663. Part 2 of our conversation with Matthew and Melissa, hosts of the the "This Ain't It" podcast, covering their response to MAGA religion. Hosted by Matthew Teutsch, a scholar of African American literature and Director of the Lillian E. Smith Center, and his wife Melissa Teutsch, the show explores the intersection of culture, politics, and history. Together, they engage in deep conversations about civil rights, the power of rhetoric, and the ongoing struggle for social justice in the American South and beyond. By examining the "interminable" nature of systemic oppression, the Teutsches challenge listeners to embrace the responsibility of resistance through education and empathy. "The Expedition of Hernando de Soto" was written by his companion Luis Hernandez de Biedma. "When we arrived, the queen sent us one of her nieces, in a litter carried by Indians. She sent the governor a present of a necklace of beads, canoes to cross the river with, and gave us half the village to lodge in. The governor opened a large temple built in the woods, in which was buried the chiefs of the country, and took from it a quantity of pearls, amounting to six or seven arrobes, which were spoiled by being buried in the ground. We dug up two Spanish axes, a chaplet of wild olive seed, and some small beads, resembling those we had brought from Spain for the purpose of trading with the Indians. We conjectured they had obtained these things by trading with the companions of Vasquez de Ayllon. The Indians told us the sea was only about thirty leagues distant." This week in Louisiana history. Rusty, who worked in Hollywood for nearly four decades, mostly as a freelance television producer for some of television's longest-running, all-time rated reality shows, as well as on movies like Terminator 2 as an electrician, knows how to entertain people. He applies that experience to penning informative and entertaining illustrated children's books of poetry.Since retiring in 2018, he has had six books published, including a memoir, one on baseball history, and four children's books. His nephew illustrated two of the children's books, while another nephew did another, and his newest book, An Awesome Bird, The Pelican, was illustrated entirely by seventh and eight graders attending his local middle school in California.“I try to include in the poems some facts about where the animals live, what they eat, and what they look like,” says Rusty. “I try to use new words and concepts so the readers learn something new. For example, a Caiman has a nictitating membrane and the Brown Bat uses echolocation to navigate in the dark.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

After 35 years behind the scenes of some of television's most iconic reality shows, Rusty Austin has traded cameras for crayons—and the result is pure magic for young readers. Drawing on decades of storytelling experience from top-rated series like Hell's Kitchen, Survivor, Big Brother, COPS, and Nanny 911, Austin now creates illustrated children's books that blend playful poetry, fascinating animal facts, and hands-on creativity. Since retiring from Hollywood in 2018, Austin has published six books, including four children's titles that encourage curiosity, learning, and artistic expression. His latest release, An Awesome Bird, The Pelican, features illustrations created entirely by local middle school students, giving kids the rare chance to see their own artwork inside a published book. Each poem introduces young readers to animals from around the world—what they eat, where they live, and even fun scientific concepts like echolocation and nictitating membranes—without ever feeling like a lesson. Beloved by parents, grandparents, and educators alike, Austin's books include interactive DIY sections that invite children to draw, color, write, and sign their own pages—turning reading into a shared creative experience. His mission is simple but powerful: help kids laugh, learn, and feel confident following their curiosity. Rusty Austin is available for interviews to discuss his Hollywood journey, his transition to children's literature, and how poetry, education, and community collaboration can inspire the next generation of artists, thinkers, and storytellers.http://rustyaustin.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.Subscribe now at YouTube.com/@RefocusedNetworkThank you for your time.

Jeff Smith and Carson Odegard sit down with Alex Keil, president of DEMERBOX, to unpack how a garage-built, Pelican-case speaker turned into a made-in-USA workhorse for hunters and outdoor crews. From Zac Brown's early buy-in to today's South Florida build shop, Alex walks through durability tests (yes, trucks and shotguns), smart features like USB-C/A charging, true ported sound with a waterproof plug, 40-hour battery life, and why the team still repairs your unit years down the road. What you'll learnOrigin story, built for abuse — TV-set audio tech meets Pelican cases; Zac Brown helps scale; U.S. assembly keeps it tough and fixable.Real features that matter — ported audio you can plug for water, floats, doubles as a dry box, and charges your phone inside the case.Specs & models — DV2 (dual-driver stereo) vs. the smaller 1150 case; pair up to six; $249 and $399 price points.Beat-it-up testing — ladder drops, truck tires, even 12-gauge at 70 yards—and it keeps playing.Use cases — from camp music to call box duty, first-aid storage to poolside sound; why outdoor folks are the natural audience. What's next — cleaner one-button pairing, accessories, and more rugged gear on the roadmap. If you want a speaker that survives the hunt truck, keeps your phone alive, and still thumps at 100%, this episode breaks down the kit—and the culture—that make DEMERBOX a legit piece of field gear.

