This month marks the 34 years since 4-year-old Michael Dunahee disappeared from a Victoria playground. It's arguably the most well-known missing person case from the island, but it's far from the only one. Laura Palmer produces “Island Crime,” a podcast that investigates true crime from our region, and she's our guest this week. We talk about some of the cases she digs into, but also about how families and police feel about her work, and why she thinks some cases get more attention than others.

Michael Dunahee, a four-year-old boy, vanished without a trace on March 24, 1991, from a crowded park in Victoria, British Columbia, in broad daylight, sparking one of Canada's largest and most haunting missing child investigations. Despite massive search efforts, extensive media coverage, and various leads over the years, including sightings and even a man believing he could be Michael, no credible evidence has ever surfaced, and the case remains unsolved. Theories range from local abduction to human trafficking, but nothing has been confirmed. The Dunahee family continues to advocate for missing children, organizing annual events to keep Michael's memory alive, while law enforcement periodically revisits the case in hopes of finding answers. As of 2024, the mystery of Michael Dunahee's disappearance remains a chilling enigma, a reminder of how swiftly life can be upended and how elusive justice can sometimes be.On September 16, 2019, five-year-old Dulce Maria Alavez disappeared from Bridgeton City Park in New Jersey while playing with her younger brother, sparking a massive search and investigation that continues to this day. Despite extensive efforts from local and federal authorities, including the FBI, and widespread media attention, no significant leads have emerged. Witnesses reported seeing a Hispanic man leading Dulce into a red van, but neither the man nor the vehicle was ever identified. The case, which remains unsolved, has deeply impacted Dulce's family and community, who continue to hold out hope for her safe return. Investigators still consider it an active investigation, pursuing every possible lead, as the search for answers continues.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

It's been called the most confounding missing children's case in Canadian history. On March 24, 1991, four-year-old Michael Dunahee was with his family at a local elementary school in Victoria, British Columbia, where his mother was playing flag football. He asked if he could go play on the playground, which was right by the football field. Michael's mother said yes, but that he had to stay right there until his father arrived. But when Michael's father went to collect the little boy, he was gone. The game was halted and everyone immediately started looking for Michael, but found no trace of him. Over the next three decades, many theories would be bandied about, running the gamut from an abduction by a family who wanted to raise a child, to a Satanic ritual, but to this day, Michael remains missing. What happened to Michael Dunahee?Anyone with information on the disappearance of Michael Dunahee is urged to call Detective Don Bland with the Victoria Police at 250-995-7654. Michael Dunahee was just four years old when he vanished from a playground in Victoria, B.C. in 1991. We talk to Laura Palmer about her new podcast, Missing Michael, which looks at his disappearance and his family's search for answers.
In this episode you will hear the voice of Michael Dunahee himself. Michael's parents Bruce & Crystal Dunahee shared home video with Producer Laura Palmer. Felicia Bernier was one of Michael's little chums. She describes her friend Michael through the lens of a childhood playmate. She talks about his love of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And how losing her buddy in such tragic circumstances impacted her life. Bruce and Crystal Dunahee reflect on their life as a family before Michael vanishes. Michael's parents talk about Michael's childhood and what kind of a little guy he is growing into. They are interviewed separately and together to capture as much detail as possible about the day Michael disappears and their specific recollections of the event. Author Valerie Green wrote the book on Michael Dunahee's case. It's called 'Vanished: The Michael Dunahee story'. Valerie mostly writes local history books. And true crime represents something of a departure for her. But Michael's disappearance in 1991, is a big part of the story of Victoria. Townsend Coleman is the voice of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle 'Michaelangelo', one of Michael's heroes. At the end of each episode Townsend is lending his voice to a plea for information on Michael's case.
The cliche 'It's every parent's nightmare' certainly fits the narrative of the disappearance of 4-year-old Michael Dunahee. On a spring day in 1991, Michael vanished from a playground in Victoria, BC while his parents were nearby. The adorable dimpled little boy with tousled blond hair captured the attention of the entire country. His case remains one of the largest unsolved mysteries in Canada. What happened to little Michael on that day? Could he still be alive?Listen to Island Crime, Season 3: Missing Michael on January 18th.

These are your Twisted Two's. Michael Dunahee He was only four years old in 1991. Michael Dunahee from Victoria, British Columbia was playing at the playground of the Blandshard Elementary School when he vanished. It was March 24, 1991, Michael, together with his family, headed out to his mother, Crystal’s flag football practice. They arrived at the field around 12:30 noon. Once they got there, Michael asked his mom if he could go play at the playground which was near the field where the football practice was happening. Even though her mom thought “something was off” she still allowed her son to go but gave him instructions to never leave until his father came to get him. Moments later, when his dad went to the playground to check on him, he wasn’t there. Almost immediately, around 50 people began looking for the young boy. They also notified police but by he was nowhere in sight. Munroe Demon House In the quiet city of Hartford, Indiana, sits a large old-fashioned Victorian style home at 218 North Monroe Street. The home sits alongside historical landmarks and buildings in the area, but this particular house holds a terrifying secret. Known as the Munroe Demon House, this Victoria style home was built during the 19th century when Hartford City was at its infancy. The home showed up in 1892, built on a previously created structure of unknown origin. The first known owners were the Berger Family - Belgian immigrants who came to the city to take advantage of the emerging glass industry. They later became prominent entrepreneurs and leading citizens of Hartford. Shortly after moving in, the patriarch, John B. Berger died of tuberculosis.

March 24, 1991. Victoria, British Columbia. Four-year old Michael Dunahee accompanies his family to a football game at a local elementary school and after they park their car, Michael asks if he can go to a nearby playground. Within minutes, Michael’s parents notice that he is not at the playground and has vanished without a trace, leading to speculation that he was abducted during a very narrow timeframe. Over the next two decades, there would be reported sightings of Michael, the surprising discovery of his missing poster in a deceased individual’s home, and a couple of young adults who were briefly suspected of being Michael himself, but he is never found. August 5, 1989. North Delta, British Columbia. After spending the night in the same bedroom as her baby sister, three-year old Casey Bohun vanishes without explanation from her home. Casey is last seen playing on the front porch by a neighbour and police dogs are able to track her scent down the street to a nearby park, but there is no sign of the missing child. Casey’s family would suffer a number of personal tragedies in subsequent years, but there are still no answers about what actually happened to her.
