it was as what he'd actually watched was A Bigger Splash - a film about sexy rich people hating each other on a beautiful Italian island. He didn't mind though because he thought it was like well good. They also discuss the latest news from enfant terrible, agent provocateur Danish wunderkin Lars Von trier......and wonder if Stephen Fry was replaced with a life size cut out of Stephen Fry which just emitted a string of sycophantic adjectives every four minutes anyone at the Baftas would notice. Like the 2009 film Pink Panther 2, the 11th in the Pink Panther series, this is the episode of Film Chat that is gonna take its place in the history books. Unlike Clouseau, Sam proves himself to the epitome of competence by doing not one, not two but two reviews. Firstly of Paul Thomas Anderson's stoner noir Inherent Vice, and secondly of J C Chandor's mob drama A Most Violent Year. Meanwhile Danny, much like the character of Clouseau's girlfriend Nicole Durant-Clouseau, iconically brought to life by Emily Mortimer, supports him at every turn. He also checks out Alex Garland’s debut sci-fi film Ex Machina. "Are robots human?" the film asks. “Obviously not." he replies. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week Nicola managed to persuade a friend to take part at Leeds parkrun. Shame she forgot to impress the start time and barcode routine. Meanwhile Danny went to Brandon Country Park parkrun on the north Suffolk border. Shame he forgot where he put his keys. They also bring you loads of other parkrun related info.
Roar. In this week's show Nicola went to Leeds in a Lion onesie along with her pride and raised a lot of money for charity by selling cakes. Meanwhile Danny went on a return visit after over four years to Finsbury (Funsbury) parkrun and also was at the inaugural Wimbledon Park Juniors parkrun.