Double Tap Episode 439 This episode of Double Tap is brought to you by: Gideon Optics, Primary Arms, Night Fision, Blue Alpha, Bowers Group, and Second Call Defense   Welcome to Double Tap, episode 439! Your hosts tonight are Jeremy Pozderac, Jon Patton and me Shawn Herrin, welcome to the show! Jon Patton - https://theguncollective.com/ Dear WLS Hunter M - Wanting to upgrade my Ender 3 Pro to a Bambu X1C, but I am hesitant to buy one if there is a possibility of blocking 2A prints. I have seen where some people suggest never connecting it to the internet and only printing off of SD cards but it seems like you could be missing out on a ton of features. Is it worth it to connect it to the internet or play it safe and only use it offline? If it was connected and they pushed out anti-gun restrictions how could you get the printer back to printing freedom? Conner R - What are your go to snacks or meals when hiking, camping, hunting, or rucking? What are you favorite meals in general? Thanks!l Uvuana Suqit - Why does every host on the Firearms Radio Network seem to have an astigmatism? And a bunch of other media people in the firearms industry in general. I hear constantly about not being able to use red dots because of astigmatism, making the dot not a perfect circle, and some other shape. Just want to say that the projection on the glass for red dots won't be a perfect circle with the way they are designed/manufactured, and the “dot” has a weird shape because it is projecting a bunch of tiny dots to a general area on the glass to make up the dot. It does not create a perfect circle. And if you focus on the “dot,” then you will see “imperfection” vs looking at the target where the “imperfection” will be nonexistent, with the general dot shape being over the target. I'm just curious if everyone is mistaking this inherent design of the red dot projection for something that is wrong with their eyes. And when every host says they have an astigmatism, it just seems odd. Karl F - The conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated the usefulness of small drones when it comes to both reconnaissance and delivery of payloads. This usefulness could definitely extend beyond combat to a SHTF scenario. Have any of you considered adding a drone to your gear collection?#blamecanada Oopsie Daisy - If you wanted to escape thermal imaging, do you think throwing a mylar poncho over the wool Five Star Alterations poncho would have a greater effect on reducing your thermal signature? For no one in particular, I'm interested to hear all of your opinions on this. Nate B - How far back is too far back for barrel porting? I understand you'd like the port as far forward as possible as that is where it's most beneficial (better tilt point) but I've seen ported Glocks and other pistols where they have multiple, tiny holes that seem to be fairly close to the chamber. Also ports > comps Anthony L - I wanted to ask what sites you use for the 3d print files. Thank you   The winner of this week's swag pack is Oopsie Daisy! For example, a Caiman has a nictitating membrane and the Brown Bat uses echolocation to navigate in the dark.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Welcome back to The Go-To Food Podcast, where we're joined by Alison Roman — chef, writer, and creator of some of the most talked-about recipes of the last decade. Alison takes us back to her first kitchen job at Sona in Los Angeles, working under David Myers for $7.25 an hour, crying daily but learning fast. It was a tiny, nine-person kitchen that ran like The Bear, long before The Bear existed. From there she went to Milk Bar in New York, then the Bon Appétit test kitchen — reverse-engineering photo-shoot dishes into recipes home cooks could actually make. The early days were brutal, pre-Instagram, and anonymous. No bylines, no fame, just biscuits, burnouts, and a deep sense that if you showed up more than anyone else, something would happen. In London, Alison's been eating with purpose — Café Deco's anchovy-studded little gem, a quiche that insists it's a frittata, and a beef stew she calls one of the best she's ever had. She weighs The Devonshire against The Pelican and The Hart. There's a fascination with pub culture, a debate over sharpened pencils at hotel reception, and a reminder that the best meals aren't always on “the list.” We get her take on TikTok chefs, the chaos of phones in kitchens, and an unnerving AI ad that generates recipe ideas without authors — proof, she says, that food without humanity just doesn't taste the same.We talk legacy too. From Dining In to Nothing Fancy to Sweet Enough, Alison's cookbooks built a blueprint for the way people cook now — easy, intuitive, quietly confident. She admits the dessert book nearly broke her, but Something for Nothing came easily because it mirrors how she actually cooks. There's a new tomato sauce line born from her husband's refusal to cook, a love letter to anchovies, and an argument for doing one thing well instead of a thousand badly. We end with her perfect menu: shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad, ribeye in brown butter and lemon, and a slice of key lime pie — the ultimate Alison Roman meal, simple, specific, and unapologetically human.------Sponsor: This episode is brought to you by Blinq—POS made simple: £69/month, unlimited devices, 24/7 UK support, no contracts or hidden fees. Andy and Brendan! are joined by "The Boys" for this Wednesday episode in honor of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Andy is especially jazzed after a big Packers loss on national TV moving the Bears into a tie for first place in the NFC North. He attempts to once again besmirch Aaron Rodgers but quickly is moved to golf talk with a loaded schedule of events to discuss. Brendan attempts to deem the Butterfield as the "Event of the Week" but is shamed into giving it to the Schwab Cup Finals by Andy as a nod to PJ's continued Champions Tour coverage. Andy, Brendan, and Joseph LaMagna run through the field in Bermuda and Brendan shares his investigation into how some amateurs found their way into the event. The DP World Tour finals are next up on the "Schedule of the Week," with Rory McIlroy poised to secure yet another Race to Dubai win. The DPWT announced the new "Rory McIlroy Award" on Tuesday, now given to the European with the best performance across a year's four majors. To Brendan and PJ's surprise, Joseph reveals that Rory is ineligible for this award, leading to questions about why this even exists. The ANNIKA Driven by Gainbridge at the Pelican has made plenty of headlines due to a Kai Trump sponsor exemption and Caitlin Clark's Pro-Am round having extended coverage on Golf Channel. Finally, PJ previews the Charles Schwab Cup Championship as the 2025 Champions Tour season comes to a close. Andy makes plans for next year's swan song at Phoenix Country Club that involves PJ running a 5K race to raise money for colon cancer research. There's a brief discussion of some news surrounding the now-announced teams for the "Golf Channel Games," but Joseph isn't sure what to make of this made-for-TV spectacle. "The Boys" are then put on the hot seat by Andy and Brendan as they're quizzed about the future of "Lunch with The Boys," the Indianapolis Colts, and more.

