Are the Government's plans to reduce the shameful backlog of some 80,000 cases awaiting trial in the Crown Court built on sand? Is the prediction in Part 1 of Sir Brian Leveson's Independent Review of Criminal Courts reliable? Ken Macdonald KC and Tim Owen KC are joined by Cassia Rowland. Cassia is a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Government (IFG) and the author of the IFG's Report “Trial and Error? The impact of restricting jury trials on court demand” published on 21st January - https://www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/publication/judge-only-trials-court-demand-productivity⁠ Cassia's Report provides a critical, data-based analysis of the Lammy proposals to address the Crown Court backlog. She claims the proposed reforms will result in “marginal gains at best” and will not fix the fundamental crisis in the criminal justice system. The Report urges the Government to avoid radical structural changes to the right to jury trial. Instead, it recommends focusing on alternatives, such as investing in court staff, buildings, and technology, rather than experimenting with fundamental rights. Ken and Tim debate with Cassia the central question: whether restricting the right to a jury trial is the most effective solution to addressing the Crown Court backlog. They delve into the details of the Leveson, Lammy, and IFG reports, and examine whether the IFG's data and modelling provide a more reliable foundation for policy than those used by the Leveson Review. Finally, the duo discuss the recent Court of Appeal decision in R v Webster & others (https://caselaw.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ewca/crim/2026/9?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email). In this case, five Extinction Rebellion protesters unsuccessfully sought to appeal their convictions. Lon Milo DuQuette, also known as Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford and by his neo-Gnostic bishop title of Tau Lamed, is an American writer, lecturer, musician, and occultist, best known as an author who applies humor in the field of Western Hermeticism. In 1972 he began pursuing his interest in mysticism, particularly the work of Aleister Crowley. He is on the faculty of the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, New York where he teaches The Western Magical Tradition. Since 1975 DuQuette has been a National and International governing officer of Ordo Templi Orientis, a religious and fraternal organization founded in the early part of the 20th century. Since 1996 he has been O.T.O.'s United States Deputy Grand Master. He is also an Archbishop of Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica, the ecclesiastical arm of the O.T.O. DuQuette began writing professionally in 1988 and has since published 19 books (translated in 12 languages). Many of his books have been dedicated to analyzing and exploring the works of Aleister Crowley, an English occultist, author, poet and philosopher. He has written a number of successful books on topics in the Western mystical tradition including: Freemasonry, Tarot, Qabalah, ceremonial magick, the Enochian magick of Dr. John Dee, and Goetic spirit evocation. He is perhaps best known as "an author who injects humor into the serious subjects of magick and the occult." His autobiography, My Life with the Spirits, is currently a required text for two classes at DePaul University, Chicago. On this weeks show Maine and Miranda recap the UFC BJJ 1 and Polaris 32 Squads. This week in the news section we discuss Raphael Lovato Jr winning No gi Brazilleros making him the only black belt to ever win every IBJJF major Gi and NoGi.In the recap section of the show we discussed the final of the UFC BJJ 1 card. We talk about each of the three title fights on the card breaking down the 135 pound Bantamweight Title fight between Mikey Musumeci vs Rerisson Gabriel that saw Mikey on the legs for 3 round and taking the title home with a heel hook. In the 170 pound Welterweight Title Match Andrew Tackett vs Andy Varela we talked about Andrew Tackett finishing an arm in rear, naked choke on Andy. April das Drittwerk "Everyone, Outside", eingespielt im eigenen Studio der drei in Macclesfield. KIT TURNER worked for 25 years as an undercover CIA officer in East Asia, South Asia, and Europe, where he ran sensitive operations against top-tier objectives. After one risky deployment, he was awarded the Intelligence Star, a rare commendation for valor. After retiring, Turner wrote “The CASSIA Spy Ring” (McFarland & Co., 2017), a nonfiction book about an ill-fated coterie of agents handled by the US Office of Strategic Services, the CIA's forerunner.