Drone News: FCC Gets Authority to Ban Drones, DJI Drone & Payload Leak, $300K Fine from Drone

Drone News Update

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 31, 2025 7:12

Welcome to your weekly UAS News Update. We have three stories for you this week: the FCC vote, DJI drone and payload leaks, and a California homeowner is facing a massive $300,000 fine based on drone surveillance. Let's get to it.First up, in a 3-0 vote, the FCC granted itself the authority to retroactively ban equipment from companies on its "Covered List." This new rule was driven by Chinese communication equipment issues and it closes two major loopholes. First, it prohibits the authorization of any new devices that contain components from a Covered List company. Second, and this is the big one, it allows the FCC to revoke previously authorized equipment if national security concerns arise. As I said, this was motivated by huawei and other Chinese telecom equipment. Why does it matter to the drone world?DJI and Autel could end up on the FCC Covered List by the end of the year if an audit of their technology is not completed by the US government. If/when they get added, then the FCC would have the authority to do what they just voted on. There is technically a notice of proposed rule making coming up on this to follow, but as of this recording, it is NOT public.Next up, DJI has a few rumored releases including the Neo 2, which is rumored to be released by the time you're watching this recording! Some notable upgrades include forward-facing LiDAR, 2 Axis Gimbal, possible sensor upgrades, and the battery, reportedly offering 15% more capacity for a flight time of around 19 minutes. But that upgrade comes at a cost—leaked Australian pricing shows the new battery will be $129, which is more than double the original's $59 price tag. DJI Enterprise is teasing a new payload for all the surveyors and mappers out there. The company has announced a launch event for November 4th at 7 AM EST for what is almost certainly the new Zenmuse L3 LiDAR payload. The teaser tagline is "See Through, Far and True," which gives us some big clues. "See Through" likely points to improved vegetation penetration, which is critical for forestry and terrain mapping. "Far" suggests a longer detection range than the Zenmuse L2's 450 meters. And "True" implies even better accuracy, which would be impressive since the L2 already boasts 4cm vertical and 5cm horizontal accuracy.Leaked photos show the L3 payload in a rugged Pelican-style case, and it features a distinctive pink and purple display screen that matches the teaser video. This is the logical successor to the Zenmuse L2, which was launched back in October 2023. DJI has been a game-changer in this space, bringing the cost of aerial LiDAR down from over $100,000 to something much more accessible. Fourth this week, a homeowner in Stanton, California, is facing a staggering $300,000 fine after a drone owned by the City allegedly recorded illegal fireworks being set off at his property on July 4th. The city claims its drone documented approximately 300 explosions, and they're fining him $1,000 for each one. The homeowner insists he wasn't even home at the time. And next week at this time, we'll be in Las Vegas for the Vegas Drone Meetup! We'll be teaching a few in-person courses on select Part 107 topics and on photography and cinematography. If you're in the area, check it out and we hope to see you there! In this enchanting episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty takes listeners on a captivating journey with two extraordinary storytellers who are reimagining how children connect with the world around them. First, meet Susie Spikol, author of "The Book of Fairies," a delightful exploration of magical beings that bridges traditional mythology and childhood imagination. Spikol shares how her lifelong fascination with fairies began in childhood, inspiring her to create a unique field guide that encourages families to explore nature together. Her book features over 30 different fairies from earth, air, fire, and water realms, inviting children to discover the magic hiding in their own backyards. The conversation then shifts to Rusty Austin, a former reality TV producer turned children's poet, who has found a new passion in creating engaging, educational poetry about animals. His book "An Awesome Bird, the Pelican" emerged from a remarkable collaboration with middle school students who not only illustrated the book but became active participants in the creative process. Both authors share a profound belief in the power of curiosity, imagination, and outdoor exploration. They emphasize how spending time in nature can benefit children's development, from reducing stress to improving cognitive skills and fostering a deeper connection with the world. The episode is a delightful reminder that learning can be magical, playful, and deeply engaging. Whether it's searching for fairies, learning about unique animal behaviors, or simply exploring the world with an open mind, these storytellers demonstrate how literature can spark wonder and curiosity in young minds. Parents and educators will find inspiration in their approach to storytelling, which seamlessly blends education, imagination, and a sense of adventure. It's a must-listen for anyone who believes in the transformative power of stories and the importance of nurturing children's natural sense of wonder. There's some strange things afoot at the Circle K, amongst them some sideways situations for American firearm owners and Second Amendment supporters (which means everyone, in a fashion).  What's going on with the unintended acceleration from M18s?  Did Sig Sauer make a mistake or is this something worse?  What's better for our fighters to carry - an M18 or an M14?  Did we have these problems when US warfighters carried their 1911s cocked and locked?  Do all off-roaders carry a sidearm?  How about a frontarm?  Meanwhile, what's afoot and ahand with the underlying argument about craziness in the transmission crowd, and how American gun dealers are unintentionally making the case against dudes in the girls' locker room (ie: You can't blame the hammer for crooked nails.).  Meanwhile, let's all watch how the NRA negotiates this one (and how long is their game - Go Doug, go!). Here's talking at you: an F-35 conference call, polymath versus psycho, Leo Gordon, Bruce Lee Jr., self-defense spatulas, Sam Peckinpaugh, an Excellent Weirdo Sendoff for Graham Greene of "Maverick" and "Longmire", the Spiritual Beggars, Pelican and an Excellent Weirdo Sendoff for Dave Mustaine and his monster, Megadeth.

It's time that we sit down and hash out the most important issue of our time: what exactly *IS* post metal? On this jam-damn-packed continuation of our subgenre miniseries, Jordan and I discuss our lengthy experiences in the post metal scene and try our best to hammer some square pegs into round holes. We're talking about looooooooooooooong songs with non-conventional structures and trying to figure out what post metal guys think pop music is. Bands featured on this show include Neurosis, Burst, The Ocean, Cult of Luna, Isis, Pelican, and Jesu (among many others). Folks, it's a good one. How the Cold War made the modern world

For most of the latter half of the 20th century, the world was frozen in a standoff. The Cold War era was defined by the ideological fissure between capitalism, led by the United States, and communism, espoused by the Soviet Union. But in a new book, Vladislav Zubok challenges much of the accepted wisdom that has shaped popular perspectives about this standoff since 1991. Speaking to Danny Bird, Zubok discusses why Americans were far more ideological than their Soviet contemporaries; why decolonisation and the Global South became the ‘nuclear fuel' that sustained the Cold War; and how the conflict's conclusion in the 1990s continues to reverberate in global affairs to this day. (Ad) Vladislav Zubok is the author of The World of the Cold War: 1945-1991 (Pelican). In an extended version of the programme that was broadcast, Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the influential book John Maynard Keynes wrote in 1919 after he resigned in protest from his role at the Paris Peace Conference. There the victors of World War One were deciding the fate of the defeated, especially Germany and Austria-Hungary, and Keynes wanted the world to know his view that the economic consequences would be disastrous for all. Soon Germany used his book to support their claim that the Treaty was grossly unfair, a sentiment that fed into British appeasement in the 1930s and has since prompted debate over whether Keynes had only warned of disaster or somehow contributed to it. We are deliriously honored to have Nick Heyward return to the podcast to discuss his upcoming tour with Howard Jones (starts on the 2nd) and Deep Dive some of the Pelican West album with us. I say "some" because he only had an hour and we only covered five songs. BUT, there are enough goodies in the conversation, I have no doubt you'll enjoy hearing about how he made this perfect album (and the only one he made with the band before going solo). It's so nice having Haircut 100 a growing concern again after so many years. This tour is going to be amazing! Look for me at the Salt Lake City show!
